Friday Funnies: Things are Changing!

Hello My Happy People,

I am dragging a bit today. I was up until about 4 AM working on the new Book Banter Magazine. This FlipBook program is so cool! I was figuring out how to do all of these incredible animations, active links, video trailers, and more. It has just been so fun I didn't want to stop working on it. I forgot how much I love working on publications like this.

However, I realized today, if I am going to make this a monthly magazine, I need to free up more time in my schedule or I will not be able to keep up with the important projects I have going on that might actually end up generating some income one day.

So I have decided it is time to change up these blogs again. Going forward starting next week, I will only be posting a blog on Wednesdays with the new Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt - Book Talk Podcast. I will still do a vlog on Mondays on TikTok, I will just not blog about it here on Monday and we will not be doing Friday Funnies anymore. I just do not have the time.

I will post the vlog and a few jokes in the Wednesday blog, but this will cut down on all the time I have to spend writing the blogs, posting them across the social media, and just the general behind the scenes maintenance of creating all the SEO, hashtags, etc. for each blog. It can actually take a while to create these things.

It has been fun while it lasted, but the magazine is going to be way cooler! I can't wait to share it will all of you.

Just a heads up. The magazine will be free October to December 2023. Staring January 1st we will start asking for the cover price of $3.99 per issue. I need to see if there is a way to set a yearly subscription for a discounted price. I have not checked into the monetization too much yet. I will let you know before Christmas.

Speaking of Christmas, I will be putting together a Christmas Book Buying Guide with every author who has been on Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt - Book Talk Podcast since season 1 (since we didn't do this last year) and it will include buy links to their books with a link to their podcast episode as well. See why I need to free up some time in my calendar? Going forward the year end buying guide will just be authors from that season.

Today I get to chat with the incredible, Meliza Farndell. Since we recorded this interview, I have already joined Meliza for a live chat on her channel. It has been proven that when we start talking about books, it is hard for us to stop.

Meliza is a wife and mother currently living in Preston, UK. When she is not focused on her family, you can find her developing new courses, coaching others, and of course writing books. She strives to help others to walk in freedom; "in their true identity and purpose".Meliza was the is the daughter of a pastor, born and raised in beautiful South Africa. She felt loved and cared for by her family, life did not always follow a smooth and anticipated path. Meliza is quoted as stating, "Enter: an enemy that comes to kill, steal and destroy."In this episode, we talk about Meliza's trials and tribulations in life which left her feeling empty and developing self-destructive habits. Her circumstances caused her to questions her relationship with her religious beliefs. She felt abandoned by God who she had turned to for help and answers. A trip to the movies ended up turning her life around. Meliza found inspiration in the movie Tangled. Through this movie Meliza felt she had finally been heard, that God had seen her suffering, and He deeply cared about her struggles. This revelation gave her the strength to pick up her life, pull herself out of her despair and begin building a future as an author and coach to help others find the strength to follow their own dreams.

Manic Monday Vlog: The Horror!

Hello My Happy People,

I hope you had a great weekend. Mine was the things nightmares are made of for any author. I made all of my edits from editor and my mom, who is a beta reader for me, and then listened to a program read me the entire book and made more corrections ... too many corrections. I knew there had to be an issue somewhere, because there was no way my professional editor and my mother both missed so many typos. Watch the video to find out what happened.

FYI, the book is all corrected now and uploaded for publication September 19th, 2023. I do not know why I cannot select to put the paperback and hardcover on presale too, but I will open them up on the 19th as well if you are waiting for hard copies of the book.

Friday Funnies: A Helping Hand!

Hello My Happy People,

First and foremost, I want to thank all of you who actually follow me, read my blogs/vlogs, listen to the occasional podcast, and best of all, buy and read my books! I could not do any of this without you! Well ... I could, but there wouldn't be much of a point to it. You are the most important part of my writing career. Without followers/readers, I have no career. I would just be a person who likes to write for themselves, not an author.

I am not a person who is good at asking for help. I am really bad at it. I would rather kill myself doing everything on my own than put myself out there to ask for help. Most people think it is because I am a control freak, but the truth is ... it's not that. I don't ask for help because I have a deep and crippling fear that no one would want to help me. So instead I drive myself insane trying to do everything on my own. Unfortunately, when it comes to my books, going it alone is obviously not working.

I need help. I need people who will share my posts. I need ARC readers. I need people who will leave reviews. I need people who will buy my books and give them a try. I need an author critique group to help bounce ideas around. I need a better plan!

I am open to suggestions from anyone who has had better success than I am currently having. I am determined to figure this all out and make this a viable career, but it is obvious that I need to find a different path to reach my goals. As God is my witness, I will find it!

I think now is a perfect time for some jokes!

Hello My Happy People,

I hope your week is starting off great. Mine definitely is. We are finally in my birthday month and I am working ahead so I can take the week off of everything for my birthday, except working on the new magazine ... of course. The premier issue is due to drop October 1st so I have a lot to do between now and then.

I have edits to finish up tonight on Into the West: Family Ties so I can spend the rest of the week working on the podcast and the premier issue of our magazine. I was having trouble finding time to write books when I was just doing the podcast, I'm not sure what I was thinking when I decided to try writing two books, doing the podcast, and developing a new magazine all by myself. I must just hate sleep.

Though if my energy level from today keeps up, I should be good. Check out today's vlog and see what I am talking about!

Hello My Happy People,

I hope your week ended much better than mine did. We are still have issues with electronics in our home and it seems like we are making some progress ... but more needs to be made!

I had a wonderful conversation with mystery author J.C. Fuller, at least what I remember was wonderful. My poor sleep deprived brain is starting to refuse to function without proper care. So I will be making this short today to go rest and try to get back to "my normal" functioning level. Have a fantastic weekend poeple!

Hello My Happy People,

If things seem a bit off today ... I'm just a bit frazzles. I had major technical difficulties yesterday and was worried I would not even be able to broadcast today's episode. The fact that you get to listen to this interview today, as scheduled, is a miracle in itself. I'm convinced we have an electromagnetic field anomaly in our apartment. Either that or the machine uprising has begun, because my computer equipment is definitely revolting on me.

At least things are working at the moment (knock on wood!!!) So let's get on with it!

Today I am joined by Carole T. Beers, western author of "New West Mysteries with Heart" ... and humor. Carole was born in Portland, Ore., to descendants of Oregon Trail pioneers. She fell in love with writing at an early age and with horses as soon as she could ride. She wrote her first story when she was only seven, complete with illustrations. She was first published in The Grants Pass (Oregon) Daily Courier in 1963 with her “Letters from London”.

She went on to earn her B.A. in Journalism from the University of Washington. She taught writing at a private school and began writing for romance and horse magazines. She worked as a journalist for 32 years and was a dance critic for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Seattle Times newspaper.

During her journalistic career, Carole wrote 7,000 stories for the Seattle Times, several of which were award winners. Over the span of her career, she interviewed celebrities including: Katharine Hepburn, John Wayne, B.B. King, Rudolph Nureyev, and even HRH Queen Elizabeth. Carole has many interests outside of journalism. She competed on a women’s shooting team, earning a Sharpshooter rating. She has also flown planes, designed clothing, and tried her hand at PR.

​Carole is currently writing the Granny Oakley Mysteries featuring a modern, 80-year old descendant of Annie Oakley who tries her hand at trick-shooting to help her daughter save her guest ranch. The Granny Oakley Mysteries are described as a "zippy yet warm cozy is a spinoff of my Pepper Kane Mysteries".

Tuesday Extra: Why I Shared My Surrender!

Hello My Happy People,

I noticed today there were a few typos and stutters in my blog yesterday (I fixed them), but it was just a symptom of my frustration level yesterday. With my neurological conditions, strong emotions can basically short circuit my brain for a while. I have no idea how yesterday's blog/vlog came off to each of you who took the time to read it and watch the video, but I wanted to explain why I shared my frustration.

I was not looking for sympathy or pity book sales (though I would not refuse those, I take what I can get and am thankful for them all) but I know I am not the only author out here who feels this way. I wanted to share to commiserate with my fellow authors who find themselves going through the same frustrations. It can be daunting at times being a fairly unknown author. I do not plan to give up and I hope sharing my frustrations and struggles helps other to not feel so alone in this and gives them the courage to keep trying too.

When I was younger, I always stuffed my feelings down and tried to always put on a brave face no matter how I felt. I never asked for help, I was the strong one, I could not only take care of me, but everyone around me too ... and that took a huge toll on me emotionally.

I have since learned how to let myself feel my feelings: frustrated, depressed, angry, happy, hopeful, sad, and everything else on the spectrum. The trick was not getting locked into any of them and letting them take over my life. It was a hard lesson for me to learn, but I have been so much happier since I started allowing myself to feel all of my emotions. I used to only allow myself to feel pleasant ones and would stuff down the unpleasant ones. Thoat doesn't work for long.

So yesterday, I let myself feel frustrated. I tried to look at exactly what it was that was frustrating me. I came up with a list.

I don't know:

1. where to find ARC readers to build a team for my books

The team would start out with this first historical fiction serial, but I hope they would want to carry over and read my other books coming out (autobiography and FBI profiler thriller) and well as preview the magazines as they are ready to publish online.

2. where to I target my marketing to better reach the clean reads, historical fiction market

3. where can I do book signings and marketing here in Germany to reach the local English book reading market

4. how to set things up now so there is not such a struggle with the new books coming next year?

5. how to do everything that needs to be done by myself since I have no budget to hire anyone and still have time to write my own books, spend time with my husband, keep up with housework, and sleep occasionally (okay so this last in is just me being a bit b*tchy, but it was part of my frustration yesterday so I left it. )

So there you have it. I know there are more than a few people who can identify with these things and often feel frustrated with their own careers from time to time. That is perfectly okay. Humans get frustrated. That is when you take a step back, reevaluate, and prepare for the next attempt to reach your goals. It may take several rounds of reevaluating and changing up your marketing plans before you find what works well for you. It can suck, but it's worth the effort and each step will get you closer to your goals and give you more information to build on. By the time your reach your goals, you will have a very solid foundation of information to stand on.

So if you are feeling frustrated today, go ahead and feel it. It's a normal human emotion. Just don't stay there. Figure out what is frustrating you, make a plan, and try again. And maybe have a cookie for not giving up on yourself!

Hello My Happy People,

As you might guess from today's title, I am surrendering to the truth. A freely admit I have no idea what I am doing wrong with my marketing outreach for ... well everything Burckhardt Books. I am not even getting near the engagement I have been trying to get. I can't even find it on a map from where I am right now.

I am just experiencing a lot of anxiety and frustration at the moment. I will just keep trudging through the muck and hope something works by the end of the year. We will see. Check out the video for more information.
