3 Lessons for Turbulent Times from Great Leaders

Turbulent times define a leader which, consequently, makes or breaks the team. One of the best ways to learn is from lessons from past great leaders. Here are three timeless gems that fit today’s challenging environment.

Break the Psychological Barriers in Turbulent Times

3 Lessons for Turbulent Times from Great LeadersFirst, break the psychological barriers. Franklin Delano Roosevelt became the 32nd President of the US during the Great Depression. This crisis and turbulent time rocked the country. Outgoing President Hoover asked FDR to reassure the worried public. Instead, in his inaugural address in 1933 FDR told the public, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.”

With candor, and empathy and optimism FDR defined the difficulties but painted a picture of hope and opportunity. Then, he declared the need for change from “outworn tradition” and instituted a cause not about money but about helping others. He rallied the nation, and then implemented the unprecedented New Deal to back up his talk. As a result, the country began to move forward.  Insightful, positive, and constructive communication fans the flames of people’s motivation while quelling their fears when faced with dire times.

Communicate a Grand Goal in Turbulent Times

3 Lessons for Turbulent Times from Great LeadersSecond, communicate a grand goal.  On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1. This intensified the arms race and cold war tensions. The Russian launch crushed the morale of the US effort. The US Space Agency at the time experienced many failures. President Eisenhower invested more money so they could catch up.  The push to reorganize the agency led to more rocket failures. This continued until a new President, John F. Kennedy, spoke to Congress and the nation May 25, 1961. He boldly declared, “First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.”

Dr. Charles Garfield worked in the space agency at the time. He shared that almost overnight the morale and performance of the organization became supercharged. The positive goal inspired them. Human and creative performances took gigantic leaps forward. Of course, the goal was gloriously realized. Give your team a worthy goal that captures their imaginations.

Lead by Example in Turbulent Times

3 Lessons for Turbulent Times from Great LeadersFinally, lead by example. In Feb. 1990 South Africa’s Victor Verster Prison released Nelson Mandela from prison after he spent 27 years in jail. Four years later the country elected him as their first black President. However, racial tensions mounted as mutual distrust between blacks and whites heighten. Mandela sought an avenue to unite the country in spite of the turbulent times.

The country’s Springboks rugby team was awful, and Mandela noticed the blacks cheered not for their team but the opposing teams. Coincidently, South Africa was host for the World Cup in 1995. So, it was in the tournament. The poem Invictus by William Henley (see below) had inspired Mandela in jail. He shared it with the white captain of the Rugby team. Mandela brilliantly realized the symbol the team represented and openly mentored the team and captain. The team began to change by demonstrating that blacks and whites could play and win together. South Africa, in a stunning upset, won the World Cup. This phenomenon embraced the heart of the nation and it began to heal the country. In summary, leaders that coach their teams positively instill in them an inner drive to improve regardless of the circumstances.

Pulling It All Together

In turbulent times, these examples give us three viable ways to ignite team success. Notice, the eloquence of the communication, the power of a big goal and the grace of serving through leading by example. In conclusion, as John Kenneth Galbraith defined, “All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common: it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership.”

Invictus

BY WILLIAM ERNEST HENLEY

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeoning’s of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.

Your Greatest Resource is a Positive Attitude

What is your greatest resource? If I were to give you $250,000 for your lungs, would you take it? Or if I were to give you $500,000 for your heart, would you make a trade? How about $1 million for your brain? Certainly, no one is seriously interested in such an offer. You cannot put a price tag on these parts of the body. Therefore, what is your greatest resource? Is it your lungs? Your heart? Your brain? No, a positive attitude is your greatest resource in life.

Former presidential candidate George Romney said, “I didn’t say I didn’t say it. I said, I didn’t say, I didn’t say, I didn’t say I said it. I want to make this perfectly clear.” Really? Let me be perfectly clear about one item. You are unique! In addition, you have unlimited potential and ability to succeed in your career. Behavioral scientists say we use only 1% of our potential. Contrary to Alzheimer’s research, scientists also say we only lose 1% of our potential throughout our life. We need to make sure that the 1% we lose is not the 1% we use. So, how do we do that? Read on!

Your Greatest Resource is a Positive AttitudeA behavioral study that I read stated that 93% of the success of an individual is due to his or her attitude. Only 7% of his or her success is due to job knowledge, communications skills, and technical expertise. Therefore, people with a positive attitude learn what they need to know and get results.

For example, consider these two positive attitudes worth developing: expect the best of yourself and others, and believe you cannot fail!

Your Greatest Resource: Expect the Best of Yourself and Others!

Imagine when you went fishing you said: “I won’t catch anything as usual, I hate sitting in the boat, the lakes are too crowded, my buddy’s a clod and will screw up everything, or this is going to be boring”.

Would you enjoy fishing? Would you purchase new tackle or try new spots to improve your catch? No way! You probably would not even go fishing. Your negative attitude already predicted the potential outcome. Instead, why not expect the best?

Your Greatest Resource is a Positive AttitudeIn the 1984 Olympics, Mary Lou Retton was down to her last jump in the vault. She was in second place to the East German gymnast. Mary needed a 9.95 to tie for the gold medal and a perfect 10.0 to win. What do you think her attitude was? I cannot do it! My coach is a jerk? I am nervous and scared.

Dr. Denis Waitley, a behavioral psychologist, talked to Mary Lou just after the event. He learned what she thought about the jump. Mary Lou said to herself, “I need a 10. Get a 10. I need to run hard, extend, tuck and plant. This one is for you, Mom and Dad. Now do it.” Then she exploded down the runway. She got a 10, a perfect score. Mary Lou did not go for a tie; she went for the gold. She expected the best and would achieve the best. A positive attitude was her greatest resource.

Consequently, here are three lessons from this story. First, Mary Lou had a goal and plan. She prepared long and hard. Second, she dedicated her win to her parents, not herself. Winners have an uncommon desire to serve others. Third, she took purposeful and determined action. That is expecting the best!

Your Greatest Resource: Believe You Cannot Fail!

Your mind will do what you program it to do over time. Are you setting yourself up for career failure or success? A department store was having problems with theft. To combat the problem, the store played a subliminal message with the background music. The message said, “Don’t steal; shoplifters will be prosecuted.” Shoplifting went up 25%. The negative message encouraged people to steal. So, the store changed the message to say, “Be nice and honest. Pay at the cashier.” As a result, shoplifting went down.

What messages do you give yourself or your co-workers? Do you always criticize what is happening, or do you consistently complain about your employees or customers? It will set you up for failure: problems with co-workers, relationship issues, and even sickness. To clarify, your thoughts over time rule your actions. However, why not do it a different way?

Your Greatest Resource is a Positive AttitudeBelieve you cannot fail as David Stevens does. He went to the annual Minnesota Twins tryout camp. The Twins officials were flabbergasted. They could not understand why David was trying out. You see David had no legs. The Twins’ managers talked to David to find out who he was. They discovered that he was a champion wrestler, he hit .500 on his high school baseball team, and he also played middle guard in football. The Twins asked him, “Why are you trying out– you aren’t going to make the team?” David responded that he did not have to be at work until 2 p.m., so why not try out? He demonstrated his greatest resource. Therefore, he had no limits or boundaries, did he?

Pulling It All Together

How many of us in the situations above would never try. We would think of failing, or worry about what other people would say. Do not believe it anymore! Like a tiny acorn that has the pattern of a mighty oak tree in it, you have talent, strengths, and reserve potential. Expect the best in all that you do. Have PRIDE! To help tap your potential, try every day to review your goals and plans. Likewise, take time to visualize success and affirm it positively in your mind. Also, keep learning by reading books in your field, attending seminars, and listening to uplifting motivational messages. Above all, always believe that you cannot fail. Remember this: there is no self-improvement, only increasing the ability to be all that you already are.

In summary, your greatest resource becomes a state of being not a destination or journey. Certainly, with the right attitudes–leading, selling, taking care of customers, or living life, for that matter, is a whole lot easier!

The Number One Trait of Horrible Bosses

The #1 trait of horrible bosses is not that uncommon. While there are many despicable traits of a bad boss, the biggest complaint is that they are persistent purveyors of negative vibes. They are downright nasty and crabby most of the time. The words that spew from their mouths are offensive.

Negative politics has become an art and a weapon. While it has always been around, with social media it moves at the speed of light reaching more people faster. Research suggests that negatives ads are more memorable, change people’s minds and can increase voter turnout. It is well known that negative headlines get much more attention for the media. However, it does not work the same way for managers.

The Impact of a Horrible Bosses Behavior

The Number One Trait of Horrible BossesResearch shows poor leaders or bosses increase employee turnover and stress and decrease engagement and performance. They drive people apart; they do not bring them together through a compelling vision or consensus. Employee engagement worldwide is in the low thirty percentile according to Gallup. That is a disaster. Therefore, there are a lot of managers out there not leading well. Here are examples of the bad news behavior that makes them stick out like a pimple on your nose.

Belittling or criticizing employees, co-workers, or others
Foul language
Sarcasm
Trite platitudes
Insults
Instigator of conflict
Focus on weaknesses or mistakes
Temper tantrums
Blaming others for their problems
Dishonesty, lies or half truths

Managers that treat employees abusively, and disrespectfully are bad bosses. Consequently, they tend not to be transparent, supportive, or helpful to employees. Their main concern is to look out for number one.

What Horrible Bosses Never Know

I believe leadership is about positive influence and trust. For example, the main rule for enlightened leadership is that it is not about you it’s about the team. This is inconceivable to a bad manager.

The Number One Trait of Horrible BossesAbove all, according to research, good communication is the main element needed for strong partnerships. Most people would have a heart attack if a bad boss said an encouraging word. Negative or a lack of communication is the top killer of employee engagement. As a result, it creates dejection, conflict, fear, frustration, ambiguity, and resentment. All of which eventually produces poorer performance of even the best employees. A manager that fosters negativism quickly destroys his or her credibility. Furthermore, even with the title or position, they can never be a genuine leader. Of course, you know that or will know that if you work for a horrible boss.

Pulling It All Together

Unfortunately, horrible bosses are like dinosaurs that still stalk the halls of the corporate world or other organizations. In addition, if they make a profit, own the company, are elected for some reason, or have relationships with key people companies keep them around. Certainly, their incompetence should have them fired.

However, horrible bosses (in my opinion they are not leaders but an entirely unnatural species of beings) cannot hide forever. What they say and do exposes their ineptness. They are like a cavity in a tooth. Left alone long enough, it will do enough painful damage that cannot be ignored.

Agree? What are your thoughts?

A Positive Mindset that Overwhelms Defeat

Is it hard for you to keep a positive mindset in the midst of failure or struggles? Do you ever get down and just want to quit? Have you felt that the the same old positive thinking approaches don’t work anymore?

A Renewed Positive Mindset Affirmation

Tohei Sensei from Chicago visited our Aikido dojo in St. Paul. He watched our children practice new moves in their class along with the other students. Consequently, most struggled with the training as they progressed and as more was expected of them. Consequently, they had a negative not a positive mindset or viewpoint,

A Positive Mindset that Overwhelms DefeatAbruptly, Tohei Sensei stopped the class to discuss learning, growing, and staying centered. He called a boy to the front of the class and asked him: “Do you have a million dollars?”  The boy giggled and said, “No!” Sensei shared, “Instead of  NO, remain open to the possibility and say, NOT YET!” As a result, it became a powerful motivational affirmation for the class.

Pandemics & Problems with a Positive Mindset

As this pandemic reminds us, life is rife with struggles, problems, stressors, and setbacks. Therefore, none of them are easy to cope with. But, we do have tremendous control over our thinking and perspective about all life situations. For instance, research in neuroscience and positive thinking supports this long held wisdom.

Above all, these teachings remind us that we will not be perfect when dealing with our challenges in life. If we say “No” or “I can’t” to change or improvement we make a finite answer and the problem becomes our master. However, if we say, “Not yet”, we give ourselves permission to think optimistically, not negatively, with a positive mindset. And, to do this while making mistakes or in the midst of painful troubles.

Pulling It All Together

A Positive Mindset that Overwhelms DefeatAikido is often defined as the way of a harmonizing spirit. Furthermore, it is a philosophy involves overcoming self rather than the opponent. Also, it means learning to have a positive mindset in dealing with fear, doubt or worry. Therefore, do not resist the struggle, embrace it. Seek peace and relaxation during the problem by visualizing goal succes and better outcomes. For example:

Is the pandemic over? “Not yet!”
Are those debts paid? “Not yet!”
Do I have a new job? “Not yet!”
Have I learned that skill? “Not yet!”
I am I cancer-free? “Not yet!”

As we think differently and make this positive mindset switch, most importantly, we remain flexible and open to positive possibilities that could happen or may even overwhelm defeat. Consider, Mahatma Gandhi’s statement, “Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.”

The High Performance Formula Drives Employee Success

The high performance formula is a recipe for greatness. This means creating a place where employees want to a good job, routinely go the extra mile, improve productivity, and are highly engaged in their jobs. The formula represents areas where managers can initiate positive behaviors. As a result, employees respond with excellent if not great results.

The High-performance Formula Defined

The High Performance Formula Drives Employee SuccessBottom-line, high performance is about achieving extraordinary outcomes. This means reaching and exceeding company goals. It also means finding ways to become consistently better. Eventually, it turns into setting new company standards and redefining what is possible. Good Bosses inspire people to achieve high performance. They have learned this high-performance formula if only by experience. As a result, the formula guides them in creating extraordinary teamwork, too. It is a function of paying attention to employee’s need and want to do a good job. Bad Bosses do not know what to do or do not really care about it. They may talk about it, but it never gets done on a sustainable basis.

Clear expectations Starts the Formula

Great performance starts with clear expectations and goals. It is all about these questions:

What are our goals and priorities?
How are we going to work together?
What is the plan to succeed?

This must be discussed with each employee. Also, with the whole team.  The high-performance formula requires genuine communication, collaboration, and care.

Competence Drives High Performance

Competence means the employee’s job skills and knowledge. In any profession, the best performers continually practice getting better at their trade. A concert pianist puts in untold hours to play with effortless grace. Disney provides more training to 18- to 20-year-olds than most managers ever receive. All baseball players prepare in the off season and spring training. In addition, during the regular season they continue to practice before games. Therefore, upgrading employee competence is a key component of the high-performance formula.

The High Performance Formula Drives Employee SuccessTo compete today, managers need to relentlessly educate and train their employees. Companies should hire competent people first, but then you need to keep them learning. “World-class” training is the equivalent of 5% of payroll budget. Most managers do not have that kind of budget or a training department. Yet, they do not really need to. Managers do need to learn to train and partner with their HR teams where appropriate. Practically speaking employees need weekly, monthly, and quarterly training. It is not always teaching people what they do not know. In addition, it is about fine-tuning their current skills. Also, it is upgrading what they can do. The best companies provide an average of 60 hours of training per employee per year. Most of all, this on-going training improves performance.

Commitment to High Performance

Commitment involves employee willingness and desire to do the job. Most people have this to a certain degree because they want a paycheck. It has been said that the number one reason people go to work is because the alarm went off. While that is stretching the truth, it emphasizes a key principle. People go to make a living. Moreover, they are not doing the job for free. The work and the income stimulate the motivation to do the job well.

However, that is not enough today. Business is tough and competitive. A manager must pay attention to what motivates people. Therefore, this includes doing team meetings, giving recognition, and listening to problems. Consequently, these actions build trust and positive relationships. The high-performance formula defines a proven roadmap for this.

A High-Performance Climate

A supportive environment inspires people to do better. Certainly, good bosses pay attention to this. Bad bosses do not. Climate involves:

Positive, not a negative atmosphere
Clear goals, not vague visions
Listening, not telling
Recognition, not criticism
Teamwork, not isolationism
Defined values, not rhetoric
A sense of purpose, not business as usual
Fun and having a good time, not boring and routine
Innovative, not same old same old
Integrity, not disreputable practices
Clear values, not confusion

For another example, see these contrasting situations:

When I was growing up, our family would visit our two aunts over the holidays. When my six brothers and sisters and I trooped in, one aunt would rush us downstairs. We were not allowed to come upstairs and had to be careful not to mess up her house. We hated going to her house. As a result, we always seemed to cause problems and misbehave. Our other aunt loved it when we came over. We could go anywhere, and she always had games for us to play. We liked going there and were well-mannered every time we did.

Therefore, the climate a manager creates sets the tone for employee engagement. Above all, it trumps the company culture.

Consistency Drives the High-Performance Formula

To sum up, consistency in focus delivers great results. Any manager can do what is described occasionally. For instance, here are the signs that a manager’s behavior is inconsistent.

A Success Mindset: 3 Priority Keys for Action

A success mindset involves your attitudes, feelings, values, and beliefs about yourself. As a result, you are a success regardless of the current circumstances, wins or losses, victories or defeats. Success is not a cookie-cutter, once-in-a lifetime idea. It’s not about money, position, influence, or power. It’s not a journey or destination. We have seen many people with the high life in material things lead despicable lives. Furthermore, they treat others with disrespect and disdain. For example, what if a billionaire and person barely making ends meet walk by someone lying in the street in pain? But, the billionaire doesn’t even notice the situation. The other person stops to help and calls 911. Who really cares?  Who really is a success in life?

Therefore, however you define it; keep the following keys in mind to cultivate your success mindset:

state of being
support

A SUCCESS MINDSET IS A STATE OF BEING

A Success Mindset: 3 Priority Keys for ActionSuzy stood in front of her kindergarten class for show-and-tell and declared, “Today, I’m not here to talk about a pet, a book or a story. I am here to tell you about someone I consider quite fascinating – myself.” Suzy believed in herself! A success mindset instills motivation to get up and act even when things are tough or hard. Could real success also be the positive belief that you are already an important and worthy person, no matter what? Above all, success is a state of being, something that enables everything else to fall into place. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “Self-esteem is the first step to success.”

 FIND YOUR SUPPORT

People are social by nature. That is to say, people need others. What would life be like without your spouse, family, friends or co-workers? In truth without others, probably not nearly as meaningful or fulfilling. The people around you are important. Their support will help you. Success requires support. Many professional teams with tons of talent fail to win when players don’t operate as a team. So, share your goals with others you can trust to build you up not tear you down. And do the same for them. Bob Conklin has stated many times, “To get everything in life you want, give enough other people what they want.”

Furthermore, Harvard professor, Daniel Goleman, studies the importance of emotional intelligence. He argues that two areas define success. First,  personal competence (self-mastery) is the initial requirement. Second, social competence (people skills) is crucial. His work shows these are vital to a success mindset in our personal and professional lives.

 USE A SUCCESS MINDSET SYSTEM

A Success Mindset: 3 Priority Keys for ActionThe system has always been simple. To clarify, start by knowing what you want. Set goals and a plan. Persistently pursue them. Then, keep learning and don’t quit. Consequently, all the research and self help gurus will tell you something similar. Most importantly, successful people master a system similar. Closely observe success people, and you will notice certain characteristics about them. Studies reveal that highly successful people in all walks of life are:

Self-confident believers.
Dreamers and goal setters.
Action-oriented and persistent.
Helpful, caring and cooperative with others.
Happy, fun loving and joyful.

If any of these are missing people tend not to feel successful. Unfortunately, they tend to be selfish and self-centered egotists. In conclusion, a success mindset isn’t made of magic. Despite popular opinion, success is defined by who you are. It’s not defined what you have. Becoming successful at whatever it is, takes initiative to develop personal talents and abilities. You have to work at it. Yet, there is no self-improvement, only increasing in the ability to be all that you already are. Certainly, believe that and you are well on your way.

What Employees Really Want at Work

With low employee engagement a global phenomena companies don’t to seem to care about what their teams want. Yet, businesses are challenged in today’s marketplace to get and keep good people.  Organizations produce employee engagement problems because of poor bosses and toxic workplaces. Consequently, over 70% of employees don’t trust executives. As a result, companies leave money on the table, managers fail and employees have little loyalty.

What Employees Really Want at Work A great leadership revolution is beginning. With the pandemic more companies are realizing how important their people really are. Some are beginning to change. What do employees want or need? They don’t want stupid stuff. For example, there was the Bubonic plague in the western US. It was contained and so the government spent millions to figure out how to prevent things like that. What did the government do? They created a marketing campaign to tell people, “DON’T play with dead animals.” Duh?

3 Keys to What Employees Want

Employees want three key elements. See the video clip for more details.

Partnership
Personal Development
Purpose

Be on the forefront of this revolution. Apply these with enthusiasm. Therefore, make sure you take notes to identify how managers need to take four critical actions to ensure this happens.

In addition, consider these two powerful quotes:

“Employees who believe that management is concerned about them as a whole person-not just as an employee-are more productive, more satisfied, more fulfilled. Satisfied employees mean satisfied customer which leads to profitability.” Ann Mulcahy

“When people go to work they shouldn’t have to leave their hearts at home.” Betty Bender

Finally, if all of this helps and makes sense give this video a “THUMBS UP” please. Thank you!
