(Rhetorically, would you agree that actively traded companies, and funds, are much more risky than index funds’ buy and hold approach (due to costs, but also manager or even NLP error)? And would Skoposlabs’ NLP also make it possible to identify new companies, for example, for index mutual funds - and even internationally - i.e. in each of all ~200 countries’ stock markets, and in their official languages? I've heard from MIT / Harvard Professor of Genetics' George Church that CRISPR CaS-9 is just the tip of the ice berg (one of many, many) of potential gene editing tools … thus bringing into question investing in just the CRISPR CaS-9 gene editing technology, let alone regarding the patenting it produces. Is this the case? And, brainstorming-wise, what do you think of a single realistic virtual earth for genetics for editing (for ex. in a realistic virtual earth for evolutionary biology), in some of these regards? Dear Sanjeev,
Both the legal documents and the Project ECHO Immersion PROGRAM didn't offer a way for WUaS to strategize the development of CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki WUaS's 200 medical schools and hospitals or to talk about this lack. So I left the ECHO Immersion due to this, and the lack of channels to communicate with the Project ECHO culture I was gaining/learning about. The ECHO ethics I was learning about in these communication practices were also of grave concern.

Hi Ma,
How are you? How have your past two days gone? I attended a day long Project ECHO Immersion today, from 7am - 4pm PT (1st day of 2.5 day conference), and while the growing Project ECHO is an amazing seed for online medical schools, ... Appreciating too Stanford's smarts ... And ... there's potential ... (and how to create a kind of online Stanford then or even re a 1960s-70s vision with California laid back excellence today anew) at WUaS Medicine (with Project ECHO?) ... New Mexico and UNM's Project ECHO culture, ... in its communicative practices (and kind of the opposite of traveling to Harbin and soaking in the easing warm waters of the warm pool ... BUT ALSO WITH SOME WESTERN culture similarities & parallels) - and ... founder Sanjeev Arora MD (whom I met at Stanford Medicine Grand Rounds in 2017) and appreciate has done well in navigating the growth of Project ECHO which is helping many people with a viable telemedicine model. Is it his medical smarts, his own communicative practices, (and even his thinking emerging from his Hindu or Sikh or other culture from India, where he's from ... What a world apart Is NM from his place of origin)? He also has CREATED a great ECHO program focusing on equality, the force multiplier of telemedicine caring, and creating careers.
Am a little tired from getting up at 6 and wondering too about rewriting the ECHO~WUaS legal documents that we received.
What do you think? And what are you up to the rest of the week? Am heading out for a walk soon ... Project ECHO is an amazing collaboration opportunity ... but am thinking about writing the legal documents in a new way more in their interests and WUaSs.

She's old and young, there's a bit of a hippy in her, and a witchie too:), and she's from Airdrie a few miles east of Glasgow ... Talk about identity & culture ... She's a voice from the depths of Scottish time (to my ear:) ... Took me awhile in 1977 - '78 (my first full year on Scotland to learn what Scots were saying in English) ... she sings Robbie Burns too:

How was your day, Ma? How are you? Am out on a walk 1.8 miles away at UU Church on a bench on a hill above with a 'UU flame' sculpture, and amusingly there's some kindling below ... CULTURALLY safe here away from 'safe house' in this messed up world ... In a new political climate too ... But I also don't think these UUs are 'my people' (from what I've observed of the few people passing through the empty parking lot / empty church (due to covid-19 pandemic, - and Berserkelely too:) even if a choir were to start again here in this place, that is physically .... Is this a curious loss of people ness (re troop bonding word too - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2009/05/common-atlantic-slippersnail.html?m=0) and re community word too? ... And in internetity (a social science idea I'm theorizing, relative to modernity (i.e. all the changes in thinking since the two industrial revolutions - since early 1700s even)? Thanks so much for your email, and clarification about your interest in a Cognitive Science major. Thinking in terms of a Realistic Virtual Earth For Brain Science - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForBrainScience?src=hashtag_click (a plan and focus at WUaS - where a realistic virtual earth will become scientific laboratories, field sites and classrooms) - and in Tamil, and for solving social problems in Tamil Nadu and in India, I wonder how we at WUaS might focus our degrees further. Your engineering focus is very generative and when I read MIT OCW's https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/brain-and-cognitive-sciences/ - "To study its complexities, the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology combines the experimental technologies of neurobiology, neuroscience, and psychology, with the theoretical power that comes from the fields of computational neuroscience and cognitive science." - a key course resource here potentially, I see a focus on brain theory regarding cognitive science and a few courses below with a focus on language, eg acquisition. These MIT OCW courses are both at the graduate and undergraduate level, without very many in edX yet.
And when I read about the undergraduate neuroscience major and its courses at Reed College (where I went to school) - https://www.reed.edu/neuroscience/requirements.html - I see many basic science requirements (eg both chemistry and biology), some of which at Reed would have a laboratory component, which WUaS seeks to create newly in a single realistic virtual earth, but which may take a while to say the least - ie to study inside people's individual brains experimentally but virtually, and for example regarding language acquisition (eg of Tamil).
(While all of this could be facilitated through the EECS engineering of a single realistic virtual earth for brains, in Tamil,- in brains' simulations with something like a Google Brain focus ... https://research.google/teams/brain/ ... and writing and publishing many scientific papers a year (and I know Google's Tom Dean there) and thus create many many careers, and a major online University in Tamil in Tamil Nadu online, as well as many Tamil language graduates with significant degrees - Bachelor, PhD, Law, MD and IB high school ... this is a decades' long project)
For you to develop the foundational knowledge in all of this too will be huge endeavor, especially since there are online 5 cognitive science courses at edX - https://www.edx.org/learn/cognitive-science - some in Japanese I think.

Also, seeing the work that's entailed here at MIT - NETWORKs too - and for a high quality PhD over 7 years might be informative to you.

The Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism at the Faculty of
Social Sciences of the Charles University in Prague calls for candidates
for the following PhD projects (each supported by a scholarship), for
its English-language PhD programme in Media and Communication Studies:
Digital Game Industry and Culture in a Local Context (2
grant-funded Ph.D. positions)
The Ph.D. project will be associated with the grant “Developing Theories
and Methods for Game Industry Research,” which starts in 2021. Following
the rising interest in the study of game industries, the dissertation
should focus on digital game production in a specific country or region,
based on the student’s preferences. The project can investigate the
production routines, design patterns, stylistic choices, or the values
of industry practitioners, with or without a historical perspective.
Theoretically, it is expected to draw from game studies, cultural
studies, and political economy of communication (including the theory of
cultural industries). The methods may include ethnography, close
readings of game titles, discourse analysis, and content analysis. The
successful applicants will join the grant as a funded part-time researchers.

Digital life and learning in the times of COVID-19 and beyond
The COVID-19 pandemic has played a profound role in people’s everyday
experiences, which have even more than before moved to digital and third
spaces. The potential two research projects would either qualitatively
or by applying mixed method research explore those experiences through
the lenses of digital and media literacy. One would be looking at
education of children, while the other at social relationships and
isolation. Both local and intercultural/international research projects
are welcomed. They need to be interdisciplinary by being theoretically
and/or methodologically rooted in media studies, as well as other
disciplines such as education, childhood studies, cultural anthropology,
philosophy, psychology, health, law, etc. Proposals of innovative
research approaches are especially encouraged. The project is in English.

Intolerant belief systems and their intersection in the online
communication
Western liberal democracies are polarizing along different lines and
this polarization is specifically visible in the online discussions on
various controversial topics. How does intolerance based on one
characteristic (for example age) relate to other intolerant belief
systems (gender, ethnicity, race, sexuality etc.)? How does intolerant
public online communication reflect societal norms and cultural
prejudice prevalent in the analysed culture? What is the role of
disinformation media in promoting the intolerant belief systems?
The phenomenon can be studied on various research topic and case studies
(ranging from politically exposed topics to debates among popular
culture fans). Studies are supposed to be rooted in theories on online
deliberation and its societal significance, intersectionality,
post-truth society and other relevant theories. Project focusing on
this field can be submitted in English or in Czech.

Political leadership – new challenges, crisis and issues
The Ph.D. project should focus on these topics (political leadership as
a marketing tool, changes in political communication, leadership crisis
facing new issues) in relations to Climate change, Covid 19 pandemic,
global migration etc., methodologically it can be approached from
different angles. Theoretically, it should be rooted in the political
marketing theory and political communication theory. The research can
either focus on a specific case study or do a more comparative approach.
This PhD project can also be submitted to the Czech-language PhD
programme in Media Studies.

Discursive constructions of the environment
This PhD position consists out of research into the discursive
construction of the environment, climate and/or human-nature
relationships, driven by a discourse-theoretical (or other
post-structuralist) framework, that allows for attention for the
workings of contingency, hegemony, materiality and discursive struggle.
The research can be located in variety of social fields, including
media, the arts and/or museums.

Emerging Ethical Boundaries in Marketing and Strategic Communication
Currently, the communication profession (marketing, advertising, public
relations, strategic, and digital communication) faces an unprecedented
shift due to new information and communication technologies. This
evolution also opens new questions and generates many new ethical
problems, such as using personal data and information, the ability of
the public (consumers, voters, customers) to understand the persuasive
nature of some communication forms, the rise of hybrid journalistic and
commercial products such as content or native advertising etc. We
welcome Ph.D. projects tackling changes in communication that focus on
an ethical aspect in the business field (covert advertising, ethical
issues in a specific subfield such as tobacco or alcohol advertising,
etc.) or research of the ability of the publics to understand persuasion.

Current Media and Marketing Trends and Research in Health Communication
Health Communication in the Czech Republic is still a rather unexplored
field, which has been highlighted recently due to the Covid19 crisis. We
focus on health communication in general (theory, state of the field,
expert interviews) or specific subfields, such as vaccination
communication or nutrition literacy. We offer an interdisciplinary
approach in cooperation with medical and health experts from medical
faculties and other departments at Charles University.

Environmental Communication and Corporate Social Responsibility
(with a possible focus on the fashion industry)
Recently, many fashion brands included sustainability and environmental
issues in their communication and actions and this issue is widely
reported also in academic literature (Köcksal, Strähle, Müller and
Freise, 2017; Yang, Song and Tong, 2017; Garcia-Torres, Rey-Garcia and
Albareda-Vivo, 2017; Resta, Gaiardelli, Pinto and Dotti, 2016). It is
not only the fashion brands talking about environment, but also
stakeholders play an important role in the dialogue between fashion
brands and its consumers. Recently, more consumers demand “brands with
purpose”, that communicate its social responsibility, includes societal,
political or environmental issues (Montgomery, 2019). We welcome Ph.D
project focusing on producer or consumer research in this field, not
only limited to fashion industry.

“Class Swap“: class-driven social experiments in Czech Reality
Television culture
This PhD. project will explore Reality Television programmes which are
grounded in swapping social positions of the upper-class participants
who are sent to socioeconomically adverse environments (such as Milionář
mezi námi [FTV Prima, 2020]; Experiment 21 [Prima Cool, 2020]; Utajený
šéf [TV Nova, 2017-20]; Zlatá mládež [ČT, 2016 a 2018], etc.)
International students are invited to select equivalent television
programmes produced in English. The project will be theoretically
informed by the scholarship on Reality Television as a neoliberal genre
transforming complex issue of social inequalities into the bipolar
structure of categories of “winners“ and “losers“. The study will follow
methodologies of content analysis, discourse analysis and narrative
analysis (or a combination thereof).

Discourses and practices of othering
This PhD position involves research in the broad area of othering. It is
expected to be driven by a post-structuralist approach, focussing on the
construction and practices of othering through, e.g. the media, the
arts, politics, or activism. Projects in this thematic area can examine,
for instance, the discourses and practices that create (old and new)
ethnic, political, cultural others, in specific contexts and/or at
different times, or how these practices can relate to social struggle
and resistance.
