Oscar Pistorius Murder Trial - Mendacity
Gerrie Nel accused Oscar Pistorius of being a "deceitful and appalling witness" and claimed he had consistently tailored his version of events because his testimony was "weak" and his answers "vague". "The court should have no difficulty in rejecting his full version of events, not only as not reasonably possibly true, but in essence as being absolutely devoid of any truth." Mr Nel described Pistorius as a witness who was more "concerned about the implications of his answers" than giving a "truthful version", highlighting that Pistorius himself admitted he was "defending for his life" in his testimony.

Minister subpoenaed in Hlaudi Motsoeneng investigation
Following the earthquake that likked one person in Orkney, Gauteng, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela created a second "earthquake by issuing a subpoena for Communications Minister Faith Muthambi as part of her investigation into the permanent appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng as SABC COO. "The public protector wrote to the minister in July requesting a meeting and the minister responded by saying that as the matter is a subject of an ongoing court process, she was not going to avail herself for a meeting with the public protector. "The public protector decided to subpoena the minister because attempts to persuade her to meet have been ignored by the minister." According to SABC board chairperson, Ellen Tshabalala in court papers opposing a court bid by the DA contesting Motsoeneng’s permanent appointment as the COO of the public broadcaster, the SABC cannot punish its chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng for a lie he told 19 years ago. Tshabalala rubbished a report made by public protector Thuli Madonsela, which found that Motsoeneng lied about his matric qualification, gave himself undue salary increases and purged staff members.

SANRAL Wars in Cape Town
The SA National Roads Agency (SANRAL) dug in its heels in the Cape Town High Court, refusing to make public documents related to the proposed tolling of the N1 and N2 freeways. The application – to ensure that supplementary papers on the proposed N1/N2 Winelands Toll Highway Project not be put on public record – is the latest development in an ongoing legal battle between the parastatal and the City of Cape Town. In May last year, the City of Cape Town municipality was granted an interim interdict to halt the tolling project. Sanral said that the City of Cape Town has failed to explain to the public that Sanral has not awarded the tender to any of the bidders and is only at the preferred bidder stage of the process. Democratic Alliance and Right2Know (R2K) campaign members picketed outside the Western Cape High Court on Monday in protest over a Sanral application to have its provincial tolling court case kept out of the public domain. Around 50 DA members in blue shirts kept warm by singing and dancing. They also held up signs stating: "Say No to Toll". On the other side of the road, a small group of R2K protesters held up a sign stating: "Secrecy is for skelms [crooks]". Next to the sign was a cardboard cut-out of a red loudspeaker tied in a knot.

Chaos at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)
Different factions and fiction at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) creates chaos shown in this Zapiro cartoon.
New developments unfold at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Once again the future of its national director is in doubt after Zuma announced an inquiry into his fitness for office. Nxasana failed to get his security clearance as he had not disclosed that he had once been charged for murder (though he was acquitted), or other brushes with the law. In a new move in the high stakes battle between the country's most senior prosecutors, the National Prosecuting Authority has decided to charge Lawrence Mrwebi, the controversial head of the NPA's specialised commercial crimes unit.

The Zooma Family Name Jetpack
South African president Jacob Zuma has been accused of nepotism after appointing his 25-year-old daughter to a senior government post. Thuthukile Zuma has moved from a role as a public liaison officer to the powerful position of chief of staff within two months. The youngest of Zuma's four daughters, her new career means she now earns almost a million rand a year. The row comes with the president, a Zulu traditionalist with four wives and 21 children, still trying to shrug off a scandal over the spending of taxpayer millions on upgrades at his family homestead. Zuma's governing African National Congress (ANC), re-elected in May, has long been dogged by allegations of patronage and cronyism.

Israeli Army Warnings to Gazans about Forthcoming Bombings
Israel’s military has been calling and texting residents of the Gaza Strip for weeks, warning civilians of impending military strikes against Hamas targets. There have been leaflets, too, dropped by the thousands, urging residents of certain neighborhoods to flee. This is the message from the Israeli Defence Force. “It is the intention of the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] to carry out aerial strikes against terror sites and operatives in Shuja’iya and Zeitoun ... For your own safety, you are requested to vacate your residence immediately and head towards Gaza City,” read one recent example, provided by the IDF. “The evacuation is for your own safety. You should not return to the premises until further notice.” The problem is the Gazans have no freedom of movement ... They are effectively trapped

Are EFF’s Red Overalls a Political Symbol or a Stunt?
Julius Malema says "An unjust law is not law at all. And that is starting with the dress code. Why should people be refused to enter Parliament in overalls and be restricted to suits and ties?"
