Book Banter Season 2 FINALE - EP 97: Gail Merrifield Papp Interview

Hello My Happy People,
I am so thrilled to bring you this interview today. Chatting with Gail Merrifield Papp about her book, Public/Private: My Life with Joe Papp at The Public Theater was just such an amazing pleasure. I have to say, I think her book was the most surprising that I have read this season, and in the most wonderful way.
There is absolutely no way I would be able to sum up Gail in a few paragraphs on this page, so I'm are not even going to attempt it. Instead I'm going to share the text provided in a press release from Applause Theater & Cinema Books. Be sure to click the purple microphone below to listen to today's incredible interview.
From the Press Release: Blending the ultimate insider’s account of the creation and first decades of New York City’s Public Theater with the star-studded story of life working alongside her husband, The Public's founder Joe Papp, Public/Private: My Life with Joe Papp at the Public Theater is theater director of new works Gail Merrifield Papp’s enthralling memoir of their rich partnership and of the legendary theatrical institution. Opening in the early Sixties, Merrifield Papp’s narrative spans the twenty-six years she and Joe worked, then lived together until Joe's death in 1991. During most of that time, Gail was Developer of New Plays and Musicals at The Public while it staged hundreds of productions, ranging from free Shakespeare in Central Park to new plays, such as Ntozake Shange's for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, and musicals like Hair and A Chorus Line. Gail and Joe’s production genius was responsible for an extraordinary body of work that launched the careers of dozens of actors, including James Earl Jones, Colleen Dewhurst, Gloria Foster, Morgan Freeman, Raúl Juliá, Kevin Kline, George C. Scott, Martin Sheen, Meryl Streep, and Diane Venora, all of whom make an appearance in the book. Gail Papp paints a comprehensive picture of the ways that The Public was driven by Joe's ambition to create a democratic theater whose artists and audiences would reflect the city's population. Also highlighted are unfamiliar aspects of his many battles with the establishment, from tilts with Robert Moses to theater critics. She remembers the scourge of AIDS, its impact on the many friends, family and colleagues close to Joe and Gail, and the toll it exacted on Joe's son, Tony. In recounting setbacks and frustrations alongside moments of passionate artistry and theatrical innovation, Gail's personal remembrances lend the narrative a keen, emotional edge which will captivate readers. At a time when America remains divided over issues of equality, identity, and freedom of expression, Public/Private is an important chronicle of how The Public Theater became a transformative beacon for social change and of the couple who created it.About the Author:GAIL MERRIFIELD PAPP was born in San Francisco into a family with a deep theater lineage. After joining Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival in 1965, she became Director of New Works Development for The Public Theater and was responsible for identifying up and coming playwrights and composers. Gail’s work curated some of its best-remembered productions in Public Theater history. These include The Normal Heart, Larry Kramer’s Tony Award-winning play about the AIDS crisis, for which she received the Human Rights Campaign Arts and Communication Award, and Rupert Holmes’s Tony Award-winning Best Musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Gail Merrifield and Joseph Papp were married in 1976. Producer-Director JOSEPH PAPP (1921–1991) is the founder of the New York Shakespeare Festival, which since 1956 has produced free Shakespeare in New York City. In 1965 he steered the New York City’s acquisition of the Astor Library landmark building where he created The Public Theater dedicated to new American work, opening in 1967 with the original production of Hair. Papp produced over six hundred plays and musicals which, by 1991, had won more than 200 stage, film, and television awards. Called “the most important force in the English-speaking theater” in the twentieth century, he was also an outspoken champion of human rights and the First Amendment who, in the words of the Congressional Record, “struggled to make New York City and our country a more livable place, to uplift our spirits, to challenge our minds, and see us through to another day.”

Book Banter EP 96: Mary Carroll Moore Interview

Hello My Happy People,
Sorry things are getting out a little later than usual today. I overslept and just had a hard time getting focused. I'm still battling some horrible jetlag after getting home from the USA. Plus, My wonderful husband got me a new computer and he set it up for me, but for some reason it is moving slower than a sloth after a heavy meal!
This cpomputer is really testing my ability to not take a hammer to the screen. We think there is just a lot of junk we moved over from the old computer that can be deleted that is slowing things down, but it will take time to go through all the files. In the meantime, I'm sitting here, sometimes up to five minutes, waiting for a browser window to open ... I started timing them to see if I was just being unreasonably impatient.
We finally got everything edited and ready to go and bring you our interview with the amazing Mary Carroll Moore. We had such a lovely conversation and this episode ran a bit longer than I had planned, but she is just so facinating and has such a great wealth of knowledge for other authors out there and great books suggestions for readers, that I decided to just let it go long.
Mary has always been a creative person and originally chose to express that side of herself through painting and did not turn to writing until later in life. It wasn't after turning 50 that she decided to returned to college to complete a MFA in Fiction. As with many writers, Mary began writing what she knew, creating characters who were foodies and artists, two things she is personally passionate about. She wrote three novels, including Qualities of Light, a YA queer novel. This title earned her a nomination for PEN/Faulkner and Lambda Literary awards. Since shifting to creative writing, Mary has penned around two hundred articles, essays, and short stories which have been published in literary journals and magazines. As her experience with writing grew, Mary began to consider a longer form and looked into the process to create a full-length novel. Armed with new knowlegdge, Mary began teaching online writing workshops for the Loft Literary Center, Grub Street, Madeline Island School of the Arts, as well as for other venues. This teaching experience gave birth to her book on the craft of writing, Your Book Starts Here, which earned her the New Hampshire Literary “Reader’s Choice” award in 2011. To further her educational reach, Mary started a weekly newsletter that has brought her followers from around the globe and also earned awards for her work. In her newsletter, she shares tips on how to structure a book, writing ideas, and author interviews. She also started a YouTube channel which has earned more than 200,000 views for her video tutorials. When not writing, Mary loves to travel and continues to paint. She lives with her husband and their two long-haird miniature dachshunds.

Book Banter EP 95: Brain Kaufman Interview

Hello My Happy People,
Today Dianne shares her chat with Brian Kaufman. Brian is a writer who deftly manages to straddle two writing realms, academia and fiction. By day you can find Brian working diligently as a curriculum editor for an online junior college. But like a comic book superhero, his night time endeavors lead him into a more fanciful world of fictional adventures that span a plethora of genres and time periods.
Brian's body of work includes but is not limited to eight novels that include a Civil War era historical fiction, a Steampunk inspired paranormal romance, an alien abduction adventure, and more. This does not even include his poetry, short stories, numerous novellas, and three textbooks. It is palusible to say that writing is his life.Due to the fact that writing and his family take up so much of his daily life, he has had to let go of a few other dreams, but holds fast to the idea that in other realms he has found the time to pursue being a pro-wrestler, a radio talk show host, and a heavy metal guitarist. Brian currently lives in the Colorado mountains with his wife and dog. Brian is happy to answer questions and can be reached through his website link below.
Brian's Website Brian on Amazon.comEnjoy,
Dianne

Book Banter EP 94: Faith Kramer Interview

Hello My Happy People,
I am thrilled to share my conversation with cookbook author, Faith Kramer. Faith is so much more than a global thinker, going beyond her own local traditions and cultural foods to bring her followers a taste of globally inspired Shabbat recipes. Faith is a long time food writer and recipe developer who focuses on the various customs and histories around Jewish cuisine.
Beyond recipe development, Faith also writes about her travels and the different ingredients used in Jewish communities worldwide. You can find her work published in different online publications including j., the Jewish News of Northern California, where she writes about food, cooking, and shares original recipes.
Faith has also shared her knowledge of global Jewish food traditions in cooking classes where she taught students about Jewish customs, celebrations, and holidays, and even led food-related walking tours. During these classes and tours she would teach her students about the impact of the economic, geographic, and political influences on regional food and traditions.
For those who cannot attend her classes, she has created her new cookbook, 52 Shabbats: Friday Night Dinners Inspired by a Global Jewish Kitchen where she shares her knowledge of the global community of Jewish culinary traditions, histories, and some amazing recipes.
Having made a few of the recipes at home, I was thrilled to bring Faith and her cookbook to Book Banter followers. Faith shares some of her recipes in December Book Banter Magazine and the Year End Book Buying Guide. To check them out, just click here

Book Banter EP 93: Leah Ann Brown Interview

Hello My Happy People,
I was so thrilled to sit down and chat with author, Leah Ann Brown. Leah discovered her love of fantasy as a young girl growing up in Oregon. Spending hours outside in nature, playing make believe, her imagination opened up. It was further fed by her mother and grandmother who shared their stories and books. These things all created the perfect climate for her to fall in love with fantasies and storytelling.
Leah created her first picture book while still in grade school. Her passion for storytelling only grew over the years and she dreamed of one day being a published author. She made the decision to make her dream a reality. She hopes her journey will inspire generations that follow to overcome their own obstacles to achieve their ow dreams. Overcoming personal obstacles is something Leah is very familiar with in her own journey. As a girl, she struggled with dyslexia but refused to let her diagnosis keep her from her dreams. Instead she let her challenges fuel her, sometimes having to work harder than fellow students. Her hard work paid off, besides graduating high school in the top of her class, Leah went on to earn a Pharmacy Tech license and a massage license. While Leah was doing well academically, she was still hesitant to finally write a book. She wondered if someone with dyslexia would be able to write a book. But she fell back on her on the fantasy stories of her youth for encouragement. So many of the characters in her favorite books were able to overcome incredible obstacles, so why couldn't she do the same? Armed with a determination to inspire young readers through her storytelling, Leah wrote Chronicles of the Hidden Realms, Return of the Light which is available through her website.

A: Sept-timberrrrrrr!

A: I’m falling for you!
Q: What is the best vehicle to use for a fall hayride?
A: Any autumn-mobile will do!
Q: Why are trees so carefree in November?
A: Because every fall, they get to let loose.
Q: What happened to the tree that deserted the forest at the end of fall?
A: He was picked up for being absent without leaves!
Q: How do you repair a broken pumpkin?
A: You use a pumpkin patch.

Hello My Happy People,
I am thrilled to share today's guest with all of you. If you are struggling with getting booked on podcasts, this is the woman to contact. Michelle Glogovac has made it her professional mission to be THE Podcast Matchmaker™. When it comes to making mutually beneficial connections for her clients, she strives to be the best and seeks out platforms that will ensure they engage with their target markets. Michelle moved around quite a bit growing up, finally settling in the Bay Area of California. This area suited her very well as she has an appreciation for wine. However her list of loves goes well beyond the local vineyards, to include books, learning new things, and helping others to get their messages out to the world. From Michelle's website:"I believe every single one of us has the ability and capability to change the world and we just need to do it. I want to not only live a life I love, but to help get the life-changing messages of others (and my own!) out into the world. We have the power to change the future and I want to help you do that."Besides running her own successful business, Michelle counts being a wife and mother as her most important achievements. Book Banter EP 91: Lynne Golodner Interview

Hello My Happy People,
I was thrilled to chat with the incredible Lynne Gologner. Lynne started her author journey early in childhood. She would fill page after page with stories and poems, using her creative talents to make sense of the world around her. Even today, Lynne keeps her early work nearby to remind her to not to lose sight of where it all started for her. Lynne would go on to earn a MFA in Writing, she worked as a journalist for 15 years in New York, Washington, D.C., and Detroit. She also taught writing for decades at a college level, even teaching globally. Lynne decided to shift her career in 2007 and moved from journalism into marketing. She created Your People, LLC but it wasn't long before she shifted her focus again to come back to her first love, writing. Lynne began writing books and returned to teaching. We chatted about Lynne's return to writing and her first novel, Woman of Valor, which was published in September of 2023. However, this was not Lynne's first book, having previously published eight other titles. She also decided to help other women over 40 to get their stories out into the public with the creation of Scotia Road Books, her independent publishing imprint. Currently Lynne divides her day between writing in the mornings while afternoons are spent teaching and working with clients. She also hosts her own podcast, The Make Meaning Podcast, where she interviews authors and publishing industry professionals.

Book Banter EP 90: Debbie Weiss Interview

Hello My Happy People,
I am sorry this blog is getting out a bit late today. I published the podcast on time, it has been live for a few hours now, but I was running late and had to get dinner started. FYI, I made another soup from Michele Di Pietro's cookbook, Soupified, which is featured in our November issue of Book Banter Magazine along with her Twice Baked, Loaded Potato Soup with Bacon recipe. This was the fourth recipe of hers we have tried and they have all been amazing! Our November issue also went live today and you can read it on our website, just click HERE after you have checked out our amazing podcast guest author in today's episode.
I am thrilled to share my interview with today's impressive author, Debbie Weiss. She is an accomplished entrepreneur and so much more. She has created a career that benefits not only herself but countless others with her work as a speaker, women's coach, podcaster, and author. At 50, Debbie made a significant change in her life, realizing life was too short to be spent always putting the needs of others before her own. She worked to change her self talk from "I can't" to "Maybe I can." Debbie consciously worked to change her victim mentality and refused to let her past dictate her future. After becoming a widow, Debbie became more determined than ever to share her message. Her debut memoir, "On Second Thought ... Maybe I Can," earned praise from Jack Canfield, co-author of The Chicken Soup for the Soul® series. Through her memoir and public speaking events, Debbie openly shares her struggles and strategies for success, working to constantly remind others they're not alone. Debbie acknowledges that life is tough, but works to be a beacon for others to show that dreams are worth pursuing.
She is a wonderfully friendly person and after speaking with her for just a few moments, it was clear how this woman is able to help so many others find their voice and begin to change their lives. Be sure to check out her full podcast interview by clicking the purple icon below and follow her on social media ... you will not regret it!

Book Banter EP 89: Michele Di Pietro, Cookbook Author

Hello My Happy People,I had the chance to chat with the incredible chef, Michele Di Pietro. Not only is she just a fantastic person in general, she is a cookbook author, food writer, menu and recipe developer, professional chef, culinary consultant, and a budding food photographer. Somehow she managed to find time in her busy career to talk with me about her cookbook, SOUPified: Soups Inspired by Your Favorite Dishes.
Michele began her professional career in a much different career field. After graduating college, Michele didn't head to the kitchen but instead started working in finance as a Certified Public Accountant with a top firm in NYC. However, her life was meant to take a different path.According to Michele, some of her favorite things are to feed people, create recipes, and cook for others. Through her Italian and Italian-American-inspired recipes and stories, Michele strives to provide innovation, inspiration and nostalgia from her kitchen to yours. So it only seemed natural that after leaving the financial world behind, Michele graduated from culinary school and created a new career path for herself in what would turn out to be a deeply satisfying move.
Michele spent years working for others in the food industry as a cook, recipe and menu developer and eventually becoming a culinary director for one of the world’s largest natural foods retailers. It wasn't long before Michele decided to take the next natural step and start her own business, It’s All About The Food, LLC. Michele consults on menu development, culinary strategies, and more for a variety of food businesses. As her professional success continued, Michele expanded with the creation of Mangia With Michele in 2017. This new venture was the culmination of her lifelong passion for Italian ingredients, foods, recipes, culture, and traditions. Through recipes, stories and her love of cooking, she works to inspire others to enjoy cooking with the flavors of the Italian and Italian-American cuisine. Michele is a firm believer that the best way to get to know others is through shared food, preferably around the kitchen table.Be sure to check out Michele in the November issue of Book Banter Magazine where she shares her recipe for Twice-Baked, Loaded Potato Soup With Bacon from her cookbook, SOUPified: Soups Inspired by Your Favorite Dishes. The perfect comfort soup to warm you up on a chilly fall evening!
On a personal note: My husband and I tried Michele's Lasagna Soup not long after this interview. It was beyond amazing and so easy to make. It was so good we had to try another. We made the Twice Baked, Loaded Potato Soup with Bacon the next night. Potato soup has always been my favorite and Michele's recipe is now my absolute favorite way to make it. This will more than likely be made in our home at least once a month from now on. I cannot recommend her and her recipes enough.
If you love to cook simple recipes that deliver incredible flavor, get her cookbook! Share this blog with your friends who like to cook and are looking for delicious, easy to follow recipes. Listen to her podcast and follow her on her social media for more fantastic recipes. She does so much more than just soup and she shares loads of recipes for free with her followers. You cannot go wrong Michele Di Pietro ... unless you don't follow her. Then you will be missing out! Don't do that to yourself, treat yourself instead. You deserve it!
Enjoy!

Book Banter EP 88: Otto Schafer Interview

Hello My Happy People,
If you are on TikTok's #Booktok at all, you have probably seen our guest today. Otto Schafer is the author of the award-winning YA contemporary fantasy God Stone series. His first book, The Secret Journal, was a winner in the Soon to be Famous Illinois Author Project and his second book of that series, The Keepers of the Light, was selected as a Semi Finalist in 2021.
Like many authors, Otto uses his own life experiences to fuel his writing. He grew up in a small historic town in central Illinois which he featured in his God Stone series. You can find many locations mentioned in his books if you find yourself visiting Petersburg, Illinois.
Otto lives in a log cabin which he shares with his wife, tucked away in a quiet area of the woods. Otto can often be found out in nature, running forrest trails near his home when not working on his books.
