Maya Angelou (1928 - 2014)
Maya Angelou was an American author and poet. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning more than 50 years. Her lasting contribution to literature was "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." the 1969 autobiography about the early years of African-American writer and poet Maya Angelou. The first in a seven-volume series, it is a coming-of-age story that illustrates how strength of character and a love of literature can help overcome racism and trauma. The book begins when three-year-old Maya and her older brother are sent to Stamps, Arkansas, to live with their grandmother and ends when Maya becomes a mother at the age of 16. In the course of Caged Bird, Maya transforms from a victim of racism with an inferiority complex into a self-possessed, dignified young woman capable of responding to prejudice.

Nathi Mthethwa's Credentials - New Arts and Culture Minister
More known for his mishandling of the Marikana, Mido Macia and Tatane affairs than his knowledge of arts and culture, former police minister Nathi Mthethwa is named as the "new" arts and culture minster. Moving him from the security cluster to the arts and culture portfolio has the public hot and bothered. The public's reaction on the move has caused "Nathi Mthethwa" to trend on Twitter.
Some tweets:
@NomalangaSA: I don’t get how shifting from Ministry of Arresting Criminals to Ministry of Cultivating Intellectual and Aesthetic Sense is a demotion.
@FloMasebe: It is done. Let’s welcome Mthethwa and his deputy. There’s work to do.
@NomfundoEngler: I don’t know why people think arts and culture is an insignificant ministry.
@thembisak: whaaaaaaat???!!!! why do they always give Arts&Culture to the ones who know nothing about it??!!! ayayayayyyyy.
@mbokazizanele: Could be a wonderful surprise for the industry.
@SwaziDlamini: We could have used a Mbalula in arts and culture.
@fanamokoena: Nathi Mthethwa is now the Minister of Arts and Culture *grabs Essence of Life*
@Tril_Frog: I also wonder what Nathi Mthethwa did to Zuma to get so demoted. From the powerful police to mere arts and culture! Ay.
@Afurakan: #DearLeader how about an artist for minister of arts and culture?
@mynameisjerm: Why the police minister is now the arts and culture minister is obvious. He loves Zuma’s spear and wants to protect it from assholes.
@Linda_Sibiya: To Nathi Mthethwa: We hope we will see change.
@NdumisoNgcobo: Hawu baba wethu Msholozi, do you know that Collins Chabane is a poet and recording musician? Hello!

Nhlanhla Nene Appointed New Minister of Finance
Nhlanhla Nene has been been appointed the new minister finance succeeding Pravin Gordhan. While Mr. Nene has been the deputy misiter since 2008, his name is synonomous with a TV clip that circulated the social media. In 2008 he became an online hit after a 26-second clip of him falling from a chair was posted on the video website Youtube. The chair malfunction occurred while Nene was answering questions concerning Finance Minister Trevor Manuel's mini-budget on the programme View from the House. On the video, the chair cracks audibly, causing Nene to wince, though he kept speaking. Twelve seconds after the cracking sound the chair failed catastrophically, causing Nene to fall backwards, his hands grabbing at the desk as the chair collapsed beneath him.[10] Presenter Hayde Fitzpatrick managed to keep stone faced as the camera switched quickly to her. The program then went to a commercial break while the producers ascertained Nene's condition. He was unharmed and the interview continued, with Nene in a different chair.

EFFniks at the SWEARING-IN Ceremony
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were at the centre of a number of controversies on the first day of the new Parliament. 25 members, dressed in red overalls or domestic worker uniforms presented themselves to Parliament. The Effniks wore either berets, headscarves or hard hats. The EFF MPs with the new red construction worker helmets were told to remove them, while those with the doeks and berets could keep them on. The bright red overalls and domestic workers’ outfits worn by the EFF MPs to South Africa’s fifth democratic Parliament were intended to send a strong message to the nation. Hlengiwe Maxon, who came from Durban to be sworn in as a member of Parliament for the EFF, said the workers’ dress will only be worn on special occasions. Holding up her red apron, Maxon said, “This is the dress of domestic workers. We are trying to tell people that we are from the Economic Freedom Fighters, we are here for the workers and the poor. We are sending a message to say that the Parliament for the people is not a Parliament for the elite. So the workers at home, when they see us dressed like this, they will know they are represented.”

Mind the Gap
The National Union of Mining South Africa (Numsa) are considering forming their own federation and this could lead to forming their own political party. While the ANC achieved 62% in the general election, there was a decrease in ANC support, particularly in Gauteng and other urban centres. There is growing support for splinter parties such as the Economic Freedom Fighters. This should be a wake-up call to the ruling party. It also shows that there is room for a solid party of the left able to chip away at the ANC’s dominance. Amongst those criticising the ANC is Irvin Jim, the leader of NUMSA. Irvin Jim recently said that President Jacob Zuma and the Cabinet ministers who defended the spending on his Nkandla homestead should resign. "The president must resign. Further, we call on those ministers who scandalously defended the president and misled the public on Nkandla to resign as well," Jim said said the R246 million upgrade to Zuma's private Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal was nothing "other than the ruling elite spending a huge amount of public money on a private residence for one man and his family".

Platinum Belt Escalation
In an interview with Business Day, Anglo American Platinum chief executive officer Chris Griffith justifies his salary. Business Day reported that Griffith, his 11 executives and top management had been awarded R25.3-million in a bonus-share scheme that would pay out in three years as part of a skills-retention scheme. A further R51.8-million would be awarded to the team over the same period if a number of performance criteria were met. According to Amplats’s 2013 annual report, Griffith was paid a total R17.6-million, of which R6.7-million was a basic salary. The company paid wages of R12.5-billion that year. Amcu is demanding the basic monthly entry-level wage for underground workers be raised to R12,500 from R5,700.
Frans Baleni, general secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, said on Tuesday the gap between the workforce and executives was simply too large.
Workers felt resentful when highly paid CEOs made bad business decisions that resulted in retrenchments, he said.
"It’s important that workers be paid a decent wage for decent work. That’s a fundamental issue. You don’t want poor workers who can’t afford to live.

Boko Haram's Kidnapping of 200 Nigerian School Girls
On 16th April, 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped over 200 school girls in norhern Nigeria. Boko Haram is a militant Islamist group, which has caused havoc in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country through a wave of bombings, assassinations and now abductions. They are fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state. Boko Haram promotes a version of Islam which makes it "haram", or forbidden, for Muslims to take part in any political or social activity associated with Western society. Boko Haram's aim is to impose a stricter enforcement of Sharia law across Africa's most populous nation, which is split between a majority Muslim north and a mostly Christian south.
