The LAND debate

When Gugile Nkwinti, Rural Development and Land Reform Minister declared some of the controversial land reform proposals, Andile Mngxitama with the assistance of  Hlengiwe Maxon (EFF) and Pieter Groenewald  (FF+)  traded insults during the heated debate on land reform, resulting in two MPs  (Mngxitama  and  Maxon) being booted out of Parliament  for calling each other “thieves” and not respecting parliamentary protocols.

It's Code Red! - EFF storms Gauteng legislature

On Tuesday 22 July 2014 and in protest against the removal of their MPLs during a sitting on July 1, the Economic Freedom Fighters' members stormed into the Gauteng legislature. Malema led over 1,000 supporters of his party in protest over the party's trademark red overalls being banned from the provincial parliament. Malema demanded to be received in the members' lodge, which is not protocol. The EFF supporters proceeded to eat the food meant for the members of the house and did so with their bare hands. Malema and his members allegedly became rowdy and sprayed fire extinguishers in the hallways. Finally Malema and nearly 300 of his supporters were forcefully removed after the sit-in.

Nelson Mandela looks like his heart belongs to Graca Machel, with whom he recently dined in Paris at the Hotel de Marigny. Speculation is growing in South Africa that the two may wed, Mandela's spokesperson Parks Mankahlana continues to deny that there is any wedding plans.

Putin in the Dock over Shooting Down of Air Malasia - MH17 over Ukraine

The western world feel strongly that Putin must take responsibility for the MH17 disaster. 298 people—283 passengers and 15 crew— died when Malaysian airline MH17 was apparently hit by a sophisticated surface-to-air missile over Eastern Ukraine.  , Russia’s president and ambassadors have been evasive and disingenuous. Its UN representatives have dragged their feet, and there are signs that rebels with links to Russian military intelligence may have removed debris and recording devices from the crash site before the arrival of international observers.

Gaza 2014 - Guernica 1937

Zapiro's cartoon is based on Pablo Picasso's Guernica, one of the most famous paintings of all timep ainted in 1937. Probably Picasso's most famous work, Guernica is certainly the his most powerful political statement, painted as an immediate reaction to the Nazi's devastating casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during Spanish Civil War. Picasso’s Guernica has become a universal anti-war symbol. On 26 April 1937, Franco’s allies, Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, sent the Luftwaffe and Aviazione Legionaria to bomb the Basque town of Guernica on market day. ‘The bombing has often been considered one of the first raids in the history of modern military aviation on a defenseless civilian population. Taking this 77 years on, Israel’s terror bombings of Gaza mirror Göring’s callous military intentions. Civilians are bearing the brunt of Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip, with civilians accounting for more than 80 percent of the reported casualties

Thandi's Farm is a Political Plot

In July 2014, the SPCA discovered a number of dead animals, including chickens, pigs, goats and geese, on a farm owned by Thandi Modise, the former premier of North West Province and now National Council of Provinces chairwoman . It was apparent that the animals had gone without food and water for more than a week, and the 85 remaining pigs on the farm had resorted to cannibalising the 58 dead pigs. No workers were present on the property. Modise responded to the claims by stating that she is "learning" how to farm, and that she had appointed a farm manager, but he had abandoned his duties to attend to a family matter. It is now being widely reported that the story has another shocking aspect - super-exploitation of workers.

Obituary: Nadine Gordimer 1923 - 2014

13 July 2014: Writer, political activist and nobel prize laureate, Nadine Gordimer( 90) died peacefully in her sleep. Gordimer wrote 15 novels as well as several volumes of short stories, non-fiction and other works. She was published in 40 languages around the world. Friend of Nelson Mandela, Gordimer was an unwavering critic of apartheid and an outspoken advocate of black majority rule. Her fiction, which she saw as part of the struggle against apartheid, documented the havoc that institutionalised racism wrought on private lives. Three of her works were banned by the government for varying periods because of their outspoken messages. In an 1990 interview she said Gordimer said “I used the life around me and the life around me was racist,” In a 1990 interview she said “I would have been a writer anywhere, but in my country, writing meant confronting racism.

This drawing was done twenty two years ago by Zapiro as a tribute to Nadine Gordimer for the cover of a 1992 edition of the progressive Afrikaans journal, Die Suid-Afrikaan.

Messi vs THE Machine

The 2014 Fifa World Cup final (Germany vs Argentina) will take place on (13th Jul 2014) in front of an expected television audience of more than a billion. On the one side there is Lionel Messi, whose deadly combination of speed, skill and finishing prowess is unrivaled. On the otherside there is a team of players that behave like a machine. Germany thrashed Brazil 7-1 in the semi final. It is appropriate that the final is being billed "Messi vs. the machine."
