Book Banter Season 3 Opener: Susan Horsnell Interview

Hello My Happy People.

I was scrambling to get ready for season three. I was doing good and had time to relax and then as always happens, Murphy's Law had to rear his ugly head and mess up my plans by giving me the flu.

I am recovering, but I am scrambling to get everything set up for the beginning of our season three episodes. For the next eight weeks we have some amazing authors who have published books on all aspect of love: self-love, love for life, love for female-led comedies, how to get over the loss of a loved one, and of course romantic love. We have romance authors from sweet, no heat to hot and spicy!

Today I am sharing my chat with Susan Horsnell. Susan is a USA Today Bestselling author from Queensland, Australia whose book catalog includes a selection of sub-genre romance themes. The sub-genres she likes to write include a wide variety from sweet westerns with Christian themes, to historical, gay, shape shifter, mafia, and contemporary romance. She has even written non-fiction and a few children's books to keep the mix truly diverse.

With more than sixty published works, traditionally and indie published, including novels and novellas, Susan has built a solid reputation for herself in the romance community and a loyal following of devoted readers. She is proof that an author can dabble in various sub-genres and not lose their market.

The women had a great time chatting about Susan's inspirations, her process and so much more. Click the purple microphone below to checkout the full interview. Don't forget to check out Susan's pages in Book Banter Magazine this month.

Hello My Happy People,

Our Holiday break ends today! We will be back with all new shows next Wednesday, February 7th as we begin season three of Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt - Book Talk Podcast. We are starting the new season with a two month Love Fest in our podcast and Book Banter Magazine.

We are celebrating love for Valentine's Day and beyond, because love makes the world a better place. We are featuring authors who write all aspects of love: self-love, romantic love, dealing with loss of love or a loved one, love of life, and more.  Mark your calendars, the Love Fest begins here Feb. 7th!

In today's The Best of Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt, Dianne gets to chat with the incredible Sagit Schwartz. Sagit is a writer, producer, and licensed psychotherapist. Her work has been featured in Medium, Slate, The Atlantic, Reddit NoSleep, and Lifetime Television. She resides with her husband, daughter, and rescue dog in a Southern California beach town.

Her debut thriller, Since She's Been Gone is on presale now wherever books are sold and is set for a February 2024 release. This book has been described as an emotionally charged dual-timeline suspense. The story follows one woman as her life is upended in a race against the clock to discover the truth about her own past and find out what really happened to her mother all those years ago. Since She's Been Gone has been compared to Laura Dave’s The Last Thing He Told Me and Jessica Knoll’s Luckiest Girl Alive.

Sagit shares how this book is in fact a love letter to her own mother and was a deeply personal project. Keep watching social media for more updates on Sagit as she makes the rounds publicizing her new novel, which seems to be on track to be an instant bestseller.  Listen now to find out more about Sagit and Since She's Been Gone is on presale now and will publish Feb. 6th, 2024

Friday Special: Author Resource

Photo via Adobe Stock

Hello My Happy People,

I hope you are having a great week and looking forward to an even better weekend. As you know, I am always on the lookout for people and programs to share with all of you which I think are fantastic author resources. So when I was approached by an Adobe Express representative and asked if I wanted to help spread the word about their products, I was happy to jump on board.

Back in my newspaper advertising manager days, I was very found of Adobe programs. They are simple to use and so versatile. But you do not have to take my word for it, check them out for yourself. Fair notice, they are giving me a free years subscription to Adobe Express to help spread the word but, jokes on them. I honestly would have done it even without the bene, I just love their programs!

Take care,

Dianne Harnessing Adobe Express:A Game Changer for Authors

In today's digital era, authors are not just writers; they're content creators, marketers, and designers, all rolled into one. Adobe Express, formerly known as Adobe Spark, has emerged as a versatile tool in an author's arsenal, offering a plethora of features that can transform the way authors create, share, and promote their work. This article hosted by Burckhardt Books delves into how authors can leverage Adobe Express to elevate their craft and outreach.

Creating Stunning Book Covers

The adage, "don't judge a book by its cover," doesn't hold in the publishing world. A compelling book cover can make a significant difference in attracting readers. Adobe Express offers an array of customizable templates and design elements that enable authors to create professional-quality covers. Even those without a graphic design background can use this tool to design covers that resonate with their book’s theme and genre.

Effective Marketing Material Design

Promoting a book requires more than just great writing; it needs engaging marketing materials. Adobe Express allows authors to create flyers, posters, social media graphics, and more via a huge library of customizable templates. These visual elements are essential for book launches, signings, and promotional campaigns. The platform's easy-to-use interface and diverse range of templates enable authors to craft eye-catching designs that can captivate potential readers.

Building an Engaging Author Website

An author's website is a critical platform for establishing an online presence. Adobe Express provides features to design stunning web pages that can include book excerpts, author bios, and links to purchase books. A well-designed website can serve as a one-stop hub for fans and readers, offering an immersive experience into the author's world.

Creating Video and Animated Content

In the age of social media, video content reigns supreme. Adobe Express enables authors to create short video teasers, book trailers, and animated posts to engage with their audience. These dynamic contents are more likely to get shared, increasing the book's visibility and reach. Authors can use these tools to give a sneak peek into their book’s narrative, themes, or characters, creating a buzz before the launch.

Social Media Integration for Wider Reach

Social media is an indispensable tool for authors to connect with their readers. Adobe Express seamlessly integrates with various social media platforms, allowing authors to directly publish their created content. Whether it's Instagram stories, Facebook posts, or Twitter graphics, Adobe Express can enhance an author’s social media strategy, ensuring consistent and visually appealing content.

Branding Consistency Across Platforms

Branding is crucial for authors to establish their identity and stand out. Adobe Express aids in maintaining a consistent brand image across all promotional materials. Authors can set specific color schemes, fonts, and logos to be used in all their designs. This consistency helps in building a recognizable brand, which is essential for long-term success.

Ease of Collaboration

Many authors work with teams - be it co-authors, editors, or marketing professionals. Adobe Express’s collaborative features enable multiple users to work on a project simultaneously. This is particularly useful for coordinating marketing efforts and ensuring a unified vision and style in all materials related to the book.

Adobe Express is more than just a design tool; it's a comprehensive platform that can revolutionize the way authors approach their work. From creating captivating book covers to engaging with audiences through dynamic content, Adobe Express empowers authors to be more than just writers. It enables them to be creators, designers, and marketers, all integral to the success of their literary endeavors. In the competitive world of book publishing, Adobe Express can be the edge that authors need to stand out and make a lasting impact.

Book Banter Celebrates Our 100th Episode with Special Guest P.R. Burckhardt!

Hello My Happy People,

Normally we would be sharing the "Best Of" episodes all through January while we gear up for the next season, but our 100th show just happened to hit during the break so we had to come back for a special, brand new episode.

Today I am joined by the man who has been kept in the shadows until just recently, I am referring to my better half, P.R. Burckhardt. When I started out writing as Stephen Burckhardt, I struggled with how to chat about my life at home without giving away that I was in fact a woman writing under a male pen name. I didn't want to just lie outright and refer to my husband as my wife and change Pedro's name to Peggy or something similar. So to get around that, I didn't use identifying pronouns, I referred to him as my spouse or most often, as my better half. When I did need to use something more specific I would just use his initials. P.R. was often mentioned in my old blogs.

Now that I have come out as the person behind Stephen Burckhardt's books, it has been so much easier to talk about family life, however Pedro was still not wanting to be mentioned too much in the beginning because of his work. But now that he is becoming more involved with Burckhardt Books, he is coming out into the lime light with me as the Producer for Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt - Book Talk Podcast and Book Banter Magazine.

Pedro's Professional Bio:

Pedro is a dynamic manager specializing in Supply Chain Management Consulting with more than 27 years of overall IT experience since 1997. He has a wide international consulting expertise in EMEA, APAC, and LATAM. He is an expert in Supply Chain models such as Lean Manufacturing and Just-in-time. He also has experience in Domestic and International Supply Chains including Multimodal supply as well as on-premise and cloud deployments. He has focused his career on worldwide IT service companies, leading teams with Consultants and customers to assess requirements and develop specific strategies. He specializes in continuous improvement methods that add value to the Customer Business Processes. With excellent relationship-building and communication skills with clients, vendors, and team members, Pedro has proven to be a leader who excels at project management in large and medium-sized projects.

Time for New Year's Dad Jokes!

Q: Do you sing in the shower?

A: I used to, but when I get soap in my mouth it becomes a soap opera.

Q: What do a tick and the Eiffel Tower have in common?

A: They're both Paris-sites.

Q: What do you call a fish wearing a bowtie?

A: So-fish-ticated.

Q: Did the dryer shrink your clothes?

A: I thought so, but turns out it was the refrigerator.

Q: How does dry skin affect you at work?

A: I don’t have any elbow grease to put into it.

Q: Did you get carded at a liquor store?

A: Well, he started to ask for it, then my Blockbuster card fell out of my wallet and the cashier said, never mind.

Q: What do you call someone who has no body and no nose?

A: Nobody knows.

Q: Did you hear the rumor about butter?

A: Yes, but I refuse to spread it!

Q: What did the hat say to the scarf?

A: You can hang around here if you want, but I'm going on ahead.

And last but not least . . .

Q: Why couldn't the bicycle stand up on its own?

A: It was two tired.

Best of Book Banter EP 99: Rebroadcast-Lance S.A. Nielsen's Episodes, Full Interview

Hello My Happy People!

Have I got a show for you today. In today's episode, I get to share my chat again with my good friend, Lance Steen Anthony Nielsen. I always look forward to chatting with Lance for several reasons.

Besides the fact that Lance is multi-talented, working as an author, a playwright, an acting coach, and a director, Lance really knows how to make me laugh. We bonded over brain damage and memory loss and it tends to be a running joke with us.

A bit about Lance, he was born in South Africa and adopted at a young age by an English mother and Danish father. Raised in Kingston-upon-Thames in the United Kingdom, it was here, according to his website, "... he spent much of his time engaged in designing fictional worlds for role-playing games, rolling dice, renting videos, going to the cinema and forgetting to tell his mother what time he would be home when he went out. While under the influence of many pints JRR Tolkien, he made his first attempts at writing a book series, The Prophecy of the Witch-King."

Since then, Lance has written many amazing works for stage, screen, and print. He chats about them all with Dianne in episodes 56 & 57, rebroadcast today in one episode. We had so much fun and talked forever. I had to cut out so much just to fit our interview into two shows originally. I am thrilled I have the chance to share this extended version of his interviews on our holiday break.

Be sure to check out his YouTube channel where I was recently a guest author on his Industry Interviews on The Outcasts Creative YouTube show. It is listed below as well as his social media links.

Time for some amusing Dad jokes ...

Q: Did you just find out you're colorblind?

A: Yeah, the news really hit me out of the orange!

Q: Did you hear that laughing too loudly is illegal in Hawaii?

A: It's true, they only permit a-low-ha.

Q: Why do you hate your job?

A: All I do is crush cans all day. It’s soda pressing!

Q: Why can you only recite 25 letters of the alphabet?

A: I don't know y!

Q: Why does mom keep taking all your candy?

A: I don't know but she obviously doesn't know I always keep a few Twix up my sleeve!

Q: Did you find a wooden shoe in your toilet?

A: Yes, it was clogged.

Q: Why is your dream job is to clean mirrors?

A: I don't know, but I can really see myself doing that.

Q: What is it called when a pig loses its voice?

A: He becomes disgruntled!

Q: Why don't you trust stairs?

A: They're always up to something!

Q: What is it called when you get a bad sausage?

A: I don't know but it's just the wurst!

Q: Why do you think your dog is a genius?

A: Because I asked him, "What's two minus two?" He said nothing.

And last but not least ...

Q: Is it okay that I love telling "dad" jokes, but I don't have kids?

A: No, that is a huge Faux Pa!
