This Thursday at the Mental Sciences Club, from 4:00 to 5:30, we are excited to welcome Dr Maiya Jordan, who is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow in philosophy. She will be talking to us about “A Non-Doxastic Account of Self-Deception”.

Abstract Regarding someone who self-deceives that P, what is the nature of her professed belief that P? Doxastic accounts hold that it is a genuine belief. Non-doxastic accounts deny this. In particular, the pretence account holds that the self-deceiver’s professed belief is a pretence that she believes that P. I argue that the truth lies somewhere between these two positions. The self-deceiver’s professed belief is a pretence that she believes that P, but it is a pretence that is distinctively restricted, because necessarily misrepresented by her as a genuine belief. The result is that she sometimes acts as if she believes that P, and other times acts as if she does not so believe.

Thanks for the questions! I haven't really thought about self-deception in other animals. Certainly, we see clear cases of deception. Here's a tired thought: penguins are particularly funny when deceiving other penguins. A deceitful penguin will present himself very innocently to his dupe, having stealthily stolen stones from their nest to make his own nest building easier. It's just that 'misrepresenting oneself as sincere' that my argument deploys: applied reflexively in self-deception, it renders self-deception instantaneous and non-doxastic. 
I've attached the slides here, though they're really just a condensed version of the paper I send you earlier. I hope they're useful anyhow!

Thank you for replying, - and when you must be exhausted, after your excellent talk.  
The role of the social scientific researcher (ethologist, primatologist - even sociocultural anthropologist with a whole other set of questions, and methodological issues regarding reflexivity) here with penguins or primates, regarding the role of the philosopher suggesting arguments for how self-deception works in the abstract, and possibly subjectively regarding consciousness questions (ie the intractable challenge of bringing the 1st person with self-reporting via language, and 3rd person scientific accounts together), come to mind - and from your talk too. 
So much seems to be created symbolically with the philosopher's language, regarding the sincerity of the penguins, ie 'It's just that 'misrepresenting oneself as sincere' that my argument deploys: applied reflexively in self-deception, it renders self-deception instantaneous and non-doxastic' where what's real or imaginary (in Lacan's 'mirror 'register) seems open to interpretation as self-deception, instantaneous and non-doxastic. How best to communicate about this, in penguins, for example (and presumably with video recordings as data), further to bring out further clarity? Thanks so so much for the clarification. Came across this cow & calf in photo at dusk on my walk today, just before a very nice 3-way lookout on a saddle ... nice to see (and the rusty basin is to their left up a hill). After a long uphill walk on nice evening, turned around here. What is cow consciousness, I've been asking myself.

They're aware, and am not sure how much they remember, and herd connection seems to be part of their 'thereness' - as consciousness. Their cattle consciousness is different from bat consciousness, and dog consciousness for ex. Not clear how a scientist would characterize their consciousness (how in their brains bodymind what we could call consciousness finds form) ...or if Cows could talk, how they would characterize it from the 'inside.' (Or how I'd characterize this ...) ... so am not sure how to bring the 3rd and 1st person or bodymind (re cows) accounts together, but I'd suggest cow consciousness has parallels with human consciousness.

Their awareness as consciousness is in their vision & other senses - and somehow in cow cognition - but living in fields, and eating grass, and with no language, their consciousness seems staid ... and also not language-centric. What is cow consciousness further, I wonder ... and as a way to think about human consciousness ?

Am asking what is "cattle consciousness" ... that is, what is it like to be a cattle / cow? Perhaps this means, per your email, what is it like to see like a cattle (singular) and re the details that a cattle might see with awareness and consciousness - both objectively and subjectively (which like the impossibility, at this time, of reconciling the 1st and 3rd person accounts linguistically for humans - or 1st and 3rd bodymind in the case of a cattle, male or female) ... or bringing together a scientific view of a cattle's consciousness with a 'personal' or better 'cattle-centric' account what they are aware of ... (In writing this, am observing newly some linguistic challenges too in exploring these questions philosophically in words :)

Consciousness, philosophically - western, is a mystery ... and re Yoga it's about a kind of oneness with the Seer, big S ... a very different account and contextualizing of ideas and experiences :)

'Consciousness easy and hard problems' (see below, and re Chalmers) - and "What is it like to be a bat?" essay inform some of these questions ... but it's fascinating per your observation that we're seeing new details during this pandemic ... and how would this work regarding becoming conscious in new ways?

Double protection against nothing - nothing but the common cold or flu, I postulate (potentially in preparing for bio-warfare, however) ... And these cold viruses are inside you anyway (as rhinoviruses, which may be older language, given advances of the past year) ... 
... And, 1) the Pfizer vaccine is only 95% effective - hardly protective enough in an emergency situation, but pretty good in a fire drill scenario, and 2) with it I can still become herd immune, - and still get sick - since I can pick up a common cold or flu virus from someone else, and still develop antibodies against these ... A fine situation we're in :))

How are you?  How’s life in the big city?

I saw your note about vaccines and Cuttyhunk.  I don’t think you need to be vaccinated to travel to MA.  But possible you might have to quarantine a while depending on local rules. 

Unless you have a medical issue with vaccinations, I think wise to go ahead and get it done.  My colleagues and family members have all been vaccinated.  My main concern was my dad who is 87.  He and my stepmother got vaccinated about six weeks ago with no issues.  I finished up my set in January mainly so I could travel since the new job has me on the road a lot.  Off to Saudi Arabia on Monday.

Life in the big city is a bit too self-quarantined, & isolated, but am coping (Yoga meditation, Desiderata, developing my career as head of World Univ & Sch, talking with my mother mostly, web writing, bagpiping, - and continuing to seek a life partner with whom to begin a family), so am appreciating your email as diplomat especially - and regarding your vaccine thinking, coming from you. I think your email allays some of my concerns about bad actors in the medical system, for example - and risks thereof. (And getting this vaccine could lead to getting aging reversal genetic drug vaccines too, - and living beyond 122 years old - when and if they become available and are FDA tested, where the coronavirus vaccine didn't go through rigorous FDA clinical trials, the genetics of SARSCoV2 transmission in the News, and regarding available to the public data, seem so spurious). Glad your 87 year old father did well with the vaccine. 
Glad too World Univ & Sch is proceeding apace - with one prospective WUaS PhD program student in Indonesia sending in the MIT OCW courses - in statistics & economics - he'd like to take this autumn. Glad too that all 3 legal entities of WUaS are developing, with the 501c3's 990-N card being accepted by the IRS just before 5/17/21.

The brother of the head of Longwood where my mother lives now died, possibly via vaccine ...

I got a shot in an empty Kaiser Permanente temporary facility at Marriott Conference Center room in Oakland, no wait, no lines, no cost to write of, for the Taoist in me - & in case of emergency for bioterrorism and bio-warfare I hypothesize (see 4/1/20 blog post, & many others). 

Was the injection spiked per the Salk Institute? Did it cause numbness in left arm?
Seemed to have lost my agency and reasoning with my mother's use of the modal verb "can't " last night-  as in 'you can't go to Cuttyhunk without getting shot up'.... Serious losses - if they lead to death esp .. No laws required this possible death dose ... Yet laws prohibit the illegal sex industry ... HAVE PEOPLE been killed with spiked vaccines ? ... Are the law suits accumulating against the perpetrators ? Wouldn't excellent psychiatry have been a better approach to societal crimes potentially by perpetrators, and victims, if both may have committed crimes? Both federal and most state laws criminalize sex offenders, prostitutes, pimps etc  I think ... Whereas cannabis has passed some state legal thresholds, but not federal legalization ... What happened to law enforcement in all of this over the past year? What happened to the institutions and decision makers in all of this? Another example of social psychology experiments per Stanford's Phil Zimbardo's prisoner and guard experiments and many others?
Don't think I'm gonna be able to make it to Cuttyhunk with the side effects ... lost some respect for my mother's reasoning and listening skills too - re reports of deaths, injury and brain damage from the covid-19 vaccine ... 
If what's being measured in tests is like the common cold, and spiked doses are killing - what is the evidence here (and is this impossible to glean given the lies of the internet News' media?) - is this bio-warfare preparation worth it when it's still very imaginary, a fantasy that may have been used to kill people ??? "You have tested with something I call Covid-19, therefore the state gets to kill you?" ... Pretty messed up unethical world, yielding billions for big Pharma ... Alas!

Tym, 
Got the vaccine shot yesterday afternoon, and with minimal side effects I observe this morning. Was told by Kaiser, after selecting the Pfizer / Moderna option on the web site, over the Johnson & Johnson option, that I got a Pfizer vaccine and not a Moderna vaccine.
I wanted to know however this morning, if I could have determined somehow with a test, after getting the shot, if I had gotten a spiked MRNA vaccine version - via rapid testing even (and get out the spike at the molecular level rapidly too) - and which I might have downloaded even for my smartphone and combined with even somehow the Apple Google smartphone contact tracing App. Alas, no luck! 
Would have preferred herd immunity for myself, over getting the vaccine ... And I guess the ~ 5% Pfizer ineffectiveness still is an opportunity for herd immunity effects to take effect of a sort. 
Could my mother have known that a dose - perhaps earlier in US biowarfare-preparedness, and other aspects of the US medical cultural psychiatric international system cleanup - could have been spiked and killed? And about the relative ineffectiveness of this genetic vaccine (re 5%), and all of this (same with masks) ... regarding preventing genetic transmission ... And that this vaccine may be potentially a jump started biological stab at the flu ... and further developments, faster, in the genetic engineering revolution (even regarding aging reversal genetic drug therapies)? ??
Am remembering too family friend and psychiatrist (Lacanian psychoanalytic - but who probably as a Yale grad had good working knowledge of psychopharmaceuticals) George Alexander MD's strategic thinking for getting tested if one wondered whether one had gotten AIDS (and he identified as gay, homosexual, although he had 3 kids, and a wife - and probably could be characterized as bi instead???) - without letting the medical system know definitively that an individual had been tested positive for HIV (since it could lead to loss of insurance, stigmatization, possibly loss of job in some cultural contexts at some times, etc.) - to pool 3 people's blood together with the fore-knowledge that 2 most likely didn't have AIDS ... which is smart to my way of thinking ... 
"Trust" in the system I think is something my mother has mentioned a number of times, but  both building a culture of "Ethics" - so of "Trust," and building effective, and enforceable, "Law," language-wise in all 200 countries and culture-wise too - and especially "Reasoning" to me here, per the George A. example, seems more basic and significant ... and my agency to reason kind of flew out the window when my mother last night said "you can't go to Cuttyhunk unless you're vaccinated" ... (and it doesn't make sense to let the MacLeod Cuttyhunk house somehow slide away from disuse somehow because of other narratives of the coronavirus pandemic - illegal sex trade, and also possibly perpetrator / sexual offender issues on Cuttyhunk ? - and like which might even have been playing out in the summer of the 2020 and re the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club??? ... I love you like a third brother (so please take this small dose of sisterly tough-love when I say) stop worrying about the vaccine! Literally everyone I work with or am related to or socialize with has gotten both doses of one of the two dose vaccines without incident. My brother Tom, who is an Oncologist, my sister-in-law who is a nurse, my son who is a nurse practitioner have all gotten vaccinated. Even my hippy brother who has a skeptical view of pretty much every formal institution has gotten vaccinated. Tim has done nothing but give covid vaccine shots to clinic patients for the past two months, all day every day, and has had one (count 'em one) patient with an adverse reaction, which was treated successfully with an epi pen.

Are you old enough to have gotten a smallpox inoculation and polio vaccination when you were little? I am old enough to have gotten them, along with shots for measles and rubella. Getting those shots wasn't just to protect us; they were to protect the whole community, and they did.
Ask yourself to what purpose it would benefit either the government or big pharma to kill off constituents or customers?
I prescribe more walks in the country, more playing music, and less time on the internet! The danger to our mental health from falling down covid-centered rabbit holes is real and pernicious.

I rejoice that you are on the way to being fully vaccinated and able to gather un-virtually and share music and especially DANCE again! Can't wait to see you the next time you pass through the 'burgh, when I will hug you maniacally, then drag you off to go Scottish country dancing.

Well done.  Glad you went for it.  Impressed how efficient it was.   Side effects seem quite normal.  They can be fairly severe for a day or two, according to my colleagues.
I live in mostly a fully vaccinated universe:  colleagues, family, friends, foreign contacts. 
Interestingly, the airlines could give a damn about the vaccine.  What they want to see is a Covid test in the last 48-96 hours before boarding.  They don’t even ask about the vaccine.  So while vaccinated, I get tested all the time in order to travel.  
As far as I know, there is no entity or locale in the US that requires a vaccination in order to enter.  So I hope you proceed to Cuttyhunk.  Seems like a good change of pace, breath of fresh air.  And social too.  I am sure you have friends there.   And with the vaccination no issues about hanging out with people. 
I was in Shelter Island last weekend and it was so blissful.  I can imagine same for Cuttyhunk. 
Glad to see your references to the bag pipes.  Must be immensely satisfying!

I've been wondering about institutions, vaccines, & illegal activity - and even what to do about significantly lessening illegal behavior - so am glad you mentioned institutions in reply, and regarding your hippy brother in LA whom I've never met.
Regarding social media, the Web, and such, - with Twitter I've been un-following what could be illegal institutions, illegally acting individuals and what could also be conflicts of interest (speculatively & inferentially - and all regarding the law) which Twitter pops up on my smartphone App ... Such a little thing for a social media site to code for this - why? (and re institutions too) - and for little me to consistently unfollow each and every one, and inference-wise could agree with Twitters' algorithm that does this regarding the law, if my inferences are correct, - based on what they've learned and deduced in their maturing curation processes (in their kind of watchtower role) ... and in what I see in the symbolizing of the Twitter accounts they pop up.
This could be applied to WUaS planning - and possibly to individuals like my mother, hypothetically and speculatively, disengaging from institutions that might be conducting illegal business, like fundraising in exchange for sexual favors (but which my mother may not even know about for certain, as a Board member, say, of the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society) ... And which, if occurring, could put Board members at great risk, if the legal & sociocultural winds were to change again (after already a dramatically changing in this past year, with the possible bio-warfare-preparation or prevention coronavirus pandemic scenario unfolding, and with new vaccine production esp. ... Ed, thoughts about get the coronavirus anti-viral vaccines with the deaths, illness and brain injury that have been reported this far in the News?
My mother is saying I can't go to Cuttyhunk without getting vaccinated ... even though I have a KP Appointment in my organizer I could show people if asked, and there are no laws or regulations about requiring vaccines that I've seen (suggesting that it's unnecessary, and to my way of thinking, not worth getting). So I think I won't be heading there toward the end of June.

You mentioned on the phone this evening that the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society is starting up again - in person - and I'll keep my ears open for how other related organizations are approaching a potential change in operating, post Covid-19, with the possibility of returning to 'business as usual' (and even regarding sadly the illegal sex industry) ... which is perhaps an issue for Cuttyhunk too ... If requiring a vaccination isn't the answer for a change in behavior, what is??? (... and possibly regarding the illegal sex industry here too, where calling the police could upset an organization's ecosystem, yet could definitely be worth it for many involved, I'd posit ... but this is not as easy on Cuttyhunk, since the policeman could be corrupt, and there's no one else to call - except possibly federal authorities, ... as it possibly could be in Pittsburgh). Thoughts, questions, ideas, suggestions? Time to get off the PCMS Board if there are serious risks potentially?  
Sorry if it's been a rough year for you too, Ma, and I think it's worth lowering risks re the PCMS Board, for example, - and also for me to start a family ... but with whom? . . .  could even by 'on the couch' - ie psychoanalytically . . .  - and in psychotherapist-rich Oxford, England, and potentially for good reason, how to meet and connect with a potential life partner out here, who could be seeing a therapist, and who's attractive, - except that Ed on our walk said seeing a family therapist isn't done very much at KP, where SSS - stress, sleep and sex - are the modus operandi ... but probably not in Oxford, England, among a group of academic people willing and able  to pay for psychiatry even).
I don't think a . . .  moving out here to California from Oxford, - were we somehow to connect in writing, and seek to connect further, brainstorming-wise - would be very sensible because I don't think there's a culture here that would support psychotherapeutic fully-informed thinking norms, and costs ... and s. . . . And I"m keeping in mind my career regarding the Desiderata and World Univ & Sch based in California, for now, until I start doing outreach ...

Hi Scott, I really don't know much about virtual earth for architecture. I use contraction / AutoCAD mostly to contrast the very poor software support of contracts with an industry - construction - that is much further ahead in terms for supporting their business with software. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks so much for your message. Am envisioning a realistic virtual earth for everything - think Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth, TensorFlowAI, Translate, with avatar bots even - and am wondering how such successful entrepreneurial approach to architecture which is AutoCAD, for both architectural design, and computational contracts, might integrate, or benefit from the TensorFlowAI, or develop further benefits for AutoCAD such as environmental costs and issues, and similar. Am also interested in how AutoCAD might work in all ~200 countries, potentially with legal contracts too. How might you think such developments improve on AutoCAD, and the very poor software support of contracts with an industry - construction - regarding business software questions? Would love to stay in communication about all of this as well (and regarding CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch, planned in ~200 countries and in their main languages). Do you use AutoCAD in both Denmark and Germany, by any chance? How do the computational contracts, if they work in both systems (as early as they may be) work?


Martin:
The computational contracts that we work with presently are not construction related - our current test cases are loan contracts and IT operations contracts. As such our platform is not related to AutoCAD at all.


That is not to say that it could not be. There are certainly potentially relevant touch points between AutoCAD and our platform. For instance AutoCAD supports BIM which is for instance used for reviewing the building for non compliance with the specification and running the remediation process. It would be great to connect this data to the construction contract logic to for instance determine the consequences of failing to remediate in a timely fashion.


Scott:
SketchUp is Google-related, now architectural software. Am curious how a parallel to AutoCAD architectural software with much better computer contracts might emerge. A life partner out of a LRY tradition (UUA) somehow? :)
I just learned that LRY - Liberal Religious Youth - of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), active it seems in the 1960s and 1970s, ended about 1981 or '82 ... having blogged about them here on Sunday - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/05/psittacula-non-theist-quakers-psychiatry.html - and regarding the terms 'Little Red Yogis,' as well (which Kevin Bell, around 1981-82, had called Little Red Yogis, in the Brooklyn Street House which his sister Diane owned, and which I lived in on and off from around 1980 to 1987, I think, and which was a Reed collective, or Reed House, - and see above blog post ) ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_Religious_Youth

I'd think LRY were a very exploratory group of UU-circle hippy young people in a fascinating time - the '60s and '70s - around the world, and especially in the USA, culturally, regarding creative alternative cultural explorations ...

A life partner out of a LRY background, I wonder? A MD who is 25 and has time in her life to have kids too? ... But I am also a bit 'old fashioned' or 'traditional' in relationships ... 2 terms a family friend George Alexander MD used re life partner (like his standing by The Desiderata below - which I find illuminating, and re World Univ & Sch too)  ... Identity questions - many here - for me too, I think ...

And thank you for the opportunity for WUaS to focus further on World University and School growth with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare courses (in 4 languages), and CC-3 Yale University OpenYaleCourses - in WUaS seeking to become a major online university in each of 200 countries. (WUaS seeks to do so initially by hiring potentially Quaker graduate student instructors, via Friends' institutions, to teach 'to' these OCW and OYC, for example). Thank you too for the growth opportunity for WUaS to focus on coding for 7.8 billion people in 200 countries, and in 7,139 known living languages, in G-Suite for Education, for ex., as wiki teachers and learners too (with Wikidata in 300 languages), and as matriculating students - for, people-to-people, free universal wiki education in these languages, in addition to free Bachelor, PhD, Law, MD and IB degrees in 200 countries' main languages.

While WUaS continues to be very degree focused, we also think that wiki people-to-people education - where people can become the teachers of what they love, or know how, to easily teach - will potentially facilitate some of the aspects all of these SXSW panelists talked about.
