Ball Point Pen Drawing

FRANK CHO - Shanna cover art - click to view

Well, I broke out my BIC ball point pens and started on my covers on the secret Marvel project that I’m writing and drawing.

Here’s a part of the cover that I’m currently working on. Drawing in ball point pens is time consuming but well worth the effort. When handled properly, ball point pens behave like pencils.

Art tip: When I do my ball point illustrations, I pencil in the figure and background, then lightly erase them. This leaves a faint pencil outline of the drawing which I use as a guide as I start cross hatching with my ball point pens.

I got back from San Diego Comic-Con several days ago but haven’t fully recovered, mentally and physically, from the experience. The whole trip was a mixed bag for me. Some things went very well (business meetings) and some things didn’t go as well (merchandise sales).

Needless to say, it was a very unpredictable and interesting show.

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con was the tipping point for me and apparently for many comic book professionals and fans. San Diego Comic-Con is no longer a comic convention. Movies, TV, and Toys dominated the show’s focus and floor space. Comics were literally pushed off the floor. Some of my comic book professional friends I see every year at this show didn’t come this year and more of my peers have told me that this is their last year at this show due to low sales and lack of attention by the attendees and show programming. I would like to disagree with my peers but I can’t. I agree with them whole heartedly, since I have felt the same and have witnessed the shift in show’s focus the last 8+ years.

It’s very frustrating to see various studios and actors on hand to promote their latest movies and TV shows. I would understand if these shows were comics-related or comics-friendly (Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc) but many weren’t. For example, Will Ferrell made an unannounced appearance to promote his election movie comedy and many TV networks were on hand to showcase their fall TV line-up. At this point, San Diego Comic-Con shouldn’t call itself “Comic-Con” since comics were nowhere to be seen.

Hell, even Marvel and DC Comics didn’t make any major comic book announcements since they knew their announcements would be drowned out by movie and TV announcements. Very sad.

Would I attend San Diego Comic-Con again? Yes, I would. As long as my friend and art dealer, Steve Morger, attends, I will attend. But I won’t debut any major books or projects at San Diego Comic-Con any more.

I’ll save those for Baltimore Comic-Con and other comic conventions whose focuses are still on comics.
