Book Banter Celebrates Our 100th Episode with Special Guest P.R. Burckhardt!

Hello My Happy People,

Normally we would be sharing the "Best Of" episodes all through January while we gear up for the next season, but our 100th show just happened to hit during the break so we had to come back for a special, brand new episode.

Today I am joined by the man who has been kept in the shadows until just recently, I am referring to my better half, P.R. Burckhardt. When I started out writing as Stephen Burckhardt, I struggled with how to chat about my life at home without giving away that I was in fact a woman writing under a male pen name. I didn't want to just lie outright and refer to my husband as my wife and change Pedro's name to Peggy or something similar. So to get around that, I didn't use identifying pronouns, I referred to him as my spouse or most often, as my better half. When I did need to use something more specific I would just use his initials. P.R. was often mentioned in my old blogs.

Now that I have come out as the person behind Stephen Burckhardt's books, it has been so much easier to talk about family life, however Pedro was still not wanting to be mentioned too much in the beginning because of his work. But now that he is becoming more involved with Burckhardt Books, he is coming out into the lime light with me as the Producer for Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt - Book Talk Podcast and Book Banter Magazine.

Pedro's Professional Bio:

Pedro is a dynamic manager specializing in Supply Chain Management Consulting with more than 27 years of overall IT experience since 1997. He has a wide international consulting expertise in EMEA, APAC, and LATAM. He is an expert in Supply Chain models such as Lean Manufacturing and Just-in-time. He also has experience in Domestic and International Supply Chains including Multimodal supply as well as on-premise and cloud deployments. He has focused his career on worldwide IT service companies, leading teams with Consultants and customers to assess requirements and develop specific strategies. He specializes in continuous improvement methods that add value to the Customer Business Processes. With excellent relationship-building and communication skills with clients, vendors, and team members, Pedro has proven to be a leader who excels at project management in large and medium-sized projects.

Time for New Year's Dad Jokes!

Q: Do you sing in the shower?

A: I used to, but when I get soap in my mouth it becomes a soap opera.

A: They're both Paris-sites.

Q: What do you call a fish wearing a bowtie?

A: So-fish-ticated.

Q: Did the dryer shrink your clothes?

A: I thought so, but turns out it was the refrigerator.

Q: How does dry skin affect you at work?

A: I don’t have any elbow grease to put into it.

Q: Did you get carded at a liquor store?

A: Well, he started to ask for it, then my Blockbuster card fell out of my wallet and the cashier said, never mind.

Q: What do you call someone who has no body and no nose?

A: Nobody knows.

Q: Did you hear the rumor about butter?

A: Yes, but I refuse to spread it!

Q: What did the hat say to the scarf?

A: You can hang around here if you want, but I'm going on ahead.

And last but not least . . .

Q: Why couldn't the bicycle stand up on its own?

A: It was two tired.

Hello My Happy People!

Have I got a show for you today. In today's episode, I get to share my chat again with my good friend, Lance Steen Anthony Nielsen. I always look forward to chatting with Lance for several reasons.

Besides the fact that Lance is multi-talented, working as an author, a playwright, an acting coach, and a director, Lance really knows how to make me laugh. We bonded over brain damage and memory loss and it tends to be a running joke with us.

A bit about Lance, he was born in South Africa and adopted at a young age by an English mother and Danish father. Raised in Kingston-upon-Thames in the United Kingdom, it was here, according to his website, "... he spent much of his time engaged in designing fictional worlds for role-playing games, rolling dice, renting videos, going to the cinema and forgetting to tell his mother what time he would be home when he went out. While under the influence of many pints JRR Tolkien, he made his first attempts at writing a book series, The Prophecy of the Witch-King."

Since then, Lance has written many amazing works for stage, screen, and print. He chats about them all with Dianne in episodes 56 & 57, rebroadcast today in one episode. We had so much fun and talked forever. I had to cut out so much just to fit our interview into two shows originally. I am thrilled I have the chance to share this extended version of his interviews on our holiday break.

Q: Did you hear that laughing too loudly is illegal in Hawaii?

A: It's true, they only permit a-low-ha.

Q: Why do you hate your job?

A: All I do is crush cans all day. It’s soda pressing!

Q: Why can you only recite 25 letters of the alphabet?

A: I don't know y!

Q: Why does mom keep taking all your candy?

A: I don't know but she obviously doesn't know I always keep a few Twix up my sleeve!

Q: Did you find a wooden shoe in your toilet?

A: Yes, it was clogged.

Q: Why is your dream job is to clean mirrors?

A: I don't know, but I can really see myself doing that.

Q: What is it called when a pig loses its voice?

A: He becomes disgruntled!

Q: Why don't you trust stairs?

A: They're always up to something!

Q: What is it called when you get a bad sausage?

A: I don't know but it's just the wurst!

Q: Why do you think your dog is a genius?

A: Because I asked him, "What's two minus two?" He said nothing.

And last but not least ...

Q: Is it okay that I love telling "dad" jokes, but I don't have kids?

A: No, that is a huge Faux Pa!

I am so thrilled to bring you this interview today. Chatting with Gail Merrifield Papp about her book, Public/Private: My Life with Joe Papp at The Public Theater was just such an amazing pleasure. I have to say, I think her book was the most surprising that I have read this season, and in the most wonderful way.

There is absolutely no way I would be able to sum up Gail in a few paragraphs on this page, so I'm are not even going to attempt it. From the Press Release: Blending the ultimate insider’s account of the creation and first decades of New York City’s Public Theater with the star-studded story of life working alongside her husband, The Public's founder Joe Papp, Public/Private: My Life with Joe Papp at the Public Theater is theater director of new works Gail Merrifield Papp’s enthralling memoir of their rich partnership and of the legendary theatrical institution. Opening in the early Sixties, Merrifield Papp’s narrative spans the twenty-six years she and Joe worked, then lived together until Joe's death in 1991. During most of that time, Gail was Developer of New Plays and Musicals at The Public while it staged hundreds of productions, ranging from free Shakespeare in Central Park to new plays, such as Ntozake Shange's for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, and musicals like Hair and A Chorus Line. After joining Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival in 1965, she became Director of New Works Development for The Public Theater and was responsible for identifying up and coming playwrights and composers. Gail’s work curated some of its best-remembered productions in Public Theater history. These include The Normal Heart, Larry Kramer’s Tony Award-winning play about the AIDS crisis, for which she received the Human Rights Campaign Arts and Communication Award, and Rupert Holmes’s Tony Award-winning Best Musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Gail Merrifield and Joseph Papp were married in 1976. Producer-Director JOSEPH PAPP (1921–1991) is the founder of the New York Shakespeare Festival, which since 1956 has produced free Shakespeare in New York City. In 1965 he steered the New York City’s acquisition of the Astor Library landmark building where he created The Public Theater dedicated to new American work, opening in 1967 with the original production of Hair. Papp produced over six hundred plays and musicals which, by 1991, had won more than 200 stage, film, and television awards. Called “the most important force in the English-speaking theater” in the twentieth century, he was also an outspoken champion of human rights and the First Amendment who, in the words of the Congressional Record, “struggled to make New York City and our country a more livable place, to uplift our spirits, to challenge our minds, and see us through to another day.”

Book Banter EP 96: Mary Carroll Moore Interview

Hello My Happy People,

Sorry things are getting out a little later than usual today. I overslept and just had a hard time getting focused. I'm still battling some horrible jetlag after getting home from the USA. Plus, My wonderful husband got me a new computer and he set it up for me, but for some reason it is moving slower than a sloth after a heavy meal!

This cpomputer is really testing my ability to not take a hammer to the screen. We think there is just a lot of junk we moved over from the old computer that can be deleted that is slowing things down, but it will take time to go through all the files. In the meantime, I'm sitting here, sometimes up to five minutes, waiting for a browser window to open ... I started timing them to see if I was just being unreasonably impatient.

We finally got everything edited and ready to go and bring you our interview with the amazing Mary Carroll Moore. We had such a lovely conversation and this episode ran a bit longer than I had planned, but she is just so facinating and has such a great wealth of knowledge for other authors out there and great books suggestions for readers, that I decided to just let it go long.

Mary has always been a creative person and originally chose to express that side of herself through painting and did not turn to writing until later in life. It wasn't after turning 50 that she decided to returned to college to complete a MFA in Fiction.As with many writers, Mary began writing what she knew, creating characters who were foodies and artists, two things she is personally passionate about. She wrote three novels, including Qualities of Light, a YA queer novel. This title earned her a nomination for PEN/Faulkner and Lambda Literary awards. Since shifting to creative writing, Mary has penned around two hundred articles, essays, and short stories which have been published in literary journals and magazines. As her experience with writing grew, Mary began to consider a longer form and looked into the process to create a full-length novel. Armed with new knowlegdge, Mary began teaching online writing workshops for the Loft Literary Center, Grub Street, Madeline Island School of the Arts, as well as for other venues. This teaching experience gave birth to her book on the craft of writing, Your Book Starts Here, which earned her the New Hampshire Literary “Reader’s Choice” award in 2011. To further her educational reach, Mary started a weekly newsletter that has brought her followers from around the globe and also earned awards for her work. In her newsletter, she shares tips on how to structure a book, writing ideas, and author interviews. She also started a YouTube channel which has earned more than 200,000 views for her video tutorials. When not writing, Mary loves to travel and continues to paint. She lives with her husband and their two long-haird miniature dachshunds.

Book Banter EP 95: Brain Kaufman Interview

Hello My Happy People,

Today Dianne shares her chat with Brian Kaufman. Brian is a writer who deftly manages to straddle two writing realms, academia and fiction. By day you can find Brian working diligently as a curriculum editor for an online junior college. But like a comic book superhero, his night time endeavors lead him into a more fanciful world of fictional adventures that span a plethora of genres and time periods.

Brian's body of work includes but is not limited to eight novels that include a Civil War era historical fiction, a Steampunk inspired paranormal romance, an alien abduction adventure, and more. This does not even include his poetry, short stories, numerous novellas, and three textbooks. It is palusible to say that writing is his life.Due to the fact that writing and his family take up so much of his daily life, he has had to let go of a few other dreams, but holds fast to the idea that in other realms he has found the time to pursue being a pro-wrestler, a radio talk show host, and a heavy metal guitarist. Brian currently lives in the Colorado mountains with his wife and dog. Brian is happy to answer questions and can be reached through his website link below.

Book Banter EP 94: Faith Kramer Interview

Hello My Happy People,

I am thrilled to share my conversation with cookbook author, Faith Kramer. Faith is so much more than a global thinker, going beyond her own local traditions and cultural foods to bring her followers a taste of globally inspired Shabbat recipes. Faith is a long time food writer and recipe developer who focuses on the various customs and histories around Jewish cuisine.

Beyond recipe development, Faith also writes about her travels and the different ingredients used in Jewish communities worldwide. You can find her work published in different online publications including j., the Jewish News of Northern California, where she writes about food, cooking, and shares original recipes.

Faith has also shared her knowledge of global Jewish food traditions in cooking classes where she taught students about Jewish customs, celebrations, and holidays, and even led food-related walking tours. During these classes and tours she would teach her students about the impact of the economic, geographic, and political influences on regional food and traditions.

For those who cannot attend her classes, she has created her new cookbook, 52 Shabbats: Friday Night Dinners Inspired by a Global Jewish Kitchen where she shares her knowledge of the global community of Jewish culinary traditions, histories, and some amazing recipes.
