Behaviour of SABC's chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng

Hlaudi Motsoeneng, SABC's acting COO does not have a good reputation. In February 2014, the Public Protector heavily criticised his behaviour and this week he has got himself in hot water again. According to the Sowetan, a Venda lobby group welcomed Motsoeneng to Thohoyandou with the gift of a cow and calf before lining up girls from which the COO could pick his wife of choice. “The girls were around 10 and they paraded for him to choose. He chose the one he liked,”. The Sowetan featured a picture of Motsoeneng with his choice, 23-year-old Vanessa Mutswari. Motsoeneng reportedly said in Sesotho: “Ba mphile mofumahadi [they gave me a wife].” but Mutswari spoke to reporters in Johannesburg where she said she was engaged to be married to someone else and that the 13 June report in the Sowetan was not true. “I’m saying with my own mouth, I was not given to anybody,” As a result, a complaint about Hlaudi Motsoeneng being given a wife as a gift has been lodged with the Commission for Gender Equality.
