Welcome to our holiday hiatus between podcast seasons. We usually play "The Best of" shows from the season that is ending, but this year we are bringing you interviews we recorded live at the Frankfurter Buchmesse in Frankfurt, Germany. This Buchmesse is the world's largest publishing convention and with these interviews we barely scratched the surface of the incredible vendors attending this conference.
In today's show you will hear Dianne and Pedro Burckhardt conducting interviews on the convention floor with these companies. They discuss business practices and products these companies provide.
Creating children’s books for more than fifteen years, Make Believe Ideas is passionate about creating books to enhance family reading experiences. They take pride in being leaders and innovators in the market. Their focus is on pioneering new ideas that children and families will love.
Pedro next met with Ganesh Singh of Parragon Publishing India. This publishing house produces a wide variety of books for children ages 0–18 and up. Welcome to our season three finale episode with award-winning, New York Times bestselling author, Tosca Lee.
Tosca is the bestselling author of The Line Between , The Progeny , Firstborn , Iscariot, The Legend of Sheba, Demon: A Memoir, Havah: The Story of Eve , and The Books of Mortals Series with fellow New York Times bestselling author, Ted Dekker. Achieving the title of bestselling author is only one of a long list of accolades she has earned in her career.
Tosca is an American author best known for her historical fiction novels and thrillers, Tosca was born in Virginia. Named after a favorite Puccini opera of her father’s, it seems logical that she once dreamed of a career in the opera. She would not that path.
Tosca’s attention moved from opera to ballet. She became a classically trained ballerina and pianist. Unfortunately, injuries forced her to abandon ballet, and the demanding regime of a professional pianist was not appealing. Once again, she had to find a different path.
Tosca attended Smith College, earning a BA in English Language and Literature. Later, she attended Oxford University, where she studied international economics. Tosca wrote her first novel while at Smith, but that manuscript remains unpublished.
While her first manuscript was not a publishing success, she did begin writing professionally in 1992. While working for Smart Computing Magazine , Tosca achieved her first author status as co-author of two computer books.Since her beginnings, Tosca has moved on to not only create an enviable solo author career, but has partnered with other New York Times bestselling authors, Ted Dekker and Marcus Brotherton. We strive to cover all of this in today's episode.

Hello My Happy People,
Hello Happy People,Mary Martha Greene is not a cookbook author by profession. It's a passion project inspired by family traditions and a desire to honor the women who created them. It also gives her a change of pace from her day job.
Growing up, Mary was heavily influenced by her family. She spent a lot of time by her grandmother’s side when she was in the kitchen. Watching the women in her family, Mary dreamed of doing something creative for her career. Mary loved to cook and bake and considers her return to the kitchen as a homecoming of sorts.
Her father was a family court judge and was very involved in politics. Her father would have a great influence on Mary's future. After returning home at the end of her first semester of college — where she was studying business at her father's suggestion — Mary was informed she would soon be reporting to the state house to be a page. From that moment, her career path was virtually set.
It would be many years before Mary found herself taking the time to get creative in the kitchen again. She credits yet another family member for inspiring her move to become a cookbook author. Her second oldest goddaughter was getting ready to go off for a semester at sea, but she had a request before she left. She wanted her aunt Mae-Mae to teach her how to cook.
As Mary began to search for the family recipes, other people came forward to request a copy of her collection for themselves. Mary started to consider taking her project to a wider audience. On a whim she suggested to a friend to ask the University of South Carolina Press if they would be interested in publishing her cookbook ... they were.

Hello Happy People,
Today I get to share my chat with Bestselling YA author, Amber Chen. Amber stands out in her career for many reasons, but the most surprising aspect may be her educational background.After graduating from the prestigious Cambridge University, where she earned a BA and MSci in biochemistry, she went on to work in science. However, when you note that Amber also earned a diploma in screenwriting, it’s clear that being a writer was always a possibility in her future.
Unfortunately, according to Amber, the film and TV industry in her part of the world does not provide her with the same kind of opportunities as her science degrees. Amber began honing her craft writing web novels on Wattpad. One of her early works, The Cutting Edge , gave her a taste of seeing her work turned into a screenplay.
After a lot of hard work, Amber did get a publishing deal with Penguin for her young adult, silkpunk, fantasy, Of Jade and Dragons . Her debut novel hit #1 last summer on The Bookseller and, as of this writing, is sitting at #2 in Teen & Young Adult Geography & Cultures Fiction eBooks, #6 in Teen & Young Adult Myth & Legend eBooks, and #15 in Myths & Legends for Young Adults on Amazon.co.uk.

Hello My Happy People,
Today I am sharing my interview with Edinburgh based writer and musician, David Atkinson. David attributes his love of reading to being a significant force, pushing him toward eventually pursuing a career in writing. From a young age he remembers being a voracious reader and even having a fondness for the classics that other his age tended to shun.
Even though David is an Amazon bestselling author, he still works a “day job” and one that could not be much more removed from his creative pursuits. Working in financial services, David find’s his writing to be a form of escapism from the less creative side of his life, but writing is not his only creative outlet. He is also an accomplished musician and used that talent to create a soundtrack for his latest book.
While David has not yet been able to transition to being a full-time writer, he has had a good deal of success with the books he has published. His first novel, Love Byte , was published by Buried River Press. This romantic comedy not only made him a bestselling author, but put him on a shortlist for the Romantic Comedy Novel of the Year Award (2015) by the Romantic Novelists’ Association.
David later followed that book with another romantic comedy, Squeezed . His third book in this genre, The Second Life of Nathan Jones , was published by One More Chapter, an imprint of Harper Collins.
With hundreds to thousands of positive reviews for his traditionally published, romantic comedies, one would think it would be logical for David to continue publishing these types of books. However, his greatest success was yet to come when he took a chance on another genre and turned to self-publishing.
Future Proof is a listed on Amazon.com as a time travel, comedy/drama and nearly a year after publication, it is still – as of this writing – sitting in the top 25 in at least three categories.

Hello My Happy People,
With recent world events, I am choosing to focus on the thing that make me happy, talking to authors about books. Today I am sharing my conversation with author Sebastian Dureaux-Russell. Readers of Book Banter Magazine may recognize Sebastian's name and book cover from a previous issue when he was a featured poet in the April/May 2024 issue. His poem, Ethan Frome Sled, speaks to a need for reinvention and creation while blending literary nostalgia.
It is not surprising to find that Sebastian has an incredibly deep pool of talent to draw from to feed his creative works. Educated at Duke Ellington School of the Arts and The International Center of Photography, Sebastian is not just an accomplished writer, but is also an award-winning photographer, speaker, and a former model who can perform the “Dior Turn”.
In addition to his award-winning photography, Sebastian has written for numerous publications including Where Magazine, Travel Weekly, and The New York Times . However, in recent years his focus has shifted from writing articles to literary fiction.
His award-winning debut novel, Burning with a Blue Flame , is a historical fiction adventure the centers around Pilot Elmer Darrel. Elmer agrees to compete against race car driver Humbolt Bratka. These men are both trying to reconcile their own personal demons as they speed toward the finish line while navigating through a maze of distractions including speakeasies, passionate interludes, and plenty of jazz.

Today I am so thrilled to share my conversation with Aislinn Brophy (pronounced ASH-lin Bro-fee). Aislinn can best be described as a decidedly creative soul. Besides being a dancer, a singer, an actor, and a twice traditionally published author, they have a long list of hobbies including “pawning off their baking on anybody nearby, doing funny voices, and dismantling the patriarchy.”
Aislinn takes pride in their passions and makes a pointed effort to explore identity and social justice issues in their published work. With the increased presence of social media influencers and their impact on society, culture, and communication practices in general, Aislinn’s latest book, the Penguin YA Queer romantasy, Spells to Forget Us , is not only timely, but relatable, especially with members of Gen Z and Gen Alpha readers.

Book Banter S3 EP141: Brian Prousky Interview

Brian Prousky likes to describe himself as having been two distinct people for most of his life. The first Brian worked a respectable day job and was a husband and father. The second, secret, Brian was a wordsmith, writing books in secret and dreaming of becoming a writer. He has said the only commonalities between the two were the enjoyment of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Mozart, Saul Bellow, and Roberto Bolano as well as tennis and hockey.
His “real career” was working for the government in child welfare, leading and running organizations. He considered it a “serious job” and “pretty tense” work, and it was an important job within the community that kept him busy. His first book was written between meetings, and it was inspired by, and a parody of, his job in social services. Other than providing some time and inspiration, Prousky says that it was otherwise a “massive inconvenience and impediment” on his writing.
He came close to publishing his first novel, Auden Triller Is a Killer , when he sent it to a publisher in New York. Incredibly, two days later, he was contacted by an agent and shortly signed a contract. When she wanted him to cut fifty pages, however, he thought better of it and decided to wait. He had written four novels, a book of short stories, and a book of poetry in the meantime, and he found a publisher shortly after he retired. Now, he loves that he can say that he’s a writer “proudly and openly”.
