Awesome Art Weekend - May 18 -20!
FRANK CHO - Big Wow Comicfest 2012 ad
The great Big Wow Comic Fest in San Jose is just around the corner.
Again this year, I’ll be holding one of my very rare art classes where I’ll teach drawing the female figure- veeeery sexy female figures. (This is a felony in some southern states, I believe.) Again this year, the lovely and culo-rrific Ivy Doomkitty will model for me at the live figure drawing class. She’ll be dressed as Dejah Thoris and belly dance for us. (She’s a professional belly-dancer. I kid you not.)
The wonderful thing about Big Wow Comic Fest is that it focuses on the art of drawing and painting comic books. There will be various free art workshops at the convention for the fans, including a costume making workshop for cos-players and acrylic/oil painting classes for fine art lovers. The fans can just watch or draw along with the artists, or just get your comic books autographed - because Big Wow Comic Fest is still a comic book convention.
Don’t forget, This year’s stellar guest list includes the great Jim Lee, Juanjo “Black Sad” Guarnido, Bernie Wrightson, Travis Charest, Kevin Nowlan, Joe Jusko, Bill Morrison, Tim Sale, Brandon Peterson, James O’Barr, Michael Golden, Mike Choi, Tim Vigil and many many more.

If you can’t make it to San Jose Big Wow Comic Fest, there is another great and very unique art convention on that same weekend. My BFF, Arnie and Cathy Fenner are hosting their first annual SPECTRUM FANTASTIC ART LIVE! convention in Kansas City, Missouri. (Who knew there would be culture besides yogurt in Missouri?)
This show kicks all kinds of ass. The biggest and brightest artists and creators from the gaming, movie and book world will be there under one roof, demonstrating their amazing skills and techniques. Like Big Wow Comic Fest, there will be many art demonstrations and lectures at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live! show.
Their guest list is to die for - Mark Schultz, Greg Manchess, Mike Mignola, Boris, Phil Hale, Ian McCaig , Brom, etc.
Not to toot my own horn, Spectrum Fantastic Art Live! will be showing my short horror-comedy film, Doctor Rossum’s Prodigal Son, at their movie panel. (Okay, I’m tooting… Don’t stand behind me.)
If I wasn’t already committed to Big Wow Comic Fest in San Jose, I would be at Kansas City attending Spectrum Fantastic Art Live! show.

So mark your calender, May 18 - 20. Two great shows, one insane weekend.

Zombie King Lives! New Art
FRANK CHO - Zombie King art - click to enlarge
Zombie King was a horror comic that I wrote and drew about 6 years ago. (Yes, the cow-f@$%ing story.) I had the entire story written and published one issue (Issue #0) through Image Comics before real life got in the way.
Well during those 6 years when Zombie King lay dormant, lot of things happened. Zombies became one of the hottest entertainment topics, largely in part to the success of Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s Waking Dead comic book and TV show. My forgotten Zombie King story was revisited.
Enter David Jacobs, my buddy, who helped me make my first short horror film, “Doctor Rossum’s Prodigal Son”, which was my try-out for a directing gig. (This short horror will debut at the SPECTRUM FANTASTIC ART LIVE SHOW in Kansas City, Missouri on May 18 - 20 spectrumfantasticart.com/spectrumfantasticartlive
David spearheaded my Zombie King story beyond the comic book realm.
With his help, new business connections were made which opened doors to new possibilities. I can’t tell you more but if everything pans out, expect new life in my Zombie King story.
Yup. 2012 will be an interesting year for me. Watch for more news as things unfold.
Here are two new art from the revised Zombie King project.

Calgary Expo Sketches
FRANK CHO - Scarlet Witch convention sketch - click to enlarge
Despite the cold weather, Calgary Expo was amazing. Kandrix Foong, Jim Demonakos, and crew did another fantastic job with this year’s show.
The attendance was way, WAY up. It was packed all 3 days. Saturday was especially crowded. You needed lubricant to get into the building.
People were happy and excited to be at the show. And not only that, they were in a buying mood, too.
By Friday afternoon, I knew that I didn’t bring enough sketchbooks to sell. And sure enough, I was sold out of EVERYTHING by Sunday morning.
Knowing this, I decided to break my no convention sketch rule, and decided to do few convention sketches for the fans, instead of sitting at an empty table with nothing to do.
So here’s one of the quick pencil sketches that did for a lucky fan in Calgary.
Enjoy.
