This is a very rare trip to Ohio for me since I don’t travel to the Midwest often… because there’s nothing there but farmlands, corn and crystal-meth labs. (I kid. I kid. I love crystal-meth.) No. No.
Seriously, I’m happy to attend this comic convention and a chance to revisit my old friends at “Comics and Friends” comic shop. (I actually went in for comics and came out with friends. Well, “friends” is not quite the right word. More like acquaintances.) So if you’re in Ohio and not busy, come on over this Sunday to Lake Effect Comic Convention and hang out with me. (But don’t stand too close to me. I have personal space issues.)

I have a special treat for you freaks today. Instead of me telling you what a semi-awesome life I lead as a bad-ass in Maryland, I suckered my Big Wow art model, Ivy “Culo Girl” Doomkitty, to fill in for me today while I catch up on my semi-awesome naps.
Without further ado, here’s Ivy Doomkitty. Take it away Ivy.

Big Wow ComicFest…
All I can say is that if you haven’t been, then you really don’t know what you are missing. It’s the most intimate show you will ever attend. Frank and Ugo asked me to write a guest blog, since Frank likes to spend his weekends getting his creative juices flowing by studying ahem “reference”. So with no further ado, I present to you, my weekend with Frank Cho.
Saturday, I spent part of the day helping Frank sell his crap. The man has a crystal meth addiction for crying out loud! Buy his crap and help feed his addiction. We grabbed a quick bite and headed back to get ready for his live art panel. Bra? Check. Tiara? Check. Belt? Err… hold up. Apparently the back panels to my belt were not secured well enough so I needed to reinforce them. Costume malfunction crisis averted. Sorry guys, no peep show here…..unless you’re Frank…and you ask nicely ;-) It was pretty interesting having to weave my way through a crowded religious convention that was also going on, in my Dejah Thoris costume, on my way to Franks panel. The women weren’t too happy, to say the least. I arrived rather late due to said averted costume malfunction, and after a few minutes of setting up the projector, we were ready. Frank had me do two different poses, in which he gave pointers to those who were also drawing. It truly was an experience and an honor to be able to do this. After the panel, Frank yet again gifts me the two sketches that he did of me as Dejah Thoris. Holy Crap! What do you say to that? I was floored. Frank you kick some serious ass!
I was also being used as Dan Brereton’s’ model for his panel (which was back to back with Franks) so I really needed to haul to get ready. Dan had me also do a couple of poses as he instructed the audience. After his panel, he also gives me the piece he did of me. Seriously guys, In no way do I expect to receive the art. It is a privilege in itself to be able to model for you!
By now my legs are killing me and I am rushing to go change in one of the restrooms. Dave hands me my clothes to change into and takes all of my costuming back up to the room with him. Crap…. He didn’t bring my pants…and took my phone. Now I am stuck in a secluded bathroom with no pants and no way of telling him that I am stuck. I said, “Screw it”, and wandered the convention floor pantsless. No, not really! Dave, my husband, realized that the pants were still in the room when he went back up to leave my costume, so I was safe, yet again J
We headed out to grab dinner at PHO 69 with Frank and some of his friends. I was able meet the lovely Riki (Riddle) and discussed ethics, costuming, squirrels, and costuming for squirrels with ethics. If you get a chance to meet her in person, she really is one of the sweetest people you will meet.
On Sunday, I spent the majority of the day pimping Franks book and raffle tickets out, before heading to his panel. The audience decided pretty quickly on having Frank draw Black Widow fighting Venom on a rooftop. It’s amazing to see him turn out a cover quality piece in under two hours. By now he’s finished sketching and is ready to draw the winning ticket. I hand the tickets over to one of our friends, Mark, who picks the ticket and hands to Frank. He calls out the name Dave Turner. I nearly fell over from shock. It was my husbands winning ticket. Ha! Truly what are the odds of that? Needless to say, there were a few upset people in the audience thinking that it must have been fixed. I swear to you this raffle is strictly based on chance, so I must have the mother of all lucky clovers tucked away. I did however, ask Frank to pick another ticket instead of the first one drawn, which he refused. Damn it Frank! I’ll take the art…sheesh! ;-)
Frank was nice enough to also introduce me to Jim Lee (which was a treat unto itself). From here, we went out with Frank and his friends to a very lovely Sushi restaurant where I ordered Ebi. Frank sat directly across from me, and I think I may have grossed him out by eating those delectable fried shrimp heads in front of him. Sorry Frank. Afterward, we hung out at the bar for a bit. It was entertaining watching Joe Benitez and Buzz crack jokes about each other, until Buzz invited us back to his room to watch a movie. We ended up talking for a while before turning in.
Travis Charest’ wife’s family owns a winery and every year they invite creators, guests, and fans to their winery after the convention. So on Monday, we met everyone to head to the winery in the early afternoon and were given a tour of their winery. After sampling their wine, I settled on their best bottle, a Pinot Noir, to gift my parents for their 25th wedding anniversary this weekend. From there, I had a wonderful lunch, which was provided by our host, Travis Charest, his family, and Steve Morger. We discussed the mechanics of using Turkish toilets with the guest of honor, Juanjo Guarnido, while Riki shared her adventures with toilets in Japan. Interesting information to go over while you have a mouth full of pulled pork. We said our goodbyes to those that were leaving that day and headed back into town.
We met Frank, Buzz, Eric Basaldua, Bill Cox of CAF, and the lovely ladies, Jo, Sabine, and Clare for some delicious Thai for dinner, followed by going to the theatre for Battleship. Meh… I say straight to blu-ray… maybe be lucky enough to purchase from a $5 bin, if that.
On Tuesday morning, prior to heading on our five and a half hour drive back home, we met up with Frank for brunch and said our goodbyes. Unfortunately, I left without getting something that has become somewhat of a tradition for me: Franks’ sharpie gracing my boob. Frank, you owe me one; make that two, for San Diego Comic Con! Thank you Monkey Boy for bestowing me with the privilege of writing this blog entry. I had a blast meeting new people and making new friends. Frank, thank you so so much for being YOU and I can’t wait to do it all over again next year!

Big Wow Comic Fest Huge Success!

Big Wow Comic Fest was a smashing success! And I want to thank all my friends and fans for making it a huge success. I especially want to thank the great Jim Lee for taking time off his busy schedule to sign and sketch for fans all afternoon.
The show floor and the panel rooms were packed all two days. My live model drawing class with Ivy was full with eager and happy artists and fans. I even had time to check out Joe Jusko paint a beautiful Vampirella with acrylic on stage. Simply awesome. And the costume contest was stunning. Some of the best costumes I’ve seen all year. It was all around a great show.
I’m still trying to recover from the show and words fail me for how much fun I had at the show. So, here are various photos from Big Wow Comic Fest.
