Piobaireachd playing thinking

Hi 😊 Ma,

I think I'm into setting further goals for both Piping and Piano per
Guidelines for practicing a musical instrumenthttp://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm(& esp. http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm)

Items 2&3 .... :) (You with Jean Thomas and music making together in your cottage?) Giving a piping lesson soon too 🙂
Love, Scott

Hi Taylor,
See you in 5 or 7 minutes, and these are for your consideration after today's meeting. Are they a unique style of piping, unique-to-the-great-John Burgess?

and compared with Stuart Liddell's fast remarkable light music, esp.

Still looking for a Crunluath Fosgailtch piece (since Lament for the Viscount of Dundee isn't this) and per the Yellow Tutor.
Seeking too a Crunluath Fosgailtch movement piece even from PM Donald MacLeod's Tutorials for future reference for you in learning (since Tutorials are so helpful).

Cheers, Scott

Thanks, Scott! Giving The Lament for Mary MacLeod a listen now.

Looks like Neil Clark has a tutorial for the Crunluath Fosgailte in the video below as an excerpt from The Little Spree.

Taylor,
Regarding - Light Music - Ceol Beag - here's the tune "Duncan Johnstone" played by two greatest pipes, John Burgess and Stuart Liddell -
John Burgess playing beautifully expressive Light Music - Duncan Johnstone / Farewell to Nigg
https://youtu.be/0yS1JoEgqug

Duncan Johnstone - Hornpipe, Train Journey North - Hornpipe, Jig of Slurs - Jig, Clumsy Lover - Jig
https://youtu.be/DEWajsY6nok

As I think I've mentioned, I studied in a workshop in Glasgow in ~1981 with Duncan Johnstone (on a ZIS stipendium, while studying in Munich for a year at the time, with further blog entry details - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/10/turquoise-parrot-neophema-pulchella.html ) ... Duncan Johnstone was an amazing piper, & jovial, very Scots, Glaswegian (big gut), a character (may have played in greatest pipe bands, may have been in the police too) ... and was somehow brilliant ... and composed many great tunes of Light Music in particular I think. (And we've learned The Jig of Slurs, in the CoP Blue Tutor, Vol 3.  which Stuart Liddell plays so quickly above too:)
Wanna work on playing the jig "Duncan Johnstone" one of these weeks? And re-visit some Blue Tutor tunes - Mason's Apron (here's Stuart again twice - https://youtu.be/nsWSrDX7zrs and https://youtu.be/hYTK0vaVBHc re learning from LIddell and Burgess) in particular among a few ?
"The Little Spree" Piobaireachd ("The wee run amok" - could we rename this, and even re a kind of freedom, or also going berserk too - re the Scottish ?) sheet music to come, as well as some piano recordings of "The Flowers of Quern" for the D chanter (in the key of G, with one sharp)
Cheers, Scott
PSPer what we talked about last night, Daivd Hinson is the Auburn Univ Architect professor I know from Cuttyhunk (but I know Annie better, from my teens growing up there in summers). Please say hi to David and Annie Hinson if you or April ever run into them at Auburn University. (They're great:).

crunluath Fosgailte (where fosgailte means OPEN)

TAYLOR,
Following up on the Piobaireachd (Pibroch) fingering movement at the end of the College of Piping's Yellow Tutor, vol. 4 -

This which you sent is interesting esp.

Following up too on  ...
Fosgailte (where fosgailte means OPEN) regarding
fosgailte crunluath a mach cycle ?

and TAORLUATH's
taorluath fosgailte in parallel ...

Regarding again, The Little Spree (Piobaireachd)
While I see the word 'fosgailte' mentioned here ...
The Little Spree (Piobaireachd)https://www.pipesdrums.com/wp-content/docengines/41641E1E764F4FE3A1E66634ED0CC21E.pdf
... it's regarding the taorluath Fosgailte (where Fosgailte means OPEN) so let's explore playing perhaps playing both the Taorluath fosgailte and The Crunluath Fosgailte here in LIEU of their a Mach variations ... And as a way to learn the fosgailte movement. What do you think?

Searched on the little spree piobaireachd crunluath fosgailte
found too with focus on fosgailtehttp://www.altpibroch.com/learning/modern-traditional-piper/taorluath-and-crunluath-styles/

and with mention of fosgailte crunluath a mach cycle
https://digital.nls.uk/early-gaelic-book-collections/archive/81165141?mode=transcription
So shall we explore the Urlar of the The LIttle Spree next week, and perhaps head in the direction of
fosgailte crunluath a mach cycle

as an experiment even, and in learning too the CoP Yellow Tutor Vol 4 Crunluath fosgailte potentially as we choose to play it in certain Piobaireachds (and as we think this through further)?
Me thinks Piobaireachd is, metaphorically for Scots-identity pipers,Scottish 'bodymind' computer code :)
Seeking to develop email threads with related resources too here :)

Gordon Duncan - piping creativity learning

Played by Gordon Duncan (who also expanded the possibilities of what's possible on the Great Highland Bagpipe rock and roll-wise) ...

And in a new Gordon Duncan thread ...
And here's a full album, and an interesting conception of piping, as the circular breath (but the album )Gordon Duncan - The Circular Breath - 1997
https://youtu.be/89unNbATg8k
but it's not Gordon Duncan's album Thunderstruck on the GHB ...

(was sort of inspiring too for my SSP album ... "Honey in the Bag" if I were to record it to a physical CD ...)
Scotthttps://scottmacleodhoneyinthebagscottishsmallpipesbagpiping.bandcamp.com/
This piping has a lot of R&R influence - both AC /DC, energy-wise, and moving ...
Thunderstruck-Gordon Duncan
https://youtu.be/_EwDlUHoDFo

Am curious about R&R energy and Piobaireachd ... could be interesting exploration ... and re your moving to Georgia (identity and culture-wise too ... while keeping in mind one's career, eg becoming a teacher + :)) ... bit of a trip to say the least :)

PM Stuart Liddell piping learning

Taylor,
The two most wise or thoughtful creative bagpiping videos I've seen (both by Stuart Liddell) - wisdom in bagpiping?

https://youtu.be/p1GR8qQulx4

The Ascension of Inveraray & District Pipe Band - 2004-2013

Both are so forward planning oriented, and even philosophical in a sense ... re thinking where one's heading with piping (inner bodymind) harmoniousness music ... as well ...

Both are here ...  https://www.stuartliddell.com/media ...and ... Appreciating too his long-time alliance with amazing drummer DS Stephen McWhirter who is here too - https://www.stuartliddell.com/media

(Are these Stuart's or the web site manager's choices of Stuart's best video media to add for outreach and inspiration and performance too ?)

As a follow up on learning Ceol Beag (Light Music) from  Stuart Liddell, here again are ...

Re Stuart Liddell's 'wisdom' am going to watch his Glenfiddich Piobaireachd videos for what I've observed before as his very steady or still-minded Piobaireachd meditation, perhaps as a feedback loop from the drones and his chanter back into his bodymind / brain :)

EdX~WUaS impasse?

Dear Anant (and Larry, Chairman of the WUaS Board and CFO, MIT '69 ALUMNUS),
Greetings and I hope this email finds you well. (Am glad WUaS just today completed filling out the 2020 tax form for the WUaS Corp in CA with regard to the following, and thanks to Larry Viehland for this).
With this as a main goal in edX-WUaS partnering -
'Apply to matriculate for free CC-4 OCW BA/BS and PhD degrees taking edX courses @WorldUnivAndSch ~ http://worlduniversityandschool.org (with http://ocw.mit.edu) & Planning major universities in ~200 countries' official (& #WUaSwikiSchools in ALL 7,139) LANGUAGES https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States ~ '

I'm glad WUaS's edX representative Matthew wrote on Tu 4/6/21 -
"Hello Scott,
Thank you for your note. To be more clear, I was referring to our earlier conversations in September 2020 and the changes to our payment structures since that time. We are standing by to support WUaS, however, we are not able to move forward with any academic partnerships and legal agreements without funding to support WUaS students.
Best regards,Matthew "

However, in our emailing recently, the communications from edX regarding the edX-WUaS partnering seem to be changing and contradictory with each email. WUaS continues to miss opportunities (and over months too) for launching and letting our prospective students plan to matriculate (now on 9/1/21, having missed our May 1, 2021 goal for offering preliminary courses via edX to our matriculating PhD and Bachelor degrees students). So I'm reaching out to you as edX CEO to seek to prepay for our WUaS students and thus our edX-WUaS legal partnering documents please too.
If WUaS were to prepay edX for our prospective ~5 WUaS students (for both PhD and Bachelor degree programs, taking a first WUaS year of edX courses, toward WUaS degrees) with our edX-WUaS agreed-upon $349 per student per year for unlimited edX courses, could we please receive these documents soon (and since WUaS doesn't have $50,000 to pay for an edX dashboard integration into WUaS G-Suite for Education)? As you may know CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch is planning online major universities, offering Bachelor, PhD, Law, MD and IB high school degrees, in each of all ~200 countries in their official and main languages, and also wiki schools for open teaching and learning for speakers of all 7,139 known living languages, - and, brainstorming-wise, to code for all 7.8 Billion people on the planet as wiki teachers and learners (and for a number of other reasons too) - so the growth potential for edX is enormous.
Reimbursement to WUaS in WUaS G-Suite for Education, from ~200 countries' COUNTIES (with parallels to the Olympics) for Creative Commons-4 MIT OCW-centric WUaS degrees is the business plan, - for students initially taking edX courses toward WUaS degrees, from which WUaS would subsequently pay edX $349 per student per year for unlimited edX courses for WUaS PhD degrees and 4-year Bachelor degrees. This is the understanding edX's Matthew and I have been operating with for many months, and which WUaS is inquiring about in this email. Could we please write these understandings into our WUaS-edX legal partnering documents regarding these - "three main categories: 1. Billing information, 2. Integration and Access Configuration 3. Learner data privacy" - this week?
Since WUaS may only have at this point about 5-10 prospective PhD and Bachelor degree students, from the USA, India, Morocco and Indonesia, for these WUaS programs, but which number WUaS thinks will grow dramatically, when WUaS can receive an edX registration URL, something like - https://authn.edx.org/register (with Legal disclaimers on our WUaS edX registration page) - and further develop a professional website in Google Sites, in signing these legal documents, how might WUaS best get these edX-WUaS partnering documents in the next few business days?
Thank you for your timely action in this situation, Anant, and regarding further edX-WUaS partnering developments and legal documents. WUaS is seeking to let our prospective WUaS PhD and Bachelor students know soon with a link (like - https://authn.edx.org/register in WUaS G-Suite for Education) that they can apply to register to matriculate September 1, 2021 for free-to-students' CC-4 OCW-centric degrees taking edX courses. Thank you.
Sincerely, Scott- https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/04/synchiropus-splendidus-32021-wuas_1.html -

13 yrs ago (Happy Easter), Art, Culture, not far from field site Harbin Hot Springs in Lake County CA

Dear David,
These Google photos just popped up ... (Not sure who, how or why? ... AI-wise) :)

13 yrs ago (Happy Easter), Art, Culture, not far from field site Harbin Hot Springs in Lake County, California - CALIFORNIA !

Lots of cultural insights ...
An Andrew Carnegie Library in Lakeport, CA in 2008 or so ...
The lake from Lakeport CA
ART exhibit with Harbin friends and artist Michelle Monreal (and Harbin Blue Room Cafe barista) ...and her art (which was exhibited in the Blue Room Cafe - and re the vision of a woman artist ... Coming through time, with her French last name, - and seeming well being in one of these pics - as artist, and re 'vision' or 'envisioning')
The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas school where Harbin acquaintance and Harbin kid Lacy Rose Prehn Lackey (and who went to Reed College and studied Chinese further there) went to high school, and learned Chinese ... And as a cultural aside, Lacey's Mom Ann Prehn, old hippy, was editor of the Harbin Quarterly and at Harbin Pubs, for decades (and knows well Harbin founder dysfunctional Ishvara aka Bob Hartley ... Re messed up male-female relationships too - and psychologically :(  )

Nearby Grace Hudson Museum

(Even the role of the state of California is implicit here in many of these pics)

Interesting JOLTS culturally re Lake County culture, and even well-being, how cultural institutions have navigated in a 'rough' world ... In seeing these photos ...
Not sure who the 2 'aliens' in first pic are in front of the Andrew Carnegie Library Museum are in Lakeport (which I've only visited a few times).
Thanks for coming up to Harbin with me many years ago :) ... California  culture 'weirds' people out ... Or is 'out there'? :)
Back to a little Ethnographic thinking :)
Happy Easter (culturally too :)
Fondly, Scott

Hi Pin (Sid),

Happy Easter! How are you? (I looked up the Easter Oratorio by JS Bach, but then AI, I think, popped up this beautiful JS Bach piece

https://youtu.be/pTBooio3h9U "J. S. Bach - Sonatas & Partitas For Lute" which I've listened to many times, and is transformative of my 'neurophysiology' making me 'purr' like a cat repeatedly and at times ... interesting effects of information technologies on brains ... and how and is this even learnable, and could machine learning help? :)

After hiking yesterday on the spectacular Seaview trail nearby in Tilden Park yesterday and then driving around Berkeley a bit, I came upon the Thornburg village - a French Normandy village from 1927 very close to campus on Spruce Street near Hearst Av. I wasn't able to find it in Google Street View with TIME SLIDER however. Students now rent rooms in this Thornburg village - but in a touristic moment, nice to have stumbled on these visually different historical Berkeley buildings - and so close to campus, and quite old. Perhaps we can go have a look at this next time you are visiting.

I went then to find where we had met in the cafe on 2017 when you wonderfully came to visit

... on Euclid Ave near Hearst Av, but the cafe was gone! What? And when you visited what was that Greek cafe called where we met and had something to eat? (See pics -

"Pin Siddartha Mazumder Mary Scott MacLeod and cousin of Pin Saumitra aka Gubito and wife Nefeli cafe 11 Nov 2017.jpg"

- and which I also just sent you through Google Photos and your parents and everyone). Was it called Nebuchadnezzar's? Nope, and was it the Coronavirus pandemic that closed it? (No also probably).

After some Google searching I found its name was Nefeli's cafe and it apparently closed in 2019 - https://www.dailycal.org/2019/01/28/nefeli-caffe-closes-doors-after-26-years-merges-with-va-cafe/ - and the way I found it was to come back to a larger screen computer, and look in Google Street View with TIME SLIDER of all things / 'places' - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hearst+Ave+%26+Euclid+Ave,+Berkeley,+CA+94709/@37.8753716,-122.2602304,3a,75y,265.56h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s6n7d74UJ7JW3D857Aw7efg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!4m5!3m4!1s0x80857c216365ebb1:0x930f324402c19b2b!8m2!3d37.8751149!4d-122.2601603 - and slide back to a year when the cafe where we met might have been there, and where I could also read the shop's signs in Street View. What an amazing potential tool for historical research especially (and regarding my actual-virtual Harbin ethnographic project too)!!

'Twould be amazing to create a realistic virtual earth for history -

So my little Berkeley adventure after an Easter day hike led to revisiting your visit ... and your coming to visit in Canyon 94516 too ... so Happy Easter and I hope you're having a good week (Further Easter greetings in blog today ... after AI, I think, in Google Photos, popped up some Lake County, CA, near Harbin Hot Springs' pictures, including one pic of a Andrew Carnegie library in Lakeport, CA or all places ... and also regarding a realistic virtual earth for Easter celebrations, and Easter egg hunts with even the computer game Pokemon Go with its use of Google Street View ... and potentially with its Augmented Reality, and for walking outside ... and even for ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy :)

Fondly,

Hi Ma, Pin, Larry, Ed, Tym, re-sending this email I sent my mother on 4/1/21 -

Ma,
Thanks for your good thinking - re learning German further, and UU Church of Kensington-Berkeley. A woman about 25 years old, dark hair, tall, thin, walked up the little path near the bench yesterday evening after we talked, coronavirus mask on, spandex too, and a few minutes later walked down mask off - not quite as pretty as I'm drawn toward (but could she have Scottish background?) ... And is somehow a network communicating, - regarding my seeking a life partner, and possibly UU context-wise ? (...since you and Dad married in the UU Church in Cincinnati and I'm a little familiar with its UU culture too, albeit just a little).

Peter Bothe (friend in Bremen, with whom I've done much online together) replied to an email a few days ago - suggesting starting a Stammtisch (where Harbin had one too) - a community conversation table (Virtually' here at first) -  and I've sent out some invitations to (all) native German speakers for Sat 4/10, and have heard back from 3 people including Peter already who RSVP-ed. Sympaticos all too perhaps - or sympatico-oriented as people, in their cultural code ? There might be a cultural affinity. Perhaps. It will be mostly in German (and partly for me to improve my German). Had thought to inquire about hosting it out of the UU Church even, virtually, but think eventually a cafe with food - like Cal's International House cafe in Berkeley - would be good/better ... And for an experiment in an Actual-Virtual Stammtisch even ...
"Go placidly among the noise and the haste and remember what peace there may be in silence" (https://www.desiderata.com/desiderata.html). As I continue to innovate here, self-quarantine wise too, I am a little unsettled at night at times and appreciate this poem's 'source code' even ...WUaS is coming along, and may take a big step further today, as are piping and piano playing, and writing too ... But am wondering how to realize a kind of cultural settledness and centeredness that might parallel my teaching yacht club on Cuttyhunk as head instructor and organizing the talent show in 1979, with community, now in 2021, and in the strange land of the SF Bay Area in a time of quarantine due to coronavirus pandemic.
Appreciating the cultural resources of German identity and thinking, re settledness and reasoning too, where American culture seems more rootless, mobile, mixed up ... How to learn from this, and even to develop for myself American 'consciousness' that is centered, reasoning and even cultivable, or teachable too ... Also by a far-reaching university context - WUaS - (eg in teaching, in psychiatry, in its psychology as academic knowledge discipline, in its Yoga even too perhaps?, in its approaches to science and knowledge, but for individuals, diverse, as they learn, develop their careers, get degrees, wiki teach and learn +)... in its ethics (and morality) too ...
A lovely wife and life partner? Remunerating others to help grow World Univ & Sch? Writing more books, and making more musical albums, but with a sense of wondrous or wonderful community - instead of some isolation. Am a social being, as I wrote to you and Peter (who has a bit of positive father energy & thinking in him for me, albeit who is not a father - yet???) recently here http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/03/black-forest-germany-greetings-from-sf.html?m=0 - too. ... (but the SF BAY AREA is strange in these regards for me)
It was nice to talk with you last night, and good to walk to the UU Church too ... Could be good to take a kind of long view in all of the above, and culturally too eg re UU culture, Berkeley culture, German language culture, and with genetic longevity and aging reversal even on the horizon - AAABhttps://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1377069884505432074?s=19 - and regarding meditation culture too ... Heading to have a wee sit in meditation 🙂 now 🙂
Love, ScottWriting culture and family thinking culture are good cultures to learn from too :)

Re messed up male-female relationships too - and psychologically:)
 Grace Hudson Museum

Scottish Small Pipes' D chanter

Hi Taylor,

I'm sending two further tunes for the D chanter to play around with - one is another strathspey which could be played as a polka, and the other is newly a reel - with most of their notes within the D chanter's range, at least in one part (and there are a few other nice tunes on these pages for the A chanter, like "Burning of the Piper's Hut" and others).

Thanks, Scott! Can't wait to try them out.

Here's the piece I had in mind from the Fitzwilliam Virginals (prefaced with a lute tune by Guilliame Morlaye), played by lowlandpiper (Pete Stewart), on his set of B smallpipes (with a flattened third):https://youtu.be/eD5SB2UwG3I

You mentioned the peculiar fingering style of Stewart before. I think that's because he's using the "closed fingering" style which is distinct from Highland fingering and similar to the fingering on the Northumbrian Smallpipe. It's the fingering intended for the Leicestershire Smallpipe that Goodacre makes. Supposedly it was used for proto-smallpipes in Scotland around the 18th century or so?:
https://goodbagpipes.com/index.php/about-me/writings/pipe-making/93-bagpipe-fingering-systems
I've attached the Morlaye hornpipe for reference. Can't find the Byrd tune.
I like the possible duet possibilities with the Morlaye tune

Hi Taylor,
Since we've played a bit of Piobaireachd on the "WILD" D chanter now, and in further thinking about this music and its energy, what do you think of Piobaireachd's 'energy' and music's energy in general?

So ,n searching for language about the 'energy' or 'vision' of Piobaireachd, I found this great 1915 manuscript -
Tus is Alt a" Chiuil-Mhoir
PIOBAIREAGHD: ITS ORIGIN AND CONSTRUCTION
BY
JOHN GRANT
Edinburgh, Scotland 1915
https://deriv.nls.uk/dcn23/9453/94537519.23.pdf

Piobaireachd is an art which stands in a very high position. It influences the
thoughts, and has a power over the emotions of the Highland heart that no other
type of music can equal. (PREFACE)

PIOBAIREACHD is said to be a wild and barbarous music, which is very difficult to describe. The meaning of the word piobaireachd is pipe-music. It is generally known by the genuine Highlander, and particularly by pipers, as a special type of music. Perhaps piobaireachd might be better defined as " Ceol Mor," or " The Great Music of the Celt." Bagpipe music is divided into two classes, viz. : " Ceol Mor " and " Ceol Aotrom." Ceol Mor means the Great Music, which is piobaireachd, and Ceol Aotrom means the Lighter Music, or Marches, Strathspeys, and Reels. It is Ceol Mor only, the classical music of the Great Highland Bagpipe, that I intend to deal with in this work.

It was quite impossible for it to grow momentarily, or
to have been handed to the Highlander as a fairy gift, with all its charm and power
of moving the Highland heart to joy, sorrow, or even the frenzy of battle. P 17

Piobaireachd is a class of music second to none as regards its power of moving
the Highland heart. p 18
https://deriv.nls.uk/dcn23/9453/94537519.23.pdf

Perhaps you can bring this manuscript - https://deriv.nls.uk/dcn23/9453/94537519.23.pdf - in conversation with Fitzwilliams?
the power to move the highland heart ... suggests to me culture (Highland culture around 1900) playing a significant role in hearing beauty in Piobaireachd (of varying shades of moving-ness ... to highly intense, energy-wise, for some ... and how to learn to play Piobaireachd to move people in a highly intensely beautiful way ... is an ongoing question I'm exploring, teaching, too) ... re even an identity's tastes in music ... suggesting possibly creating a culture of listeners to the Scottish Small Pipes' Piobaireachd ??? (perhaps emerging from other Piobaireachd listening cultures - am thinking GHB ones in particular) ... Have you gotten out your GHB yet and played (pre-baby arrival)? :))
Cheers, Scott

Piobaireachd playing thinking

Nice to talk, Ma,

Just played "Mackintosh's Banner" Piobaireachd through, after playing it 2 nights ago ... seeking to make it "sing" ... and to continue to play bagpipes daily ... as I develop my piping ... and also to "work out" my issues with practicing two musical instruments too ... and to make beautiful music, and develop a kind of well-being in playing daily, - almost like my morning meditation ...
Playing it went pretty well ... but whether I created something new interpretatively regarding Piobaireachd - and out of the box (rock and roll-wise, for example) - I'd say not yet ... ongoing explorations, and seeking of vision in these regards as well ... and whether I developed tonight a kind of well-being in playing - almost like my morning meditation .. i am exploring this further ...
Have fun with your "New Yorker" magazine class - and I looked up the book "Dark Money" by the author of the article Jane Mayer you're reading ... and, in a different vein, Quaker-inspired, and regarding even a single Digital currency to alleviate poverty, I think I'm oriented in a different direction in thinking about money than the book's title .... (as in socially responsible, or socially conscious, money ... and not as an author writing about  the seamier side of the financial world)
Back to music, not Piobaireachd, I heard the beginning of an interview with Jerry Lee Lewis yesterday, first great wildman in rock and roll, and somehow he knew from a young age that he was going to play the piano (with its '88 strings' instead of 6 strings on the guitar) ...
which offered a perspective shift regarding the two instruments I'm playing daily - bagpipes and piano ... and hearing this put briefly new different energy into playing today ... and perhaps on the piano upcoming too ...
Piobaireachd's 'energy' I think is fascinating too ... and how it plays out in life, as a consequence of playing it is interesting and can seem to be very positive (as old issues of some conflict even come up in playing or practicing too, interestingly) ... it's a great music, and it's playing seems to have an effect for me different from playing the piano, or playing JS Bach or Scottish Country Dance music ... but how to characterize this further?
You and I didn't talk on the phone about  my recent writing about Canyon, or NVGMD (whose pictures I just googled show her to be sincere too, which I appreciate) ... could an investigative reporter open new possibilities re Canyon even
... or buyer beware in general ?
Cultures of money as I seek to get WUaS offering Bachelor and PhD degrees this September 1 2021 ... and emerging in the manner of Friends ... are ones where I come back to the Desiderata "Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism."
On with music making, and seeking to begin playing earlier in the day, although playing just before bed, does provide a way to stay focused in playing if only relatively briefly. ... Beneficially ... :)
Love, Scott

Hi Ma,

What is a music's energy? Telemann, Vivaldi? It's kind of ineffable but that's what makes it interesting too ...
What is Piobaireachd's 'energy'?

Piobaireachd's 'energy' I think is fascinating too ... and how it plays out in life (my and others - culturally that is - since I'm playing Piobaireachd, what is new in my life or even re WUaS is kind of the question I'm asking), as a consequence of playing it, is interesting and can seem to be very positive (as old issues of some conflict even come up in playing or practicing Piobaireachd too, interestingly, re my 'perfectionism' for ex) ... it's a great music, and its playing seems to have an effect for me different from playing the piano, or playing JS Bach or Scottish Country Dance music on piano ... but how to characterize this further?
I just sent this to Taylor, re characterizing this further -

So, what's a music's 'energy' - the word I keep coming back to - here?
and re "how it plays out in life (my and others - culturally that is - since I'm playing Piobaireachd, what is new in my life or even re WUaS is kind of the question I'm asking)" - by culture I may mean community, but with lots of indirectness. Think too of a piece of JS Bach's music played in German, the former DDR, - and its ineffable role there, as a single piece played by one musician perhaps in one performance ... https://youtu.be/w121z69z-kM (LISTEN at 7:47 to the "Fugue in G minor, BWV 578 7:47" re a kind of transformation even within JS Bach's music that I'm seeking with Piobaireachd too - now why is this piece of music beautiful to my ear to many people's ... and perhaps even more beautiful than other Bach pieces? ... seeking too to get at beauty in Piobaireachd ... and what are the best JS Bach pieces among Piobaireachd in these regards? :) ... what is its 'energy' or 'vision' or ability to move to listeners heart re a culture of JS Bach appreciators ... and for the organist too, for example, like a player of Piobaireachd on the Great Highland Bagpipe? :)
Am exploring playing Piobaireachd on the Scottish Small Pipes and newly on the D chanter, and exploring too, as I wrote to Taylor the other day, and even regarding the mind-transforming potential of music :
"I think it could be great, innovative, creative and kinda wild to play beautifully "The Desperate Battle of the Birds" on the Scottish Small Pipes' D chanter - creating a kind of high lonesome sound (re bluegrass, and with a known, loved Piobaireachd) ... and also as a kind of tenor voice ... (would / could be a bit of BENDER and riff too with , or harmonize in, people's minds who are familiar with it in A possibly on the Scottish Small Pipes, and be something quite new and different for people familiar with the GHB and its ~ B flat mixolydian tuning : ) ... and now for something completely different (re Monty Python:) ... but not really :) ...
Just some ENVISIONING ... to play around with a bit
Will seek out some more tunes for the SSP D chanter (ie in the key of G with one sharp on F in the key signature) from the blue or pink books for tomorrow"
I think it's THESE APECTS of a music's 'energy,' 'vision' or 'ability to move' and culturally' that I'm thinking through. What do you think?
Nice to have heard from Peter Bothe in Bremen today, to whom I replied already in interesting manner ... and even regarding beginning a Bay Area Stammtisch ... may share ... and re becoming more social than I am these days :)
How was your class? How was the article after reading and discussing together anew?
Love, Scott

PS What is VIRTUOSIC playing too of Piobaireachd and regarding Yuan Sheng playing Bach: Complete Partitas - https://youtu.be/s_num0eZIQ8 (which I've shared with you before) - by way of comparison? What is VIRTUOSIC or GENIUS playing of Piobareachd?

Dear Taylor,

Are you up for playing "The Desperate Battle of the Birds" in 8 days or so - in a kind of online SSP recital on the A chanter? Regarding playing through all of the beginnings of the ground and variations of The Desperate Battle of the Birds this evening, have a listen to the Crunluath movements in particular in these 2 recordings of PIOBAIREACHD -

The Desperate Battle of the Birds

John Burgess

https://youtu.be/Mmxp3btwXzs

Lament For Alasdair Dearg MacDonald (Piobaireachd)

Bob Brown

https://youtu.be/60foYtXrx_I

(And shall we check out too some of the fingering movements  for Alasdair Dearg too today - from the Yellow Tutor? )

Bob Brown here seems to add some A MACH Crunluaths to his recording - if and as you read along in the CoP Yellow Tutor Vol 4 ... go figure ... but there's so much to learn from the Taorluath and Crunluath variations of these 2 pieces - the crowning movements re a kind of crescendo or 'peaking' flow experience-wise, or bliss even in the meditation (as we learn the idiom further, and here's a decent overview in a new way - https://corymbus.co.uk/piobaireachd-t... - from a writer at the 'Open' Univ in Britain).

Did you play your GHB this week by any chance? (Biseell writes above that Piper's A is above even a B flat :)

Also am liking again and again, personally, the non-mensurality and relative slow tempo of Burgess's Urlar in his Desperate Battle of the Birds, but PM Donald MacLeod's playing - with LIGHT NON-Mensurality (I'll coin this) - of the Urlar, and his teaching of the Taorluath and Crunluath variations may be further helpful learning introductions to this beautiful piece ... https://youtu.be/r1w9J2atyHw ...

All on the A chanter today for Piobaireachd,

I'm coming back to these Guidelines - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm - re (my addition) choosing pieces you enjoy playing (and I have also JS Bach in mind) ... and I'm still on a hunt for Piobaireachd I like better than The Desperate Battle of the Birds ...

Let's explore one of the new Blue Book SCD tunes on the D chanter toward the close of today's meeting if we have time, - if not next week.

(Am hearing too in my mind still the potential for Piobaireachd played creatively with Allman Bros '73 at Cow Palace in the middle of this ... specific Piobaireachds with a rock and roll bands' music that moves me too ... need to get the AI and machine learning going to generate more related tracks with which to play rocking innovative Piobaireachd ... )

Am on an ongoing hunt for most lyrical melodic Piobaireachds (to my ear) ... Begin with the "Lament for the Viscount of Dundee" in 15 days perhaps ... or?

Cheers,

Scott

Here are some decent new overviews of Piobaireachd -

(Bissell again)

https://corymbus.co.uk/piobaireachd-t...

Here's an university of Florida researcher Jordan Alexander Key - https://youtu.be/wWjFYPwcxWY - who's created newly an academic interpretation fo Piobaireachd as innovation given at the University of Arizona School of Music going his own way in the Piping world, creating his own audience (and who self-describes himself as blind and gay).

https://youtu.be/wWjFYPwcxWY

And here's west coaster and traditionalist and excellent piper Jack Lee innovating and interpreting (mind-wise too) a Piobaireachd somewhere in his own process of playing and recording all 200-300 Piobaireachds, as one example within the tradition and musical form of smart innovation -

Bob Brown here seems to add some A MACH Crunluaths to his recording - if and as you read along in the CoP Yellow Tutor Vol 4 ... go figure ... but there's so much to learn from the Taorluath and Crunluath variations of these 2 pieces - the crowning movements re a kind of crescendo or 'peaking' flow experience-wise, or bliss even in the meditation (as we learn the idiom further, and here's a decent overview in a new way - https://corymbus.co.uk/piobaireachd-the-classical-music-of-the-great-highland-bagpipe/ - from a writer at the 'Open' Univ in Britain).

Begin with the "Lament for the Viscount of Dundee" in 15 days perhaps ... or?
Cheers, Scott
Here are some decent new overviews of Piobaireachd - (Bissell again)https://corymbus.co.uk/piobaireachd-the-classical-music-of-the-great-highland-bagpipe/

And here's west coaster and traditionalist and excellent piper Jack Lee innovating and interpreting (mind-wise too) a Piobaireachd somewhere in his own process of playing and recording all 200-300 Piobaireachds, as one example within the tradition and musical form of smart innovation - "Video: “War or Peace” – Jack Lee’s rendition of obscure tune"
