"Nice to meet you," she said. "I'll let you two catch up. Katie is in the Kitchen helping Spike tend to the last-minute clean-up. I'll help them finish so they can head out.
"Thanks, hun."
She sauntered over to what Drake could only assume was the kitchen. He turned toward Maverick. "Would it be all right if I crash at your place tonight? I would have called but… I didn't know I was heading out of town until tonight." He sounded like an imbecile with the way he rambled on.
"Did you run away from home?" Maverick teased.

Maverick strode over to him and took his hand in a warm handshake. "Dude, it's been ages. I've kept up with your band. You're making headlines."
"Yeah, it's been a ride."
The dark-haired woman approached them now. "Hello," she said, and her bright blue eyes met his, her smile friendly and welcoming.
Maverick pulled her in close. "This is Rowan Beckett, my fiancée," he said it with pride. "Drake Tennyson," he offered the introductions.

Hopping on a bus, two hours later he arrived at the Heart and Soul. It was just about closing time, but he knew Maverick Sullivan wouldn't turn him away. He'd met the guy at a gig. He used to be in the Roadside Reapers, but now runs the Heart and Soul, a coffeehouse where he hosted local bands. The scent of coffee and pastries hit his senses and his stomach rebelled with a rumble.
A woman with dark hair and holding a clipboard came from the back room and Maverick followed close behind.
"I think we should as the band to come back next month," the woman said. "They packed the house."
"They have a great sound," Maverick said then noticed Drake standing at the door. "Drake? Drake Tennyson?"
Drake's lips curved and held out his arms. "In the flesh, man."

Twirl and Dip (WIP) Drake's POV
He brushed by a woman going in the opposite direction and knocked her souvenir T-shirt out of her hands. He knelt to retrieve it at the same time the woman did and they bumped heads. Both came up with an apology lacing their lips, but the woman's focus narrowed as she took a closer look at Drake's features.
"Hey, aren't you—" she began but he didn't let her finish as he shoved the tee at her and whirled away, not waiting to find out if he'd been recognized, though he had a pretty good idea his ruse was up.
He picked up his pace as he heard the woman shouting, "That's Drake!"
People turned, and he'd be in deep trouble if he didn't think fast. Fans could be brutal. "Omigod!" he said in a high-pitched voice filled with excitement. "Drake is over there signing autographs." He pointed toward the woman and the crowd rushed forward.
(One more sentence to finish the scene)
Drake continued on his way, jumping off the paved walk and onto the grass to avoid the stream of people searching for him.

Twirl and Dip (WIP) Drake's POV
Drake realized his hands held all he needed and hurried out the door and to the emergency exit he'd spotted earlier when the band did their soundcheck. Feeling like a wanted criminal, he pulled the cap down lower. He usually wore contacts, but he occasionally wore glasses as part of disguise to avoid fans. Superman had it right. No one recognized you if you changed your style and wore dark-rimmed glasses.
The red letter exit sign came into view, and he pushed the silver handle as he shoved at the door. Alarms went off, but he didn't slow his pace as he hurried and join the stream of people leaving the venue. He blended in as if he were heading for his vehicle and home, just like everyone else.
He knew LA as well as he did is hometown and the bus station on the next block over would do the trick in ensuring his escape. He had just enough cash to get him where he wanted to go before anyone realized he was missing.

He asked about Eastyn when he phoned home, but his dad didn't have too much to say, other than her soda shop was a hit with the locals and the tourist alike. It wasn't what he wanted to know. He had a hunch his father knew that, too. He should have manned up and just asked the question, but he'd been a coward. If Eastyn was seeing someone, it would prove more than he could take.
Eastyn was one of the good ones, so of course, another guy would see it, too. He'd been the fool, screwing up that relationship.
Finally, after the last song of their set, and three more encore songs, he was able to head back to his dressing room. He changed out his sweaty clothes and into blue jeans and an AC/DC T-shirt and he donned a baseball cap and dark-rimmed glasses. He grabbed his guitar and the glass jar of sugar cones, then stood back to see if he missed anything.

"Then let's get the party started!" He sang an old-time favorite of the fans, one of the first songs he'd written. He remembered playing it for Eastyn Mackenzie on his old beat-up guitar. He grew up with her. They swung on the old tire swing when they were kids and became best friends. Eastyn had been the first to hear his songs he wrote back then. She'd been the first for a lot of things.
When he was alone, which wasn't often, but when he managed the feat, his thoughts turned toward her, making him wondered how life had treated her. Did she manage to find the happiness he failed to give her?

The woman appeared to be at least twenty years old but who knew these days with the makeup and the tight clothing. Her fingers gripped his arm as she peered dreamily into his eyes. The words to the song mesmerized her as if the lyrics were written just for her. For that moment, they were, but once the song ended, he handed the star-dazed fan over to the security guard who waited to escort the woman back to her seat.
Drake ran back to centerstage once more and spoke to the crowd. "How are we doing, Los Angeles?"
The roar that came back like a wave of good vibes washing over him, made him grin.
"Are you ready for another song?" Drake asked the crowd.
The roar of yeses rang like thunder.
"I said, are you ready for another song!" He shouted louder as Wyatt, Sam, and Malcolm played their parts, hamming it up with their instrument of choice.

He only sang a few words and the girls closest to the stage screamed in delight. He would be fooling himself if he didn't like the attention, but he needed a break, if only for a little while. He didn't want to be served all his favorite dishes and he didn't want to be waited on when he could do things himself. He needed space. He needed quiet. He needed to work with his hands again and build something.
He danced around the stage and played to the audience and even drew one of the girls up on stage to the two security guards' dismay. Let them steam. What were they going to do? Fire him?
