Wow, I had my first lesson with PM Stuart Liddell in Scotland this morning, whom I think of as the greatest living GHB bagpiper, and he's very connectable in a great Scots' way, and humble too. (And due to the coronavirus pandemic, in Scotland, and no Worlds - World Pipe Band Competitions, in Glasgow - his Inveraray and District Pipe Band, which won The World's in 2019, won them by default in 2020 :) While Stuart is modest, he's also a Champion Piper, and keeps tabs on his trophies and winnings - https://www.stuartliddell.com/about - (which seems to have been great structure to focus his extraordinary playing over the decades too). Am appreciating his fundamental Scottishness, having lived 2 full years in Scotland.

Thanks so much again for the excellent lesson, and your listening. 
Exploring some ideas and questions that have come up (as someone who asks questions, as a way of thinking too):

Is it the building on previous learning aspects of The College of Piping's Tutors (Vols 1-Green, 3-Blue, & 4-Yellow-Piobaireachd) that might make them interesting to your Topicals? And could choosing most lyrical or musical or melodic In what ways could this be made interesting to potential Topicals' students?  
Regarding, playing Scottish small pipes with singing (with bellows) ... am exploring the idea of musical voices 'leading,' and thanks to the bellows with SSP, where it's potentially possible to sing AND pipe at the same time, and make harmony. But when you said the bagpipe is the boss (and I think of you too, as Mr. Bagpipe ... you're a master of bagpiping, Stuart, - thank you!), I'm wanting to lead with my voice singing the melody and small pipes playing the harmony (so the bagpipe here - per your comment - would explicitly not be boss, rather my singing the melody would be, but this isn't entirely easy for me). I'd like to make my voice singing melody be the boss, with the small pipes being the 'lad' or "following accompaniment, or similar.  
So in thinking about how to do something as simple as lead, by singing the melody of say 'Amazing Grace, while playing harmony on the chanter of the Scottish Small Pipes - where I personally can get lost in the Scottish Small Pipes being 'boss' in playing the 2nds, I find the following Guidelines for Practicing again helpful for figuring out how to practice and learn this anew (and since I dabble on the keyboard too which helps, the piano can become the boss too a bit for learning :) ... I also take a kind of thinking approach to all of this (which I think you said something about otherwise), and which has to do even with the word 'mind' and these 'Guidelines... ' ... where thinking opens ways to a kind of beneficial analytic approach to playing (I think:).

as I've been exploring singing with playing harmony on Scottish Small Pipes - Amazing Grace - I find I want to, newly, hear the 1st part as I sing it in my mind regarding "Yo-yo Ma says, never make a sound without hearing it first; hear it in your mind" - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm - so that my singing voice 'leads' ... am seeking even to learn 'exercises' for this, for how to hear a line of music in my mind, that is ... (and being able to play both lines on the keyboard helps, because I can learn the 'structure' of some of both 1st and 2nd parts). Thoughts about exercises for this (if you've explored this from a virtuosic GHB bagpiping perspective, and not necessarily from virtuosic western classical cello or virtuosic jazz trumpet perspective?)
And then, I wonder further what Yo-yo means re mind here: 
 4 Concentrate when you practice.Yo-yo says: join feelings into your music when you feel bad, to integrate your feelings with your mind and body.

which I could interpret, in one way, as playing light music I enjoy a lot in a way I enjoy (for the flow experience in part) ... when I'm feeling bad practicing a tune otherwise, for example. By changing tune to  play light music I enjoy I thus am able to integrate this in my mind (and body, with fingers playing) ... but there are many ways further to explore this. 
What do you do in concentrating when you practice (if you begin to feel bad ... and re the feelings word you mentioned in the lesson)?
Thoughts, ideas, questions, suggestions about all of this? 
Stuart might you also, experimentally, be interested in exploring singing or piping harmony at all with Scottish Small Pipes? (And regarding an experiment too with playing Amazing Grace in harmony over smartphones - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/04/magnolia.html - wherein you'll also find Amazing Grace in 5 parts, and which sheet music I can share with you if interested). Or do you do this already? (I haven't seen you singing with piping on Youtube or Vimeo before:).

Taylor, All,

Regarding further learning the Scottish small pipes, in new and beautiful and creative ways - 
exploring, I started to play my small pipes while singing some poems I've written, experimentally. (This exploring approach complements in a very freeing and different way Yo Yo Ma and Wynton Marsalis' guidelines for playing a musical instrument - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm )

I tried, too, playing small pipes with the 3 poems I read at the MIT Open Mic last Thursday 4/29/21 ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/04/pagosa-hot-springs-southern-colorado.html ...

Then looked up 'scottish smallpipes singing' and found this treat -

Liking the harmonies that emerge initially from the unison singing - it's an inspiration, and great to learn from. (What kind of song is this? Is it a Scottish 'song' of sorts? I think so).

Then, on the keyboard, I thought of finding my Blues' piano book for learning in new ways with singing, and freely and improvisationally ... 

and then, playing keyboard, I turned to my Pink and Blue Scottish Country Dance books ... where voila, there are so many tunes like the above Youtube tune, to explore with ... and found "Rowan Tree" in the Blue Book p. 65 (right above The Flower of Quern - https://youtu.be/9vCoWzl2jVY - which we've begun to play on the D mix chanter) for example. 

Searched on words for "Rowan Tree" and found the words below ... and this is all so doable ... in a brand new way ... 
To write some poetry further in meter and verse, that would allow singing in new ways with the small pipes? 
Bellows' blown small pipes open up worlds in these regards
Seeking in this process of exploring Scottish small pipes with singing with poetry and song ... to potentially say something (rather than to perfect musical pieces), as in songs of the '60s, that is about peace, for example! :)

In developing CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School (WUaS), planned online in all 200 countries, and in their official and main languages, as well as in all 7,139 known living languages as wiki schools for open teaching and learning, I wanted to touch base with you before this 5/26/21 EPIC conference to explore possibilities. A huge vision, WUaS is now partnering with edX, and seeking to offer online free-to-students' PhD programs and 4-year Bachelor degree programs. Part of the courses will come from MIT OCW into something like MITx, but in seeking a matriculating student body for 4 year Bachelor degrees, WUaS is also seeking students from all ~200 countries, first in English. Since English will be a second language for many years, I was excited to see Stanford EPIC's engagement with Global Community Colleges, and wonder what resources too may have emerged over the past coronavirus pandemic year, regarding online California Community College resources and classes. While WUaS seeks to accredit (WASC - which accredits Stanford and Cal) and license (BPPE - a 2 year process), a concurrent process - potentially in all 200 countries - this process is fraught newly online, and I'm wondering whether California Community College are navigating these waters already accredited, possibly by WASC and BPPE. (WUaS also seeks to accredit in the USA and CA, such that it would be like foreign students coming to on-the-ground Stanford or MIT, accredited, getting a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering, and then head back to their country at age 22, and pass a chemical engineering licensing exam in their country, administered that countries' Chemical Engineering Society and the nation state, or similar). ... And would it be possible for WUaS to explore accessing these online community CA college courses, and even 'upload' or adapt them to the WUaS-edX platform for grades and similar. It's the CC-4 - Creative Commons' 4 (allowing for 1) sharing, 2) adapting, but 3) NOT commercially, that will allow us not to ask for tuition from students)- which is why WUaS can't ask for tuition - so will be free-to-students - but WUAS can seek reimbursement from departments of education in all 200 countries (and will do so probably in WUaS G-Suite for Education). I just wanted to share all this with you, and potentially come into conversation about some of these questions, and some others as well as this 5/26 Stanford EPIC conference approaches. Thank you. Global warming reversal ?As I was walking my frequent walk in the coronavirus pandemic: up 1.8 miles to the very closed UU Church of Kensington / Berkeley and back yesterday, it was really foggy and cool yesterday.
 ... I recall fog here in the SF Bay Area in the '90s, but none this past winter north of Berkeley. I can hypothesize that FOG has been normal in the East Bay too (in addition to SF) for centuries in winter and summer but HAS not been here the past decades. (How do meteorologists record fog in CA, at the Uni etc? )
So, has coronavirus self quarantining downed the airlines and auto traffic for a year ... and is this even leading to facilitating reversing global warming :)? Kinda rad :)

I think it's a 2016 4th generation Toyota Prius c (44mpg? - and sleep-able) that's the answer for cross-country travel in a month, and not a 2003 Eurovan with a hand shower (18-22 mpg, and if I could find one that would make it:) Thoughts, ideas, questions, suggestions? 

What years did VW make Eurovan?
1993-2003 VW vans are called Eurovans.

So, newly, ...
Thought about contacting Cuttyhunk folks whom I've been emailing about a wind farm going up in Vineyard Sound again (after another Boston Globe wind farm article some Cuttyhunker friends sent me in 2009) per a new Globe article ... And asking if they had any ideas for 'Best small camper vans' some of whom might have hippy instincts (some of them being around in the '70s there, and actually putting up the Cuttyhunk Windmill at the Cuttyhunk west end), but probably won't...
My little Toyota Prius C - a grey sea tortoise it appears - will be my surf-across-the-country conveyance ... May even travel under 'controlling processes' to use a phrase Laura Nader, a former UC Berkeley Anthropology professor of mine of 'Clasdsic Ethnographies' (and sister of Ralph, and longtime Berkeleyite),  used to describe some identity's tactics I think ...

I wonder also if there's a way to contact Google itself somehow in these regards, since they have a big oceans' project, and maybe a relationship with Woods Hole Oceanographic Research Center - and even through its head of research and AI Peter Norvig, who went to Brown University in the 1970s. It seems like it's the little details that could be tweaked (eg distance from Cuttyhunk re noise, Cuttyhunk interoperability with this grid without significant costs, or could Cuttyhunk also some get wind energy or sell from its amazing solar panel farm to this emerging energy grid, apart from wind generation) at an early stage in the development, and make a big difference - possibly to the benefit of Cuttyhunk.

Overview

World University and School's mission is to offer free university degrees and IB high school diplomas to students in their own countries and in their own languages, building upon Open Courseware in its current languages, and to facilitate Wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all living languages. WUaS is currently in the process of partnering with edX (founded by Anant Agarwal, a MIT and Harvard Professor, and the CEO of EdX) to offer online free-to-students' Bachelor and PhD programs in the autumn 2021. This would start in English, with students matriculating from as many as 200 countries. WUaS plans to license and accredit at the university and high school levels for its online degrees and diplomas, including Bachelor, PhD, Law, MD and IB high school, in the countries' main languages - http://worlduniversityandschool.org. Our Wikis will involve open and editable people-to-people teaching and learning, both creative and academic (see - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects), but will also involve non-editable courses prepared under a Creative Commons’ license. With time, WUaS will use universal translators to extend the project automatically to any language. Part of WUaS's focus will include an academic press (http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html) with machine translation and learning. Due to the rapid spread of broadband worldwide, WUaS plans to make this accessible to underserved parts of the world and to poor people everywhere.

Frank, if you were seeking to reply to my questions, I’d clarify with: in the laying out of roads, for ex., in computer simulations, with costs and returns, and in each of the countries of the world (eg African, & Silk Road countries), how could such VR modeling be extended to, for example, electricity systems’ modeling (and its economics), to city development modeling in VR simulations (including AutoCad architecture and probably road programming, with costs and returns in the coding), and their economics, and even with people as avatars, and related economic questions?  In doing so, could one use, again, the data categories, for example, and from the World Bank’s 1985 paper, with its focus on individual countries, and their infrastructure, for example? Dear Paul and David, 
Greetings from the SF Bay Area. In developing CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School, planned in 200 countries and in 7,139 known living languages as wiki schools for open teaching and learning, I'm reaching out to you to explore how we might collaborate further. Paul, I was glad to come upon your resources below (eg https://www.ethnologue.com/ethnoblog/mpl/languages-world-numbers -and regarding how you think too), having long been interested in the Ethnologue, and its process for languages' inclusion, for ex. And David, I came to a talk you gave at Stanford Anthropology on Language Diversification on May 16, 2011, and took a few notes, (but can't find the Stanford URL for this interestingly); nice to meet you again here. 
For your information, and regarding how World University and School works (like CC-4 MIT OCW in 4 languages with Wikipedia in 300 languages), WUaS donated ourselves to Wikidata which is Wikipedia's "back end" structured knowledge database in 2017 in ~300 languages, received the WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki in 2017 as a 'front end" - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages - and, in late 2020, began to develop in their Wikibase platform with 'languages,' 'courses,' 'individuals,' too (see, this for examples or how these work - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2020/12/sat-dec-19-2020-wuas-minutes-for-open.html?view=sidebar). And WUaS is planning to code for speakers of all 7,139 known living languages - each a Wikidata Q-item # or similar - and for all 7.8 billion people on the planet as well, and for language revitalization and generation and schools, probably in G-Suite for Education (which this email address is part of). Eventually, WUaS seeks to create academic careers and jobs (as many as 2.2 million possibly, and on both wings of WUaS) in all these 7,139 languages - which is one way that collaboration could develop. And as WUaS develops with the Wikidata platform, I'd think your knowledge of languages, and your information technology resources could be invaluable as well. How might we explore proceeding here and in collaboration, as the WUaS platform grows, and seeks eventually to add another 6,800 languages, beyond the 300 in Wikidata and Wikipedia? Might you both consider becoming Board Members even at WUaS? WUaS currently has not begun to hire, but as we grow, I think Board Membership will become potentially remunerative as well. It's particularly the wiki aspect for people-to-people teaching and learning, and even regarding free universal education, potentially highest quality too (regarding MIT OCW in its 4 languages), that may lead to the growing of great online language communities in all 7,139 languages. Scottish small pipes with singing

Regarding further learning the Scottish small pipes, in new and beautiful and creative ways - 
exploring, I started to play my small pipes while singing some poems I've written, experimentally. (This exploring approach complements in a very freeing and different way Yo Yo Ma and Wynton Marsalis' guidelines for playing a musical instrument - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm)

So, in addition to small piping with a poem from June 2009 - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2009/06/hills-are-brown-in-canyon-now.html ...

I tried, too, playing small pipes with the 3 poems I read at the MIT Open Mic last Thursday 4/29/21 ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/04/pagosa-hot-springs-southern-colorado.html ...

Then looked up 'scottish smallpipes singing' and found this treat -

Liking the harmonies that emerge initially from the unison singing - it's an inspiration, and great to learn from. (What kind of song is this? Is it a Scottish 'song' of sorts? I think so).

(And one could explore this with two musicians initially - https://youtu.be/a8fUv6psT3Y - although I like the first Maggie Lauder better).


Then, on the keyboard, I thought of finding my Blues' piano book for learning in new ways with singing, and freely and improvisationally ... 

and then, playing keyboard, I turned to my Pink and Blue Scottish Country Dance books ... where voila, there are so many tunes like the above Youtube tune, to explore with ... and found "Rowan Tree" in the Blue Book p. 65 (right above The Flower of Quern - https://youtu.be/9vCoWzl2jVY - which we've begun to play on the D mix chanter) for example. 

Searched on words for "Rowan Tree" and found the words below ... and this is all so doable ... in a brand new way ... 
To write some poetry further in meter and verse, that would allow singing in new ways with the small pipes? 
Bellows' blown small pipes open up worlds in these regards
Seeking in this process of exploring Scottish small pipes with singing with poetry and song ... to potentially say something (rather than to perfect musical pieces), as in songs of the '60s, that is about peace, for example! :)

Dear Paul and David, 
Greetings from the SF Bay Area. In developing CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School, planned in 200 countries and in 7,139 known living languages as wiki schools for open teaching and learning, I'm reaching out to you to explore how we might collaborate further. Paul, I was glad to come upon your resources below (eg https://www.ethnologue.com/ethnoblog/mpl/languages-world-numbers -and regarding how you think too), having long been interested in the Ethnologue, and its process for languages' inclusion, for ex. And David, I came to a talk you gave at Stanford Anthropology on Language Diversification on May 16 2011, and took a few notes, (but can't find the Stanford URL for this interestingly); nice to meet you again here. 
For your information, and regarding how World University and School works (like MIT OCW in 4 languages with Wikipedia in 300 languages), WUaS donated ourselves to Wikidata which is Wikipedia's "back end" structured knowledge database in 2017 in ~300 languages, received the WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki in 2017 as a 'front end" - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages - and, in late 2020, began to develop in their Wikibase platform with 'languages' too (see, this for examples or how these work - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2020/12/sat-dec-19-2020-wuas-minutes-for-open.html?view=sidebar). And WUaS is p;lanning to code for speakers of all 7,139 known living languages - each a Wikidata Q-item # or similar - and for all 7.8 billion people on the planet as well, and for language revitalization and generation and schools, probably in G-Suite for Education (which this email address is part of). MIT OCW is currently in 4 languages (formerly in as many as 10 languages), and in WUaS partnering with edX (founded by MIT, Anant Agarwal, Harvard) currently, WUaS seeks too to offer online free-to-students' MIT OCW-centric Bachelor, PhD, Law, MD and IB high school degrees to students in all ~ 200 countries (per Olympics) - in their main languages.

Eventually, WUaS seeks to create academic careers and jobs (as many as 2.2 million possibly, and on both wings of WUaS) in all these 7,139 languages - which is one way that collaboration could develop. And as WUaS develops with the Wikidata platform, I'd think your knowledge of languages, and your information technology resources could be invaluable as well. How might we explore proceeding here and in collaboration, as the WUaS platform grows, and seeks eventually to add another 6900 languages, beyond the 300 in Wikidata and Wikipedia? Might you both consider becoming Board Members even at WUaS? WUaS currently has not begun to hire, but as we grow, I think Board Membership will become potentially remunerative as well. It's particularly the wiki aspect for people-to-people teaching and even regarding free universal education, potentially highest quality too (regarding MIT OCW in its 4 languages), that may lead to the growing of great online language communities in all 7139 languages. Hi Ma,
Good to keep moving, and free in a sense - and especially if we find our way thanks to science past 122 years of age. So glad you got out for an almost 2 mile walk, and played pickle ball for an hour! 
I got out for a 30+ minute walk after we talked, and after doing Yoga in the morning (daily as well). And nice to talk too. Glad you're enjoying your architecture class. 
Will bagpipe again today ... looking for inspiration in practicing (and found it last night by listening to Stuart Liddell play Gordon Duncan's Thunderstruck for one ... and glad lessons are emerging with Stuart Liddell, who's an extraordinary piper:)

SketchUp is now from Google - and could it work well in Google Street View with Time Slider eventually ?
So I immediately downloaded the SketchUp Viewer from Google Play, created an account, can now view .skp files ... And it says there's an Augmented Reality possibility ... It offers 2 examples too ... A Dance Studio and the SketchUp Logo ... To familiarize oneself with it 
Seems like you Cathy & Steve, and you Mark have already recently built architecture for the 21st century in your new homes ... 
Am curious not only how easy it would be to add their plans now to SketchUp for further dreaming, ... and play design explorations -;in the viewer (I didn't download the design program itself)
But also whether I could play with physical Lego Robotics virtual in SketchUp

Thank you so much for these bagpiping Topical Lessons' opportunities. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to learn from you. I mentioned the dates of MWF next week (of May 10, 2021) at 5pm Scotland time (which may be 9am Pacific Time in the SF Bay Area), when I registered, but Tuesdays and Thursdays could work as well (and Mondays might not be so good after all, since I hold a WUaS News and Q&A in the hour after this possible Topical time), and other times would be possible too at your convenience. 
I'm playing the Scottish Small Pipes these days (with parallels to the practice chanter), and am interested to learn how your Topicals work (learning most 'lyrical' Piobaireachd?, eg Desperate Battle of the Birds for me; how to play expressively like you do :); questions even about band playing, but in this case a Scottish Country Dance band in Berkeley, with Small Pipes?; exploring playing also with the SSP baritone drone?; even improvising or riffing with Piobaireachd with other music eg Allman Bros in 1973, very experimentally, and even with this with Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning in the future :); real, real time online music-making - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/04/magnolia.html ; conversation, thinking & networking with the group in the lessons?; are recordings of these lessons possible, for future learning, possibly please?). I was intending running monthly sessions at the end of each month which would be announced on the news section.  They would be very general and individual topics such as tuning, embellishments, perhaps a particular tune, practice techniques, etc along with some kind of handout. 

Your request is probably a bit more personalised and would likely be more beneficial as a one to one lesson. 

I would be happy to meet up on zoom for half an hour at one of the times you suggest or perhaps you would like to suggest a generalised topic that would be beneficial to yourself and others and go with a group session at the end of the month?

I recently read something in a piping article about teacher-student relationships, and that someone went to their teacher for 25 years or so. I would learn so much from you and your virtuosic bagpipe playing if this could develop.

Regarding coronavirus gene vaccinations, and your Scottish Country Dance Berkeley survey, Bruce, I've read that one can't choose the brand of one's vaccine at Kaiser Permanente, for ex., and with all the various Vaccines creating blood clots, death, brain injuries, etc  - and that they didn't go through rigorous FDA clinical trials in the US, for ex., before administration by the medical profession, - I found this Swedish newspaper article about Denmark eye opening (for 2 other countries' perspectives, and regarding kinds of unscientific unthinking authoritarianism too) ...

Yay, for virtual SCD dancing and music-making ? The lack of widespread testing too, in the SF Bay Area (that I've observed), makes me think the genes for SarsCoV2 have done a major disappearing act :)
I'd think that, however, the Coronavirus gene meme (replicating cultural unit) in the internet News' media could be being used for other reasons, like protecting victims -  (and these others, plus more reasons in blog over past 13 months) http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/04/himalyan-monal-how-are-harbin-hot.html?m=0 - and that, for example, abolishing (in a Friendly Quaker sense, re slavery, - exactly too) and not just for significantly lessening the illegal sex industry, as part of this, - could have much benefit (to protect the innocent particularly - and regarding effective law enforcement esp.). 
I haven't heard of any (of 200) countries enacting laws requiring vaccination, of unscientifically-tested vaccines either. But I bet they're out there ... Anyone?
