Book Banter EP 77: Francesca Maria

Hello My Happy People,

Oh my goodness! I am rushing like mad right now. I was just boppin' along finishing up my edits on the podcast and getting ready to broadcast everything, when I realized I had not created any of the promo images for Francesca's episode. I do not know how I missed that. Usually I do a bulk creation day and do several authors at once, but I am still trying to find some good images for one author and I think that is why I just forgot to create them.

Luckily, I have templates saved for all the images I typically need so I just had to drag and drop the new images for Francesca's episode into the base images. So here we are!

If you love horror, comic books, audiobooks, or anthologies with several engaging short stories ... I have your new favorite author! Francesca and I had such a great conversation and we even identified with each other over a few childhood memories. So check out her bio below and then go listen to her episode. From her website:

Francesca Maria has been penning horror stories since she was able to pick up a pen and write at the age of six. This fascination with horror was spurred by her insatiable quest to uncover what was haunting her house as a child. Now in her late forties, Francesca is still haunted by her childhood home which continues to invade her dreams.

Francesca has spent 19 years as the co-owner of Black Cat Comics in Northern California and has been reading comics for over two decades. She is an avid fan of Neil Gaiman, Tom King, Stephen King, Tom Taylor, Geoff Johns and Jeph Loeb. When she's not reading and writing horror, Francesca visits haunted places and records their histories.

Francesca is a former journalist, a published author and a graduate from University of California at Berkeley.

Francesca is also a psychic medium and detective and uses her knowledge of the other world to aid in her storytelling. She has a black belt in Taekwondo, drives a '53 Chevy truck and drums until her hands bleed.

You can find her work in Crystal Lake's Flash Fiction monthly contests, the upcoming Death's Garden Revisited anthology, Black Cat Chronicles and her debut release of her short story collection: THEY HIDE: SHORT STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK, is out now!

Hello My Happy People,

Today is the perfect day to talk about getting older as it is my mother's (D.S. Stephens') birthday! If you would like to join the celebration, just go to our ,Burckhardt Book Facebook page (

Unfortunately, we were not able to make it back to the US to be with her today, but my sister and some of her family were able to make the trip to Kansas to help Mom celebrate. We hope to make up for lost time when we go visit at the holidays.

A quick update on our current Burckhardt Books projects:

Edits are slowly progressing on Into the West; Family Ties but still progressing. Outlines are being developed for The Touch and Free Bad Haircuts with Each Craniotomy The new podcast companion magazine Book Banter Magazine is coming along nicely and the layouts are starting to come together. We are setting up the plan for a holiday book buying guide magazine special issue featuring books from all the guest authors from season one and two of Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt. More great guests are scheduled for August: two comic book authors and an incredible author who almost defies categorization.

I know I am forgetting something, but as I cannot remember what I forgot, let's just go with these.

​In today's episode, I get to chat with an old friend, Kammy Wood. For as long as I can remember, Kammy has been an avid reader and lover of words so it made perfect sense to learn Kammy started her own business working with words and writers. Bio Provided by Kammy Wood:The first hints of Kammy’s love of words appeared at age two, when she “read” books aloud, including classics like Caps For Sale. She readily retold the stories by looking at the pictures, and astounded unknowing adults with her interpretations of selections from the Captain Kangaroo catalog.By age nine, her editorial inclinations emerged — she “rewrote” TV show plots on the fly, and pointed out typos in advertising copy to family and friends. She was gifted a typewriter as a teen. Then a word processor. Then another. Then a computer. You get the point. She wrote a lot, and for her own entertainment.​She earned a BA in English from Emporia State University in 1999, and went to work at her local Barnes and Noble soon after, which led to a 17-year career. In 2010, while still at B&N, she started her freelance editing and proofreading business, helping authors and business clients with hundreds of projects over the course of 10-plus years.​In 2023, she launched The Modern Wordist, expanding her services to include creative writing coaching and consulting, ghostwriting, and co-writing as a way to help even more people create great books and content.

Friday Funnies: Post Migraine Edition!

Hello My Happy People,

As I am sure you can guess from the title of today's blog, I am just now coming off of a three day migraine. I really hate when those hit. As you may know, one of the neurological conditions I have is hydrocephalus. This causes higher than normal pressure in my head. When a low pressure weather front comes through like we just had here in Düsseldorf, it is actually very painful for me. The lower the barometric pressure drops, the more painful it is.

We still have storms in our area and the pressure is still lower than normal, but it has let up enough that I am able to function today. Yesterday was 100% a no go! My husband says he can always gauge how much pain I am in by how much of my eyes he can see when I am talking to him. If I actually close my eyes a bit while we are talking, he just sends me to bed.

So today I am playing catch up on the work I was not able to keep up with the last three days, like this blog. I have got more great author interview coming up in August starting off with comic book author Chris Denmead. The following week we have the incredible writer, creator, and executive producer, Reenita Malhotra Hora. Then we have another comic book author Francesca Maria. I have been actively seeking comic book authors since I started this podcast (because I am a HUGE comic book fan) and now I actually have two coming up. I am also just pinching myself that I get to chat with Reenita M. Hora. When you hear her interview, you will understand why!

Things are coming along great for the new magazine, Book Banter Magazine. I am also planning to put out a holiday buying guide for Christmas, featuring work from our guest authors.

But for now I have laundry to finish, a book to edit (Part 7 - Into the West: Family Ties) and two to read so let's get to the jokes!

I never imagined it would catch on like this and I would be interviewing award-winning, bestselling authors every week. It is amazing!

Friday Funnies: Fun Times!

Hello My Happy People,

The traveling carnival is back in town with rides and games and lots of amazing food you only ever eat at carnivals. It is tradition for me and P.R. to go to the arcade game where you shoot arrows at targets. Every year we do a little bit better and keep getting a bigger prize, We will have to see what we come back with this year.

This blog is coming out late because I have spent most of the day working on a mockup of our new magazine, Book Banter Magazine. I have to say, I have had a lot of fun working on this and am getting really excited to bring this to all of you. We are still planning for a fall launch so keep watching our social media for the actual launch date.

But for now, let's get on with the jokes ...

Q: Did your wife get mad when you accidentally handed her a glue stick instead of chapstick?

A: I don't know, but she still isn’t talking to me.

Q: How is that book you're reading a book about anti-gravity?

A: Great, it’s impossible to put down.

Q: I heard you were scheduled to get a brain transplant, what happened?

A: I was but then I changed my mind.

Q: Did you hear my dad gave me a pair of gloves, but they’re both lefts?

A: Well, on one hand, it's great, but on the other, it's not right.

Q: What happened when your husband found out you replaced your bed with a trampoline? A: He really hit the roof.

Q. Did it hurt when you got hit with that can of soda?

A: Not really, it was a soft drink.

Q: Where you shocked to be diagnosed with colorblindness?

A: Yes, it came completely out of the dark grey.

Q: I heard your boss plans to fire the employee with the worst posture, is that true?

A: Yes, and I have a hunch, it might be me.

Q: Is it true you were addicted to the hokey pokey?

A: Yes, but thankfully, I turned myself around.

Hello My Happy People,

I am joined today by USA Today Bestselling author, ​Ann Charles. Ann currently lives in the Arizona mountains with her family and a sassy cat. After a roundabout route which was never in the plans, Ann earned her Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Washington with an emphasis on creative writing.

​Ann has written numerous award-winning, contemporary books in several different series. Ann describes her work as character-driven stories full of quirky characters. Her books are mixed-genre mysteries filled with comedy, a few uproars, a dash of spice, and plenty of mystery to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Ann is a member of Sisters in Crime and the Western Writers of America. When she is not working on her next book, she is busy writing about the art and business of writing. She enjoys doing her part to share what she has learned over the years to help those just starting out in the business of being a professional author. She shares a lot of her knowledge with me in today's episode between laughs and shared experiences in our author journeys.
