PineApple Women Rock!

A Latin American favorite likely to have originated in South America, the pineapple is a tropical fruit that wears a crown and stands tall. The royal fruit was the inspiration for the name of this thriving female community of empowered Latinas. Pineapple Women was started to inspire others to open their minds, share stories, motivate and create change. The site’s name is symbolic with the ties to the roots of the delicious fruit, among them hospitality, energy, and pride.

Andrea Chaves co-founded Pineapple Women along with her sister. The sisters equally contributed to the vision of this thriving community.  Andrea, the pineapple lover wanted to represent her Latin American vibes and give back not only to her native Colombia but to a sisterhood.  She currently lives in Los Angeles. Previously resided in London after establishing herself as a teacher in New York City for a decade. Life experience and the desire to be a role model empowered her to become what she imagined. Andrea’s list of accomplishments demonstrates her aspirations as a leader will not go unnoticed.

She started various important programs to benefit students. Starting with a Multicultural Club of the Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria (TYWLSA) and Dance My Culture Club (DMC). An Eco-Friendly Fashion Show (EFFS) that began as a Spanish class project, where kids learned about recycling combined with a clothing unit. Initiated Tech Crew and Tech Explorers for girls creating fun and original projects. The inspiration continues today with PineApple Women.

The work required to empower girls and women is a delicate balance. Firstly, one must fearlessly lead by example. Be a pioneer of new ideas but willing to adopt different mindsets that benefit women over the years. Andrea Chaves and Pineapple Women provide a platform for Latinas to showcase their voice and learn from one another. Check @Pineapple.Women’s growing community on Instagram.

It is always a pleasure to have a small part of other women’s mission. Thank you Pineapple Women for putting the spotlight on Awakened-Woman in April!

One Nation, Many Females – What is Your Role?

Daring, brave, confident and bold are words used to describe the women I’ve been lucky to meet during my personal and entrepreneurial journey. While some women have the awareness to see their gifts, others need a little help understanding the power in being a woman. Either way, there is plenty to learn from each other, as we look to define the roles we have chosen.

I recently sat down with Whitedove Gannon, host of FEMnation. “The down-to-earth chick with a different name” as introduced in her energetic and informative podcast. She is the founder of the Female Entrepreneur Movement (FEM). A mother of five and a long-time entrepreneur. Whitedove creates greatness by encouraging women on the path to building their dream. I was delighted the host invited me to come on the podcast to tell the AW story.

Femnation gives women entrepreneurs a voice. This is a podcast for you if you’re looking to be inspired during your own journey. The discussions are useful in breaking down some of the hurdles that come with being a woman in business, as well as, offering ideas or suggestions to consider while working to achieve goals. Hardships are expected as you turn a hobby into a side hustle or convert passion into a living. Being ready to accept and embrace your purpose on this emotional road is key. Throwing your hands up in the air is not an option. The candid conversations taking place between the host and guests are sure to empower women as they try to get unstuck while climbing the entrepreneurial ladder.

Women are increasingly stepping into bigger shoes, making us more visible in business, politics, education, technology, and other areas of society. Ongoing learning, taking on bigger challenges to build intellect is crucial to the process of our evolution. Therefore, podcasts, books, making interesting connections that add value and know-how enriches life in more ways than one. You, me and future generations have a responsibility to contribute to the better of society, whether or not we want it.

So, what is your role in society? In a nation of strong women, how will you make your mark to inspire others as they become their best selves? Be bold enough to let your voice be heard. We are interconnected by the stories we live. Think about all the women that can be helped, if we share, even one of our stories with one another. Whitedove offers Femnation as a platform to do just that! Make sure to check out this cool podcast!

Femnation is sure to fire you up if you need motivation. Check out Whitedove Gannon in Femnation on any of the following outlets: Apple | iHeart | Google | Spotify | Stitcher | Podbean

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

A minute may not seem like a lot of time but a lot can happen in less time. Stop to consider the world around you, simultaneous lives happening all over the world. Did you know that a sexual assault occurs every 73 seconds in the United States? An alarming statistic, isn’t it? The estimate could be higher, as many assaults go unreported.

Sexual assault is defined as unwanted sexual contact of any form. Rape, assault, molestation, incest, sexual abuse or violence by a stranger or known attacker. The long term effects from these crimes are detrimental to its victims, varying from PTSD, depression, increase in thoughts of suicide or possible drug abuse. These crimes can also affect the manner in which victims manage the relationships in their lives. The list of psychological, emotional, and physical consequences are painfully devastating to the victim, as well as, those closest to them.

The vast majority of victims are women, however, sexual assault also happens to men, children and transgenders. The suffering due to this violent crime can last a lifetime for some women. Unfortunately, a number of them will not get help or simply, may not have access to it. The possible shame and embarrassment that could be felt from the stigma of being a victim sometimes discourages women from getting the assistance needed to cope with the psychological damage.

Help create awareness, there is help to cope with the aftermath. If you or someone you know has been a victim, they have the option to reach out to RAAIN and be connected to a trained staff member who can assist in finding a contact in your local area. All calls are safe and confidential.

Go to RAAIN to find out more information.

Nikki Boyer Offers Her Thoughts on New Podcast that Women Should Listen To!

An open discussion about mortality is intimidating, sometimes too real to ponder. I imagine that being on the opposite side of a thriving life is scary. Getting the news you are dying and there’s nothing you can do about it has to be crippling. Can you visualize living with a death sentence? Who would you want to spend it with? What things would you like to do before your involuntary departure? It happens more often than we’d like to think, it happened to Molly.

The 3-time Emmy Award Winner, Television Host, Actress and Podcast Co-Creator/Host, Nikki Boyer from the popular podcast, Dying for Sex follows her friend’s sexual adventures after receiving a diagnosis of terminal cancer. The unique aspect of this podcast is how Molly selflessly allows listeners into her entire journey. She opens the door to let us see her resolution of personal challenges from how she coped with childhood events, taking control of her sexuality after the marital separation, learning to forgive and love herself until finally coming to terms with letting go.  Molly’s bravery was profound, as was Nikki’s when she made the decision to support her best friend, unconditionally. The vibrant Molly was about to live out the rest of the time she had, fearlessly.

Stage IV breast cancer capsized Molly’s life. It sent a bolt of lightning to her existence taking her on a trip that she would not return from. The unhappy state of her 15-year marriage suddenly shifted, the pretending stopped. The decision to leave her husband arrived after a period of discontent that came long before the illness. This is where “Dying for Sex” begins, the point triggering a rebirth sparking a six-part miniseries. But the podcast is about much more than a succession of Molly’s erotic episodes. The conversations that take place between Molly and Nikki are raw, genuine and very intimate. It is refreshing to hear women, unapologetically be themselves. They reinforce how having a voice and self-confidence to own your truth is empowering no matter where you are in life. The friendship shared by the pair demonstrates how nurturing and valuable female bonds are for us. Nikki’s willingness to really see Molly saved her friend in many ways. Her love and acceptance seemed to offer a safe haven, especially during a time she most needed it.

Having just completed the podcast, I understood its purpose. It is not a frivolous tale of escapades but a story.  A woman looking to feel alive and in control of her body sets out on a mission to find herself and answers. She accomplishes what she sets out to do by learning to embrace desires, past ghosts, and a reality. In order to find inner peace and closure, Molly had to come to terms with everything that happened in her life up until the present time. Their exchange of emotions combined with curiosity as adventures are revealed will sure to make you laugh, cry, and reflect while appreciating life. The narrative deserves an ear without judgment to truly grasp how the power of vulnerability builds connection. You are likely to feel inspired and encouraged when listening to these women. Leading you to think about your own life and how you want to live from this day forward. The relationship between them is full of humor and tenderness, enticing the most conservative listener to enter their world. Nikki’s storytelling skills captivate the trajectory of a woman who makes up her mind to live life out loud.

Nikki Boyer was gracious enough to send AW her thoughts on the podcast and why it’s important that women take the time to find out what Dying for Sex is about…

“I feel that this podcast is important for women to hear because it is so often that our sexuality is tied in with shame or double standards.  I think Molly’s journey is a reminder that we ARE allowed to figure out our own path no matter what it looks like from the outside.  Her journey was so authentic and honest, and I’m so grateful to have been part of it.  I think this podcast reminds women and everyone, that we get to decide what to do with the time we have left.  We have the power to explore who we are whether it’s sexually, spiritually… etc!  So what are you dying for?  And why not make that something you’re doing IN YOUR LIFE?”

The final episode of the Dying for Sex brings the pieces together for Molly and its audience but not before presenting us with some nuggets of wisdom to help women on their own journey to becoming whole. The immense impact we have on each other is undeniable. I recommend listening to all six parts of the podcast in chronological order to get the full effect of the message being transmitted. The content can be graphic as it deals with topics of a sensitive sexual nature, and other subject-matters that can be jarring, as real life can often be, sometimes. It offers something different for everyone. Particularly, a perspective that stands outside the conventional box but well worth examining. May Molly’s journey inspire you to set your own rules, as you figure out how to live on purpose.

Dying for Sex for mature audiences only and can be found on Wondery, Spotify. and Apple Podcasts.

I extend my sincere gratitude to Nikki Boyer for taking to time to share her wonderful words with our AW readers.

March 29, 2020

Pause. Hold. Later.

How many times have you put something you wanted to do on hold? Has there been a time when you thought “I’ll do this later – next week, month or year?” We are wrapping up the first quarter of 2020 and everything – life as we know it is on pause. The temporary stop is not only taking place in New York but all over the globe. Billions of people have ceased their routines. Lives have come to a screeching halt in an effort to help save the vulnerable. The worst part is the uncertainty, as well as, the fact, that there is nothing we can do to change it.

I can’t share the number of times I put off learning something new, delayed a dream trip or stopped myself from telling someone how I felt. I don’t know how often inaction won the internal tug of war. It seemed there was never a right time to do the things imagined. The perfect moment did not arrive, so I postponed again and again. A list of “I want to do” without a date. The current pause has left me wishing I would have said, YES, more. The courage to accept a new challenge, adventure or journey that could have lifted me higher.

How are you handling this period of Pause?  When the world resumes again, what will you take off Hold? Anything you won’t leave for Later, anymore?

Honestly, there is a pang of slight guilt, possibly, regret when I look back to only a few months ago. Time moves rapidly, leaving us only, with what we’ve lived out loud. Whether we realize it or not this global health crisis will change the way we move forward with our lives after the ordeal is behind us. When you are quarantined at home alone, fleeing your thoughts is not an option. Regardless of the room, you are standing in, there are no outside distractions to keep you from pondering life, love, relationships, children, family, job, past mistakes, or a future. Hiding from yourself is a task too big when you are living in your head. Inevitably, it can lead to performing an internal query relating to personal happiness. Does this scene sound familiar?

Like many of you, I too, have been examining life and how I can do things differently after the pandemic is over. It is normal to be fearful, anxious or stressed about what comes next but I offer a different perspective during this phase. How about taking this time out to set realistic goals for ourselves? Make a list of activities or objectives you want to accomplish short term. I’m not referring to a 5-year plan but a few things you’d like to achieve as little or big as you wish. The essential part of the exercise is to find a positive in this moment of uncertainty. There is no question a great number of men, women, and children will come out of this time stronger, more mindful of their surroundings. Hopefully, incredibly aware of the value there is in living an abundant and full life.

Let’s start tomorrow with a grateful heart and renewed hope for the future. In the meanwhile, use the pause to think about what your new normal will look like when it’s all said and done.

Amazing News!

The journey as an author has given me a chance to connect with some amazing women. Working with BELatina News provides an opportunity to write articles that take me out of my comfort zone, inspiring me as a professional and a woman. In this week’s article, I interviewed Summer-Joy “SJ” Main Munoz, a 2nd generation Latina making her directorial debut tonight on one of the hottest shows on television, Chicago Med‘s, Episode 18 on NBC-TV.

The interview left me feeling genuinely inspired, as I listened to a fellow Latina discuss some of the same things I often think about, too. I invite you to read “NBC Puts Females Forward: Tune Into 2nd Generation Latina SJ Main Munoz’s Chicago Med Directorial Debut” at BELatina News. The director gave me a peek into her perspective on the importance of having a clear vision of what you want, honing in on your craft, and nurturing your dream. She also discusses the NBC Females Forward initiatives making a difference in the Film&TV industry, as well as, the impact of owning who you are and living your truth.

I am grateful to have the chance to write articles that inspire, empower and encourage women to pursue their own passions.

How Passion for Self-Expression Led to Finding Purpose

Ariana, Miya, Shayla, and Brit are some of the most recognizable beauties of the collection. Vogue Magazine showcased three Ariana ponies in the music video “In My Head.” The Ariana Grande Vogue Cover Video Performance has since sparked thousands of doppelgangers. The dramatically sexy look spread like wildfire, sparking young girls and women everywhere to try to get the same look at home.

INH Hair was founded in 2018 by a duo girl boss empowered by a dream to help other women discover their badass. Shordyn (@jordynn.wynn and @immbunny) had a passion for self-expression. The pair wanted to help women experiment with their personal style.

ELLE Magazine described the hair extensions from (INH)as the brand to shop, offering affordable hairpieces on the go.” The co-founders have created a community of ladies that not only support one another but celebrate individual beauty.

I recently put the statements to the test by playing around with my personal looks. Feeling like it was time for a change, I decided to take a pony for a spin. On a night out, the effortless look received dozens of compliments. Miya , Molly, and Sammy have become a new obsession these days. It’s one of those accessories I wished I had thought of before – love them! It’s like wearing your favorite necklace, earrings, lipstick or outfit. It can give you a little extra – confidence to make you feel good.

It’s been said, “How you feel on the inside reflects on the outside.” Your appearance tells others a story but true empowerment comes from within. There are plenty of things you can do for inspiration, as you create the best self. Make the decision to take charge of your life, keep your head held high to demonstrate pride and nurture self-love. Lastly, experiment a little, dare to try something new.  A fresh look or color that is flattering, perhaps different makeup or hairstyle that changes your vibe. A woman needs an occasional perk to ignite her assertiveness. There is nothing wrong with showing a little spark to spice things up!

I’m elated that INH Hair has invited AW to collaborate and create new content promoting their mission. Check out AW Instagram , Twitter or Facebook to see videos and photos of some new fun looks.

I hope to hear feedback on your own transformations.

The Wine and Chisme (Gossip)

Female friendships provide many benefits. Having a strong ally on our side can help us through some of the most challenging times in our lives. Girlfriends get us to see straight when we our thinking gets a bit foggy. The gift of sharing the same gender allows us to understand each other in ways men cannot. Our empathy button is one of the advantages we have as a nurturing creature.

Sharing stories among women is one of the best ways to destress and bond. We learn from others and provide a lifeline when instability takes over. The chats can be as light or intimate as we choose. Tough conversations may happen with a glass of wine, cup of tea or coffee depending on the ladies.  Jessica Yanez’,  The Wine and Chisme podcast host, likes to share her love for wine and telling stories over her favorite wine.

The The Wine and Chisme podcast is refreshing. as it is entertaining. The chisme (Spanish for gossip) is spilled by guests while indulging in a pour of wine of the week. The women invited to each episode are real women like you and me. Jessica’s honest, warm and friendly demeanor create an environment that invites people to feel comfortable. She tries to make the conversation as natural as possible without forcing subjects instead she makes space for a natural flow.

The podcast comes at a time when we need healthy distractions from real world news. Listening to positive voices can serve as a reminder that good things continue to flourish all around us. If you can try and focus on the good things in life, it may be easier to push through the bad.

AW will visit the The Wine and Chisme podcast to deliver some chisme (gossip) of my own. Look out for link with more details. Coming soon to AW readers!
