Our Team Retreat In Mexico: A Tour Of The Home Designed By A Designer/Friend

A few weeks ago the EHD team went to Todos Santos in the Baja peninsula of Mexico for our first international “offsite” with the intent to connect over margaritas and ceviche. AND WE DID. It’s like any long-distance relationship – being in two different states requires frequent IRL connection to keep the relationship as healthy as possible (the out-of-site out-of-mind part of remote work is one of my biggest life challenges so I NEED these hang sessions badly). One of the highlights of the trip (and the reason we chose to go to Todos Santos in the first place) is this incredible home by the owner of one of my favorite LA design boutiques, deKor, Isabelle Dahlin. She has been a friend/colleague of mine for years and is such a beautiful designer (I’ve been a big fan for years). I saw that she was building a house a couple years ago on IG, so I reached out see if it was ready to rent out and indeed it was (and you can rent it here). So today I’ll show you a tour of the property with a main house, a casita and the most adorable little lofted area and call out my favorite design elements.

Izzy found the place a few years ago in total disarray and brought it back to life, with a lot of the original elements (like the thatched roof and plaster walls). It was incredibly charming, warm, and felt like a property you could spend all day at with little different pockets to hang out in.

I loved all the poured concrete pool seats and sofas, this is obviously done more for construction reasons (there aren’t a lot of trees for wood here we were told) but the look is so streamlined and chic (and likely durable?).

The dappling of the light through all the thatched roofs and pergolas really created the most perfect vibe (and those succulents don’t hurt either). Beautiful but still casual.

At one point Caitlin, Mal, Jess, and Gretch spent 3 hours in the pool hanging out on the Baja shelf, playing “colors” and marco polo which was very entertaining for all. There was a lot of giggling (even more as we attempted our own DIY Watsu).

In case you don’t know where we are, it’s a village an hour and a half northwest of Cabo, and while it’s near or on the ocean most of it isn’t swimmable so it doesn’t have a lot of resort culture (but there is a swimmable beach in 15 mins away). The draw of this town is the art, culture, food, design and sense of escape from the spring break party vibe of all the Cabo resorts. Some areas were so adorable and charming and others are still developing. We were so impressed with the restaurants that we went to that we LOVED. Jazamango was INCREDIBLE (get the beef tartare), Tenoch at Paradero (a verrrry cool hotel) was also really delicious, and Oystera was both so tasty and our server made the experience hilarious and fun. We sadly didn’t get to shop much (we needed pool time:)) but Kailtin insisted we stop by Pronto Mu Pronto. It’s filled with beautiful Mexican decor, clothing, and accessories. So glad we did! But the real star of Todo Santos was this house.

We loved how clean and sophisticated it felt, but again still very warm and regionally appropriate. I honestly don’t know enough about this type of architecture or materials to speak to it, but all the exterior design elements were perfect (including the black steel windows) and kept the inside cool and outside warm (we hit perfect weather with 75 degree days).

Izzy did such an incredible job of merging Mexican style with modern amenities. A goal of mine when traveling is to have the experience of the hotel or Airbnb match the location (conversely a huge pet peeve is when you are in a different country and your hotel could be anywhere and feels generic and pulls you out of the cultural experience instead of helping you lean in). I realize this is a champagne problem, obviously, but the last thing you want to do is fly to a different country and stay somewhere that feels like it could be in a suburb of an American city.

We ate out every meal because the food in Todos Santos is incredible but should you want to grill or play games, there is a lovely shaded outdoor kitchen and dining area. Please note the poured cement ping pong table in the back.

There were three structures – the main house, the casita, and the loft. The living room had these two awesome daybed sofas (which you could obviously sleep on like twin mattresses), and a gas fireplace.

Izzy sourced from all over, but if you like this vibe I’d suggest going to one of her stores, deKor, in LA (near Glendale). She collects so many different styles, makes new custom furniture, and sells a lot of vintage. It’s a very high end curated home good store but with a lot of gifts and more affordable pieces as well (and her warehouse sales are epic).

The thatched ceiling really set the vibe and allowed the rest of the space to be really simple, soft, and organic.

The kitchen was super charming and totally functional for our needs. We obviously love the cement cabinetry frame with the wooden fronts (something we don’t do in most regions of America but sure is pretty). I’m assuming cement/concrete is way more affordable in certain places because it’s crazy expensive right now where we are (where wood is more plentiful). I love learning about these regional differences

The dining table has four woven chairs that are just so perfect here and a big bench with storage. And behind that bench is a bedroom with a queen-sized bed.

How adorable is that? PS We made the beds and shot this all before we left so sorry if the beds are a little messy, Izzy. I also love the integrated nightstands. This is where Jess and Caitlin stayed.

There were so many details that we design enthusiasts just loved. The vintage lighting, the vintage rugs, the sweet and simple styling of all the towels and hats.

This is the bathroom in the main structure and as you can see it’s perfect.

The property wasn’t huge but it had all these little pockets that were so pretty and charming. This was right outside the pool area and had an outdoor shower (two on the property) with hot water of course and it was such a fun luxury.

This little area around the back was how you got up to the loft.
The Crows Nest!
Up the spiral stairs was this ADORABLE lofted area with two twin daybeds and a view of the ocean. I loved that she treated this space differently with the bold dark jewel tones.

It feels so not precious but very very special. Oh, and there’s an AC unit in case you were wondering:) Mal and Gretchen had a blast staying up here.
The Casita
On to where Kaitlin and I slept (mostly because I had to share a bed with someone and she is the only non-full-time employee so no HR violation LOLOL). This is the primary suite with a king bed, bathroom, and outdoor shower. It was WONDERFUL to sleep in, so comfy, quiet and with great bedding and pillows.

Izzy designed it really simply with the cement bed and nightstands, vintage rugs and dope vintage lighting. I loved the wall hangings and the Frida Kahlo art (which she bought from Todos Santos) and, of course, those windows are so special (with shutters on the outside).

It felt spacious, uncrowded, simple, and super relaxing with a ton of natural light. At one point when the girls were swimming in the pool, I laid in here and read Funny Story for an hour and it was so peaceful.

And also has AC should you need it!

Onto the bathroom!

The bathroom was so beautiful, warm, and minimal. I loved her faucets and while I don’t know much about them, they were cool and weird and that simple gooseneck is rather sexy. Obviosly the more ornate mirrors with the midcentury lighting is a combination that I LOVED.

A true water closet, I loved this little toilet room. The fact that it’s two swinging doors really helped with the charm.

Lastly our outdoor shower with gorgeous tiles and just an incredibly dreamy location. Jess decided to stay at the house with some friends after we all left for a few more days and took full advantage of getting to sleep and shower. I don’t blame her:)

A few facts about the space: There were six of us which slept comfortably (but no one had their own room). 1 king bed, 1 queen bed, two daybeds in the loft, and two daybeds in the living room. It’s a quick 5-minute bumpy drive to a few coffee shops (and a sweet gallery) and about 8ish minutes to the town. It took about 15 minutes to get to the ocean where we ate at The Green Room but it was crazy cloudy so we didn’t get to see much. Still fun to each on the beach though! We stayed three nights, four days and while the travel from Portland was longer than LA, obviously, it was still pretty affordable to get to (way more than the original New York trip we had planned). It definitely made us more inspired to do international trips specifically to Central and South America which is pretty close to California.

Now a quick call out, if you have an awesome airbnb or boutique hotel and you are looking for more PR awareness and beautiful photography the EHD is certainly open to retreat collaborations/trades. I think it worked out well because we stayed Monday – Thursday so we didn’t take up any of Izzy’s weekend rentals (Well, like I said Jess took advantage this time round), we made a fun reel and took so many photos that she can now share for reference. So yah, if you have a design-forward space (that would be fun to share with readers of a design site) that can sleep six comfortably and are into a trade like this, let us know! Thanks so much to Isabelle Dahlin (Izzy!) for giving us a deal, letting us stay at her beautifully designed home, and giving us a time, space, and reason to spend to connect together outside of normal work.
Come back very very soon! as you might see our first EHD international swimsuit campaign OH BOY!!!! The opening photo was a little sneak peek;)
But first here are a few candids from the team trip, which included horseback riding, so many restaurants – Jazzmango (INCREDIBLE food, great vibes), Paradero, a hotel/restaurant that looked like a contemporary art installation with food that looked like actual art, Oystera (a beautiful tiled and ivy-covered building) that had the best seafood, and The Green Room (Oceanside, good drinks). We also loved the coffee shop near us that had delicious breakfast and lunch in a very charming environment.

Y’all, there might have been some HR violations from our late-night conversations (always led by me) or perhaps my public tableside Watsu demonstration on Mallory, but what happens in Todos Santos stays in Todo Santos, right my EHD TEAM??? GAH! MY GOODNESS I LOVE THESE LADIES!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, Jess, Caitlin, Mal, Gretchen, and Kaitlin (honorary EHD team member!) for bringing a real team/fun spirit. We all feel extremely lucky to enjoy each other so much and while so much of our days are dominated by work, it’s just so much better when you genuinely like and care about the people you are working with. This trip was mostly fun-dominated (only a couple hours of work) and hopefully, that connection will last us til the next retreat (perhaps Costa Rica? Brimfield? New Orleans? Napa? Prince Edward Island (just finished This Sumer Will Be different – so good), Santa Fe or Milan??? We are VERY OPEN :))
But again to stay here GO HERE! If you couldn’t tell we HIGHLY recommend.

How Do You Design A Home With A Partner? Caitlin’s Boyfriend Is Moving In – Here’s How They’re Merging Styles

Huge news: A MAN IS ABOUT TO MOVE INTO MY HOME. Okay, okay – I’ll concede that it might not sound like huge news to you (and that’s fair, because I am a random internet woman), but it’s a very big deal to me, a fully-grown 32-year-old adult who is gearing up to live with a partner for the very first time. This July – after 2.5 years of long-distance dating, nightly FaceTimes, and more plane rides than I can count – my boyfriend Dennis is departing the great state of Delaware (where we’re both from) in favor of the sunnier skies and vibrant city life of Los Angeles. I CANNOT WAIT.
But technically he’s not moving into MY home – he’s moving into OUR home. So today, I’d like to pose a question: how do you design with a partner? It’s a question I’m still working out, but I’d like to share some of the tips and tricks that Den and I have been keeping in mind – starting with understanding our partner’s inspiration and ending with some valuable ideas to consider for anyone else in our boat. (Please feel free to drop any of your cohabitation wisdom in the comments, too – I’m all ears and would love to hear anything you’ve found helpful, no matter how small!) Let’s kick it off by meeting the man of the hour, yeah?
A Lil’ Introduction

There he is! My best friend, my cat’s favorite person, and the only man I’ve ever met who can sing Mariah Carey by heart and on-key. He is silly and fun, an intimidatingly good dancer (though he’ll never admit it), the most thoughtful listener, an incredible taco chef, and I’ve found that he’s so easy to just be with – I’m always appreciative of his patience, willingness to help, and even-keeled energy. SAY HI TO DENNIS, OK? (PS. You’ll hear a bit from him below. Add “great sport” and “willing to put himself out there” to the list!!!)
We started talking about moving in together in 2022, but gave ourselves the time to adhere to the common cohabitation wisdom – we’ve solved problems together; we’ve traveled together. We know how to discuss the tough stuff and we’ve seen each other through times of stress and grief. We’ve talked about chores, bills, and all the realities of living and working in the same 1,100 square feet. And unlike a lot of long-distance couples, we’ve been lucky enough to get in a lot of in-person time – we’ve spent weeks (sometimes months!) living together in our respective apartments over the past few years, so we have a realistic idea as to what life looks like with the other person. I feel ready and excited and I genuinely can’t wait for “my” space to become “our” space. IS IT JULY YET????
Let The Fun Begin

As a quick refresh, this is the current state of the apartment in question. Den is making a number of huge sacrifices to move into this place with me – he’s leaving his friends, his enormous (and very welcoming!) family, and he’ll be working some early bird hours to align with his coworkers on the East Coast – so I really care about making this home feel like it represents us. LA is my favorite city in the world and I’m so excited to experience all our neighborhood has to offer together, but I want Den to feel like he’s really in his home and not just a guest in mine, you know?
Which brings us back to today’s topic: HOW THE HECK DO YOU DESIGN A HOME WITH A PARTNER? Or, in my case: how the heck do you design a home with a partner when you’ve made some very loud, very specific, and very permanent pre-existing design decisions?

Because y’all – she is loud. As it stands, the apartment is currently filled to the brim with brass, and lucite, and animal print, and weird sculptures, and there’s obviously no lack of color or pattern. And while many of these elements will remain (you’ll see those all wallpapers in reveals this year, I promise!), I’m so excited for the changes to come – think more subdued styling, multiple WFH areas, an increased focus on comfort (hello, lounge-able sofa!), and a more relaxed, less precious feel.
Since we’re combing our households from across the country, Den’s currently downsizing. He’ll bring his essentials – books, records, art, cooking tools, clothing, guitars, etc. – but he’ll move into the apartment as-is, and my hope is that we’ll finish furnishing it together in a functional, beautiful way that we both love. (Avid readers may have clocked that my dining room, bedroom, and kitchen reveals have been delayed – now you know why! I didn’t want to invest in pieces that didn’t make sense for each of us, you know? It felt wasteful to only consider my taste when I knew that my life and home would be changing so soon!)
Learn Your Partner’s TastesI knew Dennis had good taste from the moment I stepped into his apartment. He had rugs! He had fun art (in frames, no less! Hanging on the wall, and some in unexpected places!). He had a well-styled drop zone next to the front door, charming blue campaign-style end tables, and a graphic floral tablecloth draped across his desk! I love the way his home feels – it’s cozy and warm and personal – and I’m beyond eager to bring that same energy to our combined space. (Can’t you tell?)
We started our cohabitation design journey by sharing some inspiration images, which feels like a safe place to start. Den and I exchanged DMs on Instagram, but you can also start a Pinterest board – whatever you prefer! And here’s where I have a confession to make: stylistically, I’ve hit the roommate jackpot. As you’re about to see, Den’s not afraid of color, texture, or interest. Oftentimes, deciding on a mutual aesthetic can be a fraught or confrontational process – I’ve witnessed it firsthand, as my friends have moved in with their partners! – but Dennis has an awesome (and compatible) eye, which makes combining our households MUCH easier. (If you’re about to live with a partner and your styles aren’t totally meshing, never fear! I have some tips for you below. :)) Enough blabbing from me – are you ready to see the rooms that’ll be inspiring our shared space?

Here’s how Den described his taste: “I like a lot to look at and a lot of eye-catching things. But in a chill way. I need a place where I can simultaneously turn up and turn down. So I guess it would ideally look lived in and not like a room with just the bare minimum in it. Ultimately, I need a cool place to watch Columbo.“
My take? I’M OBSESSED. I love the color blocking, the cohesive, corralled collections of items (the candles on the left; books on the right!), how each piece is perfectly scaled, and how comfortable each space feels. They’re rooms that you can just live in, you know? They feel homey and warm and cozy, which is the energy I hope to capture (fingers crossed).

I’ve been on a big primary color kick lately, so I adored these. I love the timeless, deeper-toned woods, the colorful sofas, the punchy hits of red and yellow, and the classic patterns brought in through the rug on the left and the striped blanket on the right. The aesthetics may differ a bit, but both rooms capture the same energy – it’s that homey feeling that I mentioned above!

Speaking of bright sofas…how good are these?! I love the composition of both spaces – a statement-making rug, a full bookshelf (with killer art styling, of course), beautiful lighting, a nice dose of greenery, and a lounge-worthy sofa in a cheery, happy hue.

Who needs Bridgerton when you have a boyfriend who DMs you interiors by Pierce & Ward on Instagram?! BIG SWOON. Den liked how comfortable this living room was, and I totally agree. It shares a lot of stylistic elements with the previous spaces, too – a personal gallery wall, thoughtful collections on display, classic wood tones, and some playful color blocking (albeit in a more tonal way). I also love the quirky, whimsical elements here like the tiny wooden chairs, the simple-but-special end table used to define a seating area, and the irregular wicker lighting.
When exchanging inspiration with your partner, carve out some time to understand the why – what draws them to each room? What elements do they like? Is there anything in the photo that they don’t like? Are they looking to capture a vibe, or are they specifically attached to certain styles of furniture or decor? If you listen to understand, you’ll be able to find those stylistic throughlines. Added bonus: hearing your partner talk about design is SUPER FUN. Our homes are so important to each of us and it’s so interesting to learn what others value in their space!
Build A Plan TogetherAs promised, I wanted to provide a few of the tips and tricks I’ve been keeping in mind as we prepare for this next chapter. That being said, I don’t know everything (yet, and it’s not looking like I’ll be able to learn it all in my next 60ish years on the planet), so if I’m missing anything, PLEASE drop a little note in the comments. I’d love to make this an even better resource using experience from people who have, you know, actually lived with someone

We officially kicked off the moving process five days ago (!!!) with these two big ol’ suitcases filled with Den’s belongings. (Borrowed from Brenda, of course. She’s the MVP and I am very grateful for her support!!!) We’re finalizing a few big pieces before he gets here – another dresser for the bedroom, some good office chairs, and maybe even a sectional – but more than anything, I’m just excited to hang out with my best friend every day. The spaces will come together in time and there’s no one else I’d rather design them with. But seriously, PLEASE DROP ME YOUR TIPS, ADVICE, OR WORDS OF WISDOM BELOW. I’d love to learn what worked for you!
Wish me luck!!!! I’ll keep you posted on the progress. xx

How This “Open-Nester” Decided Downsizing And Renting Was For Them – Lea Moved Out Of Her House And She Has TIPS

If you’ve followed along our moving journey you know by now that 2024 brought with it a lot of new challenges but also insight into our future or at least what we perceive our future to be given the breadcrumbs 2023 left us.

My husband was diagnosed with M.S. (Multiple Sclerosis) back in 1999 and thankfully his health has been fairly manageable with just a few bumps in the road. That was until, as life would have it, the day after we closed on our dream aka “forever home” in 2016. As his health continued to decline over the few years we lived there I thought and prayed to please let us get through our daughter’s college graduation plus one year. Well, we didn’t quite make it that “plus one year” but we got close. It was as good a time as any to say goodbye to the little house we called Creekwoodhill. Ahhhh…the memories we made there! It was so bittersweet to leave but don’t feel sad for us because this mom and dad shook the kiddos loose (Ok, not really) and moved further into the city, decided not to buy another car (since our son crashed it last year) and instead moved into a modern loft-style apartment within walking distance to local coffee shops and eateries. We are a $5 Uber ride into downtown or uptown and a plethora of places to shop and dine all around us. We’re enjoying late-night dinners, cocktails on the rooftop, and we love that we’re steps away from all the nature trails Remi’s (our dog) heart could desire. While some people are calling us empty-nesters, we’re referring to ourselves as “open-nesters”. It was important to us that with this lifestyle change both of our adult kids didn’t feel pushed or left out. So although we are downsizing to about half the square feet we had in our house, there will always be a place for them to return to.

So what were some of the key factors that led us to this journey besides my husband’s health?
Both of our kids are now in their mid-twenties. One was eagerly ready to fly the nest and the other, we suspect, will be right behind her in another year or two. And…to be honest, homeownership is a LOT of work, especially when that falls on one person (me). We decided we didn’t need 3000 sq. ft. with a large yard anymore and instead opted to venture into our second phase of life. AKA life without children at home with less home, less maintenance (or none), more living, more travel, and more financial freedom. We are learning to get by without a car, or at least for now, to see how far we can go without feeling the need to buy one. We are also working on rebranding my styling business (more, really soon!) and begin to align ourselves with our dream of living part-time in Minneapolis and part-time in L.A.

With our move, I learned a TON; I learned I could plan and be as well organized as I wanted to but in the end, there would be outliers that I didn’t factor that dang near brought me to my knees. I learned we wouldn’t walk away with as much financially as I had anticipated due to poor planning in the past but let me be clear. To anyone who is the sole income earner in their household, trying to also run a business, put a kid or two through college, and be a full-time caregiver to a lifelong partner whose health is deteriorating more and more every year I SEE you. There have been many days/nights I have cried myself to sleep, and my family has witnessed me have a full mental breakdown because the weight is just entirely too heavy to bear alone. Yet, anyone who is close enough to know the vulnerable me knows I can go from full-blown meltdown to stone-faced back to business in 3.2 seconds. Is it healthy? No. I’m sure it’s a coping mechanism I learned from the childhood trauma of licking my own wounds. Recently, I heard a quote that read something like I didn’t grow up with role models, instead, I grew up with people I didn’t want to be like. That hit home big time for me.
Moving on, I learned we don’t NEED a lot of things. Ha! I learned how to get rid of and let go of SO much STUFF. With our daughter moving into her first place, it was easy enough to split things like furnishings and kitchenware with her to get her going. My cousin and his wife had just purchased their first home so they came over and we loaded up most of the garage items such as the lawn mower, snowblower, tools, etc. You know, all of the things a new homeowner needs that they don’t know they need yet.
Some of my styling inventory went to one of the stylists on my team and copious amounts of things went to the thrift store. I think I counted 11 SUV truckloads. My daughter took all of the paint, oil, chemicals, etc. and brought them to a city drop-off site. What remained, I thought, was a piece of cake.

I called out to friends and family 60 days in advance for boxes, and yes ma’am, they came through! Having that off my task list, I ordered through Amazon packing tape, bubble wrap, newsprint, mattress protector bags, moving bags, and vacuum seal bags. And, of course, with Prime delivering straight to our doorstep that meant less running around for me to do. Additionally, I purchased 7 of these medium-sized bins to hold all of my books because if you’ve ever moved books before you know just how heavy they become and those cardboard moving boxes were not going to do the trick. If you are ever looking to move your coffee table hardcover book collection, this is the bin for you, it’s wide enough on the bottom to hold two stacks, which is also all you need because they get HEAVY. I also bought a couple of these large storage bins because paperbacks could fit easily in those. With picking up the bins, I utilized Target Drive Up which is another moving task/errand hack I love. Listen, I was coming prepared and would make this move the easiest ever! I hired professional movers (we used local Two Men and a Truck) to also make this move easier for me. If you’re an MN reader, I highly recommend them (we actually utilized 4 men and a truck and it was perfect for our household size. Also to get ahead of the game, we asked for a move-in date 2 weeks before our actual move-out/closing (on the house) date so that we could off-load things over there to make the logistical part of the move easier. Funny story! Our new place is in an old commercial building that was renovated for apartments. But when the previous business operated there, my parents both worked and met IN MY BUILDING waaaay back in the early 70s. Pretty cool, right?! Ok, back to the move. I arranged for our daughter to come pick Remi up so she could spend 2 nights with her big sis so that she would not feel the stress/anxiety of the move.
At this point, I’m feeling amazing and living my Project Manager era to the fullest!!!
Next, I lined up friends and family for a half day (aka Move Day Number 1) to move all of the packed boxes that mainly contained all of my fragile items, lamps, art, etc. things that I just couldn’t bear if the movers broke vs. myself breaking them. The other half of the day was bringing things to our storage unit that we would deal with another day because there was nothing we needed/used (mostly, boxes of family photos, things from my dad (who passed away 3 years ago, etc. you catch the drift). That means, all that was left to do was move the furniture and those heavy totes full of books. Move Day Number 2 came and went easy peasy and UNDER budget folks! Yes, I’ll take that win! Again, flying my Project Manager flag LOUD. The movers re-assembled our beds and moved all furniture and rugs into place. At this point, EVERYTHING was moved into the apartment and I was feeling great! I started unpacking everything and had our new place semi-put together in just a couple of hours. Our first night, and speaking of myself, I slept like a baby. Morning came and it was time to go back to the house to clean before the new homeowners took occupancy. Side note: Pack a tote of cleaning supplies and trash bags just for move-out day or better yet, hire a move-out clean with a cleaning service.

Ok…This, my friends, is where Lea lost her ish. This is what I didn’t foresee. While I was busy moving an entire household, I failed to check on my husband’s progress with clearing out the garage after all of the big stuff was off-loaded to my cousins and a few others. This is by far my fault, which likely made me more mad at myself but of course, in the moment I blamed him and probably went in extra, extra hard because you know, it’s the easy thing to do when you are STRESSED. Afterward, I called my realtor and completely bawled my eyes out (thank you, Kathy).
The garage was full of loads and loads of 7+ years of miscellaneous ahem…THINGS. At this point, we had 2 hours to vacate. Our next-door neighbors turned lifelong friends heard my desperation or psychotic meltdown, whichever story you want to believe, and came and helped me take 11 lawn-sized trash bags out as well as other large left-over building material scraps, remnants of who knows what. We were out with 5 minutes to spare.

Whew! So that is how our move and process went. I hope you check in to hear how we came out on the other side of our move and how we’re adjusting to a smaller space, fewer rooms while still working from home. Make It Work: 3 Color Palettes To Try If You Have Grey Wood Or Vinyl Flooring

I’m going to be honest with you, EHD readers. I’ve written and rewritten this intro three times now. “But this is a piece on…colors…and grey wood floors?” you may be thinking, as certainly, a post on flooring can’t possibly cause this seasoned writer to start, delete, start, delete, and start an introduction. Here’s the thing, though: No matter how hard I try, I’m finding it difficult not to say something anyone would take offense to. The reality is, I do not like grey wood or vinyl flooring and every time I see them newly installed, I wince a little bit. These grey floors must have the same marketing team as cauliflower and cottage cheese, because man, are they ubiquitous.
But you know what? That’s fine. Maybe you don’t like it, either. Or maybe you do. That’s the beauty of design…it’s mostly subjective (with a few exceptions because good design is good design, no objection). Regardless of my thoughts on the silvery finish, though, I’m here to help make it work for anyone who is decorating around it in their homes and maybe struggling to get it right.
I think the reason it can be so tricky is because, to my knowledge, grey wood doesn’t exist naturally—it only comes to be by getting exposed to UV rays and/or salt water. IMHO, that’s why it doesn’t blend in with ease. I liken it to adding a banana to a smoothie: it’s hard to hide it. No matter what you add to that blender, you can’t really mask the banana, just like no matter what you add to a room, you can’t really mask the unnatural qualities of grey floors. So, let’s not mask them. I hope you like banana, because I worked through three different concepts that make those floors shine, whether you inherited them in a home purchase or rental, or you picked them out yourself during a renovation.
But first: For any readers that happen to be sticklers on the spelling of this neutral hue (you know you’re out there), I just want to quickly say I’m pro “gray” but Google prefers “grey” so for the sake of satisfying the search engine Gods and helping people searching for this type of post, we shall stick with the “e” version for this article.
Now that that’s clear, let’s go, starting with some guidelines.
3 Rules For Designing Around Grey Wood Flooring#1: When it comes to pairing other wood tones with grey wood and vinyl flooring, match the undertones (cool, warm).
#2: If your floors have heavy graining or lots of color variation, keep other wood grains subtle or separated by a rug or by distance (meaning, wood decor up on a shelf or on other furnishings).
#3: Add contrast. Add contrast. Add contrast. So often, I see homes that pair grey flooring with grey walls and grey furniture and grey decor. Can we stop designing in grayscale, please? We need color in our lives, people, even if those colors are cream and ivory and black and walnut and leather.
I wasn’t able to pull any photos from our EHD archive that showcased grey wood floors, but I was able to pull rooms with grey floors (sans wood), and one that was borderline (keep reading).
The two photos directly below this paragraph are the same house, but due to lighting conditions and maybe even the editing of the photo initially, the concrete floors look very different. But both of them are grey, so for today’s illustrative purposes, let’s just focus on that.

This room is a great example of how to make cool grey floors not end up feeling sterile. The curtains and rug are fairly monotone, but the rest of the furnishings add color and warmth through different wood tones and lived-in upholstery. The rug visually separates the floor tones and the furniture tones; not a huge deal with concrete floors, but when grey wood or vinyl is involved, it can be a bit more jarring to have those tones on top of each other without a buffer.

These floors look so much warmer than the other ones, but the principles here are still the same: add contrast, warm materials and finishes, and use the magical powers of a rug.

Alright so, this one is a stretch, but the floors in Emily’s old basement in LA had a bit of a weathered look in this image, so I…

…Photoshopped them to be grey to see how they’d look for the purpose of this post. I think it works, don’t you? As I established in our rules above, floors with more noticeable graining can’t handle other things with noticeable graining. Here, the majority of the larger pieces are metal (bed, lighting), and the bench, while it does have a visible grain, is separated by a rug.

Clockwise from top left: Influence Waterproof Vinyl Plank Flooring | Canterbury Gray Oak Wire Brushed Engineered Hardwood | Panorama 10mm Waterproof Laminate Flooring | Hard Gray Wood Plank Porcelain Tile | Silverton Oak 8 mm T x 7.5 in. W Water Resistant Laminate Wood Flooring | 2mm Fitzgerald Oak Waterproof Glue-Down Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring
Just like brown and beige toned woods, grey wood, vinyl and tile flooring run the gamut. Some have heavy graining, some more subtle. Some have a ton of color variety, others more monochrome. There’s light, dark, warm, cool, and somewhere in-between greys. And the subtleties in each of those can drastically change how they’ll look with other furnishings, especially wood tones and wall color.
Before diving into the design concepts I put together, I have one more caveat, because it wouldn’t be an article by me if it didn’t have stipulations. Finding inspiration photos on the internet of rooms I felt were worthy of sharing here that also happened to have grey wood floors were not readily available. I’m sure I could find them had I had weeks or months to gather, but similar to the above, I’m working from spaces with grey flooring to help tell a color story, even if they’re tile or concrete or some other material.
I really like where a lot of these landed, and I hope you do, too. For the moodboards I put together, I didn’t really have a room in mind. It should be used more generally for vibe, colors, materials and such. That way, it could apply to most spaces, even kitchens if you can stretch your mind a little. Let’s take a look:
If your floors have cool undertones: Add white, warmth and colors with depthView this post on InstagramA post shared by Carley Page Summers (@carlaypage)
Cool-toned grey floors felt the trickiest to me, so I’m starting there. It was difficult to find rooms that felt well-rounded, interesting and like a place I wanted to be in. That is until I found Carlay Page‘s space. It is swoon-worthy in its simplicity. Yes, the marble checkerboard floors are a far cry from vinyl planks, but if you squint, it does the job. The cool grey works so well with the creamy white on the walls, the green and ochre vintage rug and, of course, the dusty French blue built-in.
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Jenni Yolo | I SPY DIY (@ispydiy)
Jenni Yolo of I Spy DIY used black cabinetry and dark stained wood elements such as the door to add both contrast and warmth to the grey herringbone tile floors. The color variations on these floors waffle between neutral and cool, and that strategy really makes these feel welcoming, quiet and classic.

1. Juliet Floral Wallpaper | 2. Benjamin Moore Distant Gray | 3. Fern Storage Cabinet | 4. Kate Hand-Knotted Wool Rug | 5. Crissey Sconce | 6. SIN Bacchus Bookends Set | 7. Oblong Distressed Wood Decor Bowl Black – Hearth & Hand with Magnolia | 8. Custom Emery Linen Blackout Curtain – Mineral Blue
I pulled a lot of inspiration from that first image by Carlay Page for this mood board. The Anthropologie armoire adds both a cool blue similar to the built-in cabinet in that photo, but also brings in a neutral wood to add variety to the flooring. I picked a warm, greyish white paint that wouldn’t feel overly stark, and the wallpaper is deeply saturated in case you want to go that route, instead. The curtains are a slate blue that will coordinate nicely without bringing in too much visual impact, while the rug adds a lot of warmth and depth while still having some cool colored elements on it to echo the floors. Accessories are kept neutral in black (every room needs black!), white and brass.
If your floors have warm undertones: Introduce deeper wood tones and saturated colorView this post on InstagramA post shared by WHITTNEY PARKINSON DESIGN (@whittneyparkinson)
Warm wood is far easier to work around because it’s closer to the floor of natural wood. I liked a warm grey floor most with other rich colors, some creamy neutrals and deep wood tones, like the set of built-in drawers in Whittney Parkinson’s mudroom above (I’m only referencing the first photo in that carousel, by the way). The little dots of orangey red in the wallpaper balance the coolness of the moody, dusty blue on the molding and the low bench area, which I think is important to create balance.
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Vaughan Design & Development (@vaughan_d_d)
This is a bit of a different approach (shared by Vaughn_d_d), which reads more modern. There aren’t a lot of other wood tones here besides the barstools, but the creamy range, Zellige tile and pinstripe curtains bring out the beige of the concrete floors. Sometimes, you have to use a thing’s subtle quality in other areas to make it more apparent. And notice how they opted for a warm green with yellow undertones, rather than a cool-toned green here, which I think creates a harmonious color palette rather than something with too many opposing forces.

1. Cat Cow Wallpaper in Olive/Taupe | 2. Saged by Backdrop | 3. Hattie Cabinet | 4. Mallory Area Rug | 5. Rainier Brass Conical Wall Sconce Light | 6. Tuscan Farmhouse Distressed Ceramic Pitcher – 8.5″ | 7. Virgal Handmade Decorative Box | 8. Cruz Ticking Stripes Taupe/Ivory Drapery
Somehow, I ended up with a bit of a dramatic moodboard, but it’s pretty reminiscent of that kitchen, depending on how it’s implemented. A warm grey floor works really well with dark, neutral wood stains, like that Arhaus armoire. Just like they did in the kitchen, I pulled curtains in a taupe pinstripe for cohesion, but then brought in the color via a dramatic rust and cream rug, and a combo of an olive paint and swirling green Rebecca Atwood wallpaper. I love an aged, burnished brass as the metal finish here, but an oil-rubbed bronze or even black would also work.
If you like to keep things neutral: Introduce enough contrastNot everyone is as comfortable with color as I am, so for all the neutral-loving readers out there, this one is for you. And just like in the rules I set above, this comes with a rule that echoes #1: figure out your undertone and work from that. You don’t want a cool grey floor paired with anything that veers too yellow. Your wall color, even if cream, should be a taupe cream that veers a bit more grey. If your floors are on the warmer side of the temperature spectrum, going with anything too cool isn’t going to feel right. Look for neutrals closer to beige. Think oyster over glacier.
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Cecilie Kovsted Jønsson (@interiorunivers)
This dining space (with a peek into an office) by Cecilie Kovsted Jønsson does a great job of using a neutral grey floor as the foundation for a mostly neutral room. Black chairs add a lot of needed contrast, a warm wood table with warm rush seats pair nicely with a creamy backdrop via the paint color (I love the mushroom-y color on the shelves in the back with these floors).

1. Raphael Wallpaper by Scalamandre | 2. Ritual Unions by Backdrop | 3. Blake Light Brown Teak and Rattan 2-Door Storage Cabinet | 4. Agen Wool Grid Ivory Area Rug | 5. Ansel Double Sconce With Shade | 6. Uma Burl Wood Rectangular Tray | 7. Flounce Black Teak Decorative Bowl | 8. Half Price Drapes Faux Linen Room Darkening Curtains
Layering neutrals is not something I do often since I feel more at home in a cacophony of visual color but I do like the way this one turned out. Quiet, soft but textural. I almost LIKE the floor here, tbh, with these selections. It was crucial to bring in a honey-finished cabinet, tbh, for a bit of a glow and balance to the grey colorwash happening between the floor, rug, curtains and paint color. But all of those elements are varied just enough (and the rug has a subtle pattern, while the linen of the panels also adds texture), so it still has movement rather than being one-note. I pulled the same wallpaper Emily has in her foyer for a hushed, just-barely-there pattern that still carries a good amount of impact in this color palette. And brass is a must for me here. I love a chrome or polished nickel metal lately, but here, it plays well with the warm armoire wood and the burlwood tray. And finally, I threw in a black teak bowl because, again, every room needs the gravitas of black somewhere, even if just in a small decor moment.
You guys, we’ve reached the end. TBH, this post loomed over me for a while. I didn’t have an idea in my head of how I would tackle it when Jess first suggested it to me weeks ago. “How on earth am I going to make grey floors look good enough to be in my own home?” I’d ask myself. But now looking back, I’m kind of into it! My how my tune has changed, huh? Sometimes, all it takes to fall in love with something (okay, that’s too far but fall in somewhat-like) is stopping, digging around for inspiration, stretching one’s mind, and thinking through options with some basic design principles we already know.
I hope this was helpful to some of you out there, and if it wasn’t, I hope it was at least entertaining. I’ll see you around these parts next time.
Your friend in making it work,
Arlyn

The Link Up: Em’s New And Easy Glowy Makeup Hack, Jess’s “Good For Any Occasion” Dress, And A Cookbook About Dips (Just In Time For Dip Season!)

We are all now OFFICIALLY, officially back because Jess needed until Monday to get her full dose of Mexico:) To be honest, we’re relieved she even came back at all. It was MAGICAL so we also would have understood if she didn’t:) Anyway, it’s good to be home and back at it (especially with this long weekend to ease us back in). Let’s get to these links!
This week’s house tour is just pure color and design inspiration from the one and only Flack Studio. We won’t say more because you just have to go see:) Go check it out here!
From Emily: I caved and was HIGHLY influenced by Ballerina Farm (like her or not, she can really sell some makeup to look so naturally beautiful) and I bought the OGEE Face Stick Collection. I put it on for a shoot the other day and Kaitlin said “Well look at you, doing your own makeup” because it looked really good! It’s similar to the Merit kit so if you have that you don’t need both, but it’s essentially a bronzing stick, a blush stick, and a highlighter. I’ll demo it on stories for those who are interested. I’m a big fan because it’s glowy, subtle, and very easy to apply. It’s expensive, but isn’t all good organic anything these days? Anyway, watch the demos and try not to buy this.

Jean Jacket | Bandana (similar) | Striped Shirt | Jean Shorts | Flats
Also From Emily: If you are into an oversized, long utility jacket this denim number from Madewell made the cut this year. It’s roomy (I’m wearing a small), has huge pockets, and lots of detail. Kaitlin and Gretch both wanted it after we shot this. I feel like I could have styled it better, actually). Anyway, for summer I like layers that aren’t too tailored or stuffy and this is so casual I think it can go over most summer dresses or short little shorty numbers.
From Jess: As I said in our Mexico fashion post, I did very well at & Other Stories in prep for our retreat which was a huge surprise. And while I really loved the yellow dress you saw, this one-shoulder brown linen beauty was the true get! I love the twist detail on the shoulder strap, the deep chocolate color, and the casualness of the linen fabric. I’ve already worn it to a baby shower, while in Mexico…twice, and will be dressing it up for a wedding I’m going to in two weeks. It can work for so many occasions and it’s impossible to not feel cool in. And while the model on the site is gorgeous, the dress is so much prettier on and in person. I don’t think I would have bought it if I had only seen it online. Just an FYI if you don’t get why I’m so obsessed with it:)
From Caitlin: From Caitlin: OMG. I don’t know who is in charge of the pattern-making at Gap right now, but I NEED THEM TO STAY WORKING THERE FOREVER. A few weeks ago, I tried on this $34 linen-blend slip dress. What I expected: the dress would barely reach over the top half of my body – straining around the boob area, of course – before getting stuck at the top of my butt, unable to be pulled any further. (As is the case with ::checks notes:: literally every slip dress I’ve ever tried.) So imagine my surprise when this little number just DRAPED over every bit, without clinging anywhere! INSTANT PURCHASE. I grabbed it in a large (I’m normally an XL gal, for the record) and my only complaint is that it’s way longer on me than the model – it’s basically to my knees, and I’m 5’8″! It comes in 4 colors and 2 patterns (I got the red, spicy!) and Y’ALL GOTTA HURRY TO THE GAP, because it’s getting goooooood again. It’s still the 90s in there – so many great essentials, made from high-quality materials, and at affordable prices! (PS. If you want to see how it falls on the plus model, she’s pictured in the black and black floral!)
From Mallory: I dressed up all fancy the other day but realized (very late) that I needed a good fancy clutch to go along with my outfit so I snagged THIS baddie from Amazon (since I only had 2 days before the event lol) and I could not believe how cute it was in person!! The quality is also very solid considering it’s $25 for the bag. If you’re needed a fancy bag this is the guy for you!!
From Gretchen: Still reminiscing on our incredible retreat to Mexico. So many laughs, good eats, and great outfits. I shopped ’til I dropped for this trip and found some great pieces that I still need to share. A lot of linen sets which I’ve already raved about plenty, but a few fun “night-out” outfits too, including this stunning dress from Abercrombie. I bought it in the green (which sadly seems to be nearly sold out!) but they have a couple colorways that are just as cute. What I love most about it is the fit–how it drapes, the ring in the middle that creates a nice deep V, and it ties in the back making it adjustable for the “girls”. Just an easy, breezy vacay dress that feels fancy enough for cocktails.
From Arlyn: I love cookbooks. I love dips. So, it should come as no surprise that I would love the idea of a cookbook ABOUT dips. I haven’t actually gotten one for this year, but I’ve heard a lot of buzz from friends and strangers alike on the internet about this one. It’s quirky, fun and helpful, especially as we enter dip season. (What, no one told you summer was dip season? It is. Let’s celebrate and all get this cookbook, then host a bring-your-own-dip night. Who’s in?)
Thanks for hanging with us and we hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow (whether or not you have to work:)). See ya tomorrow!

5 Good Jean Shorts I’ll Be Wearing This Summer That Aren’t Levi’s:)

As a shorts lover, my season is just beginning. Time to give my spray tan, thighs, knees, and ankles their moment – the attention they deserve as the all-important bottom half of my bod. Some of my favorite Levi’s were either too small now or had so many holes that it felt a little questionable, so I bought a few more to show you. I still like to keep it casual with shorts most of the summer, but some of these are a bit more tailored while others are more slouchy. None of them are particularly tight mostly because I like to be comfortable. While I know that longer shorts are more on trend right now (and capris are making a comeback!!!!) I still like the medium to short on me, but with a little bit of width (not too huggy on the thighs). If you want to know my unpopular opinion re the capri comeback, I AM LIKE THE ONLY PERSON EXCITED!!! I’m so sick of baggy jeans being trendy, I miss my wonderful skinny jeans and while I agree that some capris look bad, I’ve seen a few that I was very excited by. So stay tuned for that big comeback (I’m assuming more for 2025, people are NOT ready yet and most of the major brands aren’t pumping out capris yet). Meanwhile, I present to you a bunch of cute jean shorts that I’m loving.

Puff-Sleeve Top | Emmett Patch Pocket Short | Greta Ballet Flat
These guys from Madewell have front pockets that I think are flattering and feel more tailored. They flare out a bit, and without any holes they feel pulled together and more current. I really like the medium to dark wash too which isn’t my typical go-to but I’m into it.

OGC Short (no longer available in denim) | Cable-Stitch Cardigan | Mules | Scarf (similar)
These are my current favorites for all occasions, but they are sold out in denim now!!! I also bought them in the chino version which is still available. They have elastic on the back, but flat on the front. I’m sorry to tease you – but the cut is good enough and they are so affordable so def grab them in the chino version if you like.

OGC Short (no longer available in denim) | Cable-Stitch Cardigan | Mules | Scarf (similar)
I LOVE that new cardigan for summer. I brought it on my long weekend to Arrowhead because it layers so well over so many clothes. And that is my new bandana move/styling trick should you be wondering… Still my favorite mules for when I want to be comfortable, have a little heel, and yet not make a foot statement.

Step-Hem Shorts | Resort Shirt | Mules | Woven Tote
These are my second favorite – these jeans shorts are really cute, a great light wash, comfortable, and have a little bit of fraying at the bottom. But overall super easy to wear.

Step-Hem Shorts | Cable-Stitch Cardigan | Greta Ballet Flat | Scarf (similar) | Woven Tote
I wore them for a social partnership with Madewell so as you can see I styled them a few different ways. The shorts are a little longer in the back which I like. Just solid go-to’s for me (and on a sale for mem day).

Palmer Shorts | Rugby Tee | Mules | Scarf (similar)
Another pair that has awesome huge front pockets (which I find really fun) and a cute rolled cuff. See that little tie-up (?) piece?! Such a great but small detail that makes these feel a little extra special. But what I also really love is that they are midrise and a little slouchy. My favorite combo.

Palmer Shorts | Rugby Tee | Mules | Scarf (similar)
These are SOLID and I’m going to wear them all summer.

Harlow Jean Short | Stripe Shirt | Black Bag (old) | Greta Ballet Flat
Lastly, a pleated little version that feels more tailored and sweet. I’m wearing a 27 here but want to size up as they cut in a bit, so keep that in mind (fits more on your waist, than on your hips). But they are super cute.

Harlow Jean Short | Stripe Shirt | Black Bag (old) | Greta Ballet Flat
Also, I’m really loving those woven ballet flats (like sandals but as flats, because they have holes so they are super airy). And that dropped shoulder top is a great summer weight knit (heavier than a T-shirt but not sweater materials).
Happy jean short season

Some Of My Favorite Outdoor Decor Pieces In Case Your Outdoor Space Could Use A Little Love

We just revealed our back porch, but we didn’t talk much about more of the decorating essentials that I really like (both for years and brand new to me). I’m talking outdoor lighting (which I’m VERY big on) and all the littler stuff that makes it look pulled together and therefore easier to enjoy. This is our first real summer here with the yard done (it was finished in August last year but still growing in) and we have so many party plans Let’s go.

This is the only real shot of the Target lantern that I love (that to be fair is a knock-off of an excellent Tala lamp that comes in a lot of beautiful colors). This lamp is rechargeable and dimmable and for $30 it’s excellent (I also have a Tala lamp which is 10x times the price but really pretty). All the furniture is Article, FYI, and wonderful (and if you didn’t hear my schpeal the other day it generally arrives quickly and is high-end, but more affordable since it’s direct to consumer).

Y’all those acrylic glasses from Target ($3 each) are SOLID. They look like glass, they come in really pretty colors, and are great year-round kid cups. They also have stemmed glasses, but honestly, we RARELY use a stem glass in our house. I hate giving people bad plastic and these feel way more elevated. Those candleholders are so cute and I’ve had them forever (and I’m on the hunt for dripless taper candles that aren’t crazy colors). Here are practically identical ones for only $16 each!

The pillows are from Target and World Market (and that awesome planter on the table is also from World Market and it has a base layer to it that catches water which I appreciate). And shout out to those string lights – they are shatter-resistant, super long, and I love that here they are white so that they aren’t too busy on the ceiling (and they are a really nice warm glow, FYI). We attached them just with tiny little nails and it was super easy.
Here are some other pieces I really love and make such a pretty impact:
Lanterns

Terra Cotta Planters | Lanterns | Candles | Watering Can
Ok, these lanterns are so pretty and simple, but they aren’t the type that you want to carry around too much (because the metal is thin with so much glass they aren’t crazy durable). I love them, but if you need something with a lot of wear and tear they might not be for you.

Copper Mugs | Wood Serving Board (similar) | Terra Cotta Planter | Lanterns | Candles
I bought the candles at Pottery Barn and sadly one just melted into the brick (whoops) but they were great for the year (we never lighted them TBH).
Striped Pillows

For those of you who missed it, this is our kitchen patio that has this furniture year-round, and it’s lovely. We take off the cushions of course, but the wood and metal are durable and casual. But when they are out I love the pop of pattern these pillows give so much. So easy and so visually fun.

Black & White Lumbar Pillow | Striped Bolster
We recently styled a full story at the ARCIFORM bay house and bought a few great pieces (including that lumbar pillow which now lives in our chaise lounges by our Soake pool).

Broken Stripe Lumbar Pillow | Navy & White Ruffled Pillow | Jute Scallop Lumbar Pillow | Outdoor Blanket
More cute things – a fringed umbrella (from Home Depot!), lots of striped pillows (the options are endless and so fun!), and beautiful chaise lounge chairs (from Neighbor, which you can also buy at AllModern). The swing is also so good

Green Side Table | Umbrellas | Ceramic Side Table
An easy way to make an outdoor space a little cooler and fun is by adding a sculptural stool. They are great side tables, can be extra seating, and even be a fun plant holder. I love this new green/blue one I just got from Anthro because it add a fresh and modern feel. Then the white one is still very awesome and is also modern by adds a ton of texture.
A Few Entertaining Things I Love

Metal Screen Food Dome | Extra Large Ivory Natural Fiber Mesh Outdoor Food Cover

Glass Drink Dispenser | Plastic Redington Beverage Pitcher
There are a few things that I want to call out that I think are essential for entertaining but we haven’t shot yet – food covers to keep the flies away. We use these ALL THE TIME and guests are always grateful and surprised by them. I have this one from Target and then a few of these from World Market, but the smaller versions (the Target one is big enough to fit over a small pizza or a huge salad bowl, and the World Market ones look great for large/long cheese boards but I bought the ones that are a bit too small to be that functional). I also really love/need big drink dispensers for kids and I have this one from Target. The main thing that we are missing is a big lucite/plastic pitcher for water or juice that isn’t hideous. I might cave and buy this one, but if anyone finds a really cute one that isn’t $100 let me know. Ok, I’ve just convinced myself that I need to do a shoot where I show you all of my favorite outdoor entertaining essentials (I have some awesome melamine platters that even Brian “loves” which is shocking LOL). Coming right up!

We Designed Our Back Porch For Peak Summer Enjoyment… Here’s How She Looks

It’s backyard/porch/deck glow-up season and I’m extremely pleased to write this post from our new dining set on our back porch – currently the only shady part of this yard during the time of year when Portland does this thing mind boggling dance of winter/summer in a week – the 85-degree heat creating whiplash and all of a sudden we are buying fast and cheap outdoor furniture in a desperate attempt to sit down outside NOW). Before you do that, read this post and (spoiler) buy from Article which will get to you almost as fast with 10 times the quality and style (IMHO).
Our Back Porch Summer 2023
Last summer we had bigger fish to fry (design-wise) and didn’t spend one second on this porch – only walking across it to get to the backyard. Brian thought this was because it was too hot to sit here in the afternoon, I (rightly) responded that perhaps because there was nowhere to sit so OF COURSE we weren’t going to hang here. Now he’s right – in July and August it boils here from 4 pm -8 pm, but the rest of the day and year it’s the most beautiful view.
Turns out during the spring (recently) when we had like 4 small events at our house (school fundraiser prep) all the people gathered up here because (HELLO) that is where the food and drinks were on card tables. It was a real “if you build it they will come” moment (if you don’t know that reference THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE IT MEANS YOU ARE YOUNG AND READING A BLOG INSTEAD OF TIKTOK SO I WANT TO SQUEEZE YOU IN THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION!!! Now go watch Field of Dreams and develop a lifelong crush for Kevin Costner like the rest of us :))
(Dare I Say) Summer 2024

Within two weeks this was done – with huge thanks to Article which once again has great everything, so fast, with excellent quality and service. I pulled together a plan that felt right with the dimensions, perfect for our usage needs, and then filled it out with plants and accessories. Here’s a little video tour of the space (just wait for the ad to play!)

Brian and I also debated about how to use the space and ultimately he was more right (I say “more” because I still think that my plan could work, too but we went with his ideas and it’s awesome). We put a dining set on the shadiest part of the porch (blocked by the rest of the house) and a seating area by the sunroom.

Loveseat | Side Table | Black and White Planter (unavailable) | Black Floor Planter | Portable Lantern | Coffee Table | Pouf | Rattan Chair | Throw Blanket
I needed a pretty narrow and shallow sofa so this loveseat was perfect (and I liked how the black tied in with the lighting and the black stair banister). I really really wanted one of their wicker lounge chairs (because they look cool) and y’all, I’m VERY pleased to tell you that it is very comfortable (i.e. not too low or hard to get in/out of and is really supportive). I matched the coffee table to the side table (because I’m a lady of cohesion) and added a flexible pouf (should that be my band name?).

Green Pillow | Clay Lumbar Pillow | Ribbed White Planter | Black Tray

Y’all, that is one of my favorite shots of the house thus far. Shout out to ARCIFORM for executing the prettiest back porch ever. And yes, we angle furniture and plants differently based on the shot so that chair moved a bit (we actually have two that fit in real life, but looked crowded in photos).
The Dining Room Side
The porch is not super deep (8′) so we couldn’t have a 4′ table without it feeling crowded. So I ordered this table and chairs to fit nicely in that nook.

Full disclosure the chairs fit with the table perfectly FOR US, but if you have more space I think the chairs are better scaled for a larger table (we just needed a smaller table and I wanted the wicker chairs to tie in with the lounge chair (plus the dining chairs are so comfortable).

Dining Table | Dining Chair | Blanket
Speaking of dining chairs: All-weather wicker FTW. All our 1970s Floridian grandmas would have been so delighted that the wicker of 2024 is so durable (no need for just the sunroom ladies). So modern and cool too. That dining table has some really lovely rounded edges that complement the chair arms. That solid teak top is also going to weather really beautifully out here. Also let’s give some cheers for that jasmine trying to climb and grow on our railing – hopefully by next summer it will be covering the railing and not attracting the bees that Brian is fearful of.

It might be hard to see but we added white cafe string lights that are shatter-resistant, 50′ long and so affordable. At night they give the perfect soft glow (not too cold or bright) and Gretchen and I strung them every third beam which doesn’t look like a lot in the photos but in person, it’s perfect (and more would have been too bright at night).

A huge thanks to Article for making such comfortable, high-quality, well-priced, stylish, and fast furniture. Yes, of course, we are partnering on this porch, but I’m always so impressed with what we receive and the speed at which it arrives. Their outdoor collection is always good but this year’s offerings are incredible from pops of color to small space solutions and even decor. If you have the budget to do white-glove service they will put everything together and take the boxes away within (seemingly) an hour. Truly a great experience – both purchasing and hanging out all summer on our porch. Now don’t let the rains return!!!!!!

Our New Favorite Place To Put Tile In A Kitchen…Can You Guess Where It Is??

It’s pretty exciting to get not only one but TWO incredible reveals from EHD favorite, Kirsten Blazek. The woman just can’t miss in our eyes. So in case you missed this moody office/bathroom trust me and go look at it now. If you’ve already had the pleasure of pouring over those photos then you know this kitchen both lives in the same style world (MCM, organic, modern) but is the lighter brighter version. Ready to get into the details? Let’s start with maybe our favorite:

Do you see those green tiles under the custom banquette?? What a simple yet impactful detail that I feel could be relatively DIYable if you or someone you know is a little handy.
Also what a stunning shot. Kirsten created a truly airy yet richly textured space. But then again that’s kinda what she does best.

Those tiles add dimension so that your eye has a little break from all of the wood in the space and they also bounce the light around. I love that she chose a green patterned fabric (peep those mini buttons!). Cohesive but not even a little boring:)

Now let’s talk about the lighting choices. Typically we recommend switching up light fixture shapes if you have more than one area that requires lighting in one space. But since there are only these two spots, I LOVE how she chose different pendants in the same shape but in two different materials and sizes – both in an MCM style. So beautiful and a great contrast to all of the straight lines.

Speaking of straight lines, we need to talk about this island immediately.

First off, modern slat detailing is something I have loved for a long time…when it’s done right, and this is absolutely done right. And the way that this island wraps around that corner post creating more counter space makes it look so intentional and like it’s always been there.

But what really feels special is that it’s footed like a piece of moveable furniture. Now this isn’t a new idea and is very popular with the more traditional modern style, farmhouse vibe (like Emily’s vintage island), and especially the eclectic English style. But when it comes to more modern spaces, like this one, it’s less common and that should clearly change! Look at how amazing this looks and makes the whole space feel lighter.
And in a very “tell me you’re in you’re in your 30s without telling me you’re in your 30s “…the ease at which you could vacuum under that island does things to me. Unprompted, my cousin had the same reaction:)

Oh, another stunning view! This side really highlights not only the really pretty mix of old and new wood between the ceiling and the cabinetry/island but also the mix of wood grain orientation. The grain on the cabinets is going horizontal while the slats on the island are vertical. That’s what I call “secret visual interest”. It’s also why you hire a designer:)
Oh, and notice the dark floor tiles. I love how the ceiling wood and the floors are darker and anchor the space, letting the rest of the lighter elements really shine.

Let’s now talk about this backsplash tile. Kirsten has used this style of tile before in this incredible renovation and I can see why she wanted to use it again. It’s a stunning ceramic tile with a lot of visual dimension in an MCM pattern. But since it’s in a more neutral color, it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Also, the thinner countertop is so sleek and that midtone color goes beautifully with the backsplash tile.

Lastly, let’s chat about those display boxes. First of all, I love them. The homeowner might use them for actual dishware or glassware but there seems to be a good amount of storage between the lowers and island (I assume the wall of cabinets is the fridge/freezer and pantry storage). I think having at least half of them be used for pretty decor creates some visual versatility. Also, I love that the decor is on those lower boxes versus on top of the cabinets. While the “above the cabinet” space, and how to address it is controversial, I love that it’s left unstyled intentionally. There is so much light with all of those windows that leaving negative space helps make everything feel light and airy.
Thank you, Kirsten, for sharing another space with us, GO BUY her wonderful new book, A 1000 X Better: A Rebel by Design, and if any of you decide to tile the base for your banquette, let us know!
Love you, mean it.
