Chamaenerion angustifolium: Stanford Law CodeX, Brazil in Portuguese, Helping the Poor, Law Schools at World University and School (planned in main languages in them) * * * Hi my Wonderful Mother . . . Pretty good Yoga asana exploring this morning ... * *

Dear André, Karl, Liz, Charlotte, Roland,

Thanks for your great CodeX presentations - https://law.stanford.edu/2021/02/03/codex-meeting-february-4th-2021/ - which I newly found online in video the day after your shared:
CodeX Weekly Meeting | February 4, 2021
https://youtu.be/e1EYZeMOIUg

André, I asked this in the text chat: "Thanks so much for your excellent presentation, Andre. Besides in the Portuguese language, in what ways does or could JusPredict’s "Case Outcome Prediction for Brazilian Courts," engage or could it plan for the other approximately 228 languages in Brazil - and even as potential customers or markets? Is Portuguese, as the official language, the only legal language in Brazil? Could you even use, hypothetically, Google Translate in your JusPredict projects to reach other potential customers (eg for human rights, or environmental questions) in Brazil’s languages?"

What do you think?
Karl, Liz, Charlotte, (André too),
In what ways might WUaS's planned law schools in all ~200 countries' languages (planned in 7,117 known living languages too with machine translation - for benefits of law for all esp.) work or collaborate with you to develop brief writing, possibly some case law, articles, and library resources (where WUaS is planning online university and school libraries in all 7,117 languages), and similar, for your project in your thinking about aiding the poor - and with NLP and machine learning too?
From about 1:01:50 you say, Charlotte, re "automated brief writing, and things like that, and so there are some companies that are attempting to build some of this space, but I don't think really with a sort of legal services, low income client, poor lawyer type orientation that we have been talking about. I don't know. So I think goal one is to push out some papers, and as we do that we're thinking about where else we might go."

Brainstorming-wise, here are the beginning law schools at CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School (of which I'm the founder and head), which is planning online free-to-students' CC-4 OCW-centric law degrees, PhDs, Bachelors' degrees, MD degrees, and IB high school diplomas in all ~200 countries (per Olympics) and in their official and main languages - so with a significant focus on helping the poor. And since MIT has neither a law school nor a medical school, World University and School is exploring collaboration with Stanford Law and Medicine in these regards, for something akin to law and medicine open course ware, in 200 countries' main languages.  All 4 of your projects could dovetail amazingly with this:

Law Schools at World University and School (planned in main languages in them)

Afghanistan Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Afghanistan_Law_School_at_WUaS

Brazil Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Brazil_Law_School_at_WUaS

China Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/China_Law_School_at_WUaS

Egypt Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Egypt_Law_School_at_WUaS

India Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/India_Law_School_at_WUaS

Jamaica Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Jamaica_Law_School_at_WUaS

Mexico Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Mexico_Law_School_at_WUaS

World University Law School: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School

How might we best communicate further about this? Thank you
Thanks, and best regards,Scott

From text chat: Charlotte: Let us know, everyone, if we need to explain U.S. summary judgment procedure more to make this make sense!

Summary judgment is a pivotal moment in civil litigation when the judge can make a ruling for one side or the other (and end the case before trial) if the weight of the evidence is overwhelmingly in that party's favor. Either party can move for summary judgment.
So there's an opening brief by the moving party, then an opposing brief, then a reply and an optional surreply.

Charlotte Alexander (Georgia State University) to Everyone (2:17 PM)
Then the judge rules.  The briefs contain recitations of the facts and citations to precedential cases.

Hi my Wonderful Mother

Hi my wonderful mother,

Pretty good Yoga asana exploring this morning ... in thinking about the 4-week course beginning on Sunday with Angela (and possibly Victor) streaming in from Greece.
Good lesson last night with Taylor ...
Water goes off from 9:30a - 12:30 or until Navin says it's back on, due to some plumber's work apparently ... so I'm washing my sheets now, having washed a load of clothes last night.
Seeking a life partner via circulating, and also perhaps putting the 'word' out (in one way or another, ie messaging, thinking, etc.), continues ... an American could have appeal, a MD too, someone I connect with naturally (like with S & A and some other wonderful friends in the past) and someone wonderful (like you:)
Seeking to stay safe and even through the decades ahead (re unethical behavior like potentially from N Graburn ... ) and by using language, since California law always seems to be in flux, and international law & law between countries, has a lot of interstices, for example.
Fascinating genetic engineering below, suggesting we know the anatomy (of species' bodies - phenotypes) of their genomes pretty well now (a map of the effects of A T G C - https://www.genome.gov/about-genomics/fact-sheets/Deoxyribonucleic-Acid-Fact-Sheet ) ... will we be able, for example, to genetically engineering something for my eustachian tube dysfunction in an analogous or parallel way, since I think the issues is at the cellular and 'street view' levels too ... like this bird-amphibian ...
Appreciating George Alexander further, and his focus on hope in 'sophistication' - in this complex knowledge world we live in (but I'd add some moral and ethical orientation, since he was as a MD Lacanian psychoanalytic psychiatrist self-identified as 'amoral' ... appreciating how much philosophical thought he gave to so many words in English, and a bit in French ). And what can conscious 'thinking' - per George esp. - add to the Desiderata going forward ? What is thinking in this sense, and how for example can it shape one's own agency - philosophically "action or intervention, especially such as to produce a particular effect" also in a sense free will or freedom to choose - (and ethically and morally too)? ... What role does law play here ... and newly with aging reversal and genetic engineering, and re below, the possibility to live for many many more decades that we might have otherwise thought?
What are you up to today, Ma?
Sending love, Scott

SF Bay Area

Dear Ma, Nancy, Greg, Henry, Ed,

Learned further in my first piano lesson in many years about the FM add-on idea for real-real time music making (and which video recording has Patti's knowledge of it - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/02/yukon.html - at the beginning). It could be worth exploring (and without ethernet) ... Not sure about the range of faster FM frequency than the internet (I think) or latency / lag ... but Berkeley < > Oakland would be a first exploration rather than Hoboken and Wisconsin, for example :) ... and regarding the 2 choirs, including Da Upper Yoopers ;) ... - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/tree-swallow.html?m=0 -

Pretty wild genetics' engineering below with lots of implications, some of which I just shared with my mother, and will likely blog about today :)
See you, Henry, and all Sunday at 8pm ET, 5pm PT :)
Scott

Ma, Nancy, Greg, Henry, Ed,

Speculatively, FM add-on may be 'parking lot range limited' (eg in the covid-19 pandemic, in the information technology / internet revolution) - and possibly in combination with the 180 feet range of a wireless internet router, speed could improve. And could choir voices' signals be easier to transmit than musical instruments???

But how to develop real-real time music-making with less lag or latency than FM, or ethernet cable, and from the SF Bay Area to Wisconsin to Hoboken NY, I wonder, and in a do-it-yourself free way?
Thoughts, ideas, questions, suggestions (Greg?, Sandro? Henry re what you've seen journalistically? anyone?)
Fondly,
Scott

Received recently on paper my 4th book of poetry, "Light, Float, Sit, Watsu ~ Virtually," (although it was published on 1/1/21, and I received a not-for-sale paper copy in early January), - in a new Academic Press at World University and School! which has published 5 books now, the first being ethnography ("Naked Harbin Ethnography") - and just Tweeted the following:
(And I haven't explored very much at all reading my poetry to video or audio, although in my 1st book of poetry, I recorded some of the 'Haiku~ish' at Harbin in Garageband:) ... this could be an interesting generative poetic 'conversation' in the future too - and re 'sound' and the spoken word:)  ):

Scott MacLeod <sgkmacleod@gmail.com>11:43 AM (10 hours ago)to DavidSiouxJanieAlexBarbaraBruceDavidEdHeatherLindaTaylorPattiScottPinGeorgeHughBetsyHenrySandy, RobHi Rob, (All),
Nice to talk the other day (after quite a while), Rob (and since high school in the second half of the 1970s). Glad you're visiting organic groceries in the Connecticut town where you live! Interesting to observe what 'organizations' and 'culture' comes through time from the 1960s and even late 1970s (as I listen to this Allman Bros 1973 - https://youtu.be/DNAmXz8kc6I - as I type). (Congratulations too to Gwyn / you on getting into Harvard Law School!)
Regarding social media and Twitter introducing "a feature that pops people up to the top of the smartphone Twitter screen - allowing me to unfollow them, if I so choose, which I'm doing; are they all illegals somehow? - could be" (see email below too) ... I continue to unfollow 1 or 2 people everyday, and I infer that they could be involved in illegal activities too somehow (so am in agreement with Twitter's coding, possibly, and so far) ... interesting to think about what kind of coding Twitter could be using in its databases.
Appreciating too, in these regards, Gerd Moe-Behrens's recent Tweet - https://twitter.com/GerdMoeBehrens/status/1352770791746711552?s=20 (as a scientist and regarding Twitter too, which is evolving - and social media distributively-wise, where distributed is a key feature of the internet). He's a sophisticated and very ethical I think and knowledgeable synthetic biologist / biological engineer based in Berlin, who is also an Apple programmer, and who wanted very much to emigrate to the US, but which didn't happen; here are some videos of us from 2012 in a Google Hangout in a Stanford Advanced Startups' course - http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm.
Here's Gerd Moe-Behrens's Tweet (as he leaves Twitter fairly completely) with new social media sites -
"Please follow me here:

1) https://minds.com/GerdMB/
2) https://gab.com/gerdmoebehrens
3) https://brighteon.social/@gerdmoebehrens
4) https://parler.com/profile/Gerdmoebehrens032269495176/posts"

https://twitter.com/GerdMoeBehrens/status/1352770791746711552?s=20

Is Gerd a conscientious objector? I think he's familiar with this thinking (https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/conscientious%20objection)
So I'm beginning to head in a further distributed way social media-wise - eg with https://www.minds.com/scottworldunivandsch/ - and re my home page http://scottmacleod.com/ & CV (http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm), which lists many social media sites already.
Does social media / the internet come from the 1960s too? ... & per a course I teach - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html. Yes, in terms of the actual beginnings of distributed digital networks, and counterculture too, and in many other ways ... and how many hours are we all on it per day? So many !
Thoughts about social media strategies? - ... ie for good (and re ethics, morality and similar - am a Castellian in broad strokes here and regarding alternative social movements that arise re countering power, for example ... see his "Networks of Outrage and Hope: Social Movements in the Internet Age" in these regards) - and even regarding developing AI and machine learning?
Regards, Scotthttps://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/1970s

Hi Rob, David,
Nice to talk, Rob!
(Interestingly, Twitter just introduced a feature that pops people up to the top of the smartphone Twitter screen - allowing me to unfollow them, if I so choose, which I'm doing; are they all illegals somehow - could be - and which other large social media cos never built in as a feature, but could even FB's MZ have suggested to Twitter's JD that this would be a good idea for Twitter, and could Twitter have learned from other's mistakes? C'est possible ... all speculatively ... am tuning into ethics' questions in a variety of ways regarding the information technology revolution and society even - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethics and see /Society and IT label too:).
Thanks for talking!

Book Review: Networks of Outrage and Hope: Social Movements in the Internet Age by Manuel Castells

https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/lsereviewofbooks/2016/01/04/book-review-networks-of-outrage-and-hope-social-movements-in-the-internet-age-by-manuel-castells/

In the second edition of Networks of Outrage and Hope: Social Movements in the Internet Age, sociologist Manuel Castells conceptualises the relationship between social movements and the internet age through the notion of ‘the networked social movement’. While the book utilises an admirable empirical dataset and shows deep understanding of the fluidity of contemporary social movements, Helton Levy wonders if Castells’s optimistic vision neglects lingering issues, including state surveillance and the digital divide.

Networks of Outrage and Hope: Social Movements in the Internet Age. 2nd edition. Manuel Castells. Polity. 2015.

Networks of OutrageThe emergence of new social movements has lately become a hot topic, as seen by the recent media popularity of groups such as Occupy or Spain’s IndignadosIn Networks of Outrage and Hope: Social Movements in the Internet Age, sociologist Manuel Castells aims to conceptualise their relation with the Internet, or what he defines as the networked social movement. Author of other famous net-optimistic titles such as The Rise of The Network Society (1996)Castells preaches of a world in which the Internet not only centralises our communicational routines, but also liberates individuals to shape a new autonomy, to reclaim power and to shake the political scene, leading to social change. By coordinating their offline action with other online initiatives, networked social movements could become ‘super counter powers’ that are able to articulate in multiple settings, converge into transnational agendas and achieve an unseen political accountability.

This second edition incorporates recent cases from Brazil, Turkey, Chile and Mexico, before then reintroducing the thesis. The networked social movement appears now as an extended and successful idea, having migrated from screens and streets to a more direct engagement with institutionalised power. Castells firmly believes that Occupy should be read beyond momentum, with its counterparts spreading across very different countries and contexts. The reintroduction of the Arab Spring into this conversation, despite the controversies around its real existence, envisions the networked movement as a universal phenomenon. Castells revisits the case of Tunisia; but instead of people, it is Internet organisations that are at the forefront: ‘The connection between free communication on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter and the occupation of urban space created a hybrid public space of freedom that became a major feature of the Tunisian rebellion’ (23).

In the academic literature, Networks of Outrage and Hope has been much criticised for being more about hope than outrage: firstly, for the technological determinism on which the book grounds its premises, whereas a critical outlook that includes multinational corporations, such as Google, could clarify who actually runs the ‘Internet’. Secondly, for its one-dimensional, compulsory ‘Internet age’, in which ‘people’ actually means ‘users’ whose main fate rests in interacting with machines without objection or resistance. Discomfort with Castells’s triad of online communication, political engagement and power stems from the fact that the networked social movement appears here as a continuation of the networked society, which is itself an unfinished idea: namely, the dependence on sharing experiences to build meaning and then forming associations. Ordinary citizens would only need to follow this track in order to suddenly break into power: ‘They overcome the powerlessness of their solitary despair by networking desire’ (9).

Networks of Outrage image Image Credit: Poster from 2011 Egyptian Protests (Essam Sharaf)

One perceives a rush to claim a ‘power switch’ from offline, old, establishment power to an online, new, ‘people’s’ power, which covers much of Castells’s good empirical dataset. The diverse graphs attached to the appendix try to prove consistent public awareness of movements such as Occupywhich is fine. However, the roots of this popularity, such as links with the mainstream media, remain undisclosed. On the other hand, Castells resumes the search for the idea of an ‘autonomous’ space where citizens’ power happens: a discussion that began in The Network Society. The existence of this ‘autonomous’ space, situated between cyberspace and urban realms, would enable movements to gather and conquer their objectives. Inevitably, the social network appears as its prime example and as the core of this new ‘spaciality’. In this sense, qualities such as togetherness, self-reflexivity and virality split networked movements from ordinary, or offline, social mobilisations and political campaigns.

Castells aims to demonstrate how those qualities can be perceived in recent episodes of great media visibility. He brings up the case of Brazil. In 2013, protests that started in São Paulo as the result of a bus fare hike later became massive demonstrations. That event would be enough to attest to the power of networked movements, sending people out onto the streets and ultimately receiving a direct response from the government. Letting alone that this thesis can be easily contested with many other factors, I will point out that the credit for this improved accountability is neither given to society, nor to the leftist government that was in power. It is rather the product of a new Internet-based mindset. Are these changes for good? The issue of temporality appears unaddressed. Networked movements are celebrated for their leaderless structures, but the ‘charismatic’ activist Camila Vallejo is praised as the Chilean movement’s leader, alongside the support from president Michelle Bachelet (238). Those contradictions unveil more the traditional ambiguity of collective action than a seamless and spontaneous, online-mediated civil reaction, as the author argues.

The book’s merits lie nonetheless in dedicating time to understanding the fluid dynamics of social movements and their important role for contemporary politics. The improvement of social movements’ ability to communicate raises hopes of a more critical public sphere, less vulnerable to being misled by politicians (264). As seen in the final chapter, a connected but disenchanted electorate can offer a risky protest vote, as happened with the Five Stars Movement in Italy. The benefits of well-connected social movements are clear and they can be enormous, even more far-reaching in vibrant democracies. However, the extent to which this connectivity thrives amid a capitalist, entertainment-driven, ‘attention deficit’ Internet, remains, nonetheless, not enough discussed. The constant references to Occupy as the cornerstone of ‘civil disobedience’ and outrage against the system miss the point of a more radical critique, one that could take social movements to new levels of politicisation.

By assigning a less ambitious scope for the ‘networked’ phenomenon, a more credible and exciting reality could instead be described, even if applied to the micro-level. In Networked Publics and Digital Contention (2015), Mohamad Zayani makes the case for Tunisia and narrates on a more realistic basis the impact of the Internet in a young democracy. In Tweets and the Streets: Social Media and Contemporary Activism (2012), Paolo Gerbaudo discusses the illusion of online ‘space’ by receiving many insights from activists. The truth is, while users of Facebook and Twitter, social movements must still struggle today against real inequalities before they can embody good cases of connectivity and Internet power. Perhaps by looking at this social backbone before then exploring communicational possibilities, this would give more credibility to the ‘networked’ as a normative framework. Castells’s book may enchant those who are fascinated with a few mainstream cases of temporary social disruption, but it unsurprisingly fails to add more meaning to the ‘network’ ideal, which, in a time of state surveillance and the digital divide, has not yet lived up to expectations.

Hi Ma,

Just walked up 1.7 miles (to the UU Church) and turning around, am walking back.
Received a curious email the other day from Angela, Patricia and another organizer. I get the impression A & V Yoga has changed a lot re freedom and other related issues. Why did my good friend Lynn never go back to them? (Illegal issues even?)
As artists, and possibly now unethical ones (here in California too, from their base in Greece?) am
I'm considering simply, following their curious email, not communicating, and simply watch the videos (afterward) per what I ordered when I registered.
Am focusing on ethics in an ongoing way, and re Yoga too.

Sending love,Scott

Scottish Country Dance tunes in G & D for D & A Scottish Small Pipes CHANTER explorations

Inbox

Hi Taylor,

Scottish Country Dance tunes in G - 'Southwind' - & D - 'Farewell To Scotland' - for D & A Scottish Small Pipes' CHANTERs explorations. There's a tune in A major too here - Bonnie Glenfarg - which can sort of work on the A mixolydian chanter. (No gracenotes or doublings however - which can be freeing, or even offer improvisational opportunities too:)
Cheers,

Scott

Taylor,

for the interesting learning challenge of it, would you like to explore playing "Southwind" on the D CHANTER for next week and the following week? This would involve learning new fingering, and you'd have to rewrite a tiny bit of the tune outside the D chanter's nine note range. (Only a few of the tunes in the blue and pink books in D major, - So for A mix chanter (and I presume the key of G) so D mixolydian chanter - are completely in the chanters' range, which makes for innovation possibilities. Seeking to develop new big interesting challenges for you 😉 ... Beyond Piobaireachd ...  (Learning SSP CHANTER B flat fingering ANEW on the practice chanter AHEAD TOO potentially? ): Three SSP chanters' open a range of possibilities, and esp in playing with other instruments :)
Scott

Great, Taylor,

Circle of 5ths, I think, - seeking those tunes in blue and pink books which can be played with both chanters' and work, without learning New D CHANTER fingering but on D chanter, and even 'fugue' like making harmony ... May be an opportunity to write such tunes too ... Blue and pink books are deep resources, many playable with all 3 Scottish Small Pipes' chanters' ... And thus with other instruments and Open Band Players, possibly across the country digitally even ... Have mentioned this to Patti who knows these books very well (and some theory too - she was a music major at Cal in the '70s) and we'll see what emerges ...
Was just jamming with the Allman Bros in 73 in a beginning way on the A chanter around 2:30 ... Sounded in tune, was fun and beginning to click a bit, - helped to have head phones on from computer ... (I 'Bliss' out a little to this 1973 recording ... Not sure completely why) ... May learn more too from Ian (and Patti) about doing this 🙂 too 😉Playing so was fun, novel experimental with lots of potential Scott

Angela's coming to bErkeley ~ NOT ~ but rather she's beginning to teach on Sunday online from Greece

Scott MacLeod <yogamacflower@gmail.com>9:52 AM (13 hours ago)to LynnAngelavictorAndrewSatyaBarbaraPattiMarcScottLindaEricTiaC.StuartGregScottNancyHenry, PatriciaAngela, (Victor), All,
Looking forward to your course on Sundays this month. Are you teaching too, Victor? Henry, Charlotte, (Nancy & Greg), Angela and Victor are wonderfully creative in their Yoga exploration (art, and hippy-wise as well). Am curious how we might connect socially and newly in your Yoga course online in group video, and friendship-wise, as well. What makes their Yoga great? For me, it's their vision and language, and how they integrate this Yoga inside symbolically ~ more here: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Angela%20and%20Victor%20yoga.
So besides asking, Angela & Victor, about explorations with Yoga Lego Robotics' play, and with playing with Scratch Programming, and even brainwave headset-wise, and brain-science wise too, - ie to  make brainwave headsets, eg Brainfingers?, in Yoga courses, and all in this blog entry too  from 1/22/21 - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/indian.html ... am also curious about your Yoga, genetic engineering, and aging reversal, in your course. Just shared this with you:
If you want to envision what the new mRNA might look like at the molecular level as it courses through your body now after getting vaccinated, in an image from MIT, and from one of its most creative scientists, check this out - https://twitter.com/mitbrainandcog/status/1356634750610534403?s=20 .
Now why couldn't we - in this genetic engineering revolution (and during the Covid-19 pandemic) - have developed and rushed to Tom Moore an anti-dying vaccine re what happens genetically at death, I wonder?

A bit behind the aging reversal curve still, I'd say :)
see related Tweets below,

Could Gingko Works create an anti-dying vaccine even?
In terms of creative genetic engineering, am also curious about Christina Agapakis' (Gingko Works - Genetics' firm in Boston) and Nick Seaver's almost trippy thinking in these regards: "What happens when biology becomes technology?" https://twitter.com/thisischristina/status/1282739556626956289?s=20
Christina is the Creative Director of Gingko Works in the Boston area (with a Harvard PhD) and life partners with the brilliant Anthropologist Nick Seaver, who is a high achieving smart Yale graduate, a MIT Media Lab graduate and has a University of California PhD, and originally from Los Angeles (which can be fascinating heightened awareness-wise in a unique way culturally out of the '60s too - Greg?). Could they be the organization (Gingko Works) that even could engineer an Anti Dying vaccine somehow? And how could we begin to explore this Yogically together 200 years from now, in communication, 300 years from now? 18,000 years from now together? :)
Am amazed in this video, too, how much of Boston heightened colorful, musical, creative, smart thinking there is in it ... in the town where I was born ... which comes through time :)
Looking forward to your course, Angela! (& Victor?)! And thank you for making this possible ~ from home (as I type from my 'safe house' north of Berkeley), which I may seek to clean up a bit even as Sunday draws close! (Will Zoom 'screencast' to a large screen Google Smart TV I wonder? ). Will we all be able to take your Yoga course next year or soon with you in Greece, me in the SF Bay Area, and all of us distributed around the world like little seeds, while visiting a #RealisticVirtualHarbin Hot Springs ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook/status/1272593936180080641?s=20~ in a  https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForSoaking?src=hashtag_click & for A & V Yoga ? Might I begin to teach Yoga again from Canyon 94516 even ... and in a Yoga hall there? Thanks so much for bringing your creative Yoga learning opportunities online, Angela & Victor! And looking forward to connecting in new ways, and differently virtually. Eliciting loving bliss like turning on inner music natural brain chemistry possibilities in this course too? Scott MacLeod <yogamacflower@gmail.com>2:35 PM (8 hours ago)to PatriciaPatricia,
Thanks. I've unsubscribed you from this email thread. Group-ally isn't really a word to my knowledge, like person-ally is without the hyphen. Thanks for your sharing the possibilities of communication personally, which could even be regarding friendship (but Yoga doesn't really explore the idea of being friends, in my experience, re all its 'memes' - as 'replicating cultural units' here - which come through the past 2300 years or so). 'Friends,' and being friends, are other interesting ideas to explore in Angela and Victor's Yoga.
Thanks, and with caring, Scott
care label in blog ~ https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/care ~

Angela, (Victor?), Marc, All,

Thanks so much for the email just now, Angela and Tia. I hope you're safe and sound in Eftalou, Molyvos, Lesvos, Greece, after 17 earthquakes, and 3 big ones just recently. Looking forward to your course too.
Marc - who is a geneticist / immunology researcher in French-speaking Switzerland - what would be the genetics of 'dying' or of 'death' in all 3-100 million species (re decline of gene function - https://youtu.be/bnCEIPQFNnk) - and which could be explored in words Yogically, A&V-wise, I think, and regarding Angela's visionary poem even (re the 'death' word in it too) - 'Who am I?" (below, since A&V's website seems inaccessible all of a sudden) - which, if aging reversal genetic therapy is realized, may be a non-issue or reversible even, I wonder?
Am reminded in these regards of Angela and Victor's 'Who Are We Anyway?' web page - https://angela-victor.com/content/who-are-we-anyway - and Yogini Angela's poem or teaching therein - "Who Are We: Angela?" https://angela-victor.com/angela-farmer - which also seems identity related ... (and handwritten, but then digitally put on this web page). Here's Angela's poem:

Who am Iwhispered the windas it blew through my hair?
Who am I sang the seaas a wave like a snakecurled over the beach
This is Icroaked the rockbut I'll be gone by tomorrow
And the sun grew hotter as I tumbled through my breathand fellinto darkness, into nothing . . . into spaceis this who I am?

A new breath began
(image of beach, rock and sun)
For me Yoga is a journey each day down into my underworld not knowing what I shall find . . . . .
It is a 'kind of death' to meet those places in my bodythat still feel pain that still hold fearfrom long forgotten times . . .
Then with quiet and gentle acceptance of these little parts of me, the sad or hidden parts, the lonely or ugly parts . . . seeds of release are planted and the outcome is a giftthat inspires my teaching, enriches my life (image).
I feel such joy when I see a studentfinding courage to enter her or his own inner-underworld in their own unique way. They discover their own creativity in breathand movement as deep places un-raveland the power and beauty that brings to them.
In this process, the terms "teacher' and "student" dissolve and we enter an awareness ofinnocence and gratitude.
Appreciating here the poetic & hand written aspects of Angela's poem, in particular - https://angela-victor.com/angela-farmer - and am appreciating too the invitation to head further into my own 'underworld' or 'Hades' herein - are these other words for the 'feelings' that come up in the inner body, Angela?
I think my previous email to Patricia was about being friends - hi Lynn, Marc, Henry, Nancy, Greg, Barbara, Patti, Andrew! - and I've removed Patricia from this email thread per her request, as friends too, (but she's married to Andrew in Yellow Springs, Ohio, I think, so she may read them perhaps). Here's my email reply to Patricia in these regards:

Thanks for your sharing the possibilities of communication personally, which could even be regarding friendship (but Yoga doesn't really explore the idea of being friends, in my experience, re all its 'memes' - as 'replicating cultural units' here - which come through the past 2300 - 10000 years or so). 'Friends,' and being friends, are other interesting ideas to explore in Angela and Victor's Yoga.

Greetings dear friends from a quiet day in Eftalou. Yes, quiet after a day of earthquakes on Lesvos.... 17 in all with three  big ones ...enough to rattle the house and crockery and leave us dizzy!  On top of that a huge thunderstorm overhead and more earth quaking in the night ...  Seems the earth, the planets and human consciousness or ‘lack of’ are  all entwined in these  rumbling, shaking, churning and  ‘wake-up’ messages!...

Thank you so much to those who have joined the February explorations on Zoom.
I have been spending time with the ‘Goddess of tiny things’. I loved that book: ”The God of Small Things“ a great story set in southern India, but it was the title that struck a permanent note for me.Sometimes I wake up to a tiny place that has not shown or expressed itself in my body before, and as I start to connect with it, listen to its message, send warm energy and breath in its direction, a window opens, giving my practice and the day a whole new emotional colour!
I hope to share this process in our February classes. We shall start this Thursday and Sunday with the HIPS....[that of course includes the legs and spine ! ] with simple stretches leading to the wide-angle front bend [Eka padma asana ] on Thursday and kneeling backbend [Supra Virasana ] on Sunday.  Please have a bolster, strap, block and chair handy!
The idea is that you explore what works for you and take care of yourself by not forcing or pushing but rather find yourself within your own limits. In other words, ‘ making friends ‘ with each place as it shows up.  The pose is only an opportunity to start this journey and become totally present at any moment in time.
Looking forward to meeting you in ‘tiny places’!Much loveAngela

Online piano lessons ~ and in conversation with Scottish small pipes

Thanks, Patti, so much!

Maybe I will head in a scales' & A direction 2 days a week since all of every piece ever is in scales and arpeggios, n'est-ce pas (or almost) :)?
Playing daily keyboard (and bagpipes) ENJOYABLY & INSPIRINGLY is another big question
HERE's a video thanks too ☺
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-dUHt0_N9WUYw-v7pqcb3wd5xq855yfI/view
ScottAngela interestingly explores going into one's 'stuff' - and I have some stuff around 'practicing' - which she explores one way in words here -https://angela-victor.com/angela-farmer -
and perhaps to bring 'light' there, (or freedom re release inside)
Thank you, and see you soon,Scott
Seeking too expressive (with some technique) fluency ... And re jamming for example in new ways ahead with the Allman Bros in '73 and re what I've written before (on Small Pipes too:)

Hi Patti,
Thanks - glad you're teaching - and that we're having a piano lesson tomorrow online!
And sounds good - let's explore 30 minutes tomorrow, and maybe I'll head to an hour in the future; I'm grateful to my mother for this nice opportunity to take piano lessons with you. :) I'm not comfortable with PP at all, having a bunch of questions about their keeping the security of their users in mind, with some recent issues in these regards with a piping student of mine. Not sure about Venmo but it's likely not built with too much end user security in mind either; would you be up for setting up Zelle? This has worked well in recent months with a student, and works for money transfer between 2 different banks, for example. Set up was easy. We could further set up Zelle after the lesson tomorrow. The phone number I use for this is 412 478 0116 at WF. What phone number do you use for your piano tuition bank? After each lesson, you'd send me a request, and I'd then transfer the money.
In terms of a specific focus tomorrow, re what I'm looking at, and creatively, can we begin with piano please with some Scottish Country Dance sheet music, from the SCD books, and my playing these on the piano more fluently? And, further, could we even begin to explore developing some of these piano pieces, say in the key of D major, with 2 SSP chanters in A mixolydian in mind, and potentially playing harmony together, - and even eventually for jamming (not necessarily with the Allman Bros in 1973 yet, but perhaps, brainstorming-wise, by finding some of the SCD tunes on Youtube in D, somehow even in a rock and roll transcription or not, for single chanter jamming)? And how to develop further fluency with two hand piano playing of SCD sheet music re - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm (beyond my brain doesn't work this way, since I was 6-12 yo :) ?
INSPIRATION - SCD ear candy

1 Seek out private instruction.

2 Write out a schedule, a plan with goals. (Choose pieces you enjoy playing – S.M.).
Yo-yo Ma says, never make a sound without hearing it first; hear it in your mind.

3 Set goals to chart development.

and, where 2 might be slightly faster 2 hand fluency each week, and - hearing the pieces in mind (interesting exploration :)
3 tempo goals for increasing fluency (since this worked with metronome for my first Scottish Small Pipes' 'Honey in the Bag' album ... might explore drum metronomes too:) - with specific expressive goals too, which somehow 'rock' SCD-wise?
http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm .
Am also looking at Tilden and the beautiful SF Bay Area around us - re picture and walk!
And might I possibly please also send you a Google Meet video conference link instead, from - sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandshcool.org - so I can record and save these for future learning ? :)
Thank you,Scott

Hi Scott,
Sorry, was in a zoom meeting when you called and then teaching.
Yes, 11 Wednesday is great, and 1/2 hour is fine. My rates (which have not changed for years) are usually:
   1 hour = $503/4 hour = $401/2 hour = $30
Does that work OK for you?
And I am happy getting payment either from Venmo (an app which does not charge a fee) or PayPal - and you just say you are sending money to a friend with PayPal and, viola, no fee. I am, after all, a friend, yes? I use pkcobb23@gmail.com for them.
I have never used Zelle, but am willing to try it if you are more comfortable with that than the other two options.
Your link gives me a big blob of stuff - not sure specifically which you are looking at? And I shall set up a Zoom meeting and invite you, OK?
Patti

And what might we begin with tomorrow, with some very recent thoughts about some of this here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/salvia-columbariae.html.  Thank you!Regards, Scott

Patti,

The "Southwind" piano tune on blue book p 74, in the key of G, on my still new D chanter (which I don't play that much these days) works in the D chanters' 9 note range I think, and in tune with the piano, but I have to learn a whole new set of fingerings in bodymind, where the A note on the A mix chanter, now becomes the D note on the D mix chanter ....Looking for the tunes in the pink and blue books that at first are in key of G (so for the D chanter) but work with A fingering ... just like that :)
Travel across the book to the left one waltz, to "Farewell to Scotland" on the p 73, in key of D (but which works with the A mix chanter), and most of the tune is playable within the 9 note range of the A mixolydian chanter, and adaptable otherwise.
Interesting two tunes to begin exploring on piano and small pipes with for a bunch of reasons possibly, beyond learning the left hand further on keyboard for fluency :)
Thanks, Scott :)

Online bagpiping lessons ~ toward 3 further albums

Hi Ian,

Thanks. Let's explore hour-long lessons, if that works for you, - but I'm thinking about doing them every other week, or every 3rd week (due to financial constraints currently). And how would next Wednesday in the afternoon, or next week sometime, if Wednesday, at 4 or so, doesn't work for you? Thanks so much.

http://scottmacleod.com/piping.htm - and how to bring some further expressiveness, or 'life,' into my recent album, too, I wonder, in addition to an upcoming Piobaireachd album (and regarding the other explorations I've emailed about including SSP bagpipe jamming with Allman Bros in '73, and re Gunhild Carling - https://youtu.be/W780LSQHbYY - as a way to begin exploring 'Pibroching the Blues')?

What kind of GREAT machine learning / AI blues and Scottish drumming rhythms are out there too - to come into communication with (gradually at first) - I wonder :)?
Your Piobaireacd and Light Music guidelines, and Yo Yo Ma's & Wynton Marsalis's Guidelines for Practicing / Playing, are good starting places too - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm ,,, as I begin to discover the Piobaireachds I most enjoy, lyrically, or melodically, playing - and learn to play them well technically, Great Highland Bagpipe-wise, as well as innovatively, freelly, expressively, creatively, grooving-ly even, musically, re "Pibroching the Blues" or similar explorations.:) Thank you.

Thanks, Patti, so much!

Maybe I will head in a scales' & A direction 2 days a week since all of every piece ever is in scales and arpeggios, n'est-ce pas (or almost) :)?
Playing daily keyboard (and bagpipes) ENJOYABLY & INSPIRINGLY is another big question
HERE's a video thanks too ☺

And how to develop further fluency with two hand piano playing of SCD sheet music re - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm (beyond my brain doesn't work this way, since I was 6-12 yo :) ?

and, where 2 might be slightly faster 2 hand fluency each week, and - hearing the pieces in mind (interesting exploration :)
3 tempo goals for increasing fluency (since this worked with metronome for my first Scottish Small Pipes' 'Honey in the Bag' album ... might explore drum metronomes too:) - with specific expressive goals too, which somehow 'rock' SCD-wise?

Hi Scott,
Sorry, was in a zoom meeting when you called and then teaching.

Dear Dick, Ma, Lucy, Ann, Alden, Sandy, All,

An astonishing new technique from @MIT (@eboyden3) and @harvardmed researchers enables labeling individual molecules of messenger RNA within a tissue sample and then sequencing the RNA. @mcgovernmit @ScienceMIT https://t.co/mbro4Yk0DH

Nice to talk, Rob!
(Interestingly, Twitter just introduced a feature that pops people up to the top of the smartphone Twitter screen - allowing me to unfollow them, if I so choose, which I'm doing; are they all illegals somehow - could be - and which other large social media companies never built in as a feature, but could even FB's MZ have suggested to Twitter's JD that this would be a good idea for Twitter, and could Twitter have learned from other's mistakes? Music making (continued from - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/lagopus-ptarmigan.html)

Patti, Barbara, Taylor, Bruce, David, Heather, Janie, Alex (& Salina), Ed, Linda, Ian, Sioux, Scott, Susan, Hugh, Betsy, George, Andrew, Bruce, David, Rob, RSCDS teachers, Celts, Scotophiles, All, (some of this email thread conversation is here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/lagopus-ptarmigan.html - and in previous ones too:) ...
This is it ~Gunhild Carling - Bagpipe Blues

https://youtu.be/W780LSQHbYY
(Swede Gunhild and her family are apparently northern Californians now ... now how to write some kernels from this onto paper sheet music?:)
And I don't have the saxophone blues' fingering in my bodymind (yet) ... but there you have it - 9 notes, bagpipe in a mixolydian scale, and rockin' blues, with a great rhythm and big band brass sound (which could be too the Allman Bros. at Cow Palace in SF in '73 transposed, I'd think), and which is adaptable.
But I return to Ma ... and Marsalis ... their guidelines for playing music ... http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm ... (and could this lead too to jamming with the Allman Bros in 1973 on bagpipe? .... or to Glaswegian Kinnaris Quintet, verging on Scottish traditional chamber music, even?)
So, as I wrote to my Ma last night ...
I played bagpipes and piano last night .. Scottish Country Dancing sheet music (ear candy) was most enjoyable to play and hear :) ... and in retrospect I could have piped more slowly and relaxedly (playing some jigs and hornpipes) ... and am seeking to chart out some new goals eg for albums 2, 3, & 4 (Piobaireachd, Light Music, 'Pibroching the Blues' with Allman Bros '73 +)
So, coming back to (which I've also added to, riffing-wise) ...
Seek out private instruction. > ... ...Write out a schedule, a plan with goals. (Choose pieces you enjoy playing – S.M.). ...Set goals to chart development. > ...Concentrate when you practice. ...Relax and practice slowly. ...Practice hard parts longer. ...Practice expressively. ...Don't be too hard on yourself.89101112 ...
http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm ...

And eventually into ... http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm

So, am a bit tied to sheet music at this time, and would love too, Ma and Marsalis-wise (http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm), where Marsalis is a kind of big band virtuoso player to my mind, to head from sheet music, to jamming with piping music, pibroching the blues, Kinnaris Quintet, and Allman Bros., all from sheet music into free form ... Patti? Ian? :)

The last site ~ Guidelines for Practicing Loving Bliss vis a vis a Musical Instrumenthttp://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm - is another writing, on paper or Web, exploration & adventure ...

Hey Open Band and All, let's come to play like this, at St. Clements in Berkeley, and when the Covid-19 pandemic memes (replicating cultural units, - in the internet media) are brought under control?
The videos in this first link are GREAT :)

Pibroching the blues
Have begun exploring 'Pibroching the blues here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/tigridia-pavonia.html - and recently in blog too a bit, and found these two stellar and unique examples, far from what I have in mind or am exploring ... You can hear the Piobaireachd lyricism I'll call this in these, and creatively ...
Bruce Cockburn - Pibroch: the wind in the valleyhttps://youtu.be/VrgI8peP89c
(just saw he's affiliated with the Unitarian Canadian service committee too)
and very differently, and brilliantly rock and and roll-wise Jethro Tull - Pibroch (Cap in Hand) - Black Satin Lady (1982 - Italy)https://youtu.be/No6myvku2_s

Am glad too to be beginning to take keyboard lessons with Patti Cobb next week, and potentially even for exploring writing music for two (2) Scottish small pipers' jamming together blues-wise with something like the Allman Bros in 1973 (at least this is the exploration I'm interested in ... ) ... and with 3 chanters, - in A, B flat, D mixolydian with only 9 note scales ...  and especially with exploring with Patti writing some of this down on sheet music for conceiving it well. This would be in addition to paying JS Bach Inventions, Scottish Country Dance music sheet music more fluently than just base lines, and regarding a Blues' piano book I have too.  And with all of you too? Like Kinnaris?

... and I may even begin to envision a 3rd "Pibroching the Blues" (with the Allman Bros. in the 1970s - https://youtu.be/DNAmXz8kc6I ) album ... .and with lessons with Ian Whitelaw too..  since couldn't classical bagpipe music (Piobaireachd) be conceived of as a way of Scots singing and playing the blues? (In a big way, yes, but with much potential for idiom-conversations' creativity)... not sure about a rhythm and blues drummer to help focus this further :) ... lots of Blues' in Scotland too :( :)

Glad WUaS has 4 possible graduate student candidates for free-to-students' online PhDs beginning in the autumn 2021 (taking 7 years?), 2 from India, 1 Morocco, and 1 in Indonesia potentially interested :) ... Pittsburgh-centric Burns' Nicht Zoom call

Hi Ken, Nick, Ma, :)
Thanks for a happening Pittsburgh-centric Burns' Nicht Zoom call yesterday, Ken (and Nick)!
Funny thing: attend a Burns' Night, and all of a sudden a friend from Shady Side Academy high school, Henry Cutter in NYC (whose sister Elizabeth is a psychoanalyst there too), emails me and 2 other high school friends, Greg Highlands, and Nancy Gormley-Bevilaqua and we all start connecting in writing, and explore meeting in Zoom too.
Henry mentions he's taking Youtube Yoga classes with Adrienne, enjoying them, and he's planning to continue with them, too. I mentioned in reply that Angela Farmer and Victor Van Kooten's upcoming 4 week live Yoga course at 8am Pacific Time on Sundays, streaming from Greece, begins next Sunday - Super Bowl Sunday - (and with one on Thursday too) :)
So hearing about their families leads me to explore further connecting with CS (with Scots' heritage, with a name like that?), a University of Southampton PhD student in biology, and who's just finishing up, and whom I emailed to congratulate on finishing an experiment in October of 2019.
"(Still seeking to begin a family here - avec la Charlotte? - https://twitter.com/C_M_Stuart/status/1355953327046012930?s=20 - who is just finishing her PhD at the Uni of Southampton in Biology related field, with a Greek PhD advisor too, I think ... and whom I met on the most interesting social media for me, Twitter. I emailed her to congratulate her for finishing an experiment in October of 2019, but haven't heard back in email :)
I ask of Henry, and Nancy and Greg:
"What do you think of this aging reversal via genetic engineering being in reach thinking, per George Church, for example, and, one among thousands, this Pittsburgh genetics' firm too, in Happy New Year 2021 letter - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/twinpods-123120-see-122320-too-seasons.html ? (Glad to have published my 5th book on 1/1/21, 4th of poetry, and my first Scottish small pipes album, in December 2020 too!)
Will we all be talking together when we're 125 years' old, - and even in 30 yo bodies???? :))) Pretty wild language from George Church, Harvard and MIT Professor of Genetics, and an old hippy in many ways; he's really creative:)"

So Ken and Nick thank you for the great Burns' Night virtual supper and connecting Pittsburgh with Glasgow with other Scottish locales:) And will we be celebrating Burns' Nicht together virtually 400 years from now and in a free Scotland even? :)
Great to 'meet' your Mom, too, Ken and Nick!
As aye, Scott- https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Scotland -

Congratulations on completing your PhD experiment

Scott MacLeod <sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org>2:38 PM (7 hours ago)to C.Stuart, I.GaleaDear Charlotte,
Congratulations on your upcoming PhD it seems too! (I thought you might have already received it, but when I looked at your Twitter feed, I didn't see this - have you completed your PhD?)
I'm following up with this further congratulations email, after emailing you in October 2019 - and hope you're doing well. How are you doing?
Any chance you might find your way to the USA on the west coast when you're done, and when the Covid-19 pandemic memes are brought under control? And might you even be interested in taking a 4-week Yoga course beginning next Sunday, with Angela Farmer (who's English), and Victor Van Kooten (who's Dutch), and streaming live from Greece on the isle of Lesvos, or Athens (I think)?
And I'd love too to come into conversation - science riffing-wise even - about aging reversal via genetic engineering, and regarding the Harvard and MIT Professor of Genetics' George Church's lead, and thinking in these regards, see too the longevity label in my blog - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/longevity. In what ways will further aging reversal research develop in a single realistic virtual earth and in particular in a realistic virtual earth for genetics (at the cellular and molecular levels too) - https://twitter.com/search?q=%23RealisticVirtualEarthForGenetics&src=typed_query with an interesting Street View England genetics and geneaology picture here - https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand/status/1235357771744169985?s=20 -  https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForEvolution?src=hashtag_click - and for brain science too (which may be closely related to your PhD work) -  https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForBrainScience?src=hashtag_click (and a realistic virtual earth for anthropology and ethnography too! - some of my areas) - which big ideas I'm still exploring developing at CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch, planned in Greek too:)?
Sincerely, Scott

HEY!!! Are you still out there?
Henry Cutter10:35 AM (11 hours ago)to Scott, Greg, Nancy, meHi.
Hope all is well. I hear from Scott fairly often via the news from World University and School, but nothing from Nancy and Greg. I guess what you give is what you get; I too have been silent. We are all fine here in Covid-19 hibernation. The big activities today are deleting old email and paying bills, so it sounds awful, but I am actually doing fine. I just (21 days ago) started a thing called 30 Days of Yoga With Adriene, via YouTube. It is little 25-minute classes that I really enjoy, especially because I find myself stuck at my desk so much, and not even having the routine of walking to the subway to go to work, and then back to the subway to come home from work. I can see myself continuing with this. I have also been studying Italian for a few years now and am looking forward ot maybe being able to get over there later in the year, or maybe in 2022. I have started Arabic as well, but I have a loooooooooooong way to go. So far I am just doing Duolingo and learning the letters.
I notice below that you are playing guitar, Nancy. Is that continuing? Greg, how is the painting and the music?
Anyone feel like a Zoom call?
Lots of love,
Henry

Hi, Scott (hard not to call you "Scottie") (and Henry and Greg)!
Thanks so much for this. I started learning to play guitar last April (a mere 40 years or so after my last lesson :) ), so I've been re-discovering a lot of old stuff, including Neil (also Peter Green a LOT, and older Pink Floyd). I have a long way to go, but I'm really enjoying it, as music seems to be one of the few things that consistently makes sense and means something to me.
I'm living in Hoboken again after seven long years in Floriduh (my mother died last summer after a short bout with cancer and a long time with a lot of pain and other issues). My son is a REAL musician who will be transferring to Berklee in Boston next fall. Life is weirdly good.
I hope you're all doing well too!
Love,
Nancy

Nancy Bevilaqua11:29 AM (11 hours ago)to Henry, Scott, Greg, meHi you guys! Henry, I've been meaning to get in touch now that I'm back out of hell (FL) and in Hoboken. How are Victoria, Louis, and Alice? I'm still thinking of them as little kids! I actually learned quite a bit of Arabic years ago (Egyptian boyfriend and a class at the New School.) It's actually pretty easy to learn, oddly, and I love the beauty of the script.Greg, I've been thinking of you too. I just came across a musician (and his album) that SO reminded me of you ("Out Passed Nowhere," by Oliver Tompkins). And Scott, it seems that you were prescient with World University! I'm glad you're still carrying on with it!We're doing well. Sandro has been living with me since March, taking his Berklee classes online. He's majoring in Composition and Film-scoring, and he's been working on his first EP. It's really nice to have him here, although a 22-year-old man SHOULD be out in the world with his peers (and a girlfriend)! Covid kinda sucks.Lorenzo and I are separated, but remain best friends, and he just lives a few blocks away, so we see him a lot..I'm occasionally writing poems again; if you google me you can find some of my published stuff.Believe it or not, I have yet to do a Zoom call, and would probably get confused 🤪. Are any of you on Instagram? It's the only social media I don't despise. I'm at @bevilaquanancy, if anyone else uses it.Anyway, great to hear from y'all!

Henry, Nancy, Greg,
So nice to hear from you!
Nancy, what are you writing these days? And great to hear about Sandro (and Lorenzo too)! And Henry, how are your sisters Elizabeth and Margaret as well? And Greg, how are Rhyland in Boston, and Nigel in Minneapolis doing (and Delbert and Betty, and Paul)? (Still seeking to begin a family here - avec la Charlotte? - https://twitter.com/C_M_Stuart/status/1355953327046012930?s=20 - who just finished here PhD at the Uni of Southhampton in Biology related field, with a Greek advisor too, I think ... and whom I met on the most interesting social media for me, Twitter? I emailed her to congratulate her for finishing an experiment in October of 2019, but haven't heard back in email :)
What do you think of this aging reversal via genetic engineering being in reach thinking, per George Church, for example, and, one among thousands, this Pittsburgh genetics' firm too, in Happy New Year 2021 letter - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/twinpods-123120-see-122320-too-seasons.html ? (Glad to have published my 5th book on 1/1/21, 4th of poetry, and my first Scottish small pipes album, in December 2020 too!)
Will we all be talking together when we're 400 years' old, - and even in 30 yo bodies???? :))) Pretty wild language from George Church, Harvard and MIT Professor of Genetics, and an old hippy in many ways; he's really creative:)
Nancy, if not Zoom, could you and Sandro together, join a Google Meet video conference meeting, or in Skype, - and perhaps you, Greg (Nigel too) and Sandro could all make music together? I've read that real real time music making may be possible now with a FM radio add on - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/tree-swallow.html (see this UU choir, and another choir:) - but am not sure if this is viable or not, - and across oceans even??? To be seen.

Could this partly potentially come to underlie a single realistic virtual earth / universe?

Seeking a life partner, but not ..... I think, for a variety of reasons, ethical questions among them ... And since we haven't connected successfully communicatively at all ... Am concerned too about the possible misinformation she was sharing ..., and also potentially her political alliances ..., ethically too ... Shared these ideas with my mother after talking yesterday, David,

For possible very long lives, a few things come to mind after just talking together (thanks so much ... I was at the UU church ... and even re the idea of troop-bonding and kin below ) -
ADesiderata for you (and me), "Go placidly ... " - https://www.desiderata.com/desiderata.html ...

CTroop-bondage - staying bonded and communicating with your great sympatico (English?) friends in Pittsburgh, (and on Cuttyhunk, like Jean and so many others - see, John Money's concepts of determinism here - http://scottmacleod.com/anthropology/determinism.htm ) ... in a way that grows these connections ...
So talking with you made me want to seek to troop bond with kin somehow too, so I looked up RB's telephone number, MM's telephone number, saw BH's recent auto reply to the WUaS Minutes showing he's still in a communicating loop re connecting kin-wise, even if we don't talk that much, and David Thurston comes to mind ... kin-wise (for me) is what I have in mind, and smart, and together, and COMMUNICATING well and generatively ... women do this differently (and you have so many great smart friends in these regards!!! ... pick up your telephone over the weekend and call friends :) ... I think continuing to grow one's communicative talking 'powers' in the decades ahead with one's great circle of great friends is a way to navigate re trolls for example, Ma! Cultivate and grow your Pgh UU community in these regards? How are Jean and Chris doing, by the way?
Thanks for the information too ... Go placidly regarding the ear phones (or skip using them), go placidly regarding friendships, paribonds (like with Jean), and your Saturday ladies' group (expand to twice a week - and with a few different friends???) ... and Jacques Lacan MD's moving to language - the symbolic (with parallels to John Money's ideas of both Ycleptance, and Explication ... in a way relating to thinking ) - learning to use language further (re Brig too ... Lacan-wise) even, and yet well, like smart people do (French diplomats?)  - and communicatively has merit too ...
Listening to music has much merit too !
... and all even as I continue to seek a life partner, and to raise my kids well, wherever we develop our 'nest' together ... give them the Desiderata thinking, and re careers (re George Alexander's thinking) ... and if possible via communication good careers ! yes :)
On with playing my bagpipes, and writing further ... but what about my calling some of the friends above ... almost called Rob, but will go carefully in developing an on-the-phone relationship with him, if this might emerge :)

Hi Chinmay, and Prasanth, All,
If you were to be interested in a PhD program from World Univ & Sch (free-to-students, online possibly taking 7 years), what would it be in? Say you could choose from any of the ~32 departments at CC-4 MIT OCW - https://ocw.mit.edu/ - and take the initial 2 years of courses, first toward a Master's degree, on the edX platform - https://www.edx.org/search - first in English, later planned in all 22 languages in India. Here are some possible majors too - worlduniversityandschool.org. Thank you for your interest.
Warm regards, Scottworlduniversityandschool.org

Hi Chinmay, (& Prasanth),

Greetings!
I think both Prasanth (and Imad in Morocco), as prospective World Univ & Sch graduate students may apply through specific MIT departments to matriculate at WUaS. And Prasanth may be changing his Bachelor's degree major from Electronics and Electrical Engineering to Cognitive Science (and possibly EECS too) in English, and Imad may be changing his major from Chemistry in French (although the Moroccan dialect may be his first language, so Arabic I think), to Computer Science. (Aviv in Indonesia?) Chinmay, what's your major as an undergrad? What major, brainstorming-wise, might you be interested in - ocw.mit.edu (and potentially beginning with https://www.edx.org/ courses) - if you were to head for a PhD, with a Master's Degree along the way?
Prasanth is also very interested in beginning Tamil language WUaS for free-to-students' online Bachelor, Ph.D. Law, MD and IB high school degrees in Tamil - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Tamil_language - for Tamil Nadu. What are your first languages, Chinmay?

Dear Lucy, Cherry, Ma, Sandy, Dick, Pete, All,
I'm glad to write that I may have found both an online piping teacher, and an online piano teacher, beginning next week! :) How are all of you doing? (California apparently lifted the self-quarantine directive recently, see the NPR article here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/algonquin-provincial-park-echo.html - and regarding I think the covid-19 pandemic meme, as a replicating cultural unit, rather than genes, as replicating biology:)
Am glad to be starting to take video conference bagpiping lessons with Ian Whitelaw potentially next week (with whom I took lessons in SF in 2010), and regarding the envisioning of 2 further albums playing - 1 Piobaireachd, & 2 Light Music.
Am glad too to be beginning to take keyboard lessons with Patti Cobb next week, and potentially even for exploring two (2) Scottish small pipers' jamming together blues-wise with something like the Allman Bros in 1973 (at least this is the exploration I'm interested in ... ) ... and with 3 chanters, - in A, B flat, D mixolydian with only 9 note scales ...  and especially with exploring with Patti writing some of this down on sheet music for conceiving it well. This would be in addition to paying JS Bach Inventions, Scottish Country Dance music sheet music more fluently than just base lines, and regarding a Blues' piano book I have too.
... and I may even begin to envision a 3rd "Pibroching the Blues" (with the Allman Bros. in the 1970s - https://youtu.be/DNAmXz8kc6I ) album ... since couldn't classical bagpipe music (Piobaireachd) be conceived of as a way of Scots singing and playing the blues? (In a big way, yes, but with much potential for idiom-conversations' creativity)... not sure about a rhythm and blues drummer to help focus this further :) ... lots of Blues' in Scotland too :( :)
Glad WUaS has 2.5 prospective graduate student candidates for free-to-students' online PhDs beginning in the autumn 2021 (taking 7 years?), with another one from India, potentially interested :) ... Music school in the future ... for all instruments, each a wiki subject page for open teaching and learning, in ALL 7117 known living languages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Music_School .

Hi Patti,

Can we explore our first lesson on Wednesday next, 2.3.21 possibly please? :))
(Lucy and Cherry, were both also music teachers in a sense - Cherry in particular, and in elementary schools, and both of which, this music and schools, are not so elementary after all :) (... and with much growing-up fun & life ... with a kind of music unfolding naturally between us, more than metaphorically, eg singing-wise too probably :), - and with ma mere, quite musical too, we had much heightened inspiring musical awareness together from, say, my ages 2-6 (~1962-66 ... long time ... and with aging reversal via genetic engineering within reach per George Church:), ... when my family moved from the Boston MA area, to the New Haven CT area:) - models for inspiration in music esp. :) ... (am also bringing some email sociality here to the process of 'sense of isolation on the piano bench when 'practicing' without a clear sense of what or how to practice as a 7 yo for example - and have fun doing this' ..  into this unfolding musical conversation with Cherry, Lucy, my mother too, whom I'm newly calling Kirkbride, Ma :)) since this is your middle name, by which I've never called you before ... all music-, playing-, idea- and envisioning-wise too:)
Nice to talk the other day, Patti when you were on retreat in the Lake Tahoe area too - and welcome back!
What's your day looking like next Wednesday at 11am :)?
