The UPDATE You’ve Been Waiting For! More Than Madewell: 17 Similar Brands To Shop For Comfortable, Stylish, Wear-Everyday Pieces

What’s that thing called where the clock strikes midnight, you turn 30, and suddenly you’re like, “uh, where am I supposed to shop now?” If you’re like me, or Em, or literally anyone who has ever worked at EHD the answer has probably been “Madewell” – but what happens if you want to expand your options a bit?
THAT’S WHERE I COME IN, PAL! Today, I’m introducing you to 17 tried-and-true retailers at different price points who capture that same cool, effortless, Madewell aesthetic that we all know and love. Each brand is labeled with their available sizing – I’m recommending some businesses that carry sizes through 4X! – and I’ve also noted the price points (from $ to $$$$, to avoid any “Say Yes to the Dress” syndrome where you fall in love with something that’s not currently in the budget). Let’s begin with an EHD fav…
ABLE
1. Becky Straight Leg Jean | 2. Nera Sneaker | 3. The Merly Jacket | 4. Ella Backpack | 5. Katie Sweater Knit Tank | 6. Harris Oversized Button Down Shirt
Price Point: $$
Sizes: XXS – 3X
Our Review: Ooooh, y’all are gonna love this one: ABLE is a sustainable brand working to create jobs for women…and their leather goods, jewelry, apparel, denim, and shoes are heirloom-quality at an achievable price, to boot. (Amy Poehler had it right: women do get things done!) Check out ABLE for quiet, cool, put-together looks and ethical Madewell lookalikes.

1. Mariner Striped Rollneck Sweater | 2. Standard Short Sleeve Jumpsuit | 3. Britt Work Jacket | 4. Anna Double Breasted Blazer | 5. Prospect Tee | 6. Taylor Striped Cardigan
Price Point: $$$
Sizes: XXS – XXL, 24-33, 0-14
Our Review: If you also love scrolling the Alex Mill website, it’s for a good reason: this is some LEGACY good design. The team behind the scenes? Alex Drexler (the OG, who started selling shirts in 2012), Somsack Sikhounmuong (the former Creative Director of Madewell and J. Crew), and, uh, Mickey freakin’ Drexler (founder of Old Navy and Madewell; former CEO of The Gap and J. Crew). If you’re missing the Madewell and J. Crew of yore – you know, the kinds of clothes with clean colors, simple silhouettes, and fresh, delightful details – THIS IS WHERE THEY’RE ALL AT NOW. You’re welcome!

1. The Deep End | 2. The Beat | 3. The Extra Extra | 4. The Easy Breezy | 5. The Early Mornings Tee | 6. The Good Aura
Price Point: $$$
Sizes: XS-XL, 24-34
Our Review: The Deep End button-up inspired this entire post, actually! Last year, I mentioned that AYR’s button-ups were the best out there (this is coming from a gal who name-drops two Madewell pieces in her author bio) and it turns out that a lot of you agree! Visit AYR for quality, true-to-size, coastal Nancy Myers movie-esque pieces that’ll last the test of time (seriously, this is even one of Oprah’s go-to basics brands!). And while you’re at it, be sure to peek at their sale section for huuuuuge markdowns. I love a business that knows how to throw us a deep discount, you know?

1. Gathered Waist Midi Dress | 2. Balloon Sleeveless Top | 3. Pleated Barrel-Leg Wool-Blend Pants | 4. Striped Knitted Mini Polo Dress | 5. Scarf Detail Linen Dress | 6. Boxy Double-Faced Wool Jacket
Price Point: $$
Sizes: XS-L, 24-32, 2-14
Our Review: Elephant in the room: COS has work to do on the sizing front. But if you fall into the “straight size” basket right now, this is a great source for chic, interesting, on-trend clothing that won’t feel dated this time next year. COS excels at the classic details (those pleats!), but they can also make a basic piece feel a little extra special (the neck on that dress is incredible).

1. The Utility Barrel Pant | 2. The Washable Clean Silk Short-Sleeve Square Shirt | 3. The Day Heel | 4. The Half-Zip | 5. The Carpenter Jean | 6. The Organic Cotton Cutaway Tank
Price Point: $$
Sizes: XXS-XXL, 23-33, 00-16
Our Review: If you’re also a little nosy (I am), you’ll LOVE the material cost breakdowns at the bottom of each product. Everlane’s whole thing is “radical transparency” – they were one of the first movers to embrace the “cutting out the middleman to reduce our prices” messaging that the world’s since come to know and love. Check them out for well-fitting denim, breezy linen, organic cotton tops, and special pieces that can take you from office to night out (hi, cute heels!).

1. Ireland Long-Sleeve Playsuit | 2. Rory Maxi Shirtdress | 3. Wicklow Italian Chino | 4. Olive Original Capelet | 5. Jameson Utility Jogger | 6. Patrick Popover Henley
Price Point: $$$$
Sizes: XXS-XL, 0-12
Our Review: This is one of Em’s favorite brands! (You can watch her video review of the romper above right here.) If you’re the “save up, buy once, buy for life” type, Frank & Eileen ABSOLUTELY needs to be on your radar. They’re a women-owned, women-led business producing ethical, sustainable pieces that’ll stand the test of time. I mean, that dress? Those chinos? Even the cut of the henley is considered and a little special! If you have the budget and you’re ready to buy *THE* basic that you’ll turn to for the rest of your life, this is a great option. Also if you would like a little discount use code: ESCAPE and it will remove $50 from your cart at checkout. One time use only and is good through 9/1/24.

1. The Pleated Short | 2. The Arbor Dress | 3. The Hemingway Top | 4. The Cargo Dress | 5. The Dock Jean | 6. The College Sweatshirt
Price Point: $$$$
Sizes: 0-3 (read: 0-14, for us normies who only know regular sizing numbers)
Our Review: Had to fit in one more splurge-y recommendation for those of you on the hunt for investment pieces! The Great is an incredible resource for the kind of clothing that people will stop you in the street to ask about (and I know this for a fact, because Em gets a BANANAS number of DMs on Instagram anytime she appears in stories wearing a piece from here, haha). If you’re a Madewell lover who also enjoys the quirk and charm of Anthropologie, spend a few minutes browsing The Great’s website – it’s fun, even to just look, I swear!).

1. Camp-Collar Shirt | 2. Jolie Top | 3. Scalloped-Trim Shift Dress | 4. Pintuck Midi Dress | 5. Elena Puff-Sleeve Dress | 6. Sailor Slim Wide-Leg Chino Pant
Price Point: $$
Sizes: XXS-3X, 23-37, 00-24
Our Review: HOLD UP. J. CREW IS SO, SO, SO GOOD AGAIN? There were a few years there where it felt like J. Crew kind of fell out of the cultural conversation, but if you haven’t shopped there in a second, pop back in – OLD J. CREW IS BACK. Simple cuts, easy-to-mix-and-match basics, UNBELIEVABLY flattering dresses, MAJOR sales, and all in a beautifully-selected, curated color palette. I did a major wardrobe refresh with a ton of stuff from J. Crew and have been THRILLED with how well everything’s held up so far (and it all looks good together, too!).

1. Soft Denim Short Sleeve Shirt | 2. Stripe Poplin Oversized Shirt | 3. Supersoft Zip Up Hoody | 4. Basic Crew Neck Tee | 5. Indigo French Terry Seamed Dress | 6. Supersoft Vintage Sweats
Price Point: $$
Sizes: XS-XL
Our Review: Monrow is a go-to shop for those cool girls who embody the “I woke up like this/I just threw this on” vibe. Their pieces drape beautifully, come in gorgeous earthy colors, and are cut in such a thoughtful way! Their sizing leaves a bit (or a lot) to be desired, but the oversized fit and flexible construction of their clothing means that their XL still feels comfortable and breezy. And, I mean…how good is that denim top?

1. All-Day Heeled Mule | 2. Catalina Slide Sandal | 3. Go-To Flatform Sandal | 4. Emma d’Orsay Oxford | 5. Stella Go-To Block Heel Sandal | 6. Women’s Huarache Sandal
Price Point: $$
Sizes: 5-11
Our Review: As the owner of not one, not two, not three, but SIX pairs of Nisolos, I say this: these shoes last forever and look better with age. I grabbed my first pair – the d’Orsay oxford – in 2019 after joining the team at EHD, and my collection has only grown since. Their summer sandals and slides are so cute, but their Chelsea boots and winter flats are ESSENTIAL (I survived multiple walking tours in icy, salted-out Quebec in these heeled boots). Their pieces come in a variety of colors and tones, so you can find a nude shade that works for you! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

1. Tie-Belt Jean Trench Coat | 2. High-Waisted Vintage Crop Flare Jeans | 3. Split-Neck Button-Down Top | 4. Waist-Defined Crepe Top | 5. High-Waisted Jean Midi Skirt | 6. High-Waisted Utility Pants
Price Point: $
Sizes: XS-4X, 0-30 (plus petite and tall offerings!)
Our Review: OK GIRL, I SEE YOU. If you’re used to the Old Navy of olden times – you know, the place where you’d stop in to buy an American flag shirt on your way to a July 4th celebration – you’re missing out on high-quality, SUPER size-inclusive clothing that looks and feels WAY more expensive than you’d expect. I mean, be real – if this didn’t say “Old Navy” up top, I would have assumed these were from Madewell! Pop on over to the site and enjoy being pleasantly surprised by the new Old Navy.

1. Canopy Linen Blend Tank Dress | 2. Coastal Double Gauze Wide Leg Pant | 3. Sunset Lightweight Cotton Classic Shirt | 4. Sunset Light Gauze Notch Neck Dress | 5. Canopy Linen Blend Tulip Back Tank | 6. Daily Twill Crop Pant
Price Point: $$
Sizes: XS-3XL
Our Review: We were introduced to Pact when Emily did a partnership with them last year. We all really loved that they focus on basics, have a better size range than most, AND are super sustainable! Aside from comfort, it’s their main focus – “We don’t just claim sustainability, we certify it. We proudly partner with Fair Trade USA, Global Organic Textile Standard and SimpliZero to ensure our products, and our processes, support both people and planet.” This is a great and affordable brand you should absolutely check out!

1. Cotton Modal Muscle Tank | 2. 100% Washable Silk Skirt | 3. Organic Cotton Twill Overalls | 4. 100% European Linen Jumpsuit | 5. Washable Silk V-Neck Cami | 6. 100% European Linen Strapless Maxi Dress
Price Point: $
Sizes: XS-XL, 25-33, 0-16
Our Review: Quince will be a new brand to a lot of y’all, and you’re in for a treat! If you’re looking at these prices and thinking “Wait, you can’t sell a responsibly-made, washable silk skirt for $60?” – QUINCE DOES, AND IT ROCKS. (Thousands of nearly-unanimous 5-star reviews can’t be wrong!) The founders of Quince built their careers working at high-end brands but wanted to make the same high-quality essentials at an achievable price point for the average person. Mission accomplished, right?

1. Francisca Dress | 2. Lucy High Rise Capri Jeans | 3. Rhett Dress | 4. Louise Knit Top | 5. Renna Top | 6. Marielle Dress
Price Point: $$$
Sizes: XS-XL, 0-12, 14-24
Our Review: Before I praise their clothing, I wanna take a second to call them out: Reformation, GIRL, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Why are the extended sizes banished to separate listings in a niche, difficult-to-find part of the website? It’s SO FRUSTRATING. I don’t want to “Where’s Waldo” my way around your website, I just want to buy a cute dress that I saw on Instagram! (For ease, here’s the separate link to shop if you’re a 14-24.)
ANYWAY. If you can manage to navigate the website without pulling an Andy Bernard (screaming; punching a hole in a wall), Reformation does make gorgeous, sustainable clothing. They’re most well-known for their dresses – you may recognize them as the go-to wedding guest dresses of millennial women across America – but their everyday basics, like these jeans or this tank top, are well-made and durable. (And to give them their flowers, they do have models with diverse body types! And they do make clothes that fit larger bodies! Except again, it does feel like it’s been banished to the boonies, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.)
I clearly have a love/hate relationship with Reformation, but I do have a platform here, and maybe it’s big enough that they’ll stop making my fellow 12/14 + gals feel like freakin’ lepers when we’re just trying to give them a bunch of money! Anyway. Great clothes that will make you look/feel like a princess, UI that actively works against extended-size shoppers. PLEASE FIX IT, REFORMATION! (I’ll buy so much more, I swear!!!!)
Sezane
1. Eulalia Dress | 2. Sandy Skirt | 3. Will Jacket | 4. Ulysse Shirt | 5. Caprice Dress | 6. Tomboy Shirt
Price Point: $$$
Sizes: 2-14, 23-36, 0-16
Our Review: Here’s another one of Em’s recent go-to brands! (You may recognize the Leana Dress from our Article shoot or from this video review – be sure to follow us on LTK for more real-time fashion reviews!) ANYWAY. Man, Sezane does it so right. That button-up shirt is covered with sweet white embroidered flowers, but their pieces come with tons of different color/print options! If you’re looking for clothes with an effortless, charming, Parisian vibe…look no further. Happy shopping

1. Square Neck Cami Vest | 2. Nikita Fashion Sneakers with Memory Foam Insole | 3. Mid-Rise 90’s Baggy Jeans | 4. Ruched Maxi A-Line Dress | 5. High-Rise Modern Gauze Wide Leg Pull-On Pant | 6. Rib Bodysuit
Price Point: $
Sizes: XXS-4X, 00-30
Our Review: PSA: The ‘A New Day’ line at Target, in particular, is FILLED with good Madewell dupes. (I’ll let the photos speak for themself.) But let me call out two pieces in particular – that bodysuit has a fuller-coverage bottom, which is a DREAM for those of us who don’t love thong bodysuits; Then I can’t get over that CUTE Cami Vest. Target is only continuing to elevate while keeping the prices so affordable and we LOVE it!

1. River Henley Sweater | 2. Sea + Pattern Limited Edition Drop Necklace | 3. Nell Dress Crinkle Cotton | 4. Jenna Bee Blue Stripes Sisal Bag | 5. Shelter Cotton Cardigan | 6. Birdie Sleeveless Dress
Price Point: $$$
Sizes: XXS-4X
Our Review: A final, super-size-inclusive brand for my slow fashion fans! The cuts here are simple, oversized, and clean and the details are SO thoughtful (think reinforced buttons, fabrics that get better with each wash, and constant product iterations based on real customer feedback). If your style is unfussy, a bit earthy, and timeless…Tradlands might be your new favorite store, I think.
That’s it for me today – are there any brands you’ve tried that you’d like to recommend to the class? We’re all ears… xx

Estate Sale Shopping For Dummies – All The Tips And Tricks You Need To Know

You’ve been to the thrift store. You love the flea market. You’ve exhausted Facebook Marketplace. Where’s a gal to find that special something at a price that won’t break the bank? The answer is the estate sale – so buckle up, because today we’re exploring the deals that can be found in the land of downsizing, death, debt, and divorce. (The “4 D’s,” as they’re known in the estate sale world!)
I’ve often heard that my friends – even the savvy designers who can greet flea market vendors by name! – are too intimidated to hit the estate sale circuit, so let’s break it down! Enter: my step-by-step guide to get you feeling confident, prepped, and ready to shop like a pro.

Perrier Jouet Champagne Glasses (Set of 4, 2 Pictured) – $15 (Retail: $100)
Sarcophagus Trinket Box – $15 (Retail: $675)
Champagne Limoges-Style Box – $15 (Retail: $30)
Bamboo Bud Vase – $37.50 (Retail: $475)
Onion Limoges Box – $47.50 (Retail: $222)
Silver-Plated Knife Rests – $30 (Retail: $150)
Malachite Trinket Box – 22.50 (Retail: $54)
Fly Trinket Box – $20 (Retail: $60)
Letter Opener – $20 (Retail: $45)
How much I paid, in total, at estate sales: $222.50
How much I would have paid, had I bought these pieces online:
If you’ve ever wondered where your favorite vintage furniture store or online vendor sources their product, the overwhelming majority would cite estate sales as a key supplier! (Actually, the overwhelming majority would probably stay tight-lipped out of fear of competition, but I’m a yapper who can’t keep a secret.)
I reached into my dining room cabinet and pulled a few of my recent estate sale scores. Each piece was purchased within the past year, and I looked up the current vintage market price for each – it’s safe to say that if you’re not shopping estate sales, YOU’RE MISSING OUT ON HUGE SAVINGS. Champagne taste on a beer budget? Buy your pieces straight from the source, just like an expert – no vendors or markups required. Let’s get into it!

serving classic regency vibes at this la estate saleWhere to Find Estate SalesEstateSales.net: It is, in fact, this easy. Pop in your zip code, hit enter, and you’ll be taken to a master list of all the sales in your area. If you’re a beginner, I’d recommend customizing the filters on the left hand side to eliminate auctions or online-only sales. (There are still lots of deals to be found in those categories, but they open a whole new can of logistical worms.) Local Companies: Once you’ve sorted through a few sale listings, take note of the listing party. If it’s a business, sign up for their email list – you’ll learn about their next sale before anyone else, and you’ll also often have first dibs to purchase any leftover pieces at deeply, deeply discounted prices. (I’ve scored more 50% off deals from Sales by Helen than I care to admit!) Once you develop a rapport with your local businesses, they may allow you to pre-buy pieces or add yourself to the sign-up sheet (we’ll get there) via text message. It pays – literally – to be nice here!Craigslist, Yard Signs & More: Don’t skip out on private, family-run sales. If you’re trying to stretch your dollar, these will be your best bet. (In my experience, these may lack the same organization that you’d see from a professional sale – allocate a little extra time here. But since the items included haven’t been assessed by appraisers, you’re far more likely to score an awesome deal!)How To Prepare For Your First Estate Sale
Before you dive in, a word of wisdom: the estate sale game is, for the most part, luck-based. You’re making decisions off imperfect information; you’re hoping that other shoppers have differing tastes; you’re banking that the home won’t be cleared out before you arrive. If you love certainty, this might not be fun! But if you go in with the attitude that it’s up to chance and that you’ll find the pieces that are meant for you, you’ll always have a great time. You’ve been warned! Now let’s get you prepped for your first sale visit.
Step One: Pick A Sale – My rule of thumb? If you like the home, it’s worth a shot. If there’s at least one item in the photos that makes you go “hm, that’s kind of cool,” it’s worth a shot. If there’s no home decor pictured but the fashion is high-end and well-kept, it’s worth a shot.
Step Two: Do Your Research – Google Lens is your friend here! If you spot an item you love in the preview photos, do a quick search to familiarize yourself with its standard pricing. (You can also use Google Lens in real-time at the sale, but I prefer prepping ahead of time in the interest of moving quickly!)
Several vintage store owners I’ve spoken to over the years take this step to the next level: they check out the Google street view and aerial view of the property, in hopes of gleaning a better understanding of where certain pieces may be located inside the home. (If you’re a normal person, you can skip this step. If you’re a full-time vintage seller in need of inventory to pay your bills…well, creep away, girl!)
Step Three: Prepare Yourself – Set your budget. Clarify the parking situation. Take care to read the listed terms and conditions – understand if you need to bring ID (sometimes required for more expensive purchases), if credit cards are accepted, and what the pickup process will look like for larger, bulkier items.

jumpscare in the mirror. but i grabbed that adorable shelving piece on the right for a song! When Should I Go To The Estate Sale?I have a hot take here: if you’re just starting out, stick to the last day. The deals will be far better – prices can be marked down as much as 75% – and some sellers will also enact an “all you can fit in one box” standard pricing in an attempt to totally clear out the home.
Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the lay of the land (the hold tables, the lines, the entry/exit procedure, all that jazz), figure out which day you like best. Maybe you’re the type who wants to sit in their car at 3 AM to grab the first slot on a sign-up sheet! Maybe you like posting up in line at 5 AM with a lawn chair! Or maybe that chaos and competition can feel a little overwhelming, so you realize that you’re a definitive day 2 or day 3 shopper. (Maybe you’ll learn that you hate the whole thing and that you prefer online sales and auctions instead! In any case, you’re learning something about yourself. That’s pretty neat, no?)
What To Bring (And What To Leave In The Car)For the casual estate saler, I’d recommend keeping the following in your car before heading out.
Sunscreen: There’s a chance you’re going to end up standing outside. Protect yourself! (I keep this roller in my car for touch-ups – it’s perfect for the flea market, too.)A Tape Measure: Always. Who wants to buy a piece and then realize it doesn’t actually fit? Compact Tote Bags: I’ve yet to encounter a sale without a “no large bags policy,” but schlepping all that stuff to your car can be hard without one! A collapsible bag like this will be easy to stash in a smaller purse or even a large pocket – just pull it out after you’ve paid to transport everything easily!Boxes & Blankets: Some sales will allow you to carry a box inside. Some sales will provide boxes to you at checkout. Nearly every sale, however, will be out of packing paper. If you’re going hunting, keep an empty cardboard box and some blankets or towels in the back of your car. (Trust me: one day you’ll buy glassware, china, or ceramics, and you will be SO THANKFUL. A stressful drive home is not how you want to end the day!)Dolly: If you’re planning to scoop furniture, you’re responsible for moving it out of the home. Smaller pieces can be managed with a dolly. Larger pieces may require a rental truck or a team of movers. Have a plan before you head to the sale.A Friend: If you’re buying a lot, bring a pal. They can serve as a second opinion, an extra set of hands, or a valued line of defense against the vultures at the hold table. I far prefer shopping solo at the mall or flea market, but estate sales are a team sport in my book.
a nearly-flawless 8-person set of tobacco leaf china for $180! (retail price: $4,880 – seriously)You’re In! Now What? You’ve found the home. You’ve parked the car. You’ve stood in line. And now, it’s your turn to shop. My suggested strategy here is similar to the one I employ at the flea market: I like to do one pass to familiarize myself with the layout and inventory, a second pass to deep-dive into every nook and cranny of each room, and a final lap before checking out to see if any items had been put down by other shoppers.
The catch? If something stands out to you, GRAB IT. If there’s a chance you’d like to take a piece home, pick it up. There is no greater pain than seeing the vase you’d “be right back for” as it exits the premises in another’s arms. Some sales will create a tag for you where they can mark items as sold, which can free up your hands a bit – but when it doubt, pick something up and DO NOT put it down! (Again, this is where having a friend can come in handy.)
The second catch? DON’T TRUST THE HOLDS TABLE. The holds table is a lawless swamp – a helpful tool that’s been transformed into a bastion of stealing and drama. In theory, the holds table is a service – a place for you to put down claimed items while you continue to shop – but in reality, it’s rarely marked, oft unmonitored, and most folks genuinely don’t realize that the pieces on top aren’t supposed to be shopped or taken. Don’t risk it – keep schlepping and say a silent “thank you” that at least you’re getting a workout in while shopping.
And I’ll echo the time-honored advice to look everywhere. I’ve seen folks leave sales with cans of food, craft supplies, packing materials, lawnmowers – the list never ends. Check in drawers, basements, or garages. If it’s not marked off or blocked off, it’s yours to explore. When else are you going to be able to be this nosy in a stranger’s home? Enjoy the process!
3 Final Estate Sale Negotiating ThoughtsYou’ve navigated the sale, you’ve filled your arms, and you’re ready to check out. What’s next?
Everything is Negotiable…Kind Of: When it comes to multi-day sales, any discounting requests will likely be met with a response akin to “kick rocks.” There may be some wiggle room via a bundling discount for those looking to purchase a large quantity of items, however. The likelihood of a successful negotiation increases with each day – read the room, read the seller, and play nice!
Cash Can (Occasionally) Be King: Within the last few years, I’ve seen a massive switch away from cash in favor of paying with credit cards, Zelle, or Venmo. The classic refrain that cash can sweeten a deal? It’s no longer the normal experience (here in LA, at least – I’d imagine that the trend is crossing the country as we speak).
The real value of cash, IMO, is as a price limiter. I bought the storage piece and china set you see above for $200 flat at a family-run estate sale – a price only agreed to because the sellers saw me empty my pockets and knew I only had $200 in cash.
BE NICE: I alluded to it before, but YOU NEED TO BE NICE. Be nice to the others in line; be nice to the people who let you in the door; be nice to the folks at checkout. In the instance above, I hadn’t realized that the home was swarming with family members – not other shoppers – and it was their advocacy on my behalf that landed me the deal! (“Come on,” they told the woman manning the till. “It’s almost over. She loves them. Just give them to her,” the family said as I offered my paltry sum.) Be complimentary, be kind, and keep any other thoughts to yourself – sometimes luck can be aided by a good attitude, I find
If you have any other tips or tricks, I’d love to hear them! Have you ever scored anything awesome at an estate sale? Any stories? Have you been inside of any incredible houses? (I loved Tony Duquette’s 2023 studio estate sale – scored a huge $37 framed photograph from underneath a table on the final day of the sale that shocked the sellers; they had no idea it was there! – and I’m crazy about the beautiful homes I’ve seen through Handled Estate Sales here in LA!)

Three Easy Upgrades Gretch Is Adding To Her Rental Kitchen (+ A Renter-Friendly Reno Project On The Horizon)

I’m sitting across my half-baked, honey oak rental kitchen, staring it down from the couch as my left foot rests, iced and elevated. The Bear is streaming on the massive TV I’ve placed on a bench and pushed up against the back of my kitchen island. I tune out the show, opting instead to question this abandoned project and my sanity.

About two weeks ago, I took off camping to celebrate a best friend’s birthday and came back a changed woman. But not for the better. The trip started out wonderful—a carefree vacation with close friends, overlooking a beautiful body of water. Paddleboarding all day with dinner by the fire, friends piled onto inner tubes we’d been using as couches, laughing all night long. But the next day, the birthday girl cracks her phone and doubles down by accidentally dropping it in the water, rendering it useless. At dusk AND dawn, the bugs descend on our camp, literally thousands, eating us alive. Chiggers. Mosquitoes. We all become more bug bite than skin. The red cherry on top is a sunburn that graces my cheeks with a swimsuit line so sharp it could cut wood (pun intended and you’ll soon see why). The good times are fading fast as frustration and discomfort set in, but we do our best to present a united, positive front. And with one swift chop I shut that down immediately.
A swing and a miss with the axe I was using to prep wood for our evening fire instead comes down hard on my foot. I’m bleeding profusely because the only protection I have are my Birkenstocks over bare skin. Miraculously, the top strap stops me from removing any digits but a fresh gash presents itself in the negative space between. I’m rushed to St. Charles emergency room, a cool 45 minutes away, looking through tears at my foot sitting up on the dash, watching as the Coors light shirt wrapped around my wound changes color. From a dirt-encrusted white to a deep, tie-dyed red (DIY coming soon! All natural pigment!). A panic attack and nine stitches later…I am, essentially, fine.

But what does this have to do with my kitchen? And why did I just write three paragraphs about a foot injury on a design blog? Well, I write like I talk—a lot. Plus I want you to feel sorry for me. But before this all went down, my kitchen design plan was scheduled to go up last week. Meaning before I left for the trip, I needed to start putting said plan into action, taking ideas from my head and my Amazon cart over to the room itself. And so I did. I intended to come back and have last week to finish up the project while Em was out on vacation. But life had other plans and I instead spent that week in Bend, OR recovering. And now this half-done kitchen is laughing at me and my bum foot as I figure out what to share with you all.

You see, my kitchen is dated, comprised of warm-toned wood cabinets, dramatic boob lights, and ornate, silver drawer pulls. A makeover was inevitable, but I’m fairly new to the place and still too timid to ask if I can just paint over their delicious honey oak cabinet exterior since my design limitations are locked into a lease agreement. But thankfully, from the words of Zoolander’s Hansel (and more recently EHD), wall-to-wall wood is “so hot right now”, so I’ve decided to lean in.
For me, this looks like covering the kitchen walls in matching wood-printed, renter-friendly contact paper (maybe eventually swapping it for the real deal if I can convince myself and my landlord that the “wood paneled” look serves). Doing this should, in theory, elongate the cabinets hindered by a drop ceiling and give me the slightly more 70s look I crave anyway. Plus, Lone Fox has me dreaming of a wood-drenched space of my own ever since he paneled the pass-thru space between his bedroom and bathroom. It got me thinking that maybe, just maybe, an all-over honey-glow wouldn’t be so bad. It might even be…cool?

So I went forth and covered a portion of my kitchen in this nearly identical wood contact paper from Amazon—a really inexpensive way for me to test drive the look. It was so easy to apply (when I had two working feet) and I can 100% remove it with ease. I finished covering most of the walls above the cabinets before I ran out of contact paper and time. I took it just a touch above the crown moulding and a little bit past the wood of the cabinetry so I could swoop back around later with an x-acto knife and give it a trim. That “later” part has yet to happen.

To really lean into the monochrome vibe, I ordered these beautiful wooden cabinet pulls from Etsy. Swapping cabinet hardware is usually the easiest, fastest, and most inexpensive way to give your kitchen a refresh when you don’t have a lot of free will with permanent design choices like me. For now, I’m storing the old pulls until move out and going back to staring at these wooden ones until my head spins. I love them, on their own, but I’m not fully convinced about them installed. The cabinet pilot holes were a little janky to begin with and their crookedness kind of stands out to me. The color match isn’t as close as I’d like either, but I’m also not sure I hate the way it looks since it does provide a bit of dimension. I might attempt a stain on the pulls to see what that does for my staring problem. But we shall see.

Another easy swap would be the lighting. And as you can see here, I have not one but TWO ridiculous boob lights. A perfectly perky, bedazzled RACK. These simply have to go. I could swap the fixtures for a new pair—and I might eventually—but this first round of design is all about even easier moves, like contact paper and drawer pulls. I’ve had my eye on these Tulip light covers for a while and I’m really hoping to try them out in the space.

They look pretty great in my mockup and I love their temporary status. Something about the fabric and the grid pattern on the Gem style really sings with the tile backsplash. Plus I like how they add a bit of softness to the space. I’m curious how easy they are to install, but from what I’ve seen online, it looks pretty simple! But easy and simple are only fun for so long, and this wouldn’t be a project of mine if I didn’t choose to sprinkle in something semi-complicated.

My kitchen is connected to my living space and while I love an open concept I’m very much about “zoning” different areas and their functions and it’s been tricky to do that in here. My place has front and back entrances with large windows, providing minimal wall space on either end.

A terrible, singular ceiling fan sits overhead the intended dining area just to the right of the kitchen. Smack dab in the living area is my kitchen island, anchored to a support beam. There’s a spot for a couple of barstools on the backside of the island, but with the addition of a small dining table, the area just feels too cramped and obstructs the path to my balcony. Also, just doing barstools won’t leave me with enough seating and I want to be able to sit across from my people.

When I moved in, I placed my large sofa against the front window wall, setting my TV along the wall to the right of it. The above is just bad Photoshop, but you get the idea. Not my favorite layout because it’s really not as comfortable to have a movie night with friends this way, cranking your neck to see the screen. But there’s not enough space for the couch to face it unless it becomes one with the island and inevitably disrupts the flow of the room. So I had a “project thought,” which is a sign that mild construction is on the way. To test it out, I rearranged and have been experiencing a half-done living room for some time now, to see if my plan is worth the follow-through.

Basically, I swapped the dining zone with my couching zone, moving the sofa from the front window to the long wall across from the kitchen island. Now the tv sits on a low bench, butted up against the island. It looks so stupid and huge, BUT I am enjoying the new layout spatially and I think I’ll go through with said “project” in hopes that I can turn it into a cool focal point, full of intention and intrigue. Maybe it ends up looking stupid too, but I won’t know unless I try!

The Project: I’m aiming to build a (renter-friendly) half wall against the back of the island to serve as the TV wall. It would align with the annoying support beam and wrap around to form an L, stopping instead of returning along the other side of the island. I’d of course need to upgrade to a Frame TV and size WAY down from my current, especially because the couch sits pretty close, so no need for a huge screen. The wall would be constructed in a way that would be sturdy but impermanent. It would match the rest of the newly saturated honey oak kitchen (integrating seamlessly in my mind). Rising maybe 18” or so from the counter, it could serve as a visual separation between kitchen and living room, but more than that it would give me extra elbow room over in “wooden wonderland”. Throw in a half wall and suddenly the island transforms into super-deep counter space. I can store my coffee maker and cookbooks up against the new wooden backsplash in the kitchen, leaving me plenty of counter space, with unsightly cords and pages totally hidden from view on the other side.

Now, this will definitely require some power tools (and probably supervision knowing my track record), but I think I can make it happen after I’m wholly healed in the foot department. I ordered another roll of contact paper and plan on seeing the rest through, taking the “wood” all the way across the back wall, outlining the balcony doors and over and around the support beam. For now, the boob lights continue to haunt me and I’m hoping the right answer on these new pulls comes to me in a dream or something. I’m excited to get the ball rolling and see what else is revealed to me as I go. I can’t guarantee that my ideas will work or that they’ll stick around by the time I post a “kitchen reveal”. But for now, this is where my creative brain is marinating while I wait for the feeling in my foot to return and The Bear to come back from commercial. Stay tuned!

Sincerely,
Gretch

The EHD-Approved Amazon Prime Day Sale Picks (Y’all They’re Good!!)

So we know this is another product roundup post but with this one time is of the essence…it’s Prime Day! The deals are hot and don’t last long. I promise you that I searched through pages and pages of products so that I found either pieces we have actually used and loved or ones I genuinely liked and wanted to feature. You won’t find your Clorox wand refills here so let’s get to the good stuff!

Chic Black & Rattan Cabinet | Warm White & Honey Cane Dresser | Walnut Mid-Century-Style Bar Cabinet
Let’s start with some cute and practical furniture – cabinets and dressers. I love the modern feel of the one on the far left. It’s trend-forward but still classic enough. Plus, it’s only $85 right now! Then for the dresser in the middle, it’s a beautiful traditional-style piece that isn’t overly detailed which I think makes it more versatile and sophisticated. It also comes in a natural wood too. Then finally, the bar cabinet on the right is a hard worker! It’s going to hold your records, your wine, store your glassware, and whatever else you want to put behind those doors. It’s such a cute MCM-inspired piece for under $200.

Black Frame with Ivory Mat | Oak Picture Frame
If you haven’t noticed by now, when it comes to modern frames we like them thin baby! So these two beauties are perfect and I love them. Also, they are VERY well-reviewed! Don’t sleep on Amazon frames y’all.

Framed Wall Mirror | Arched Full Length Mirror | Ladder Full Length Mirror
Also, don’t sleep on Amazon mirrors. Look how great and versatile all of these ones are. The clean lines are perfect. I think that the black metal mirror would look so pretty as a vanity mirror. The gold one comes in a tone of different sizes and also has a stand if you don’t want to hand or lean it against the wall. Then I just really love the wood frame one and it’s on sale for a great price.

Scalloped Jute Area Rugs | Green Genuine Sheepskin Rug
Let’s talk fun accent rugs. Caitlin has talked about the scalloped style before because she got a similar one for her kitchen. It’s so sweet and comes in a bunch of sizes both big and small. And while it’s still very much summer and very hot, think how cool and cozy this dark green sheepskin rug would look layered over your area rug. Adds texture, color, and would be great to sprawl on:)

Dyson V8 Cordless Vacuum | Self-Emptying Roomba | Little Green Machine
Now for a decor break. Cleaning machines are the perfect thing to buy on Prime Day if you’ve already been thinking about it and saving for it. These prices are hard to beat and Black Friday isn’t for awhile. Starting with the Dyson, I own and love this machine and have had it for about 6 years. And today it’s 36% off! But I also have many friends who have a Roomba for daily maintenance and LOVE it. Especially perfect for dog and cat owners. Just make sure to keep your eye on it

Natural Soy Wax Candle | Double Taper Candle Holder | Paddywax Soy Wax Candle in Ceramic Jar
Then what’s better than after you’ve cleaned your house to light an amazing candle? Not much. But then can be pricey so why not save some $$? This Maison Louis Marie candle has been an EHD staple for years. Two of our favorite scents are No. 6 Neige de Printemps and No. 9 Vallee de Farney. But if you just want the candle ambiance without the scent then let me recommend this awesome candelabra. It’s cool and modern but with so much fun texture. Another perfectly scented candle is this one with its really pretty and reusable ceramic jar. I’ve also bought this scent and really loved it.

Our Place Always Pan 2.0 Nonstick | 12 Piece Caraway Cookware Set
But let’s get cooking…in style! The Always Pan has been a frontrunner in style and function for years now. There are a bunch of color options so it can happily sit on your stovetop while adding to your decor. This is also the second version so it’s new and improved! Now, I have tried Caraway myself but I know Ryann and her husband LOVED their set. And since it’s so pretty too why not give it a try if you’re in the market??

Countertop Nugget Ice Maker | 12 Pack Reusable Glass Straws
These two picks are a little self-serving as I was looking for a tabletop ice maker and more glass straws:) But this ice maker is one of the more affordable options with lots of great reviews. Should we do it guys?? Then if you haven’t gotten on the glass straw bandwagon already now could be the time. I love mine so much that I want more if that says anything.

Expandable Drawer Organizer | 12 Piece Stainless Steel Knife Set
I bought all of my bamboo drawer organizers off of Amazon a couple of years ago and they still look so good and make my life infinitely better. This one also looks like an excellent buy if your flatware drawer needs some help. I promise your life WILL improve. Then this knife set has an EXCELLENT rating and is over 50% off! I also think the colors are pretty which doesn’t hurt but there are two more options if these don’t feel like you:)

Vintage-Inspired Blue Ceramic Vase | Antique-Style Vase | Set of 2 White Ceramic Vases
Naturally, we wanted to add some small decor pieces. These savings are so good and the pieces are great! The blue one has a fun shape, pretty color and pattern, and is oh…only $12! The middle vase is 12″ tall (but available in 17″), comes also in black, and looks SO much more expensive than it is. Then you want to know what’s better than one vase? Two! This set will add instantly add such a cool and organic vibe to your home. If you have a traditional style home and decor don’t be afraid to mix it up with a set like this one. It will probably look awesome.

EHD loves the Frame TV and that is something we are VERY vocal about. I know whenever I choose to buy a TV it will absolutely be a Frame, no doubt in my mind. So if you have been thinking about it we can’t recommend them enough. Your home decor will thank you!

This little guy was kinda a random addition but my cousin has one and loves it. She had so much guilt when she had to be gone at work for hours so this camera/treat giver was a great way to interact with her pup! It’s 39% off right now too.

100 Pack Slim Velvet Hangers | Shelves for Books or Spices | Green Checkered Luxury Bath Towels
In a way that doesn’t make me sound like Mommie Dearest, I exclusively have black slim velvet hangers in my house and have for years. I love them and they truly make so much more space in my closets. It can initially feel like a big investment but with this set, you get 100 for only $39! That’s a great deal. They also come in a few other colors if you don’t love the idea of black. I can’t recommend them enough. Then for a great little shelf, these wood ones are affordable, great, and really versatile. Emily has something similar in her kitchen drop zone but they are great for books, spices, skincare products, you name it! For those cute towels, they were actually a link my cousin sent me (she got 2 shoutouts in this post! lol). The green is so fun yet not too overpowering and I still love a checkered pattern. It’s a classic. If you are tired of white towels these could be a great swap.

Paula’s Choice Exfoliant | Supergoop Play Sunscreen SPF 50
Naturally, I had to end with skin and hair rec as they are my other passions. Now I haven’t tried this Paula’s Choice Exfoliant but when Arlyn asked for a rec to help her overall skin texture this product was recommended so many times. Even one of my best friends texted me saying she saw Arlyn’s ask and that she had to try this exfoliant. It’s a winner with all of you (and Arlyn now:)). So if you’ve been curious now could be a great time to try! But none of the skincare really matters if we don’t protect our skin with SPF. It’s annoying but it’s so true. This sunscreen is awesome. Em loves it, the team loves it, and in this big size what more could you want? It’s 20% so take advantage!!

Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother | Redken Bonding Leave-In Conditioner
I won’t go on about my hair journey (I put y’all through enough every Sunday in the Link Up) but these are the two leave-in conditioners I use after my showers (not at the same time!). You can’t go wrong with either one. I’ve been using the Olaplex one for longer and it’s great. I just wanted to switch it up for fun (ha) and this Redken one is HIGHLY recommended by hairdressers. Choose your own adventure:)

Pureology Color Fanatic Leave-In Conditioner | Redken One United Leave-In Conditioner
Wait, another “choose your own adventure”! These are the two sprays (again, not at the same time) I use after I let the other leave-in conditioner sit for a few minutes to help brush out my wet hair. I started with the Pureology one which I loved but once I ran out wanted to try the Redken one. Again, I loved them both so it’s up to you which you want to try. Haircare is fun so you can always mix it up like I did!
Hope this saved you from scrolling through endless pages and that you maybe saw some great items that could make your life a little easier/better:) Come back tomorrow for a fun design post!
Love you, mean it.

IKEA’S New Pieces Are So Good They Don’t Need To Be Hacked

Full disclosure, Emily had a really great design post planned for you today but y’all, it’s been VERY busy with basically two weeks of shoots lined up (one might include some river house reveals but shhh! :)) and she understandably needed to postpone. Of course, we didn’t want to leave you without a post so we decided I’d write this one. Here’s the story – I was on Instagram the other day when I was fed an ad from IKEA. Normally, I would scroll past but I was pleasantly surprised by the pieces I saw! IKEA has always had great options (we’ve used them for countless projects) but I just feel like they are really nailing recently. So here are my favorite NEW pieces that I love and have no need to hack:)
First up, let’s talk rattan because their offerings are currently real good…

FRYKSÅS Cabinet | BILLY Cabinet
Cabinets anyone? This first all-rattan cabinet was the one that initially caught my eye. It’s perfect for a minimal neutral-toned home but also would be an awesome grounding piece in a really colorful space. Plus, texture for days! Then it’s like IKEA saw all of the DIY hackers and thought, “Let’s make this easier for them” and just installed caned doors themselves. The BILLY is a beloved IKEA staple that now comes in even more different sizes and configurations with these caned door fronts. This one also comes in another color too.

FRYKSÅS Desk | FRYKSÅS Storage Cart | SALNÖ Chair
See! So many good rattan options! I really love this simple but very special writing desk. But if you still want something practical but a bit more mobile then check out this storage cart. Even the wheels have a wood veneer! This could easily be a cute desk cart, bathroom shelf, or even a nightstand. The possibilities are endless! And yes! They have a new cool, rattan chair for under $100 each. It is recommended for indoor use only but it would look cute in any room.

GRÅMÖRT Tray | FRYKSÅS Wall shelf
But maybe just a little rattan accent is all you need! Tell me how cute this tray is at first glance and then tell me how awesome it is when you find out it’s 28″x11″…what?! That’s a BIG tray which isn’t easy to find and for only $15. WILD!! Then this little shelf is also really sweet and could truly work in almost any room. I love the idea of getting like 4 and stacking them on top of each other on your wall. Just an idea:) 0

UTSÅDD Cat house | UTSÅDD Scratching Board | UTSÅDD Dog bed
Finally (in the rattan category), IKEA is killing it in the animal decor game. How great are these beds and that scratcher?! The dog bed is for a smaller dog but they have a surprising amount of cute pet decor and toys. Including cushions

KALLAX Shelf unit | DYVLINGE Swivel Chair
Now onto some color! Well mostly green:) I think that dark green glossy cabinet is so awesome. It’s modern and cool but not too in your face or bright! Plus, you can place it vertically or horizontally. We love options! But if you do love a brighter green, I can’t get enough of this accent swivel chair. It’s giving MCM in 2024 and that corduroy is so fun. It does come in a dark grey if that’s more your speed.

So while I love the idea of keeping large furniture pieces neutral and then bringing in color through decor, for a kid’s room, BRING ON THE COLOR. This convertible crib is in that same happy green as the swivel chair and I can’t get enough. No, need to DIY your crib a fun color when IKEA has done it for you. Same goes for this daybed. This yellow is very cheerful but what’s even better is that this daybed can act as a twin (as is) or the bottom can pull out and a double mattress will happily fit. Oh, and those are real drawers for actual storage! But don’t worry, if yellow isn’t for you this piece comes in three neutral colors too.

NISSAFORS Utility cart | HOLMERUD Side Table | MITTZON Acoustic Screen
Onto the neutral-toned pieces (which I also love). This utility cart comes in a few different colors but I really love this beige tone. It’s chic and works with so many color palettes. What I also love is how IKEA made this “side table” but in all of the photos, it’s used as a sofa table (that can even wrap around). I think it looks sick!! 1000/10. Then you may be wondering why I chose an acoustic screen for one of my favorite pieces and I’ll tell you why. First off, it would be great to help divide a space (office or otherwise) and you could easily use them as mood boards or art displays. How cool would that look in the right space?!

BRÖGGAN Goblet | HÖSTAGILLE Side Plates | TESAMMANS Glasses
IKEA always has good tabletop pieces and they still do as shown above. My need for those goblets is almost too much for my heart to handle. The shape is so so good!! And if you are a person who loves color, these side plates are such a sweet and easy breezy what to add in more. Speaking of color, these glasses are perfect. I don’t think I need to say more.

HÄCKPOPPEL Decorative Bowl | VISSLAÅN Boxes with Lids
When I see a piece like this decorative bowl at IKEA, I am so impressed. It feels like a fun “risk” but is also something at a higher-end store that would easily be $125…not $20. Big fan! Then on a different note, I just love these storage boxes! They are cool and pretty and are great for bathroom or desk drawers.

NÖDMAST LED Portable Lamp | TESAMMANS Pendant Lamp Shade | BLÅSVERK Table Lamp
Onto my favorite category – LIGHTING! I think my love of lamps has been well-documented so believe me when I saw I really love these IKEA options. The color combo of that little portable cutie is perfect. And do you see in the styled photo above that the shade tilts?! 10/10. Then if you are like me that three-tiered pendant lampshade stopped me in my tracks. Vintage-inspired, great colors, and wildly cool. No notes. Oh, and want a pop of yellow in your home? Look no further than this extremely sick lamp. I love the style and the fact that it gives off ambient light. What a win. It also comes in two other colors!

LERGRYN Knitted Lamp Shade | RORKULT Wall Lamp
But if you are a neutral color lover, these are my two absolute favorites. Let’s start with this KNITTED lampshade. I’m sorry that is too cool. I’m in love with how it looks in the styled photo. The soft texture is insane and that warm glow is perfect. Then, I see you IKEA wanting to get on the Murano glass trend train with this wall sconce. Of course, this lamp is not made out of Murano glass but it’s so pretty, affordable, and gives off the vintage style I personally love most. Oh, and it’s a plug-in!!

As someone who just needed to get a piece of art framed (it was a custom size…beware of the vintage art! ;)) finding good, affordable frames is everything. We have always loved the IKEA RIBBA series, but let me tell you that these two new collections are putting up a fight. That tone of oak is so freaking pretty! I love the square option but the rectangle frame is also pretty perfect. But if you want to have a little fun, I am kinda obsessed with the thin red frame. It’s unexpected but with the right art would look truly amazing.

TONSTAD Side Table | TESAMMANS Side Table | BERGMUND Chair with Long Cover
WAIT! There are actually three more pieces of furniture I wanted to highlight. This dark brown side table/nightstand looks way more expensive than it is. It’s simple but the shape and width are great. Then on the opposite vibe, what side table is more fun than this one? The two-tone color is playful but not overwhelming and it’s a storage table too! What’s not to love? But maybe you want to shake up your dinner table and these striped slipcovered chairs are your answer. They are graphic but also classic and I just think they are so cool. Plus, for $135 that’s not terrible these days for actually special-looking dining chairs.
Well, that’s it from me today! Hope it was fun and if I inspired a weekend IKEA trip…I’m sending love and strength;)
Love you, mean it.

How To Get The Nancy Meyers Aesthetic At Home: A (Really) Deep Dive

When I first moved from my mid-city LA apartment out east to the Pasadena area, the first thing my mother asked me was “How far are you from the Father of the Bride house?!?!?” The 1991 movie that was set in the nearby town of San Marino (though it was filmed in Pasadena) has been a main character in my family’s life basically since it hit the silver screen. Before I knew anything about design, before I knew the name Nancy Meyers (who co-wrote FotB), heck, before I even turned double digits, I knew that the house from the film my mother constantly proclaimed as her favorite was aspirational, to say the least.
I can’t recall if we ever spoke of the interiors specifically, but the exterior was “dream home” status for my momma, and she compared everything to it. I grew up in a Colonial with wood siding and a front porch, and even though it didn’t *actually* look like the Banks residence, we kind of pretended like it did. We had hunter green shutters flanking all of the front windows; there was a big oak tree out front (that eventually came down after a treacherous hurricane); and the soft yellow my parents picked when they repainted in the ‘90s sort of, kind of emulated the creamy, buttery white on the famous house’s exterior (if you squinted). Let’s be real, though, no one was going to mistake our middle-class Central Florida home for it, but it made us happy, nonetheless.
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Gaby Miller (@thegabstopper)
And that’s the thing about the set design from all my favorite movies with the Nancy Meyers name attached to it: they just make you happy. Sure, the characters are great, and the script is warm and fun and sweet, but it’s the interiors of all the homes these stories take place in that leave the biggest mark.
Father of the Bride, 1991, ©Buena Vista Pictures / Courtesy Everett CollectionBefore sitting down to write this, I challenged myself to just stream-of-consciousness journal what came to mind when I thought of Meryl Streep’s kitchen in It’s Complicated, or Diane Keaton’s Hamptons home in Something’s Gotta Give. Oh and don’t get me started on just EVERYTHING in the Lindsay Lohan version of The Parent Trap. That ridiculously cozy cottage Kate Winslet’s character calls home in The Holiday? SHUT UP.
Here’s an (edited) version of what I came up with in bullet form to make it easier to follow (Jimmy Fallon does a good job of also summarizing the vibe in this hilarious music video):
Nancy Meyers interiors are less about the specific design and more about how they leave you feeling. You don’t necessarily remember the furniture or the paint color, but you can recall that you want in on that life. Looks like how a farmer’s market makes you feel ← (still think this is the best descriptor)Like you’re the type of person who eats pan-toasted sourdough with a smear of plum preserves every morning for breakfast awash in a soft glow of morning light. You definitely drink coffee out of a French press. Like fancy granola from a specialty food market in a clear plastic bag with a pretty ribbon tied around it ← (I’m not sure where I was going with this but it’s somehow evocative, right?)Laidback, understated, comfortable, well-worn, layeredWhat “coming home” should feel likeEase of styling, nothing is perfectly styledRooms have a mix of both functional and pretty things (especially the kitchens)Warm in the winter, cool in the summer ← (an actual line from Father of the Bride)Not afraid of clutter/layeringSophisticated ease. Pulled together but a tiny bit quirky but also comfortable and warmCasual and coastal without being beachyChintz?Gingham!Canisters full of grains ← (by this point I got around to referencing specific things my brain remembers seeing…more on that in a bit)If my list is any indication, these are homes that are lived in. A place where someone actually sits in the corner chair and devours a novel. A kitchen where croissants and summer-harvested fruit jams are whipped up. Books are stacked in corners and on bookshelves without worrying about what just right object can be bought to style a curated selection of coffee table books no one has ever read. They are personal to the characters living in them, and feel so real (even though they’re fake).
Screenshots of a text conversation I had with Jess while each trying to describe the Nancy Meyers aesthetic. Judge us not for our typos. We talk just as quickly virtually as we do in real life and our fingers can’t keep up.It’s giving “I’m rich, but humble” and “Yes, I hired a decorator but want people to think I did this myself.” And I think that’s what we all love about it. Jon Hutman and Beth Rubino, two of Nancy’s go-to production designers, have figured out a way to create rooms that are nostalgic without being dated. Layered without being cluttered (well, it depends on who you are, I guess). Whoever lives in these rooms cares nothing about being “cool” because the rooms aren’t cool. What they are is welcoming, inviting, and just designed enough. And while yes, these are spaces created for movie characters with obvious wealth, they’re still packaged up to feel relatable and warm, almost as if you too might someday find your secret twin sister and swap your Napa ranch for her enormous London estate.
Don your white cashmere head-to-toe outfit kids and let’s dive deeper, shall we?
The Parent Trap, 1998, ph: Mark Tillie / ©Walt Disney Co. / Courtesy Everett CollectionNancy Meyers…Two WaysI’d be lying if I said I was the first person to ever write an article about my devotion to Nancy Meyers interiors and how they make me feel. The internet is chockful of them. Just Google “Nancy Meyers aesthetic” and you’ll be scrolling endlessly. In fact, I’m not certain there’s a bottom to that search engine bucket. I’ve seen many interpretations in my day of what comprises this look and each article really focuses on one aspect of the style. Really, though, there are (at least) two: the “coastal grandma” casual beachy neutral aesthetic and the “pastoral grandma” casual English mixed with French country vibe.
Either way, I think it’s safe to say that the foundation for any Nancy Meyers-inspired room is warm neutrals and just tons of fabric (be it in curtains, pillows, throws, rugs, slipcovers, etc.). And candles. So. Many. Candles. And white lampshades with warm lightbulbs always turned on.
Father of the Bride, 1991, ©Buena Vista Pictures/Courtesy Everett CollectionBut there are not-so-subtle differences between both of the styles I outlined above. One is decidedly more frilly and layered and chintzy (Father of the Bride, the cottage from The Holiday, the London home in The Parent Trap). The other is quieter and calmer but still just as inviting (It’s Complicated, Something’s Gotta Give, the Los Angeles home in The Holiday, the Napa ranch in The Parent Trap). I guess it depends on where the female lead lives…is it more Santa Barbara or Southampton? Surrey or San Marino? Napa or London? (Who cares, I’ll take one of each.)
I did the lord’s work and went back and scanned through all of my favorite movies while I was down with the flu recently, and took stock of living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and dining rooms. I grabbed screenshots and then collaged them together to get the full scope of everything side by side.

As I’m nothing if not thorough, I compiled the “recipe” for each look below like I was assigned a book (movie) report on the production design. Here is what my summary would look like:

Clearly, plenty of crossover, but the differences are more obvious with visuals. Let’s examine two moodboards I put together using my summary of both NM styles as a guide. In truth, I could have made moodboards for every room of the house in each of these aesthetics, but this post is already long enough.
Something’s Gotta Give, 2003, ©Columbia / Courtesy Everett CollectionHow to Get the Nancy Meyers Aesthetic In Your HomeFirst up is the “coastal grandma” wing of Nancy Meyers interiors. I studied my screenshots to pull specific elements that I think all work together for the more casual, streamlined look. Of course, there’s the slipcover sofa, but I also noticed a lot of upholstered ottomans, and most of the armchairs were either a solid linen or canvas, or a subtle pinstripe. I opted for larger pillar candles and clear hurricane vases over tapers and candlesticks because it felt more “Meryl Streep in Santa Barbara.” I also quickly noticed that there were no light wood tones in sight, which I showcased below through the mahogany-finished chest of drawers. Rugs are almost always sisal or an Annie Selke-like stripe, and the quilts, while present, aren’t overly in your face. A smattering of Delft chintz via pillows is ever-present, as are elements like copper pots and white empire lamp shades.

Armchair | Ottoman | Sofa | Copper Pots | Hanging Rack | Hurricane Vessels | Table Lamp | Bed | Quilt | Throw Pillow | Chest of Drawers | Rug
On to the more layered design. Many of the elements are the same, just tweaked. The sofa is still traditional, casual and slipcovered, but the armchair has a more obvious print and pattern (I went back and forth between this blue striped option and a floral but landed here as to not go overboard). The rugs are subtle but vintage; there’s plenty of warm lighting via candles and lamps but things are skinnier and more classic. Nancy clearly has a thing for metal spindle beds in white and silver tones, which read charming cottagecore, for sure. It’s hard to not notice lots of botanical prints on the walls of the houses in the movies, and the same goes for Windsor-style dining chairs. As for the textiles, there are no obvious rules followed for pattern matching; almost as if the person living in the home just bought what they liked and that is the sole reason they go together. Quilts are almost always patchwork, and pillows are always floral.

Armchair | Trunk | Sofa | Copper Pots | Hanging Rack | Candlesticks | Table Lamp | Bed | Quilt | Throw Pillow | Art Prints | Dining Chair | Rug
The interesting thing about having gone through this deep dive exercise into an aesthetic I hold so close to my heart is that I don’t think I’d actually put any of my rooms together to look like this. I’d love to take a few weeks in the summer or winter and hunker down in a home that looks like this, sure. Make all the jam and squeeze all the fresh orange juice and have all the dinner parties, but my personal style tends to be more streamlined yet colorful. I know this because I recently swapped out my beautiful pinstripe linen duvet cover for a slate blue and white gingham percale cover, and while it sleeps like a dream, I’m not in love with it visually. I’m tempted to Nancy Meyers it up to make it work, but I also kind of think I’m better off admiring the warmth and elegance through my TV screen rather than in my actual home.
That’s the fun of design. You can mentally try on a lot of looks, dream about what it would be like to spend time in spaces that aren’t yours, maybe take a little inspiration and sprinkle it throughout, but you don’t have to go all in. Or you totally can. Whatever makes you as happy as a Nancy Meyers movie makes me.
Until next time, friends…

The Link Up: Em’s CUTE Etsy Picture Frame Mat Find, Mallory’s Pretty And Hardworking AC Unit Rec, And An Affordable Face Moisturizer Hack

Happy Sunday everyone! A full week back after a long holiday weekend is never easy but when there’s a surprise backyard refresh it eases the blow, right?? Ha. Anyway, hope this weekend has been full of rest and fun summer things. But for now, let’s just hop into this week’s links!
This week’s house tour is a brutalist gem! We know this style isn’t for everyone but once you see these photos it will be impossible to deny how special this home is. It’s also another great reminder to visit Portugal:) Go check it out here!

From Emily: How cute are these velvet mattes that I bought from Etsy?? Of course, most people don’t have pet portraits by incredible artists like Natalie Cooperman (I love them so much). Now to find the right serious but not too serious frame.
From Jess: Well, I was planning on talking about my new favorite shoes this week but instead wrote a whole post about them (and others) yesterday so go check that out here. But for an incredible giggle go watch Hannah Berner’s Netflix special We Ride At Dawn. It’s a show for the girls and NSFW but as a die are Giggler (see this podcast for reference) I am SO proud of Hannah and have already watched the special twice.
From Arlyn: In a shocking turn of events, my face has been so dry lately (a drastic change from the oil slick it tends to be in these swampy months). I had just reupped my normal, everyday moisturizer so I didn’t want to buy another one and waste this one. Instead, I bought this wonderful rosehip oil to layer underneath my moisturizer and I really, really love it. My face feels so well hydrated, not the least bit greasy (even if I get a little heavy-handed) as it absorbs so fast, and it wears great under makeup. I use it day and night and have also been rubbing it into my hair ends when needed as well as my cuticles. It’s lovely and super affordable!
From Caitlin: Ok, channeling my inner Karl (of Succession fame) here: I am OBSESSED with these wide-calf compression socks that my mom, Brenda, got me for Christmas last year! They’re not impossible to pull on, they provide the perfect level of support, and they make flying SO MUCH MORE comfortable. You know how you can feel achy or sore or tight after a flight? These have dramatically reduced my inflammation, which means I get off my plane feeling fresh and ready vs. cranky and cramped. I’ve tested them on short treks (2 hours to Portland) and long stretches (14 hours to Argentina) and I will never go back to flying in a normal sock. 3 pairs runs for about $26 and they’ll last you forever – after 7 months of testing, I can confirm that these are one of those “I should have done this sooner” purchases. (They also come in standard widths, for those of you with smaller calves – I just REALLY like this brand!)
From Gretchen: Caitlin referenced my whirlwind of a “busy week” in her AWESOME Facebook Marketplace post (did you read it? So many valuable tips from a seller’s perspective and a few thrown in from yours truly, too). Well, what started out as a wonderful 4th of July camping trip descended into emergency room madness involving an axe, my foot, and 9 stitches. Needless to say, I have been doing my best to rest and recover over at my parents’ place since the accident which (thankfully) happened closer to their home in Bend. My mom and dad are very much dinner-and-a-show kind of people, so when it came time to sit down (in an elevated, iced position for me) and decide what to watch, we took a gamble on this show called The Traitors. All I can say is we are HOOKED. I had seen it advertised a bunch but brushed it off until a friend shared just how addicting it was. And it was. Whether you enjoy reality TV or not (dad hates it and was still glued) this show will draw you in. You’ll find yourself immersed in the gameplay, yelling at the TV and talking strategy with anyone who will listen. Essentially it plays like the game Mafia, where certain contestants are selected to be Traitors, secretly “murdering” their fellow players and trying not to get caught by the Faithfuls and therefore “banished” from the game. Most of the players in the first season and ALL of the players in the second come from other reality TV shows like Survivor, Big Brother, The Bachelor, and even The Real Housewives. The drama is palpable, the challenges are tough, and Alan Cumming is a hilariously flamboyant host. I am already dying (Traitor pun intended) for the next season!
From Mallory: I moved into a vintage apartment (cute!) but it has no AC (not cute!) so I did A LOT of research on window AC units and ended up getting this one which works GREAT. It’s ultra-quiet which is really nice so you’re not listening to a wind tunnel plus it can get VERY cold. If you’re in a similar situation and you’re tired of sweating this summer snag one!!
Thanks for stopping by and see you tomorrow! xx

The Case For The Breathable Mesh Ballet Flat ( + 14 Of Our Favorites)

I’ve known for a minute that I’ve “needed” a cute throw-on-and-go flat. Yes, I have my worn-in sneakers, some cute mid-height chunky heels, and maybe two “dressy” sandals. So no, I don’t technically need anything. But look, sometimes you just want to feel put together without donning a heel or showing off your toes, am I right?? Now it’s also summer and I don’t know what the temperatures are where you live but baby it is NOT cold outside. Breathability was going to be a big factor in my ballet flat search.
Lucky for me (and maybe you) there are two ballet flat trends that killing the breathability game – the woven flat and the mesh flat. I honestly can’t get enough of either. But this past weekend I decided enough was enough and bought a pair that I’m pretty obsessed with. I will show you in a sec but first, let’s look at Emily’s current favorite pair…
The Greta Ballet Flat
Emily got these for a Madewell partnership and fell for them hard. The woven detail, that leather color, the little elastic strap to secure them, what’s not to love?! I almost got them for myself and honestly still might, but as you will soon see what I got is VERY different:) They are a little pricy at $148 but are super versatile and come in other colors.
Rodni Mesh Ballet Flats

For a cool savings of $20, I found these equally as cute but slightly more modern ones! The reviews do say they are better for a more narrow foot but how good is that shape? I also really like the slightly chunky buckle. OOff, these are on the list too…They also come in other neutral colors.
Swan Lake Gem Mesh Flats
Would you believe me if I said these were the ones I got?? Well, believe it baby because they are! No one is more surprised than me that I decided on a rhinestoned mesh flat. Well actually, a couple of weeks ago I went to a design event with a friend who was just wearing a white blouse, jeans, and the fancy Loeffler Randall version and she looked so cool, effortless, and fun! Basically my dream look. That’s when the idea was firmly planted.

So I decided to do some in-person shopping (which I now slightly regret since I could have gotten 20% off with Em’s code online…EMILY20 for those curious). But there I was, perusing the shoe section of Anthropologie, and there they were…the shoes my soul needed. Perfect little mesh flats that every time I look at them give me a serotonin boost. I wore them out of the store because I needed them on my feet ASAP! I know this style won’t be for everyone and that’s ok but if you think they might be I HIGHLY recommend them. Get ready to feel like a princess! Did I even send a picture of them to my 8 and 10-year-old baby cousins, hoping for their high praise? Yes. Have they responded yet? No, but I’m sure they’re just not currently on their iPads lol. Oh, but I did find a more affordable option too since I know these aren’t necessarily cheap.
P.S. Clearly these types of shoes are not meant for the great outdoors and probably aren’t your “walk around in all day” shoes. But they are great for parties, brunches, a quick yet stylish trip to the grocery store, etc. It’s your life so wear the sparkly shoes wherever you want!
Elsa Mary Jane Ballet Flats with Memory Foam Insole

Elsa Mary Jane Ballet Flats with Memory Foam Insole
Target for the win! These VERY similar versions are not only $30 but also have a memory foam insole. Not to mention a very pretty shape. And in even better news, they also come in a wide version. Princess sparkle shoes for all!!
Cadel Imitation Pearl Mary Jane Flat

Cadel Imitation Pearl Mary Jane Flat
But look, maybe you aren’t a gem gal and prefer the sophistication of a pearl:) I did see these in person and they are very elegant. I also just love a simple elastic strap for a true ballet flat look (and less work getting them on or off). And while I think these could be worn for literally almost any occasion, how good are these for a bride? Think bachelorette, think bridal shower for my gals who hate heels, think late-night dancing at the reception! They also come in white for the most bridal look:)
Lennox Rhinestone Mesh Flat

I do want to make sure my gals who love dark colors are represented too. These are equally as fun and are a little less “ballet” without the strap which I’m sure some of you will appreciate. The shape is beautiful and these puppies are only $40. A fun and GREAT deal.
Landon Soft Ballet Flat

Y’all!! These actually are Loeffler Randall but instead of being priced at $250, they are on sale for $100!! No, not cheap but for such a high-end brand that’s a steal. Plus these beautiful pink ladies are very versatile. Sure, they don’t have gems (lol) but that pink is just bright enough to make a little statement but soft enough to work with so many different colors. Love.
Aldan Black Sheer Mesh Ballet Flats

Aldan Black Sheer Mesh Ballet Flats
Oooo this modern flat is good. I really love where the opening hits the foot (that sounded weird but you get it). These are just wildly chic, will effortlessly take you into the warmer part of fall, and get this…are only $29! But if you love this simple look and color but want a more traditional shape these ones might be perfect for you.
Cadel Ballet Flats

Now, this is a ballet flat post so if you really want that true ballet vibe then these are it. You’ve got the elastic strap, the little bow, and the classic shape. A summer ballerina is what you shall be! These are a little pricier at $115 but they come in 6 other colors..including RED!

Swan-Lake Flat

Speaking of red, these cutie patooties are the non-gem version of the ones I purchased. They come in a bunch of colors (see the photos above). I really really love those light blue ones! I just think this is a super fun way to add color to an outfit.
Idaline

I was actually surprised at how much I loved these when I saw them. I haven’t been a pointed-toe flat gal in years but how cool would these look with a wide-leg trouser and casual tank?? Dressy but with the most summer vibe. They are just really chic and under $100. Yes, please.
Woven Ballet Flats
Sorry, it’s been a very “mesh heavy” post (if you can’t tell I’m a big ole fan) but these woven gals were another pair I saw at Anthro and really considered getting. The leather is soft, the style is very classic, and man do I love a silver shoe. Actually, I have my eyes on these silver sneakers so that was another reason why I decided to go a different direction. But if silver isn’t your vibe they also come in four other colors!
Mesh Ballet Flats

I am so happy that red shoes are having a moment and these are a great example as to why. That bold tone is GOOD and the open mesh is such a fun texture to add to an outfit. These babies are show stoppers and with that ankle strap are even cuter. Also under $100!
Embroidered Mesh Ballet Flats

You know I had to end with one more mesh option and it is taking everything in me to not purchase these. For $56 and the cutest embroidery maybe ever, how could I not be tempted!? But if the flowers are a little much for you then there are other plain colors for that same great price.
Sadly, the shoe show has come to an end but I hope you had a great time and maybe found a pair you loved if you were looking for a new flat. If you need to find me just look for my sparkle shoes:)
Love you, mean it.

The Best Things At The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (We Seriously Went Through Every. Single. Page.)

When something as big as the Nordstrom Anniversary sale comes around, it’s both very exciting (the deals!) and overwhelming (the hundreds of products to sort through!). I tend to lean more on the overwhelmed side and usually don’t take advantage of the savings (this also typically happens on Black Friday despite my desire to plan ahead). But since I’m trying to become smarter and more strategic with my spending and this sale is one of the most beloved ones of the year, I went through every page finding the best pieces that we think are awesome AND a great deal (of course I asked the team what they thought too:)) Ok, let’s go!

Single Breasted Wool Blend Reefer Coat (Sale: $160 | After Sale: $250) | Crop Utility Jacket (Sale: $100 | After Sale: $160) | Waterproof Hooded Coat (Sale: $305 | After Sale: $460)
It’s my personal belief that an olive/army green jacket should be a staple in everyone’s closet. It’s a neutral tone but a little more fun and a pretty color on basically everyone (at least I think so). Of course, there are a million different styles in which you can have this green jacket and we love the three options above. Are you kidding me with that single-breasted coat?! Tailored, chic, and $90 off!! But if you want a slightly more casual look, how cool is that utility jacket? It’s got EHD written allll over it. However, we know the rain is bound to come sooner or later so that long hooded waterproof coat is awesome and $155 off. I have one that is kind of similar in style and I love it! It makes me almost happy when the rain comes:)

Cropped Blazer (Sale: $85 | After Sale: $129) | Plaid Coat with Hooded Bib (Sale: $160 | After Sale: $240) | Walker Notch Lapel Longline Bouclé Coat (Sale: $140 | After Sale: $228)
And since we’re already talking about coats, we also loved these. Now the oversized blazer trend is still going strong but tell me this cropped cutie isn’t amazing (and a great deal). So if you love a blazer but don’t want it to be oversized this one is a great option. For a more classic long coat look that’s legit warm look no further than this plaid gal. The colors of the plaid are so pretty and warm but then you have a black quilted liner with a hood that makes it look so cool and modern. You shouldn’t have to be cold to look stylist and with this one, you won’t. But if you want to play a little more with your coat then this dusty blue number is perfect. The shape is classic but that boucle nubby fabric is so fun! Emily has had similar coats and I also loved when she wore them.

Crop Camp Shirt (Sale: $55 | After Sale: $82) | Bell Sleeve Satin Button-Up Shirt (Sale: $55 | After Sale: $79)
Now let’s go under the jacket with these two button-ups! This boxy Madewell one is a great spring/summer/early fall top. Throw it on with shorts or style it like in the photo with jeans and a boot. It also comes in a darker blue! Then I fell hard for this satin, bell cuff number. I just think it’s fun yet elegant and looks great with a pair of jeans. I have one from my mom that’s similar so I can vouch for the style:)

Alexis High Waist Ankle Barrel Jeans (Sale: $166 | After Sale: $249) | Le Jane Raw Hem Crop Wide Leg Jeans (Sale: $192 | After Sale: $288)
Ok, jeans. This is a GREAT time to get those pair of jeans you really want but can’t handle the idea of paying full price. I’m right there with you! If you’ve been curious about barrel jeans maybe these Paige ones could be for you! I love that dark wash too. Or maybe you prefer a classic wide leg but like the idea of a fun detail to mix it up. Enter these two-toned raw hem ones. I really love these and think they are the perfect fit for someone who wants something different but isn’t a big risk-taker.

Joan Now Waterproof Chelsea Boot (Sale: $140 | After Sale: $190) | Lada Chelsea Boot (Sale: $350 | After Sale: $475)| Fox Chelsea Boot (Sale: $200 | After Sale: $299)
What a sale like this is also very very good for is planning, which I why things like jackets, coats, and BOOTS are a smart get. These are the three that I really loved. The first chunky sole Chelsea boot is by the one and only Sorel. So not only do I 1000% trust the quality of these shoes and their ability to hold up to the elements, but Emily has a similar-ish pair that she absolutely loves and wears all the time. Case closed I think. For a less, wet weather-friendly option, these brown suede beauts are so freaking cute. You could easily wear these at night in the summer but really they are the ultimate fall boot. They have a slight cowboy vibe but are a little more versatile style-wise. Then lastly, we have the black leather version that’s a bit more affordable. A little cowboy, a little city, and a lot of style.

Arizona Big Buckle Slide Sandal (Sale: $120 | After Sale: $160) | Gwynn Woven Ballet Flat (Sale: $150 | After Sale: $238) | Eudora Ballet Flat (Sale: $91 | After Sale: $128)
But buying for the season at hand is also pretty great:) I had to choose Emily’s favorite sandal, the Arizona Big Buckle Slide. This version is more of an orange tone but they are equally as cute and from what I hear, COMFORTABLE. Then for my new obsession, the red flat, how sweet are these ones? The woven leather gives its simple ballet flat look a little something extra. But if you’re more of a modern dresser, then I love these light blue flats! The way it covers more of the top of your foot while still having a nice opening shape is a 10/10 for me.

Explorer Half Zip Anorak (Sale: $85 | After Sale: $128) | Sportswear Phoenix Fleece Crop Sweatshirt (no price yet)
There’s really nothing like an awesome sweatshirt for those cool early-morning walks or workouts. It’s silly but I have a more enjoyable time when I feel like I look good (and I don’t think I’m alone in that:)). So these two options are perfect for this. I love the one on the right mostly because of those cool, clean lines. Chic, right?! But then when I looked up the details it’s also lightweight and stretchy. Win! But for the Nike sweatshirt, that is a cool girl sweatshirt if I ever saw one and while I can’t see the discount yet I am VERY tempted! The crop looks cute but not tight (I will likely size up) and that zipper also adds to the coolness. I know I will strut down my street with a little more attitude in this one:)

Waffle Debut Sneaker (no price yet) | Assorted 6-Pack Originals Ankle Socks (Sale: $52 | After Sale: $78)
Continuing with Nike, I need another pair of sneakers and these are classics! Who doesn’t look good in these? No one, that’s who. Nike is just being very coy with savings so we’ll see if I decide to take the plunge. And as a proud millennial, I will continue to wear no-shoe socks and Emily truly does love her Bombas. So for anyone needing some new ones, these are great and it doesn’t hurt that you are saving $26.

’90s Denim Trucker Jacket (Sale: $65 | After Sale: $98) | Faux Leather & Faux Shearling Bomber Jacket (Sale: $180 | After Sale: $300)
Enough about what I want to add to my cart (well, actually it’s everything this post but I digress), here are two awesome casual jackets. If you don’t have a jean jacket or need a new one, snag this one. I have a similar version and love it so much. It goes with everything and you’ll have it forever. But for a slightly warmer option, how sick is this black bomber jacket?? A total classic style that will up your cool so instantly every time you wear it. I want one:)

Jo Straw Rancher Hat (Sale: $66 | After Sale: $99) | Cece Straw Woven Box Clutch (Sale: $55 | After Sale: $85)
Emily is a hat lover if you haven’t noticed by now so when I saw this hat on the sale I thought, “the people need to know!!” It’s from a company that Em loves and it’s really similar to one she bought this year. Plus it’s a great deal. Then staying in the natural woven family, I just couldn’t resist not including this little clutch. I love the summer feel and that cute ball lock at the top. Plus, it has a removable chain-link crossbody strap. A great option if you’ve been looking for a great bag.

Mini ID Locket Necklace (Sale: $90 | After Sale: $138)
Onto one of my favorite categories, delicate jewelry:) I honestly can’t get enough and have to police myself often into not buying more as the point for me is to only have a couple of necklaces so they continue to look minimal together. But if YOU have been looking for one or two, let me introduce you to this wonderful, modern locket. Yes! It’s a locket! No notes, only wishing I had more than one neck.

Teardrop Pendant Necklace (Sale: $32 | After Sale: $48)
In a similar vein, but not a locket is this little teardrop pendant. Tell me that’s not the prettiest layering necklace. And for $32??? A steal!

Large Keshi Pearl Hoop Earrings (Sale: $125 | After Sale: $188)
Organically shaped pearls have been on the rise in fashion for quite some time but these earrings are among some of my favorite pieces I’ve seen! They are elegant but modern so could be worn just during the day or to a fancy dinner. I think they are stunning.

Puffy Heart Pendant Necklace (Sale: $59 | After Sale: $89)
But if you are a silver lover will cool girl style then this is the necklace for you. Like I just insinuated, this is a COOL necklace that could easily be worn on its own or with a couple of other pieces stacked. I just love the heavy chain with the heart pendant. My friend has a similar one and I always leave her wanting my own.

Racerback Washable Silk Short Pajamas (Sale: $141 | After Sale: $188) | Washable Silk Short Pajamas (Sale: $126 | After Sale: $189) | Anniversary Stripe Long Sleeve & Short Pajamas (Sale: $97 | After Sale: $129)
Ok, I think this is the last self-serving category. I really want a set of pretty silky pajamas and I thought some of you might feel the same way! I just have two requirements – washable and no long pants. I HATE getting tangled up in silky pants as I’m trying to sleep. Absolutely a first-world problem…but not NOT annoying. So first up is that beautiful Kelly green set. I love the tank top aspect for warm nights and that color is good. But for a classic matching pj set look at this sweet light pink one. So so cute. But for the colder months, that striped set is so cool and fun! The drop shoulder and wide cuffs are details I love. Good luck to all of us in being able to decide.

Sunset View Cotton Jumpsuit (Sale: $54 | After Sale: $80) | Swim Too Deep Turtleneck Sweater (Sale: $85 | After Sale: $128)
This is called the “comfortable category” because while totally different pieces, both of them look SO comfortable. People LOVE this style of jumpsuit and I thought what better time than to grab one in the summer? Wear it now with a tank around town, then when fall comes throw on a cute long-sleeved top and cardigan and you are set. But if you are looking for a great slouchy sweater, this one is it. It comes in other colors and is from Free People. In my personal opinion, Free People has THE BEST oversized but cute sweaters hands down. Normally, they are pretty pricey but at least here you get $43 off!

SinglePass Curl X 1.25″ Ceramic Extra-Long Barrel Curling Iron (Sale: $100 | After Sale: $150) | Dyson Supersonic
Hair Dryer (Sale: $344 | After Sale: $430) | Hinoki Shower Gel (Sale: $50 | $72 Value)
It’s beauty time baby! If you want a nice curling iron, this is a great one, and $50 off! Then if you’ve been really wanting to try the Dyson hair dryer and have early access as a member you can save almost $100 dollars. WOW! My hairdresser does say it’s really freaking good. Oh, I just wanted to add in this body wash because it’s my absolute favorite (I’ve tried others and it still is #1 in my book). It’s expensive this one is a bigger bottle so for $12 more you get double the product.

Studio McGee Best Sellers & Pura 4 Smart Fragrance Diffuser & Refill Set (Sale: $80 | After sale price $118) | Capri Blue Volcano & Pura 4 Smart Fragrance Diffuser & Refill Set (Sale: $84 | After sale price $126)
Ok, none of us have smelled the Studio McGee diffuser scents but they are best sellers and I trust Shea’s taste. I typically love her Target candle scents so I can only imagine these are even better:) Then Volcano is the famous Anthropologie scent that almost everyone loves so I don’t think you can go wrong with this one either. I have a dream of having a home that everyone loves so my next step is a diffusing like these!

3-Piece Rectangular Ceramic Baking Dish Set (Sale: $70 | After Sale: $120) | Signature 7.5-Quart Enameled Cast Iron Brazier (Sale: $290 | After Sale: $462) | Wonder Oven
6-in-1 Air Fryer & Toaster (Sale: $146 | After Sale: $195)
A sale also means it’s the best time to get the fancy cookware you’ve been saving for! Staub and Le Creuset are top-of-the-line classics and look so pretty! But $462 is A LOT for one pot so saving $172 is pretty awesome if you have your heart set on a Le Creuset. Same goes for the Stab baking dishes. These puppies are almost 50% off! But if you want A GREAT small appliance that will be the hardest worker in the kitchen, take a look at Our Place’s, Wonder Oven
6-in-1 Air Fryer & Toaster. It does SO much, looks great, and is $50 off. It’s tempting me!!

Waffle Cotton Throw Blanket (Sale: $111 | After Sale: $149)
Finally, we have one bedroom item and it’s a beautiful one. This throw blanket is a gorgeous green color (but also comes in cream) and as people who have worked with Parachute a lot, the quality is so so good. It’s simple and pretty perfect.
We’ve come to the end! Hope this was fun and that maybe we saved you searching time and some hard-earned money. Have a great weekend but also we’ll, of course, see you tomorrow.
Love you, mean it.

Our Tried And True Tips On How To ACTUALLY Sell Your Things On Facebook Marketplace (Even The Best Day To Post!)

Five too-short weeks ago, I spilled the beans that my long-term boyfriend would be permanently relocating to LA. We’d been commuting back and forth between coasts for about two and a half years, so this was exciting for both of us! Less exciting? Downsizing his entire apartment as quickly as possible. There was a bright spot, though: we were able to fund an entire cross-country move by selling the pieces that he’d planned to donate or recycle, and it only took four days. Our secret weapon? Facebook Marketplace.
But as it turns out, I’m not the only lil’ Facebook Marketplace addict on the team! Gretchen and I got to talking earlier this week – she’s also a vintage lover (have you seen her old apartment on Apartment Therapy, or her 2024 bedroom makeover?! She has an unbelievable eye!) and we realized we both had some helpful selling tips to share. So whether you’re looking to offload a one-off piece, make a few extra bucks for your emergency fund, or launch a full-blown selling side hustle, our best advice for selling fast and earning big on Facebook Marketplace are below. You ready to free up some space and earn some dollar bills?

Embrace The Bulk UploadThe number one critique I hear about selling on Facebook Marketplace is that it’s a clunky process and that the time spent doesn’t always justify the earnings. And honestly, until recently, I would have agreed with you! But God bless the Meta PM who dreamed up the newly-introduced Bulk Upload tool, which allows you to share 10 items in the time it formerly took to post one listing. It’s intuitive and easy. FINALLY.
…and until last week, I had no idea. When I posted a handful of lightly used mixers, air purifiers, and Instant Pots for $15-$25, I expected that I’d be taking them to Goodwill later that week. (My experience to date had been furniture- and decor-centric, so this was my first time dipping a toe into other types of home goods.)
The reality? I received hundreds of messages, the items were picked up within hours, and we found ourselves with a couple hundred bucks that I never anticipated. (If you’ve also needed to totally move out of an apartment in 100+ degree weather, I’m sure you can imagine that we were more excited by the hour-by-hour inventory reduction. Our buyers scored great deals and we earned a welcome break from the manual labor. Win/win!)
Put In Some Styling Effort
from gretchen!“Good lighting, a clean backdrop, and a thoughtfully styled shot can make all the difference,” says Gretch. “I believe that decent photos are truly what make or break your FBMP listing.” She’s right! A few more of her expert photography tips:
Always aim to style or stage the piece in a well-lit space with minimal to no clutter (read: mess) in the background. Often this means playing musical chairs with my possessions to get the shot, but I find it’s usually worth the extra trouble. Include both styled and plain shots of the item – meaning if I’m selling a little side table, I might position it next to an armchair and style it with a coaster, a mug, and a book up top, while making sure that the table itself remains the focus of the photo. Anything you can do to highlight the piece’s functionality or the way it might look in their space will help the buyer visualize it themselves. But there’s a balance. Too many items on the side table might make the piece feel too “used” or like you’re trying to hide some kind of damage. On the other hand, using photos of a table totally empty without any styling or context doesn’t always invite the buyer in. I like to have a mix of both, so they can see the piece dressed up and dressed down.Represent the item as clearly as possible. Non-blurry photos are a must and it’s important to photograph the piece you’re selling so that color and scale ring true. If you can’t seem to nail that with photography, you can make up for it in your description. No Pets
CUTE pup but makes you worry about hair and odor. but what’s more confusing is that is a post selling the rug and not the chair. I love my pets. You love your pets! But you know who doesn’t love pets? The buyers on FBMP. I know the picture of your cat on the rug is adorable. I know you love the shot of your dog lazing on the sofa. Your pets are sweet lil’ babies who should, if anything, increase the sales price! How lucky your buyer is to grab a piece that was once graced by the loving presence of your tiny animal companion!
But if you want to get asking price, leave the feline and canine shots on Instagram. It sucks, but it’s true. When buyers see pets in your photo, they assume the piece is going to have fur, odor, or damage. It doesn’t matter if the rest of the photo is immaculate – you’re just going to set yourself up for a headache.
Shoot The Imperfections

from gretchen!“If the piece you’re selling does have imperfections, make sure to show them,” Gretch advises. “Take up-close photos of the damage and call it out in the description. Honestly is best and buyers will respect your transparency.”
But share more imagery of the good parts. If there are 4 dings on a dresser, have at least 5 photos of the piece looking great. Price is perception, you know? Make it clear that the item has been loved, but that it still has a long life left to live. Gretchen agrees that more photos are better, too: “I don’t think you can have too many photos. As long as each image is showing a different angle or a different function or a defect, the more the merrier.”
If You Have the Box, Shoot ItAre you the type to store boxes for electronics or appliances? You’re in luck – your items will sell faster. I can’t tell you why, but I can tell you that it’s (anecdotally) true, 100% of the time. I don’t know if the box implies that the item is newer, or if people just like having boxes, or perhaps there’s a magical third reason I haven’t considered? But in my experience, a photo of the box significantly expedited the selling process, EVERY SINGLE TIME. (I feel like Paul Rudd in Anchorman right now. You just have to trust me on this one, I guess.)
Video Generates More Listing ViewsListings that include a video get preferred treatment in the algorithm AND they’re more helpful for the buyer. Think about your own purchasing habits: would you rather buy a sofa with one photo or a sofa with 10 photos and a full video? ~20-30 seconds is the seller’s sweet spot – walk around the piece! Get close to any cool details! Lift cushions or open drawers, if you can! This additional context often makes the difference between a save and a sale.
Pick The First Photo Carefully“Consider that the main photo is usually the first thing noticed as a buyer scrolls through the FBMP feed,” says Gretchen. “It’s typically cropped to a square, so make sure your first photo is fairly pulled back and that the item is centered in the frame. Better if it’s visually interesting!”
This is one of the most common mistakes I see – folks unintentionally select a close-up shot or a photo of the back of an item as the first photo. To avoid the same fate, always click the photo you’d prefer as your cover photo first!
Include A Screenshot, If Possible
seller photo | west elm website photoIf you’ve recently purchased something, it doesn’t hurt to include a screenshot of the item on the retailer’s website. It can be a helpful anchoring point! (Bonus points for including a direct link, so your buyer can price out the tax + shipping savings for themselves.)
For a vintage or antique piece, Gretch suggests, “try searching your own image with Google Lens to see if it’s sold for higher on 1stDibs, Chairish or eBay. If it is, I’ll include these screenshots in my listing to show them it’s a great deal.” (Side note: if you sell a lot of vintage and antiques, sign up for a LiveAuctioneers or Invaluable account – they make it super easy to look up recent sales prices!)
Jazz Up The Description
from gretchen! You know how they say that “a picture’s worth a thousand words”? THEY LIED. No one wants to buy your listing based on the photos alone, tragically enough. You’re going to need to compel any potential buyers with your words! And now that Gretch has helped you nail the perfect product photos, here’s how she thinks about writing her own FBMP descriptions.
Your pictures should speak for themselves, but it’s always nice to describe what potential buyers are looking at, especially anything that might add value or piqué interest. For example, if the little side table I’m selling is made of real wood, I’ll say so. Better if I know what kind of wood. If I can date the piece, and rightfully call it vintage or antique, I will. And if I once loved the piece but “it just won’t fit in my new place” I’ll say that. I like to think a one-sentence backstory to the item builds trust with a potential buyer.Measure your item and include dimensions in the description. You could also include them in the photos with a tape measure, but regardless, someone is going to ask for dimensions.Specify how you’d like to make the transaction (cash or Venmo, pick up or drop off) and roughly what part of town to meet in. Usually, my descriptions end up a short paragraph or two, but I find it’s better to answer any questions that might pop up before they do.Give It A Good Title

from gretchen! This matters, but it won’t make or break your sale. (That algorithm is kinda like magic – it can suggest things based on similar images, not just titles. So if your buyer has actively been searching and saving “campaign dressers” and you list your piece as “vintage dresser with brass,” the image recognition will still serve up your listing to the right person. Pretty wild, right?
But you still want to make it easy. I like the following formula:
Condition + Color and/or Material + Item Type + Details
This might end up reading like “like new green velvet armchair with piping” or “vintage lucite and glass round coffee table (4′ across).” They’re not all-encompassing, but they capture the gist. Gretchen agrees. “Use descriptive words in your title but get to the point. Think of what is the most searchable, but accurate.”
There’s No Harm In Starting High, But Don’t Expect Market Value
Screenshot
Screenshotfrom gretchen! The good news: you can make A LOT OF MONEY on FBMP. The bad news: you can make A LOT OF MONEY, but typically only on very specific items.
You know that Chairish/1st Dibs/eBay pricing you highlighted in your listing earlier? Unfortunately, that type of shopper isn’t going to pay those prices on FBMP. Chasing that market value here is a recipe for disappointment.
My simple rule of thumb: if I bought a piece new and it’s still in good shape, it’ll sell on FBMP for 40%-60% of the original retail price. If I bought a vintage piece and it’s in similar condition, it’ll sell on FBMP for 80-120% of the original retail price. To provide yourself with some negotiating wiggle room, set your price 20% higher than the target amount you hope to earn.
Double Check ItBefore hitting post, DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve clicked on someone’s listing and after seeing two pics of the items, photos of their family reunion or their lunch fill out the rest of the gallery,” says Gretch. “If you do accidentally include an incorrect listing photo, you can always go back and edit the post later.”
Consider The TimingGretch and I are 100% aligned on the best day to post: Thursday. (It’s also the best time to drop the price or renew a listing, in my experience.) Anecdotal evidence: on June 27, I listed Dennis’ end tables, sofas, chairs, appliances, rugs, and lamps – 65% of it was picked up by Saturday afternoon. THURSDAY ROCKS.
“It gives people enough time to zone in on a piece before the weekend and is close enough to make solid plans for a faster pickup,” Gretch explains.
Educate Yourself Before RespondingMy tip: “Is this still available?” is the default message that Facebook sends to sellers. When you write “I WILL NOT RESPOND IF YOU ASK IF IT’S STILL AVAILABLE, IF IT’S UP, IT’S STILL AVAILABLE” on the listing. It comes off as obnoxious and out of touch. Your buyers don’t want to bother you if you’re already in talks, and it takes 3 seconds to hit the automatic responses of “Yes, are you still interested?” or “In talks. I’ll let you know.” Just chill out and like…be normal, I guess? Yeah, some inquiries don’t result in sales – but if you’re not unnecessarily aggressive in your description, you’ll find a buyer way faster!
Gretch’s tip, for the web-weary: Beware of scammers. Never give your phone number out and always check the buyer’s profile. Usually, if the profile was created in the same year, it’s a scam.
(Full disclosure: I use/suggest that my buyers use Lugg for all furniture purchases, which usually requires them to get my phone number and address. After selling for almost a decade, I have a good instinct here as to when this information can safely be revealed – and you’ll develop one as well! – but if anyone freaks you out, end the transaction immediately. It’s not worth your safety!)
Have A Plan Of Action“Know your plan of action if you end up with a ton of interest. I usually go with first come, first serve, but will often adjust based on who’s responding to me the fastest or seems the most genuinely interested,” Gretch says. I agree!
If your buyers are planning to pick up, your item, I normally lead with a nearby intersection or landmark. “We’re by Trolley Square – I’ll shoot you the address tomorrow morning once we confirm the meeting time” or “We’re 2 minutes from Wilshire and Normandie, let me know when you’re about to head out for the exact address” is totally acceptable!
Zelle And Cash Are Okay; Venmo Is Dicey; PayPal And Checks Are BADAccepting money from strangers on the internet can be confusing. A handy guide, based on my years of practice:
Zelle: Once the funds are in your account, they’re yours. You still need to be mindful of scammers here – anyone who asks for money back or who tests the waters with a small payment first does not have your best interests at heart – but Zelle doesn’t claw back payments in the way that other institutions may. Cash: Cash is cash! An easy thumbs up here. Venmo: While I’ve never had a problem with personal payments sent on Venmo, you can’t control your buyer. If they mark “turn on for purchases,” they can request a refund after pickup which means that they’ll bring your item home for $free.99. If this gives you anxiety, avoid Venmo. PayPal: Venmo’s parent company has the same deal, with much stronger buyer protections. This is the scammer’s pickup-then-chargeback haven, and you will be left holding the bag. DO NOT ACCEPT MONEY VIA PAYPAL, OKAY?Checks: They’re going to be fake, and you’re going to be the one who gets in trouble. Avoid!!! An Annoying Buyer Is Going To Be AnnoyingYou know that buyer who sends a million messages, or asks a litany of questions that have already been answered in the description, or who won’t stop lowballing you, or who flakes, or who is generally just a pretty terrible person to deal with? They’re going to be that way during and after the sale, too. It’s not worth your sanity! You can always bow out respectfully. The block button can be your friend. I have no bad FBMP experiences because I take steps to stop them before they start, you know?
As you’re concluding this tiny novel, Dennis and I will be enjoying our first full day back in LA (we landed just before midnight last night after our original flights were delayed. Phew!). Selling on Facebook Marketplace gave us the financial wiggle room to afford this move comfortably while keeping stuff out of landfills – what could be better?
And a million thank yous to the genius Gretchen Raguse, who is a REAL TROOPER and a thoughtful, smart FBMP seller. (If you guys think I had a busy week, just WAIT til you hear about hers.) Til next time… xx
