Scottish Small Pipes' D chanter 

Hi Taylor, 

I'm sending two further tunes for the D chanter to play around with - one is another strathspey which could be played as a polka, and the other is newly a reel - with most of their notes within the D chanter's range, at least in one part (and there are a few other nice tunes on these pages for the A chanter, like "Burning of the Piper's Hut" and others).

Here's the piece I had in mind from the Fitzwilliam Virginals (prefaced with a lute tune by Guilliame Morlaye), played by lowlandpiper (Pete Stewart), on his set of B smallpipes (with a flattened third):https://youtu.be/eD5SB2UwG3I

You mentioned the peculiar fingering style of Stewart before. I think that's because he's using the "closed fingering" style which is distinct from Highland fingering and similar to the fingering on the Northumbrian Smallpipe. It's the fingering intended for the Leicestershire Smallpipe that Goodacre makes. Supposedly it was used for proto-smallpipes in Scotland around the 18th century or so?:

Since we've played a bit of Piobaireachd on the "WILD" D chanter now, and in further thinking about this music and its energy, what do you think of Piobaireachd's 'energy' and music's energy in general? 

So ,n searching for language about the 'energy' or 'vision' of Piobaireachd, I found this great 1915 manuscript -

PIOBAIREACHD is said to be a wild and barbarous music, which is very difficult to describe. The meaning of the word piobaireachd is pipe-music. Perhaps piobaireachd might be better defined as " Ceol Mor," or " The Great Music of the Celt." Bagpipe music is divided into two classes, viz. : " Ceol Mor " and " Ceol Aotrom." It is Ceol Mor only, the classical music of the Great Highland Bagpipe, that I intend to deal with in this work.

Piobaireachd playing thinking

Nice to talk, Ma, 

Just played "Mackintosh's Banner" Piobaireachd through, after playing it 2 nights ago ... seeking to make it "sing" ... and to continue to play bagpipes daily ... as I develop my piping ... and also to "work out" my issues with practicing two musical instruments too ... and to make beautiful music, and develop a kind of well-being in playing daily, - almost like my morning meditation ... 
Playing it went pretty well ... but whether I created something new interpretatively regarding Piobaireachd - and out of the box (rock and roll-wise, for example) - I'd say not yet ... ongoing explorations, and seeking of vision in these regards as well ... and whether I developed tonight a kind of well-being in playing - almost like my morning meditation .. i am exploring this further ... 
Have fun with your "New Yorker" magazine class - and I looked up the book "Dark Money" by the author of the article Jane Mayer you're reading ... and, in a different vein, Quaker-inspired, and regarding even a single Digital currency to alleviate poverty, I think I'm oriented in a different direction in thinking about money than the book's title .... (as in socially responsible, or socially conscious, money ... and not as an author writing about  the seamier side of the financial world)
Back to music, not Piobaireachd, I heard the beginning of an interview with Jerry Lee Lewis yesterday, first great wildman in rock and roll, and somehow he knew from a young age that he was going to play the piano (with its '88 strings' instead of 6 strings on the guitar) ... 
which offered a perspective shift regarding the two instruments I'm playing daily - bagpipes and piano ... and hearing this put briefly new different energy into playing today ... and perhaps on the piano upcoming too ... 
Piobaireachd's 'energy' I think is fascinating too ... and how it plays out in life, as a consequence of playing it is interesting and can seem to be very positive (as old issues of some conflict even come up in playing or practicing too, interestingly) ... it's a great music, and it's playing seems to have an effect for me different from playing the piano, or playing JS Bach or Scottish Country Dance music ... but how to characterize this further? 
You and I didn't talk on the phone about  my recent writing about Canyon, or NVGMD (whose pictures I just googled show her to be sincere too, which I appreciate) ... could an investigative reporter open new possibilities re Canyon even 
... or buyer beware in general ? 
Cultures of money as I seek to get WUaS offering Bachelor and PhD degrees this September 1 2021 ... and emerging in the manner of Friends ... are ones where I come back to the Desiderata "Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism." 
On with music making, and seeking to begin playing earlier in the day, although playing just before bed, does provide a way to stay focused in playing if only relatively briefly. ... Beneficially ... :)

So, what's a music's 'energy' - the word I keep coming back to - here? 
and re "how it plays out in life (my and others - culturally that is - since I'm playing Piobaireachd, what is new in my life or even re WUaS is kind of the question I'm asking)" - by culture I may mean community, but with lots of indirectness. Think too of a piece of JS Bach's music played in German, the former DDR, - and its ineffable role there, as a single piece played by one musician perhaps in one performance ... https://youtu.be/w121z69z-kM (LISTEN at 7:47 to the "Fugue in G minor, BWV 578 7:47" re a kind of transformation even within JS Bach's music that I'm seeking with Piobaireachd too - now why is this piece of music beautiful to my ear to many people's ... and perhaps even more beautiful than other Bach pieces? ... seeking too to get at beauty in Piobaireachd ... and what are the best JS Bach pieces among Piobaireachd in these regards? :) ... what is its 'energy' or 'vision' or ability to move to listeners heart re a culture of JS Bach appreciators ... and for the organist too, for example, like a player of Piobaireachd on the Great Highland Bagpipe? :) 
Am exploring playing Piobaireachd on the Scottish Small Pipes and newly on the D chanter, and exploring too, as I wrote to Taylor the other day, and even regarding the mind-transforming potential of music :
"I think it could be great, innovative, creative and kinda wild to play beautifully "The Desperate Battle of the Birds" on the Scottish Small Pipes' D chanter - creating a kind of high lonesome sound (re bluegrass, and with a known, loved Piobaireachd) ... and also as a kind of tenor voice ... (would / could be a bit of BENDER and riff too with , or harmonize in, people's minds who are familiar with it in A possibly on the Scottish Small Pipes, and be something quite new and different for people familiar with the GHB and its ~ B flat mixolydian tuning : ) ... and now for something completely different (re Monty Python:) ... but not really :) ... 
Just some ENVISIONING ... to play around with a bit 
Will seek out some more tunes for the SSP D chanter (ie in the key of G with one sharp on F in the key signature) from the blue or pink books for tomorrow"
I think it's THESE APECTS of a music's 'energy,' 'vision' or 'ability to move' and culturally' that I'm thinking through. What do you think?

I'm glad you're doing well with your WUaS project. As for learning German, you might want to start your own Bay Area Stammtisch!?

Here, things are not running smoothly at all. As you might have heard from the news, Germany extended its lockdown until April 18th. In the last few months the State of Bremen was doing pretty well compared to the rest of the country, new cases were pretty low here.
It all changed in the last 2 or 3 weeks. Figures of new Corona cases going steadily up, up, up. The City of Bremerhaven even introduced a curfew from today until April 18th, even 'shopping by appointment' here in Bremen is back to 'order and pick up' from yesterday on.

Merkel had a pretty hard time with the states. She wanted a hard lockdown over Easter for the whole country and had to take it back. Now, politicians start to talk about a hard lockdown for the whole country for at least a fortnight, because numbers are rising steeply.

On the other hand, testing and vaccination is stilling progressing very, very slowly. Bremen has the highest number of people who have already got at least the first shot, due to the fact that we have the biggest vaccination centre in the whole of Germany. They could very easily vaccinate the entire population of the State of Bremen in a few weeks, but currently there is just not enough vaccine available.

Except for a few weeks working at a supermarket, I have been out of work for several months now. There are no jobs for my profession, as most refugee projects have been stopped for the foreseeable future and it is doubtful if they get re-started after the pandemic is over.

I keep myself busy with online learning and virtual recreation in Second Life, but it is no real substitute for the real thing in a real world. People get more and more fed up with home office, Zoom meetings, even having fun in SL. My language groups got smaller and smaller. So, I have stopped German and English Hangouts for the time being, only the Second Life explorations and mystery hunts are still going.

Besides all that negative stuff I mentioned above, I am still trying to thing positive and hope for better times in the not so distant future.

I'd see this primarily for German speaking (and learning pour moi) - and community building as well. Perhaps WUaS could further somehow host this. Would you participate if it met on a regular basis? On a Saturday at 10:30 am Pacific Time for an hour or so, (perhaps 2nd Saturdays of the month, or even every Saturday?). I thought to host this even out of the now-closed UU church of Berkeley / Kensington (where I walk to almost daily for the exercise, and perhaps as a 'cultural' destination too) - eventually physically, but don't know how that would work, since it's still very closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. And then I thought of exploring even inviting some scientists, like Denny Vrandecic, founder of Wikidata, who now lives in Berkeley (and no longer works at Google). And I thought to invite Gerd Moe-Berhens in Berlin, a synthetic biological scientist and Apple programmer there (see some videos here of us here from 2012 - http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm), and Lydia Pintscher too, as well as Markus Kroetzsch, both Wikidatan leads (and computer scientists too in part). And if Denny could come physically, perhaps this virtual Bay Area Stammtisch could find an actual home - with food - in a cafe in Berkeley during brunch time even, and even near the University of California (the cafe in Cal's International House, informally, at the top of Bancroft Way on Piedmont Ave - https://ihouse.berkeley.edu/dining/international-house-café - in the fall ?) - and with all of us in front of our laptops too for an Actual-Virtual Bay Area Stammtisch with people from all over the world (I haven't seen this Actual-Virtual conversation form yet!). Das Starten eines Stammtisch in der Bay Area (auch virtuelle Harbin Hot Springs, da es einen gab) ist eine gute Idee (als Tisch für Stammgäste oder als Gemeinschaftstisch oder als Baumstamm-Tisch für Gespräche oder als Stammestisch - alles etymologisch Ideen, die ich kürzlich untersucht habe). Ich würde dies hauptsächlich für Deutsch sprechen (und für Moi lernen) sehen - und auch für den Aufbau von Gemeinschaften. Vielleicht könnte WUaS dies irgendwie weiter hosten. Würden Sie teilnehmen, wenn es sich regelmäßig treffen würde? An einem Samstag um 10:30 Uhr pazifischer Zeit für eine Stunde oder so (vielleicht am 2. Samstag im Monat oder sogar jeden Samstag?). I wondered too after our talk, and regarding the idea that a Fidelity Mutual Funds, if they came to back a single cryptocurrency emerging from academic paper writing by the Boston Federal Reserve (as a part of the US's central banks' system of regional offices) in collaboration with the MIT DCI Digital Currency Initiative (https://twitter.com/mitDCI > https://twitter.com/MITBitcoinClub/status/1368984074086477834?s=20 - https://twitter.com/neha) - what the implications would there be legally - in US federal LAW - for a privately backed, even investor based, national currency, compared with the current state managed currency called the US dollar$? How would this change the USA's orientation for example to the US dollar, - and even as a de facto international currency? How much new law will get written, and what would the societal implications of such a state-based national US currency to an investor based national US currency be?

Will ask my Kaiser Permanente primary care physician on M 4/5 what his read on MA regulations from CA ARE for coronavirus vaccine, - and maybe I can even get it at the KP clinic / hospital site called P.S., after my physical in person physically  (even though the KP Representative on the phone in making appt. said they don't offer the shot there - go figure further ... If getting the vaccine, or saying I got a negative SARSCov2 test, could act as a 'passport' (at least in my mother's mind, for ex. - ...  re heading to MA in July or late June, I'd consider it, but am in general a bit in the anti-vaccine camp, - and re scientific skeptical orientation.

Will ask my Kaiser Permanente primary care physician on M 4/5 what his read on MA regulations from CA ARE for coronavirus vaccine, - and maybe I can even get it at the KP clinic / hospital site called P.S., after my physical in person physically  (even though the KP Representative on the phone in making appt. said they don't offer the shot there - go figure further ... Is this protective of members' Kaiser Permanente medical practice re possibly unnecessary vaccines (re in case of emergency et al hypothesEs ?) Wouldn't want side effects of an unnecessary vaccine to lower my sperm count, make me infertile or similar re innumerable possible side effects - with no time whatsoever in the past year to run effective clinical trials in the jump start rush to generate a common cold vaccine in the genetic engineering revolution :)
Where's the EVIDENCE re long term side effects at the mRNA molecular level (not seeking any hypothetical 'thalidomide kids' re caveat emptor/buyer beware? (And where's your protective skepticism, Ma? Appreciating Ed too  ....  an 'evangelist' for said vaccine 
If getting the vaccine, or saying I got a negative SARSCov2 test, could act as a 'passport' (at least in my mother's mind, for ex. - ...  re heading to MA in July or late June, I'd consider it, but am in general a bit in the anti-vaccine camp, - and re scientific skeptical orientation. 
... visit Cuttyhunk together this July, I wonder, in some of these regards? :) (And is this a good idea even? . . . and ... by any chance seeing a therapist MD, I wonder?)
Thoughts, questions, ideas, suggestions, science? - in a climate or context of an internet information campaign designed to do many things but not necessarily respond to a current more-dangerous-than-the-common-cold virus?

This question headed in the direction of language- or linguistic- relativity in sense, perhaps loosely as a philosophy of language question, and regarding too creating CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School, planned in all ~200 countries, in their official and main languages, and also in all 7,139 known living languages as wiki schools for open teaching and learning (see, too the beginning Philosophy or Language wiki subject re above, with just a few MIT OCW courses). MIT OCW is currently in 4 languages, and Wikipedia is in 300 languages. WUaS, as I've communicated with Nyasha, seeks to eventually hire philosophy instructors at WUaS in all countries' languages, potentially. How might philosophy - western analytic, if you will (and other philosophy) - emerge in all 200 countries' main and official languages, and comparatively generatively especially? 
As a follow up question, Sally, and regarding your mentioning Hegel's views on reason, subject and object, and consciousness, and your interests also, Alison, in the philosophy of mind and consciousness and computing ethics, I'm curious how to explore related questions further in building out a single realistic virtual earth (https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarth?src=hashtag_click), a realistic virtual earth for languages (https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForLanguages?src=hashtag_click), - and a realistic virtual earth for philosophy (think Google Street View with TIME SLIDER, Maps, Earth, Tensorflow AI, Translate, with even avatar bots that are realistic like Samsung Neons, and in an iterating, group-buildable infrastructure or platform). So, my translation - "... für Hegel ist das Wirkliche die Vernunft" ???? - and could we begin to "see" "the purpose of history" using his examples and narratives, even, - way beyond text - in an emerging Actual-Virtual, Physical-Digital realistic virtual earth (even with text-in-the-sidebar of Google Street View, conceptually). 
And so in what ways could w best explore for example creating a realistic virtual Hegel too, as avatar bot, with whom to come into conversation with, - by reading his texts into chat bot artificial intelligence, machine learning software, such that we could come into conversation with Hegel in an iterating way (not unlike talking with an historical pilgrim actor at Plimoth Plantation in the 1620s - but might this be one beginning idea)?

Hegel’s “Philosophic” Approach to World History


In the first paragraphs of his Lectures on the Philosophy of History, Hegel flags the fact that his “philosophic” approach to world history is neither purely empirical nor purely a priori but somehow a hybrid of both. As he notes, the philosophic historian sets out to satisfy what seem to be incompatible demands: the demand to objectively describe the historical facts without the distorting influence of interpretation, and the demand to avoid the naïveté of assuming that our access to the facts is unmediated. In this chapter, I identify key features of Hegel’s philosophic method and suggest how that method can help us demystify some of his most curious pronouncements, for example, that the purpose of history can be known and realized by us, and that the “actual” is “rational”.
