Book Banter S3 EP 125: Andreea Rus Interview

Hello My Happy People,
Today I share my chat with Romanian born children’s book author Andreea Rus. Andreea had a clear career path in mind when she set of for college. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and followed that up with a Masters in Advertising. Both potentially financially lucrative fields.
After graduation, Andreea traveled the world on work and travel visas. She moved around to different states in the United States and ventured for a time back across the pond to the United Kingdom. It wasn’t until 2011 that Andreea and her husband made their final move to Montreal, Canada where they currently reside. Once settled, Andreea went back to school to earn a diploma in Human Resources and made the move to software quality analyst.
The idea of writing children’s books wouldn’t enter her mind until later when an incident with her 5-year-old son inspired her to create her line of entertaining and imaginative children’s activity and picture storybooks. Don't wait, go listen now to hear Andreea's amazing story from the author herself.
You can also find more on Andreea and all our authors from June and July in the current issue of Book Banter Magazine (link Below)
Enjoy,
Dianne

Book Banter S3 EP124: J.R. Sanders Interview

Hello My Happy People,
Recently during J.R. Sanders’ interview with Dianne Burckhardt on her podcast, Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt - Book Talk Podcast, the pair learned they had many things in common, from mutual author friends, to both writing historical fiction, both are trained to work in law enforcement, and they are even both originally from Kansas, having lived in towns that are only an hour apart.
J.R. eventually moved away from the MidWest and settled in Southern California with his wife Rose, where he worked as a private investigator and as a police officer. It was his work in law enforcement that led to his interest in crime novels. His love for the Old West, he attributes his Dad and family outings he took him on as a child to places like the Dalton Gang hideout, the Old Cowtown Museum in Wichita, Kansas, and of course, the infamous Dodge City.
It seemed like a natural progression to blend his two loves, crime and the Old West, to create the Nate Ross novels. Nate is a private investigator in 1938. If you are a fan of old Noir classic detectives, you will love the Nate Ross Series of books!. But why not hear all about it from the author himself? Don't wait, click the purple microphone to go listen now!
Enjoy,
Dianne

Book Banter S3 EP 123: S.B. Goncarova Interview

Hello My Happy People,
Sorry this is getting out a bit later than usual. Storms in our area of Germany are playing havoc wit hmy head. I am on day two of a migraine, but I will soldier on because today's guest is too good to miss!
I bring you my interview with the incredible children's book author and educational platform creator, Sarah Beth Goncarova (writing as S.B. Goncarova). Sarah has not only created a fun collection of books for young readers, she has built an entertainment business around her amazing Adventures with Abba Series.
Besides writing the books, Sarah is also the writer/producer of an animated web series and her companion read-aloud videos in which she also stars. The videos not only feature word for word reading of the books so children can follow along at home in their own text, but they also have text on the screen if they do not have a copy of the book.
The episodes all feature original music, sound effects, and Sarah shows off her talent for extremely engaging theatrical storytelling. With voice changes for different characters and exaggerated facial expressions, it is easy to be captivated with Sarah’s performances no matter what your age.The Adventures with Abba series follow the lives of So-So and Lina, two precious sisters who are at the center of the adventures they take with their lovable (and slightly wacky) aunt Abba, and her handsome (and perpetually grumpy) cat, Caruso.
The main cast of characters is supported by other fascinating family members who add both humorous interactions as well as providing examples of strength, resilience, and bring a strong sense of individuality to the character list. Go listen now to get the full story from the author and creator herself.
If you enjoy our content please consider supporting our show by buying an issue (of Book Banter Magazine for just $2.99. All money earned will be used to pay for hosting and other services that allow me to bring this content to you every week. We would also like to upgrade our editing equipment so we can add video to the podcast in the future. Thank you.
Enjoy,
Dianne

Book Banter S3 EP 122: Chef Ray Sheehan Interview

Hello My Happy People,
I am thrilled to share with you all my conversation with Chef Ray Sheehan. With the weather warming up and summer officially just around the corner, many people like my husband and I are looking forward to the opportunity to firing up our backyard cookers. While many people stick to the more traditional gas or charcoal grills, there is one Master Barbecuer who has dedicated a cookbook to the merits of cooking with a Big Green Egg.
While some may find the odd looking green, egg shaped cooker intimidating, Chef Ray Sheehan understands their trepidation and is determined to take the mystery out of making amazing dishes that will impress your friends and family at your next backyard barbecue. The Big Green Egg’s design uses ceramic technology to create a cooker that allows cooks to precisely control temperatures and crate an amazing abundance of delicious recipes for any menu.
Chef Sheehan walks cooks through getting to know and use this cooker in his cookbook, Big Green Egg Basics From a Master Barbecuer . This cookbook starts out with a simple straightforward introduction to the components of the cooker, essential accessories he recommends, set up, safety, and more. The cookbook is also loaded with incredible recipes from mouth watering barbecue, to various sides dishes, and decadent desserts. Ever tried baking Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookies on a outdoor cooker? With a Big Green Egg and Chef Ray Sheehan’s cookbook, you can do just that. So don't wait, go listen now to find out more from the Master Barbecuer himself.
Enjoy,
Dianne

Book Banter S3 EP 121: Mark L. Redmond Interview

Hello Happy People,
Today I get to share another conversation with my friend, Mark L. Redmond. Mark is a fellow western author and was the first author I ever interviewed on my podcast back when it was still Whatever Wednesdays and he was still brave enough to come back for more!
Mark fell in love with reading as a child. Saturday morning TV westerns were a big influence on his prefered genre. His fascination with cowboy culture led him to seek out books by great western authors like Louis L’Amour, Max Brand, Zane Grey and more.
From a young age Mark knew he wanted to be an English teacher and a writer. Mark honed his writing skills with poetry and prose while earning his teaching degree at Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga. He began his professional career in the late ’70's as an English teacher at Grace Baptist Christian High School in South Bend, Indiana. During his summer breaks, this young husband and father took on other jobs to support his growing family. Summers were spent gardening, working construction, painting houses, and when time allowed, he wrote.
Over the next several years, Mark would go on to publish numerous articles and short stories but it wouldn’t be until the late ’80’s that Mark would finish his first Arty Anderson book, Arty Goes West. Eventually Mark added books for adults to his catalog of published works and he is now working on new middle grade readers, The Box M Gang Series.
If you would like to know more about Mark. L. Redmond and his books, be sure to check out his website and go listen now to his interview.
Enjoy,
Dianne

Special: From Passion to Profit: A Writer's Guide

By contributing author, Cody McBride
The prospect of turning a casual hobby into a full-fledged business is exhilarating, especially if you love the art of writing. But you will need more than a passion for crafting words to make a smooth transition.
Strategic planning, a deep understanding of your market, and other qualities will determine whether or not you succeed. Contributing writer, Cody McBride shares some fundamental tactics for transforming your writing into a profitable venture, whether you specialize in blogs, novels, poems, or any other forms:
Pinpointing your niche and getting to know your target audience is the first step to making your writing hobby a rainmaker. Take time to conduct thorough market research and self-reflect.
Do you excel in crafting thrilling sci-fi stories or providing top-notch lifestyle advice? Do you have a knack for beautiful poetry? You must identify your specialty to distinguish yourself from others and develop a comprehensive marketing strategy that speaks to readers who cherish your content.
You also need to understand the legalities of setting up a business before you start making money from your writing. Registering your business, researching tax obligations, and establishing a legal entity (e.g., sole proprietorship, LLC, corporation) is critical. Such an approach will boost your personal and professional protection while laying a sound legal foundation for your venture.
Having a distinct visual identity for your writing services is essential, and a compelling logo is the starting point. The perfect logo can encapsulate your brand's essence and help you stand out in the industry.
Many writers design logos with Adobe Express because it offers a wealth of templates that you can customize with your own colors, fonts, and other elements. Take time to tailor your logo to reflect your personality, and you might be surprised how much it helps you connect with your audience!
The logo is just the beginning of your brand; understand that your brand encompasses the entire experience your clients have with your company. It includes your writing style, communication tone, and every other aspect of customer experience.
Be sure to put together a robust business plan that lays out a straight path for your company's future. This document should detail your objectives, revenue models, marketing tactics, and operational processes. It’s essentially a blueprint that allows your business to grow.
You won’t make much money from your writing business unless you price your services or products strategically. It’s important to balance the value of your work with the capabilities of your market. Market research can help you figure out competitive pricing — just remember not to undervalue your expertise. You can sustain a profitable margin and consistently attract clients with the right prices in place.
It’s difficult to overstate the importance of networking. Be intentional about connecting with other entrepreneurs, writers, and potential clients; you never know when the next collaboration, partnership, mentorship, or business opportunity will arise. Online forums, community events, and writing workshops can broaden your professional circle and yield relationships that help you through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
As with any other type of business, you can set your writing company apart by providing top-tier customer service. Remember to respond quickly to client inquiries, interact professionally with everyone, and find other ways to exceed client expectations. Happy customers will ensure you get paid and are more likely to come back and tell others about your brand.
Converting your writing hobby into a business is ambitious, and you must strategize carefully, prepare legally, and learn how to engage with your target market constantly. Establishing a distinctive brand, pricing your services well, and offering fantastic customer service will position your brand to flourish in a competitive industry. This venture is about more than profit — you also want to reap the rewards of doing what you love.

Book Banter S3 EP 119: Ulff Lehmann Interview

-Possible Trigger Warning-
Discussion of mental health issues, dark, grim, epic fantasy themes, and use of profane language. Bleeped words: k1ll, sh1t, a$$hole, pro$t1tüte, ma$terb@te, Fu©_
Hello My Happy People,
When you speak with Ulff Lehmann you would only know he has struggled with mental health issues because he is so open about his challenges. Despite the difficulties he faces with his mental health, he projects a friendly and relaxed personality. It’s easy to fall into a comfortable conversation with him about his books and writing. Taking care of his mental health is an important part of his life and writing is a big part of his self-care.
Ulff has been unable to work outside of home for years and writing has given him a creative outlet that expands his world far beyond the walls of his home. His books have given him a reason to reach out and connect with others who have found great value in the world he has built in his epic fantasy, The Light in the Dark Series.
Ulff has created a complex, diverse world of dark fantasy that harkens back to the original Grimm Tales where blood is easily spilt and even the heroes can live morally grey lives. Book one, Shattered Dreams, is an excellent introduction to Ulff’s world. If a reader can make it through the first three chapters of this book and still crave more, they will be thoroughly pleased as they work their way through the rest of the series.
Ulff’s work has even received praise from New York Times bestselling fantasy writer Ed Greenwood, who commented that “SHATTERED DREAMS is a rich, layered high fantasy, the beginning of an epic that will be well worth following for years to come. Looming menace, thoughtful world-building; a winner!”
Don't wait, click the purple microphone below to go listen now and hear Ulff's story in his own words.
Enjoy,
Dianne

Book Banter S3 EP 118: Robert Hilliard Interview

* Possible Trigger Warning *
There is a discussion of slavery and the treatment of black Americans during the American Civil War Era and how it pertains to Robert Book, In Freedom's Shadow .
Hello My Happy People,
Today Dianne is bringing you her chat with author Robert Hilliard. His latest book, In Freedom's Shadow , is an exciting historical espionage thriller based on what is believed to be the true story of John Scobell. There is much speculation around the accounts of the heroics written to have been performed by Scobell, Dianne and Robert discuss the challenges of writing accurate historical fiction when the facts are hard to verify. Robert does an amazing job of taking available information and weaving it into a fascinating and engaging story that captivates the imagination and keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
While Robert may be taking his first step into the world of fiction books, he has decades of experience as a professional journalist to back up his new author endeavors. Robert spent more than three decades writing on sports, history, and the great outdoors. He began his professional writing career working as a reporter for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review , but that is not the only publication to feature his work. His articles have appeared in Pennsylvania Wildlife, Upland Almanac, and Pittsburgh History Magazine.
Robert also has the notable distinction of having not just one, but three articles in the Baseball, Basketball, and Pro Football Halls of Fame. With his work having received this kind of notoriety, it is easy to understand why he was asked to contribute to his first book project, Rivers of Destiny , a history anthology. However, it would be a decade before his next book project.
In 2012, Robert released A Season on the Allegheny , a detailed account of a year spent hunting in the Allegheny National Forest. Even with another well received publication to his credit, Robert would wait another decade to publish his first fiction novel. In Freedom’s Shadow is the story of John Scobell, and escaped slave who becomes a spy for the Union to help end the U.S. Civil War. Robert brings to life a new and exciting twist on the traditional espionage tale that is based on actual events. To find out more just click on the purple microphone to go listen now.
Enjoy,
Dianne

FRIDAY EXTRA - Learning in Harmony: The Melodious Boost to Childhood Literacy

Article by guest contributor, Ted James
The magic of music reaches far beyond evoking emotions and creating memories. One often overlooked facet is its substantial impact on literacy development in young minds. Today, we dive into the myriad of ways that music intertwines with linguistic progression, ranging from vocabulary enhancement to fostering critical thought. By merging melodies with the world of words, children can embark on an enriched path of learning.
Using Melodies to Build Vocabulary
Incorporating music into the learning environment allows children to seamlessly acquire and retain new terms. Songs act as a mnemonic device, providing context to new words, making it easier for children to remember them. This unique teaching tool not only introduces fresh vocabulary but also cements these words into young minds, fostering long-term retention. This is also a great way for busy parents and children to spend time together because the melodic allure and repetitive nature of songs act as an aid, making word acquisition less daunting.
How Music and Grammar Work Together
Songs aren't just a source of entertainment; they are a goldmine for linguistic structures. As lyrics are belted out, children are exposed to grammatical constructs that are imperative for language development. The repetitive nature of music ensures constant exposure to these rules, making grammar learning less tedious. Over time, consistent exposure to songs can subconsciously imbue listeners with correct language usage, thereby cementing proper grammar.
Teach Phonics with Tunes
The richness of music lies in its vast array of sounds. Through various instruments and diverse vocal modulations, children become familiar with the intricacies of phonics. This early exposure not only enhances their pronunciation but also aids in their reading abilities. Recognizing and mimicking these sounds cultivate auditory skills, setting the stage for phonetic proficiency in language.
Invest in a Karaoke Machine
Investing in a karaoke machine can be a fantastic way to encourage and develop your kids' musical abilities. Singing along to their favorite songs not only fosters a love for music but also helps them gain confidence in their vocal skills.
Before choosing the right model, it's crucial to read unbiased reviews online. These reviews can provide valuable insights into the quality, durability, and user-friendliness of various karaoke machines, ensuring you make a well-informed decision. This step helps you find a device that not only matches your children’s interests and needs but also offers lasting entertainment and educational value.
Establish a Music Hub
Designing a musical corner in the home offers children a transformative space to delve deeper into music's rhythms and melodies. This dedicated environment, equipped with instruments, musical books, and listening devices, not only elevates musical literacy but also augments linguistic capabilities. As children immerse themselves, their growing literacy becomes evident. By creating a multifunctional space, you may even be able to boost the value of your home and to be sure to keep track of improvements, take before-and-after photos, and keep receipts to help quantify your home’s increase in value.
Hone Auditory Discrimination
One of music's gifts is its rhythmic patterns, which play a crucial role in enhancing auditory processing. Through consistent exposure to various rhythms and beats, children sharpen their ability to differentiate between different sounds. This heightened sense of auditory discrimination is pivotal, especially when it comes to distinguishing subtle differences in language sounds, paving the way for improved listening and comprehension skills.
Foster Artistic Expression
Music is an open canvas, beckoning children to paint their thoughts and feelings. Encouraging children to sing, create tunes, or even experiment with different musical sounds can spur their creative juices. As they engage with music at such a profound level, they become adept at expressing themselves through words, refining their narrative skills. The overlap between musical expression and linguistic prowess cannot be stressed enough.
Cultivate Analytical Prowess
The journey of learning a musical instrument goes beyond just mastering notes. It necessitates analytical thinking, quick decision-making, and problem-solving abilities. When children are introduced to instruments, they inadvertently hone these cognitive skills. The logical reasoning and analytical thinking cultivated during musical training can significantly influence and enhance their literacy capabilities, making them more adept readers and writers.
The interplay between music and literacy is profound. While melodies soothe the soul, they also sharpen the mind, bolstering language acquisition and comprehension. Investing in musical experiences for children is akin to gifting them with a toolkit for enriched linguistic development. Let the resonance of music be the guiding force in shaping young linguists of the future.
