and WUaS in Wikidata

. . .

WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki, WUaS Opencura WBstack Wikibase, WUaS in Wikidata

Dear Larry, Lydia, Tito, Jayni, Juan, Yuping, Julian, (WUaS Board), All,
Here's an update on how WUaS MIRAHEZE MediaWiki is structured, as a blog entry -
2021: New Year, New Teams, New Focus, Same Principles
Introduction to Team Restructuring for 2021
https://phabricator.miraheze.org/phame/post/view/12/2021_new_year_new_teams_new_focus_same_principles/

So,

1)WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki
As you may know, World Univ & Sch has received this WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki in 2017 (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects), after donating ourselves to

2)Wikidata Wikidata in 2015 for co-development (and for a structured knowledge database in Wikipedia's 300 languages) -
Here's one of about 725 "front end" WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki pages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - which you can teach, and learn to, and add to as well ...

... but the WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki as '"front end" and the WUaS access from Wikidata aren't yet interoperable; (and WUaS is only in English here so far too, but will expand to Wikipedia's 300 wiki languages when this all iterates a bit further).
Here's an example of Wikidata q-item number (which WUaS will query information from, SQL-wise) -
Nontheist Quakers
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:EntityPage/Q7049628
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nontheist_Quakers

3)WUaS Opencura WBstack Wikibase
And in 2020, WUaS got WUaS OPENCURA Wikibase (part of Wikidata) also called WBSTACK, I think, where Wikibase is the platform on which Wikidata runs I think. Here are some instances of WUaS in the Opencura Wikibase WBstack -
Courses -

course - https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Item:Q1

People -

individual - https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Item:Q4

instructor - https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Property:P5

Institution: https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Item:Q368

Country: https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Item:Q114

Source of courses: https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Item:Q369

in

recent changes - https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Special:RecentChanges

accessible from -

https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Main_Page

And, WUaS seeks to plan, brainstorming-wise, for all 7.8 billion people on planet as wiki teachers and learners in WUaS Opencura WBstack here, for example, re -INDIVIDUALS https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Item:Q4

(And see these 5 initial reasons too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/12/wild-pomegranate-burchellia-bubalina.html )
But none of these 3 WUaS platforms are NOT interoperable yet, or working entirely well together either.

And here's 4WikiTree
And WUaS may seek also to interoperate all these platforms with WikiTree, another WIKI, (and with its plans for a single family tree, and regarding GENETICS of all even) ... and presumably for 7.8 billion people too (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2524)

So, please check out the Miraheze Mediawiki update - since this will be the "front end" wiki of World University and School, for open wiki teaching and learning (and in 300 initial languages), and as these all become interoperable.
All of this may also be integrated with this new development at Wikipedia, called ABSTRACT WIKIPEDIA, with its focus on lexicographical data -"[Abstract-wikipedia] Newsletter #18: Two prototype tools to visualize lexicographic coverage in Wikidata"
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Abstract_Wikipedia/Updates/2021-02-10

I see as a first step emerging INFO BOXES as being central on our WUaS "front end" in WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki drawing on our WUaS Wikidata "backend" for information - and regarding potentially CC-4 MIT OCW courses in 4 languages, edX courses in 15-20 languages, etc., and as WUaS begins to build - and for students to take courses from for credit, as well as to TEACH TO and LEARN FROM wiki-wise in a sense especially.
Thoughts, ideas, suggestions, questions?
Sincerely, Scotthttps://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation

2021 Survey of the WBstack User Community
Thank you for submitting your responses!

Which Wikibase(s) do you administer on WBstack? please provide the site title(s). *

https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Main_Page - World University and School

Are you administering any of these Wikibases as part of your role within a research team, an institution (such as a library), or a company? *

Yes, an institution

If you answered "yes" to the above question, please share the specific research team, institution, or company you are a part of.

CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School, planned in 200 countries, and in their official and main languages, for online free-to-students' university degrees, and in all 7117 known living languages as wiki schools for open teaching and learning.

Have you ever installed or maintained a Wikibase outside of WBstack? For instance, by using the Docker images or manually installing the software. *

No

Why did you choose Wikibase for your project(s)? *

Suggested I think by Denny Vrandecic, and Houcemeddine Turcki

How did you first hear about WBstack? *

I think from Denny Vrandecic, and Houcemeddine Turcki

Why did you choose to create your Wikibase on WBstack? *
To develop wiki World Univ & Sch further

What are the most important things you think are missing from either WBstack or Wikibase software? *

I'm not really a site database administrator, for one, and WUaS integration with our WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki, Wikidata, and WUaS Opencura WBstack hasn't yet happened.

Do you plan to continue using WBstack in the future? *

Yes

Please provide an explanation of your answer to the above question. *

Seeking to build out further, first for matriculating undergraduate and PhD students this autumn at WUaS, with WUaS newly partnering with edX (founded by MIT and Harvard and Anant Agarwal, MIT Professor of EECS and CEO of edX)

Is it important to you that WBstack does not cost money to use? *

Yes, it is important that WBstack does not cost money

When you have questions or encounter issues with your WBstack instance, where do you usually go for help? Check all that apply. *

Haven't begun doing this, since Houcemeddine Turcki helped install WBstack for WUaS

Do you think WBstack should be officially supported/maintained by Wikimedia Deutschland, rather than run by volunteers? *

Yes

Please provide an explanation of your answer to the above question *

Integration with their other infrastructure has much merit; and WUaS seeks to build out for wiki teachers and learners - as individuals ... https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Item:Q4 - in all 7,117 known living languages, and potentially, brainstorming-wise, for all 7.8 billion people on the planet.

May Wikimedia Deutschland contact you with additional follow-up questions? *

Yes

If you said yes to the above question, please provide your email address.

 Tuesday, March 9, 2021

Ian, Thanks!

Are you available please for a lesson tomorrow, 2/10/21 around 3:45 pm (in what are turning out to be every other weeks' lessons)?
I've been noting over a number of viewings the video time markers for the lesson recording from 2/10/21, which I'll shared with you from that email thread.
And in searching for the most beautiful Piobaireachds to my ear (The Desperate Battle of the Birds tops my list to this day), this is one exploration: :)
Am in exploring mode for most beautiful Piobaireachds (to my ear:) ... Which Piobaireachds do you like most among the following? Which are some of the very most melodic or lyrical Piobaireachd you know? What are some of the most beautiful PIobaireachds ever for you (akin to The Desperate Battle of the Birds to your ear)?  (Of the CoP's Vol 4 Yellow Tutor's 4 pieces, 'Glengarry's Lament,' 'MacKintoshes' Banner,' 'Lament for Alasdair Dearg MacDonnell of Glengarry,' and 'The Company's Lament,' - and then also 'The Blind Piper's Obstinacy,' and 'The Desperate Battle of the Birds,' - I like The Desperate Battle the most, - it's my current favorite - as I think about this and feel this out too).

1. "The Big Spree" It's anything but a spree, it's a wonderful sad,
evocative, haunting piece of music, definitely one to "feel" those emotions
in or sob your heart out to. Best recording I've heard is Donald MacPherson,
though Jack Lee also makes a splendid job of it in a Piping Centre recital
recording.

https://vimeo.com/143726073 (what 'derangement' does the MC talk of ... an artistic craziness, or altered consciousness, too even re Second Sightedness - https://www.scotsman.com/news/scots-belief-second-sight-gift-premonition-1482608 - re seeing ahead even into the Piobaireachd piece one's playing :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vspENtfhLMw

2. "MacDougall's Gathering," An insistent call to the clan that cannot be
resisted, very musical with some very clever phrasing, a tune that sings and
soars away. Bill Livingstone's playing and interpretation of this tune is
second to none.

Pipe Major William Livingstone, MacDougall's Gathering
https://youtu.be/BJpTDBPgtDI

3. "Macdonald of Kinlochmoidart's Lament no.1" A tune not heard very often
nowadays with a lovely melody line in the urlar which carries strongly
through the whole tune. I only have one very old recording of this by
William M. Macdonald.

James Robertson - MacDonald of Kinlochmoidarts Lament (No. 1) Ground (The Blue Chair Sessions #5)
https://youtu.be/B3AlGOJyMdc

4. "Lament for Queen Anne" This is a regal, stately and grand tune, it just
moves along so full of grace it does seem to have a Royal feel to it, again
a lovely melody that grows on you the more you listen to it and absorb it's
beautiful music. Only recording I have is by Fred Morrison, where he has the
misfortune to break down in the crunluath variations.

Queen Anne's Lament
https://youtu.be/wuKb73r8kGs

5. "Battle of Auldearn no.1" A great tune with a feel not so much of
lamenting for the dead of the battle but as an inspiring incitement to great
deeds and a promise of a glorious death. I love this tune and have a
wonderful recording of Captain Gavin Stoddart playing this faultlessly to
win at a Glenfiddich championship.

Pipe Major Gavin Stoddart MBE BEM, The Battle of Auldearn, Number 1
https://youtu.be/LSqmy-uR5XI

6. "Lament for Donald Doughal MacKay" this is probably the MOST popular
tune amongst top Piobaireachd players, a big tune in every sense of the
word, and one that just sings along on a well tuned pipe, full of expression
and life.
I have a good recording of Roddy MacLeod playing this on his peerless pipes,
but it has been done by others who also make a really good job of it.

Lament for Donald Dougal Mackay
https://youtu.be/Z8bAvpix5x4

7. "Rory MacLoude's Lament" Another tune that sings along with great melody
tinged with sadness, like MacDougall's Gathering it is cleverly written to
bring out the best of the melody, it's a tune that took a short while to
grow on me. I have good recordings of both Murray Henderson and Hugh
MacAllum playing this tune, both players do it splendid justice.

Metro Cup 2015: Chris Armstrong - Piobaireachd "Rory MacLoude's Lament"
https://youtu.be/aHQBdXn7Tok

8. "Lady Annapool's Lament" A truly magical tune especially when you get
into the variations, as a pentatonic tune the melody line is quite exquisite
from such a meagre range. I have a very old recording of John Stewart
playing this with complete mastery, he really rattles along in the taorluath
and crunluath variations losing none of the clarity of the movements but
driving the melody notes insistently forward, beautifully played.

Lady Annapool’s Lament
CPA C Grade Piobaireachd Bob Low
https://www.golectures.com/index.php?go=search&yti=5vCjRBmPK48

9. "The Desperate Battle" Another tune similar to the last one in that I
think the variations surpass the urlar in beauty and inventiveness, a tune
to soar away with "the birds" the high A's are pure magic. Great recording
of this tune by John D. Burgess.

The Desperate Battle Of The Birds
https://youtu.be/r1w9J2atyHw

10 "The Old Woman's Lullaby" I have loved this tune ever since I heard The
Invergordon Distillery "Pipes In Concert" LP record in 1966, the whole band
plays it with seconds. It's a great tune and I love it, I have trouble
memorising it for some strange reason but the melody develops along very
nicely but also very subtly. Good recordings abound of all the greats
playing this tune. Donald Macleod, Donald MacPherson, John D. Burgess,
Captain John MacLellan et al.

Just came across this "The Old Woman's Lullaby" which John Broadwell (https://groups.google.com/g/rec.music.makers.bagpipe/c/tHZPS2mbZMg?pli=1 - above are his choices of favorite Piobaireachd) had written was one of his favorite 10 Piobaireachds ever - and this is played as an ENSEMBLE by some of the greatest pipers in the world, with Roddy MacLeod I think offering some non-mensural beats with his foot (a bit like a Pipe Major - but not re the interesting mensural "The Desperate Battle" pipe band version you shared) ...

2019-01-19: MHAF WinterStorm: Piobaireachd - The Old Woman's Lullaby
https://youtu.be/bnKTsSaRwpY

Out of the box, and between-instruments' wise, am also inspired in an ongoing and creative way by English woman Catherine Ashcroft playing the Uilleann Pipes here -
Catherine Ashcroft & Maurice Dickson (Mochara) - Táimse im' Chodladh/King of the Pipers
https://youtu.be/P40YOU8ggJk (which slow piece is played non-mensurally as well:)

- and re Piobaireachd envisioning even :) (Why are these greatest Scottish Piobaireachd players playing in unison, I ask myself, of a solo form -  is it the connectedness of musical culture this generates :)? A kinda rad question, but am exploring ... :) Having listened to all of the above, "The Desperate Battle of the Birds" continues to be my favorite, although if I had to choose, maybe it's Gavin Stoddart playing "Battle of Auldearn no.1" as well as the piece itself, that's my favorite of these 10.  Favorite Piobaireachd for you? (I ask all these questions in exploring mind-mode, again, and as someone who isn't familiar with the vast majority of Piobaireachd from the Scottish mists of time :)
Thank you, Ian!Scott

Scott MacLeod <sgkmacleod@gmail.com>10:43 AM (11 hours ago)to JanieGood morning, Ma,
This email thread begins with an email from George Preston former headmaster at Fettes' College in Kimmerghame house in Scotland (am reposting below:) ... And is connecting for me in very positive ways. Am curious whether I could meet somehow a life partner through Fettes' connections (of Scottish heritage too?) ... A 26 yo graduate student in medicine even in the SF Bay Area for ex? THE sense of connection is one thing I find fascinating and salutary. George seems to come out of a deeply settled Scottish place, or mind, culturally, (and something like meditatively even, identity-wise?) ... Having seen a lot of reality in Edinburgh as Auld Reekie.
... All potentially (but perhaps this is a projection or transference) ... And as the prospect of aging reversal drug therapies emerge (thanks to Crick and Watson's discovery of DNA in 1953 at Cambridge ...)

"On the morning of February 28, they determined that the structure of DNA was a double-helix polymer, or a spiral of two DNA strands, each containing a long chain of monomer nucleotides, wound around each other. According to their findings, DNA replicated itself by separating into individual strands, each of which became the template for a new double helix. In his best-selling book, The Double Helix (1968), Watson later claimed that Crick announced the discovery by walking into the nearby Eagle Pub and blurting out that “we had found the secret of life.”" https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/watson-and-crick-discover-chemical-structure-of-dna
...where we read "The Double Helix" at Shady Side Academy in high school too :) ... but not at Fettes' College high school for me :) ). And there's further much potential for modeling DNA like Crick and Watson in a realistic virtual earth for genetics - https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand/status/1235357771744169985?s=19 (see #hashtag here and here https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1371152819705704450?s=19 ).
New Tweet just now -

I think George Preston may have attended Cambridge studying physics as undergraduate.
...
What are you up to this week? :)
Was good to bagpipe last night again, and per George here. (I recorded The Desperate Battle of the Birds' Piobaireachd the night before, one of my first times doing so :)

From George Preston -
Message from old Auld Reekie

Scott

I received a message "Do not reply" from cyber space last night thanking me for arranging the virtual 150 celebrations. These thanks I have filed away for posterity, but I let you know that I can't Zoom, never twitter and shudder at the thought of showing my Face in any book.

Great to know that you pipe on the cliffs of Santa Barbara every morning.

Although I introduced computing in the year after you left (with an 8 Kb Commodore PET in my study in Ki) and continued until 3 years ago for the OFs, I am radidly losing the ability to keep up with the present complexities. I keep asking the Development Department if they cannot make a one click entry to their wonderful, informative ever changing web site! I can only go in circle around their maze!

At any rate bagpipes are not yet computerised! Those were the days - good to know you thrive.

Good wishes. GDCP

The Desperate Battle of the Birds - Donald MacLeod

at the beginning Donald MacLeod says: "This tune we are told depicts the annual lek or gathering of black game at which the proper pecking order is established. ..."

Is the Black Grouse below the bird or game that Donald MacLeod is speaking of, since they gather in leks in Scotland? They interestingly don't seem to fly very high, regarding Piobaireachds soaring or flying qualities to my ear.

hi-bye, Ma, and Ciao, as well:)
How are you? Nice to talk with you briefly yesterday. Buy? Too ... What does this mean? ... and now with cryptocurrencies coming into play?

But buying may not be an option ... which could be even good value! ... after I texted Craig this morning, the little fancy light bulb in my bedside lamp went out (a MIT moment ... with the internet of things even somehow ... ) ... who knows ... time to get a replacement light bulb ...  (Could 'buy' mean 'get' here? :) ... and even per the named CEO of the WUaS Corp in Romania, one of whose email addresses is get.julian@ ... :)

WUaS's edX Online Campus Inquiry ~ World Univ & Sch can begin this autumn to offer online (CC-4 MIT OCW-centric too) WUaS PhD degrees (with an estimated 7 year completion time at first) via the edX course platform initially

Matthew, (& Larry),

Thanks so much, and what an amazing collection of edX courses.
I'm glad to learn from your edX perspective that World Univ & Sch can begin this autumn to offer online (CC-4 MIT OCW-centric too) WUaS PhD degrees (with an estimated 7 year completion time at first) via the edX course platform initially - in addition to WUaS Bachelor degrees. This is great and the spreadsheet of edX you shared is a great place to start, and WUaS will seek to explore beginning our PhD programs perhaps with edX 'Advanced' undergraduate courses, if such might become part of the first year of a PhD program for our WUaS prospective students (all of whom will be learning with English as a second language, and newly on the edX platform too - big learning curves, both).
In preparing personally for an upcoming Harvard Philosophy online colloquium (on Hegel's view of world history) with Boston University's Sally Sedgwick (your University) - https://harvard.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_arIJ4jnnSpiIm7snx1Nbwg - I came across this HarvardX video taught by Harvard Architecture Prof. Michael Hayes,
Hegel's history - HarvardX Prof Michael Hayes https://youtu.be/ZHrvairaYSw
and see now that it's part of this HarvardX course - "The Architectural Imagination" ... https://www.edx.org/course/the-architectural-imagination (line 260 in the current edX spreadsheet you shared). It's very idea-rich, and philosophical even, as a talk on architectural creativity in part. This single 5 minute video makes me wonder how, not only to offer idea-rich thinking courses with professors and teachers, but especially how to 'Google-ize' all of edX further for our WUaS students, and in ways that WUaS might eventually offer for courses toward Bachelor and PhD programs. So I was glad recently to learn in an email from you that edX is planning to develop some in the Google platform re I think WUaS G Suite for Education, and re the edX-WUaS Dashboard developments for WUaS matriculating students and more (possibly ~200 countries, possibly matriculating WUaS students from 7,117 known living languages, - and even brainstorming-wise, for all 7.8 billion people on planet as wiki teachers and learners - which is what WUaS is planning on our wiki side, some of whom could take edX courses too. Perhaps such "Google-ization" of edX courses will further happen as edX develops in part in WUaS G Suite for Education re edX dashboard questions - and even as a form of "regulated oversight," thanks to AI and Google's information technologies (in addition to WUaS planning for licensing and accrediting with BPPE and WASC in CA).
In talking with Larry yesterday evening about your great email with WUaS PhD possibilities anew, and this edX course spreadsheet, we initially wondered how our prospective PhD students could SELECT the courses that might INTEREST THEM (from the beginning even of their studies - to get them planning their own learning paths, and facilitating their own development of their own agency) for initially at least the first two years of their PhD program, and given one student in India's expressed interest in majoring in cognitive science, I wondered to Larry in what ways Prasanth, for example, could select from both of the following -
https://www.edx.org

ocw.mit.edu
But WUaS would need to hire graduate student instructors in the autumn of 2021 to teach the MIT OCW cognitive science courses ( eg from https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/brain-and-cognitive-sciences/), for example, since there don't seem to be many in edX presently, and MIT OCW also doesn't seem to translate readily or easily onto the edX platform.

In fact, I've already invited our 4 prospective graduate students, and undergraduates too, to begin to search through these 2 catalogs to find and choose - agency-wise again - courses they might be interested in learning:
"If you might be interested in free-to-students' online CC-4 MIT OCW-centric degrees, and as the beginning of the potential process, please begin to explore these two catalogs - edX and MIT OCW - with regard to what courses you might be interested in, especially in the first 2 years." Larry and I will talk further about this in the next few days - regarding planning for our students matriculating May 1 and September 1, 2021, and choosing their courses for their studies. We'll also talk about core classes WUaS seeks to have students take, like an inspiring Reed College Hum 110 class (re the Greeks, Classics, writing, the emergence of so much creativity in cultures of learning) and newly possibly on something like the edX platform (in addition to WUaS distribution requirements). And I also have a Reed College undergraduate education with the conference method (think seminar, but in remarkable ways) in mind, as WUaS develops - and toward a flourishing culture of learning.
I'm wondering if it makes sense to return back to our 6 planned undergraduate majors - EECS, General Science, General Engineering, English literature, History & Business - from the 29 majors that Larry outlined here anew - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - based on the edX catalog some months ago, however. What do you think, as we begin to plan for edX building the edX-WUaS dashboard in WUaS G Suite for Education? I newly, on behalf of WUaS, have a Google Workspace workshop on March 23, which in itself is momentous (like this your PhD email).
I'm thinking also that an edX registration link like - https://courses.edx.org/register - but for WUaS might be part of this process, - and with transcripts, honor code, statement students will observe the laws of their countries and USA laws, and other aspects of a very easy get into a degree program at WUaS application because students are interested.

Thank you again for this great opportunity for WUaS PhD degrees in particular from edX's perspective.
All the best, Scott

I also think Anant knows the language of both prospective PhD students from India, Prasanth and Chinmay, much better than I do, since he came from India to do his PhD at Stanford, and he's a MIT Professor of EECS, and sees what's possible with edX especially. (Could he even somehow have suggested to Prasanth to choose a cognitive science PhD focus?)
Thank you, Matthew!

Matthew GuschingAttachmentsTue, Mar 9, 4:26 PM (1 day ago)to Larry, meHello Scott,
If it's helpful for your questions of curriculum, I have included our must updated course catalog for your review. In column P, we have a listing of the difficulty of the program and column AB holds the values for the subject the course would be most applicable. For how WUaS recognizes credit for an edX course for bachelor or PhD programs would be naturally up to your criteria and regulated oversight. However, the catalog can be referenced to give an idea of courses in subject areas for different levels of students.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Medianthro] thoughts provoked by discussion on effects

Thanks, John, M.E., Debra, Medianthro, All,
Seeking succinctness too re this interesting thread:

AFor John,
what is a (media) effect?
example -
"this very e-seminar we are in the process of collaboratively enacting via the internet" ... "this digital practice has had the long-term effect of co-constituting the Media Anthropology Network as we know it today"
Word-wise, effect seems in part to be a 'consequence,' or to be 'constitutional' ...

Appreciating the anthropological focus on the specificity here of (media) effects, which we might learn through field work in a field site even - re John's observation that this conversation is "about media practices and their effects only, not about media effects in general"
And furthermore, that  “effects of media-related practices in people’s social worlds” arguing that “these come in three main varieties –mediatising effects, worlding effects and derivative effects.”
But what about further the role of specific pictures and videos and virtual world conversations? (I ask with regard to understanding further the effects of 'ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy' - a social theory and method I'm developing - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy).

BFound interesting M.E. - Mirjam's bringing Manuel Castells into this thread (re the discourse of "communication indeed as a vector of change" - and presumably as an effect as well), and regarding Castells' far-reaching focus on power in the information age, where John seems to focus little on questions of power. What is power for Manuel Castells?
"Power in the Network Society" Chapter 1 in #Castells' "Communication Power" 2009/2013:10) "Power is the relational capacity that enables a social actor to influence asymmetrically the decisions of other social actor(s) in ways that favor the empowered actor's will, interests & values...by coercion"

Power in the Network Society (#Castells' "Communication Power" 2013:10) "Power is the relational capacity that enables a social actor to influence asymmetrically the decisions of other social actor(sO in ways that favor the empowered actor's will, interests & values..by coercion"

— Scott_GK_MacLeod_WUaS_worlduniversityandschool.org (@scottmacleod) March 10, 2021
 (https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1369756055232647168?s=20)

and further ... "Power is exercised by means of coercion (or the possibility of it) and/or by the construction of meaning on the basis of the discourses through which social actors guide their actions. Power relationships are framed by domination, which is the power that is embedded in the institutions of society."

How might we examine John's example of this MediaAnthro conversation's effects as potentially informing questions of change as a developing MediaAnthro network, and re power, and the information we share in conversation, as we analyze these questions further and anthropologically??

CAppreciating too in this thread Debra's focus on discourse, I think, regarding that we "widen our understanding of culture + fields of meaning making/experience. This move allows us to also widen our inquiry into ‘effects’ and more robustly capture what is going on.  [supporting all that John, Mirjam are others are saying on this thread]."
Regarding effects of 'ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy' - into a single realistic virtual earth for Anthropology at the cellular and atomic levels too (think Google Street View with time slider with Maps and Earth with TensorFlow AI and Translate, conceptually, and realistic avatar bots, even for actual-virtual telerobotic surgery),
#RealisticVirtualEarthForAnthropology
https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForAnthropology?src=hashtag_click

#RealisticVirtualEarthForArchaeology
https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForArchaeology?src=hashtag_click

... in what ways could we 'widen our understanding of culture,' per this MediaAnthro e-seminar on effects, with the use of emergent 'text-in-the-sidebar' in Google Street View regarding all the field sites we've mentioned from war in the Sahel in Africa to Harbin Hot Springs in northern California? ... to move beyond the consequences of text even - eg the word 'effects' in these email threads - and to encompass the whole around each of us in an emerging, we wiki-create it, virtual earth, with ethnographic interpretations via the group-making, heteroglossic, polysemic processes (Jim Clifford +) of postmodernity, into 'Internetity,' a word I'm coin-ing to characterize the information age - and to understand further specific effects?

5 UC Berkeley Anthropology talks touching on some of the above - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/12/doubledays-hummingbird-cynanthus.html -
and newly exploring the effects of ongoing creation of an actual-virtual #RealisticVirtualHarbin Hot Springs as ethnographic field site for comparison ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~
https://www.amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity ~

Thank you, John, for furthering this conversation about effects ...

M.E. -

"May be this discussion is related to the discussion of Power. Communication Power is the title of the book of Manuel Castells (introduction hard to read) that in fact directs us to see communication indeed as a vector of change. This power dimension is not so present in the discussion so far. The other dimension is information, and information flows. Information is captured in discourse, and discourse in itself has power. Media practices are part of power constellations and at the same time transforming those, a.o. by the use of information that is caught in discourses (mediating information) who in themselves also have power and the power to change. Then the effect of media practices can indeed be very deep and in some cases scary, as it is difficult to grasp."

Hi Craig, Susan, Reedies' extended friends' community, All, (and am trying Mike's math.sdsu.edu email address since I've been getting bouncebacks from sciences.sdsu.edu ...email)
I'm glad to have heard back from Reed College professor emeritus of sociology Bill Tudor positively (having removed him and a few other people's emails per their requests):  https://www.reed.edu/sociology/faculty/index.html He is a former professor of mine there too, and regarding CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School planned in 200 countries and 7117 living languages, for free university degrees, and as wiki schools for open teaching and learning :)
Thanks for a quick response, Scott, and for your informative letter as well. The project you describe sounds interesting and valuable. I've imagined related aspirations occasionally, and I appreciate your invitation to share any thoughts of possible interest. If something occurs to me along those lines, I'll remember to let you know. Here's hoping it works out well for all concerned.

Amazing too that that WUaS will be able to begin offering free-to-students' online MIT OCW-centric and edX-centric (7 year PhDs) this autumn - per recent emails from our WUaS edX representative - in addition to online free-to-students' Bachelor degrees (as WUaS plans for licensing and accreditation with BPPE and WASC in CA)! Is this a new approach a new form of cooperative communities ?
World Univ & Sch is also wiki ... and how best to create flourishing cultures of learning and conversation in all 7117 known living languages (thinking beyond Wikipedia), where people can become wiki-teachers and learners in fields they love and know and which may be very unique too?
Next new cooperative community opportunity is on Monday in

Hi All, Universitians,

I just blogged about these infinite 'Pi' questions here today - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/03/middle-santiam-wilderness-oregon.html. These online, higher education, CC-4 MIT OCW-centric degrees at World University and School will be free for students, - and are planned in all ~200 countries and in their official and main languages.

Pi Day - MIT

Dear Larry, Tito, Jayni, Yuping, Juan, Julian,
Greetings!
World Univ & Sch is waiting to hear back from WUaS's edX representative about both 1) a way for our undergraduates (150-500), ~4 years to completion, to apply to WUaS, something like this  -
https://courses.edx.org/register  - but for WUaS applications, and including transcripts, honor code, student statement of observing laws in their country, and in the USA, now online, etc. ...

as well as for 2) the possibility for our 4 prospective PhD students (~7 year time to completion) to apply ...
WUaS PhD candidacy opportunities via edX at first, and beginning this autumn would be SO GREAT.

With things moving forward, I wonder if our edX representative brings the question of WUaS PhDs via edX (begin with the last year of a edX 4 year 'advanced' Bachelor degree classes, - as first year of a WUaS Master's toward a PhD ? ...) to MIT EECS Prof Anant Agarwal and CEO of edX who then brings these questions to MIT culture of decision makers, such as even Fast company, and re edX's mission ...

Much of the Middle Santiam Wilderness is forested with mature stands of old growth estimated to be 450 years old and 200 feet (61 m) tall.[2] Douglas-firwestern redcedar and western hemlock grow at lower elevations and true firs near the ridgelines. Native fish populations, including Chinook salmon during spawning season, thrive in both the Santiam River and Donaca Lake.[1][2]

Just tried this Beta on App Lab, and the interaction design is REALLY fun and smart. I love the usage of these hash components to organize pieces, and the puzzles themselves are super unique.

Very nice to be in communication with you. Thanks so so much for the picture and note, Nadia - with your husband Elliott and in front of a pool, and as a teacher in the DC area! (Good to know too that emails are going through!:) Thanks too for your text messages, Craig!
Have blogged about some of this cooperative thinking here, - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/03/bwindi-impenetrable-forest-uganda.html - and much more regarding augmented reality, and genetic engineering too! Along these genetic engineering lines, how viable will aging reversal genetic drug therapies become (and thanks in part to the coronavirus pandemic), I wonder?

Here's Harvard Medical School / MIT Professor of Genetics' George Church in a minute long video - "How soon could humans reverse the aging process with genetic engineering?"
https://youtu.be/bnCEIPQFNnk

(See, too, the longevity label in my blog, albeit 'aging reversal' is a better term for this - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/longevity - and when will some of us culture and language-bearing human primates begin to live longer than 122 years of age, re Jeanne Calment, who was the oldest documented living person I've heard of).

Will we be able to revisit Reed in a #realisticvirtualearthforhistory - https://twitter.com/hashtag/realisticvirtualearthforhistory?src=hashtag_click - and interact with avatar bots from the early 1980s there in conversation even? :)

Hi Ma,
Good to have heard from Craig Thom yesterday. He's an old housemate from Reed and a friend, and interesting,
having become a doctor of osteopathy (DO) in recent years,
having grown up in southern California,
having written his Reed thesis on Flannery O'Conner's sometimes absurd or 'southern gothic' literature,
having played classical piano well, - and while at Reed having had a great interest in Waldorf education and Anthroposophy
... And he taught in Waldorf schools for around 2 decades
... A west coast dweller, his father was a minister in southern CA whom I met, and who lived thru the '60s and 70s there, and Craig is also insightful as a teacher I think, and is oriented to helping people, almost pastorally I wanna write
...about 5 Reed friends and housemates went into Waldorf education - something about it culturally attracted these Reedies, but I find Craig sympatico, And he knows well the culture I lived in at Reed (which was formative if unique)
... Craig saso appreciates I think my friend S.T., her radiance or beauty, and our connection at the time even ... Hmmm ... I can learn from Craig today although we're not that much in communication (could I meet a life partner through him - or learning from his modeling re his wife Par?)
... He initiated a texting conversation with me re a Reed College collapse of gym roofs (what might folks have been doing there?)  which I've included here ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/03/bwindi-impenetrable-forest-uganda.html?m=0 ... and may include more of our conversation ... Could he also be in touch too with people or organizations who supported his medical education (???uniformed services speculatively???) re me somehow and re Reed too (where I've whistle blown about ethics' issues in recent years), as I develop WUaS even? Could any of this have catalyzed his texting me somehow? C'est possible ...Desiderata again ...
WUaS News and Q&A begins in about 1.5 hours, Ma ... Am taking a bit of a leadership role in all of this and as a non-theist Friendly Quaker 'leading' - but from 'out in left field' (baseball metaphor) in quite a few ways, but where there's freedom and space out in left field as well :) ... but which is also kind of a singular role (am alone in this in some ways, I feel, yet Larry is present also and others) ... even as I seek to grow an organization, a university, many universities and schools, a team, many groups of teams ...
Good to have walked again (up to the UU Church) yesterday evening ... And perhaps Friends and UU thinking (Harbin, and Hippy Yoga too, NtF too) - but much my own thinking - are informing WUaS ... All kinda unique or singular ... Good too to have bagpiped again last night ... am seeking to begin practicing (bagpipes and piano!) earlier in the day however ...
What are you up to this week besides your new 'New Yorker' magazine class? Sounds like it could be a literature class too ')
Hope you have a good day too :)
Love, Scott

Hi Craig, Brooklyn St House Friends, Reedies, Reed College community folks, All,
These attached pictures just popped up today in Google Photo on my smartphone, And I thought you might enjoy seeing them ... How are you all doing?
Thanks Craigly for text messaging yesterday morning out of the blue from Anacortes, Washington, and sharing your beautiful garden picture with artichokes, corn and poppies from last summer (which garden is thriving - thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and time at home for gardening & physical movement even )! :)

The pictures are rom March 2008 on a visit to Reed College (and eastern Oregon near La Grande I think to visit family)

Looks like Alpha Farm is still happening in the Intentional Community directory - https://www.ic.org/directory/alpha-farm/ - and which began around 1973 using secular 'Quaker' decision making re Friends' monthly business meeting I think Founded by Caroline Estes and 3 other hippies leaving the Philadelphia Quaker world

Craig's and my textings from yesterday :) - thanks Craigly for texting!
Craig - The gym roofs at Reed collapsed in the snow last month. My heart breaks as I remember being there

Scott -Hi Craig - sounds dramatic, and it's where Carla teaches ... The Performing Arts Center could be a model for a rebuild? Time for Reed perhaps to go 'virtual' re gym though? Could the impoverished MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch collaborate in this I wonder? (But Reed seems to have a number of serious ethical issues, about which I've whistle blown in the past year or two ... and I've asked to be off their mailing lists ... Hope they come to observe the law).  How are you? -Scott

(And apparently the axolotl salamander species has the remarkable ability to regenerate severed limbs, ! )
So, here's Stewart Brand (editor of the Whole Earth Catalog in the late '1960s ... ) - retweeted on George Church's Twitter - saying the Harvard Medical School is hiring someone to raise eventually extinct wooly mammoths -

Want a full time biotech job to revive the Woolly Mammoth and eventually restore the species to the northern wild?

We're hiring. Details at the link and below.https://t.co/1SDsT3onbO pic.twitter.com/bkCKs6Eief

https://twitter.com/stewartbrand/status/1367170240841326592?s=20  (https://twitter.com/geochurch and Stanford Law Prof and genetics' expert had retweeted this too!) - for $75,000 per year plus $25,000 for expenses. Wow that's a lot of money ....
What would happen if one could bioengineer extinct woolly mammoth tusks, like in Stewart Brand's picture, into living elephants, and as much woolly mammoth further DNA ... WILD WILD WILD ... like the axolotl-bird picture from Dario Taroborelli (a former Wikipedia senior person too, originally from Italy)
So how would this work in a single realistic virtual earth for species? And how about in this 1 realistic virtual earth for genetics at cell and molecular levels to actually do the same bioengineering / editing that created the  axolotl-bird .... wild ... (and re aging reversal genetic drugs, will we even be able to give such creatures as the AXOLOTL-BIRD hybrid a syringe of aging reversal drug, and make it grow younger ... if not into a baby, let along an embryonic form).
And will WUaS students too be able to create with the Scratch drag and drop programming language newly AUGMENTED REALITY in POKEMON GO computer gaming of AXOLOTLs in brand new species-related ways? Do some Do It Yourself bioengineering themselves eventually too - and even on themselves, and with aging reversal genetic engineering? Who knows?

Hi Ed, Ma, Marc, Pin, Tym, Jim,

Thanks so much for visiting me in Canyon 94516, Ed, Ma, Pin, Tym, (Marc & Jim virtually in a sense too).
And I would love to see herds of genetically engineered Wooly Mammoths in adjacent-to-Canyon-94516-at-670-Ridgecrest Indian Valley, which DNA has been bioengineered with living species of pachyderms (https://twitter.com/TerenceLeungSF/status/1368420110818406402?s=20) eg for Wooly Mammoth tusks, size perhaps, and as many interesting Wooly Mammoth adaptations as possible, for learnings' sake. ... as PokemonGo augmented reality especially!
What have been the mammals that have roamed these California landscapes over the last 2 million years - and could we see them in a realistic virtual earth for evolutionary biology - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForEvolutionaryBiology?src=hashtag_click - and play PokemonGo too .. .and make new Augmented Reality as well ? But perhaps such individual wooly mammoths, and also herds of genetically engineered Wooly Mammoths, could take the form of ACTUAL-VIRTUAL pachyderms-ExtinctWoolyMammoths in the back of my REI Glacier Glasses and as newly engineered as Digital Masks - regarding Materials' Science advances - in order for scientists and VR-researchers to be able to work with and study living elephants with mammoth DNA in Indian Valley (from wherever the actual genetically engineered elephants might be ... eg in Africa or in India even or in the San Diego Zoo) ... and even as holograms, as hologram herds. Walpole Wilderness Area (Australia): Paradigm Shift? ... in the information age and between nation states, (such as between the US and China)? ~ an interesting Stanford-Harvard book talk about ""The Dragon, the Eagle, and the Private Sector" * * * Manuel

Paradigm Shift?

... in the information age and between nation states, (such as between the US and China)?

*

Asked yesterday in an interesting Stanford-Harvard book talk about ""The Dragon, the Eagle, and the Private Sector" with a former president of Harvard, at its close, the following:

"How might the following 'Network Society' Paradigm Shift, as system, which has 5 aspects (below) inform relations between the 'Dragon' and the 'Eagle,' regarding your theorizing in the book, and regarding its building of the railroads +, as well as transparency +, - now thanks to the explosion of the Internet in economics, society, and governance?

Thank you so much for this excellent book and conversation, Scott GK MacLeod (sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org)"

Regarding collaborative governments and governance between China and the US, I'm reminded of UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus Manuel Castells' theses regarding the Information Age and the related 'Network Society' Paradigm Shift, as system, which has 5 aspects:

1. It's about information generation

2. It's pervasive - it invades & influences every domain of socioeconomic activity

3. It's characterized by networking: mentalities, companies, people network, & create synergies, based around knowledge generation

4. Flexibility is key - the system is such that it reorganizes, and reprograms its components, without disintegration

5. The technological convergence that has occurred is an integrating system (http://socinfotech.pbworks.com/w/page/30668686/InfoTechSoc4_2010FA)

(I realize Summers is controversial, regarding the following:

"What Larry Summers Said

Bowing to faculty demands, Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers on Thursday released a transcript of his controversial remarks on women and science. He did so while releasing yet another apology for those remarks and as the head of the Harvard Corporation released a statement backing Summers."

Stanford Law CodeX - 3/4/21 - [codex_group_meetings] TODAY! CodeX Mtg (3/4 @1.30p PT): WAL; Algorithmic Fairness; "May it Please the Bot" (via Zoom)

Dear Roland, Rolf, Paolo, Phillipp, Gabe, Jameson,

Thank you for your excellent and far-reaching presentations today which should appear here soon - https://www.youtube.com/user/stanfordlawschool/videos .
From related online questions: And thank you, Rolf and Paolo, for your great Stanford Law CodeX presentation! Talk further about Switzerland Law Sch https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Switzerland)? Best, Scott (scottmacleod.com - worlduniversityandschool.org - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States
*Philllipp, thanks too for your US centric presentation - fascinating: How about taking a ~200 countries’ approach, in their official and main languages, and adjust models with time, based on developing societal contexts and history?

(And privately in Zoom -
Thanks for your great presentation, Phillipp - I’d be interested in following up in email. Would that be alright? (America is seeking to create justice for historical wrongs in an ongoing way - and with the emergence of AI). Thank you, Scott (sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org)

Further, the model of reifying or “thingifying’ certain fungible concepts and language, now with AI, is one of my concerns).

*

Thanks, Jameson and Gabe, for your great focus! Re Heidi Sass’s GDocs’ question, how best to plan for saving such legal judgments, and regarding, for example, (even) ~200 countries' governments (re planning for social justice in NLP here too, and comparatively), and creating some kind of independent entities (from a company, for ex.)?  The fungibility of digital data judgements compared WITH PAPER, for example, and such new kinds of legal judgments / decisions are at stake here. So, how to plan for Governments or independent entities to solve this? Universities? (Wouldn't governments be much better than companies and universities re social justice and fairness, newly with AI?)
And again, Am glad to announce that -
MIT OCW-centric World Univ & Sch, in partnering officially with edX, is seeking to matriculate 150-500 undergraduates this autumn 2021 for free-to-students' CC-4 OCW-centric online Bachelor (4 year) degrees in English first, and newly WUaS PhD degrees online, too (Online law schools in each of ~200 countries and in their official / main languages to follow). All the best, Scott (sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org)

Thank you all so much!

Dear Roland, Rolf, Paolo, Phillipp, Gabe, Jameson,

Here's the Codex video which I just found posted - CodeX Weekly Meeting | March 4, 2021
https://youtu.be/kRGRSKl87c0

... Somehow thiago.valente@meupaug.com.br didn't go through (incorrect email spelling? - & can't also seem to copy and paste the emails that presenters put into chat for some reason in some weeks recently)

Thanks Rolf for connecting in Linked In, and here's my related 'big' - regarding legal questions especially - question in response in LI, and regarding a single digital currency in all 200 countries to alleviate poverty via Universal Basic Income experiments, and planned for speakers of all 7117 known living languages, and then, brainstorming-wise for all 7.8 billion people on the planet:
"Thanks, Rolf, as well! With Switzerland's 4 languages, and cultures, and your spelling of Txs, possibly re taxes, it makes me think Switzerland might be a good place to focus on WUaS tax questions re our Law Schools + in 200 countries ... and maybe even re WUaS facilitating a single worldwide cryptocurrency, such as Stanford Mine Pi - and distributed via UBI experiments too - to alleviate poverty among all 7.8 people in 200 countries and in 7,117 known living languages - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/UBI see /Switzerland as well). Best regards, and thanks, Scott"

Thanks again for your email replies, and excellent presentations. Since MIT has neither a law school nor a medical school - to share its CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare courses (which CC-4 MIT OCW wiki World Univ & Sch is seeking to build upon) - WUaS is seeking to collaborate with Stanford Law for something like open course ware for our WUaS free-to-students' planned online law schools in all 200 countries (per Olympics) - and regarding the beginning online WUaS law schools I shared in the last email.

Best regards, ScottHave blogged a bit about this, and more, here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/03/walpole-wilderness-area-australia.html -

Pike National Forest (CO): the edX-WUaS partnership is developing! * Seeking to send out with the upcoming WUaS Minutes for the WUaS Monthly Business Meeting last Saturday a link from edX for undergraduate applications, and one for prospective PhD student

the edX-WUaS partnership is developing!

February 23, 2021

Hi Matthew (and Larry),

I hope this email finds you well.
I would love to be able to send out with the upcoming WUaS Minutes for the WUaS Monthly Business Meeting last Saturday a link from edX for undergraduate applications, and one for prospective PhD student applications (to individuals MIT departments??? ... who might end up midstream only taking a Master's degree). in addition to my other questions in the 3-4 most recent emails. Thank you so much for your replies so far, Matthew! If possible, WUaS would seek to begin some of this in the May 1, 2021 WUaS term (especially for preparation for a degree program) and for the September 1, 2021 4 month term.
Just filled out a MIT Tech Review Insights' Newsletter poll and found it a helpful focus, idea-wise, for development of WUaS. I've posted some of my responses below for your insight into their language in the poll.
Please take this short poll and let us know what you think.
I responded that it's "Critically important" to this following question, and in relation to our upcoming matriculating WUaS students, - * 7. How important were achieving the following goals to your digital transformation strategy?
More efficient and responsive customer experience delivery
Not at all important Less important Somewhat important Critically important

More efficient and responsive customer experience delivery - Critically important

Thank you much, ScottAgenda & News for 2/20/21 open WUaS Monthly Business Meeting - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/02/dicotyledon.html

February 16, 2021 -

February 9, 2021Dear Matthew,
I hope this finds you well.
Thank you for the clarification. HOW would the integration with Google's WUaS' G Suite for Education work with edX for grades etc., with our WUaS plans to build out in WUaS Opencura WikiBase/Wikidata's 300 languages, and for matriculating Universitian students and WUaS wiki editors in all 200 countries, conceptually here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University - (and in planning for WUaS wiki teachers and learners in all 7117 known living languages) ?
And would you be able please to include Larry Viehland in our communications each time, since he's chair of the Board at World University and School? Viehland@chatham.edu is his email address. Thanks.
WUaS is still seeking funding. So is WUaS and edX still talking about ~ $17,000 per 50 students per year? And what please would be the next steps and costs to sign the edX-WUaS partnership agreement? (And would you please lay all of these out in writing)? Also, from you edX perspective, could WUaS matriculate 150 undergraduate students (and potentially at least 4 PhD students working toward their Master's degrees) September 1, taking engaging edX courseware which helps with student retention, in 29 majors (licensable be BPPE and accredit-able by WASC), for a first year out of 4 years' college?
Thank you,Scott
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation

PSHere are some ideas for where WUaS would like to head with a single science subject from our WUaS CC-4 MIT OCW-centricity (for reimbursement reasons from countries) to edX and beyond, first in English then in other languages with machine translation (some of which will happen in a realistic virtual earth in the Google ecosystem too) ...

Hi Scott,
I hope my note finds you well. I was on holiday when your email came in and happy to address your questions. Regarding a question about an interface with edX and your platform, it would not be my colleague Ned, but we have members of the edX Solutions Architect team that can work with you develop a custom integration with your platform. This integration leverages our tool-kit of integration options, which can include course discovery, SSO, and the metadata for grading and student progress. Ultimately, the extent of what is possible would occur when meeting with our technical team.

To address the questions about MIT application process and survey, while MIT is a founder of edX, edX is a separate entity and we do not oversee the admission aspects of MIT. Apologies if I misunderstood that question or missed any others.
Thank you,
Matthew

March 5, 2021

Hi Matthew, (Larry),

I hope this email finds you well, and thanks so much for getting back to me again. I'm glad, too, the edX-WUaS partnership is making progress (toward signing the partnering documents). And I'm glad also the edX Solutions Architect team is next to communicate with you. As you know, WUaS is seeking to matriculate 150-500 Bachelor's degrees' students as early as potentially May 1, 2021, and WUaS has 4 prospective PhD students, who may seek to begin their WUaS-edX studies then too (and WUaS is seeking further PhD applicants, first in English).
Regarding edX for business, licensing and accreditation will be invaluable: So California's Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE), whose Dianne A said in Feb 2019 that they could license WUaS for PhD as well as Bachelor degrees, is an accreditation agency, along with WASC, that WUaS seeks to engage, but the issues are complicated with students in all 200 countries and in so many ways - so this is something WUaS continues to have in mind re edX courses as well, but is currently on the back burner. And leaving aside the many issues involved with BPPE / WASC for now, eg students' identity verification, proctoring of tests - in addition to grades - and the list is long regarding BPPE / WASC (https://twitter.com/CaBPPE - https://twitter.com/wascsenior), WUaSs' focus is on students' reimbursement from all ~200 countries, first in English, and then in these ~200 countries and in their official and main languages. So WUaS is simply seeking to get off the ground and matriculate students beginning, if possible for preparatory courses, in May 2021, and for degree programs on September 1, 2021.
As you may have read in my recent emails to you, WUaS would seek to let our prospective PhD and Bachelor degrees' students know, as soon as possible, about how they could apply to WUaS to matriculate as early as this May 1, 2021 (for preparatory course work, eg English as a second language, possibly learning a programming language, eg with Scratch etc), and perhaps with a single URL from edX, and for 29 WUaS Bachelor degree majors. And could edX now develop this for our prospective WUaS PhD students too? So, and to reiterate, and since you said in our last video conference that edX has Master's degree courses, and in your last email that WUaS PhD students won't be applying through MIT departments (thanks to your and Larry's communications), would it be possible please to inquire with the edX Solutions Architect team if WUaS could develop an initially edX-WUaS application process for both Bachelor and PhD degrees? I just reached out to prospective WUaS PhD candidates with the following:
"Hi Prasanth, and prospective WUaS PhD candidates, ...I just received these PhilPapers' philosophy items, and one synopsis mentioned cognitive science, which I thought might interest you.Best wishes, Scott-worlduniversityandschool.org
( ... where Prasanth is interested in studying toward a PhD in cognitive science, and beyond developing WUaS in the Tamil language - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Tamil_language - in Tamil),
Introduction to Philosophy of Science.
Carlos Mariscal - forthcoming - In Benjamin D. Young & Carolyn Dicey Jennings (eds.), Mind, Cognition, and Neuroscience. This chapter will be a brief survey of the concepts from general philosophy of science for those interested in cognitive science. It covers several major topics in the philosophy of science: scientific explanation and underdetermination, reductionism and levels of nature, and scientific realism. We will discuss the goals of science, the methods of science, and the most plausible interpretations of science. To demonstrate the importance of these topics, the chapter includes cases in which confusion over these issues has led scientists astray. These cases include instances in which cognitive neuroscience has failed to discover adequate explanations for phenomena, when previously established research did not withstand further scrutiny, and the increasingly complex and bewildering interrelationship between the study of the mind and the study of the brain and its parts. These issues are common to many areas of science, but they can be particularly fraught in a field like cognitive neuroscience, as researchers from a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds and research foci come together to develop a systematic understanding of the mind.
Thanks for your email, Prasanth. Cognitive science questions, and the English language, come together with precision and careful thought in other academic disciplines like philosophy (in the English language) - and will do so probably in Tamil too (if such questions, thinking, cognitive science, brain science, etc. aren't emerging in Tamil already). There's much both to read in English in cognitive science, as well as create digitally. Am a bit concerned that Tamil machine translation isn't far enough along science-wise to facilitate ease of learning from English ... but maybe it will develop rapidly in the future.

Am hoping you can apply for a WUaS PhD program, beginning September 1, 2021, with preparatory edX courses beginning May 1, 2021 even. But it looks as if you may apply through edX rather than through MIT departments, per an email yesterday.
Waiting to hear back from edX about next steps and even something like an URL for prospective Bachelor (150-500?) and PhD degree (where WUaS currently has 4 possible applicants) students to apply to WUaS, for May 1, and September 1, 2021.
Best wishes, Scott
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Tamil%20language - "

Matthew, while WUaS has been in G Suite for Education since 2015 or so, I'm very glad to write that on March 23 - for the first time ever - WUaS will participate in a "Get Started with Google Workspace for Education." Would there be a way please to interoperate this with the edX Solutions Architect team - and with edX for Business goals especially (and even regarding a generative self-sovereign internet - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/02/xoloitzcuintle-mexican-hairless-dog.html - which may be one of edX CEO Anant Agarwal's education goals too)? (As you may know, WUaS seeks to code for all 7.8 billion people on the planet - and potentially in G Suite for Education or similar - initially for students to apply, and matriculate, and for transcripts, etc., and especially for reimbursement from all 200 countries' governments (per Olympics), and even regarding their counties - for their 'Olympic students').
So, would it be possible please - in your communications with the edX Solutions Architect team - to inquire if it's possible to get a single URL for WUaS Bachelor and PhD students to apply with (something like - https://courses.edx.org/register - but with information that a Bachelor's degree will take 4 years and a PhD will take 7 years average time to completion - re retention questions and high achieving students making commitment - and regarding also an honor code, and with student acknowledgement that matriculated students will observe the developing laws of their countries and US etc in the information age), and for WUaS to announce or share this URL in our WUaS Agenda and News for Monthly Business Meeting, probably to send out on March 18th, and also in the our 3/20/21 WUaS Monthly Business Meeting Minutes following this?
Thank you so much, Matthew.
