Glad former Reed President John Kroger is returning to Portland (from being VP at the Aspen Institute) to teach a class on Jurisprudence at Lewis & Clark Law School. Maybe he can address any legal cases that emerged at Reed while there - in a physical courtroom, or law offices. I ask in the process of developing CC-4 MIT OCW-centric, wiki World University and School planned in ~200 countries, per the Olympics, 7,139 languages, per the number of known living languages in the world, and brainstorming-wise for all 7.8 billion people on the planet eg here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University - conceptually, and as wiki teachers and learners (where Wikipedia is in 300 languages). . . . it made me wonder whether this microscope, PICTURED, which patents may have been usurped, could be the perfect instrument to reengineer and send to Mars (which could be easier since it may have been usurped - and patents are more fungible with time in the information technology revolution; think all the back and forth between patents in 2 main smartphones), and for even #FilmTo3D App processes at the molecular and cellular levels- and further, with those rubber-like hands covered in gloves, pictured, could even robots operate it on the way, hypothetically to Mars, and for clean laboratory environment reasons too? So would this be the microscope - if Pascal Mayer could somehow get the patents back - that would be able to be adapted to video at the cellular and atomic levels the chemistry of say grape vines - and do the Actual<>Virtual, Physical<>Digital back and forths and partly into something like Google Poly conceptually which is a library of virtual objects, and closing this June, but with what comes after?

Hi Scott,Sounds good - I am swamped for a bit. Since I turned 65 years old earlier this year, I plan to retire from IBM on June 30th and to head to East Coast for a couple weeks. Would be great to talk when I get back from Maine. Just swamped right now with wrap up plans and everything else.I knew a lot of NY and MA rich kid hippies, that moved to farms in ME when I was a kid growing up. Have known some CA hippies, but do not know any OR hippies, except maybe Augustina - but not sure she identifies as a hippy. More of a bohemian artist type, who also knows a lot about technology - which is how I got to know her when she worked at IBM.

Sounds like Augustina might not need the Pi cryptocurrency or the benefits of a Universal Basic Income, then. Am deeply impoverished here (and living in a 'safe house' as well, quite sadly) ... so I do ... and I keep mining Pi daily, although one can't buy anything with it. Talking by phone potentially toward the end of July ethnographically sounds good ... am curious even how to create ethnographic interviews which transcribe to word documents, and do more ... and even also for ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy, perhaps into Google Street View with time slider, text-in-the-sidebar even.
Big congratulations on your upcoming retirement, Jim! It's a remarkable high-achieving milestone! Hi Jim, Great, and looking forward to talking as well - perhaps in a video conference too (in Google Meet for example, which WUaS is in)? WUaS hasn't been able to scale whatsoever yet so as to be able to collaborate with the UN for example. And I think that not only do they have the goal to eliminate poverty worldwide, they also have a history getting mobile phone devices to the largest refugee camps in the world, eg in east Africa (with as many as 300,000 in a camp) ... which devices will be important, with cards potentially too, for getting free minable money to the poorest of all 7.8 billion people. How to go from say, Humphrey Chadbourne who married Sarah Bolles, who is supposed to have predecessors in a line back to Edward I in the late 1200s- early 1300s ... in WikiTree? I'm adding my questions for further conversation, and wonder please if I might see your paper (or slides) which you mentioned might be available. - or even possibly please the video recording?

This is a reminder that our final meeting of the term will be held today from 4:00 to 5:30 when Henry Shevlin (senior research associate at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence) will be presenting his paper 'Uncanny believers: chatbots, beliefs, and folk psychology’. > ABSTRACT. Recent developments in artificial intelligence research have revealed the power of large parameter language models like GPT-3 to generate believable and flexible responses to user prompts. These systems are not particularly intelligent in any demanding sense of the term. However, they can serve as believable if imperfect interlocutors in many contexts, and such systems are already seeing deployment as chatbots in a variety of roles ranging from customer service to entertainment and therapy. In this talk, I explore some issues arising from the human tendency to anthropomorphise such systems, with a specific focus on the attribution of beliefs. I argue that it is likely that people will (and indeed already are) attributing beliefs implicitly and explicitly to such systems, and that this is likely to have significant ramifications for both cognitive science and society at large. Such attributions, I go on to argue, lack much basis in contemporary theories of belief in cognitive science: even most of the more liberal accounts of belief would be unlikely to attribute humanlike beliefs to contemporary AI systems. I conclude with what I take to be an interesting dilemma for cognitive science and philosophy: to extent that the general public use psychological state terms more liberally than is supported by academic consensus, should it be our role to ‘re-educate’ the public, or should we instead be open to the idea that dominant models of belief and other mental states in academia no longer match ordinary usage of these terms?

Glad too you've said an emphatic "NO" to considering moving back into Canyon - I think it's probably a pretty contested or embattled place as a 'culture' also, with folks from NYC, and other countries too, invested in a harming vision there - which may go back any number of recent decades in its recent entanglements (legal, emotional, quid pro quo, etc.), and regarding the illegal sex industry too for example. Don't think I could bring a kind of even caring, or 'Christian' even (somehow Unitarian U? Nontheist Quaker? ???), ethic that would be transformative there for example, in the name of social justice and peace and protection of innocents and victims even. Am leaving that to the US federal government, working with the CA state government, BUT am sceptical they can even effect change there.
Glad the Portland area feels very safe too. It might be a good place to explore moving to possibly, as I explore next steps after leaving the basement I'm living in (which is cold, even in June!), but I'd like to continue to live out here in the SF Bay Area, perhaps moving into a new house in these parts ... and regarding both my actual-virtual, physical-digital earth & Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, and proximity to Harbin physically, as well as for MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch. (Unfortunately, I couldn't glance at the video since, as you'll read below, I used my scottmacleod100@hotmail.com address to sign up for MS Teams, but am using this sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org email for communications with all of you, and MS Teams didn't allow the MS hotmail address just now, and didn't recognize the worlduniversityandschool.org email address).
As I asked at the very close of the W June 2, 2021 presentations: "All, in what ways could one extend computer vision to 3D modeling for subsequent construction steps - and even with a #FilmTo3D App, brainstorming-wise (but not yet coded for)?
