Ballpoint Pen Art Progress
[image error]

The first cover to my secret Marvel project is done!
Here’s the step-by-step progress of the ballpoint art on the cover. I used BIC ballpoint pens (medium point, black ink) on a Bristol board (Strathmore, vellum surface, 300 series). From start to finish, it took me about 5 days to complete this cover.
Now the final cover has been “editorially tweaked” and will not exactly look like this art but it turned out okay.
On to the next cover.

Women Book 2 Cover Prelim
FRANK CHO - Women 2 cover art prelim - click to view
Here’s the rough color study of my WOMEN Book 2 art collection book cover. I’ve been banging my head against the wall all day working on this. Watercolor has to be one of the hardest art mediums around, and something I never felt comfortable using.
I’m not really happy about how this is shaping up. I’ll do another couple color pass before I think, the piece will sort itself out. I’ll post the final image when it’s done.
WOMEN Book 2 is scheduled to come out in November in time for Christmas.

Ballpoint Pen Cover - Work in Progress
[image error]
FRANK CHO - Shanna cover art - click to view
Here’s another sneak peek at my secret Marvel project cover that I’m illustrating with ballpoint pens. (BIC fine point ballpoint pens.)
I love drawing with ballpoint pens. It can achieve various shades of tone and texture unlike any tools except the pencil. The downside is that it’s very time consuming and unforgiving if you make a stray mark. A normal pen and ink cover takes me about 2 days to draw. (Pencil one day and ink the next.) These ballpoint pen art takes about 4 - 7 days, depending on the levels of detail.
My plan is to do all the covers for my secret Marvel project using this ballpoint pen art technique, which will be fun and challenging.
