China’s Down to the Country Movement

In December 1968 the Down to the Countryside Movement was decreed by Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong saying, “There is a need for the educated youth to go to the country side to receive reeducation from the poor lower and middle peasants.”

The movement named xiaxiang (sent-down), lasted for more than 10 years involving 16,230,000 students who mostly left for rural work rather than university education.

Apollo 8 Moon Flight

In December 1968 the Apollo 8 mission orbited the Moon ten times without landing, and then returned to Earth. The “Earthrise” image taken by the crew is considered one of the most famous ever taken in space.

The Infamous NFL Heidi Game

During the final 1:05 minutes of the game, NBC TV cut off the Oakland RaidersNew York Jets football game to broadcast the pre-scheduled Heidi. Oakland, trailing 32–29, then scored 2 late touchdowns to win 43–32.

Operation Commando Hunt

In November 1968 the US began Operation Commando Hunt designed to interdict men and supplies on the Ho Chi Minh trail through Laos into South Vietnam. By the end of the operation in March 1972, 3 million tons of bombs dropped on Laos slowed but did not seriously disrupt trail operations.

Warsaw Pact Invades Czechoslovakia  

In August 1968 the Warsaw Pact nations, led by the USSR, invaded Czechoslovakia.

The invasion stopped Alexander Dubček‘s  liberalisation reform known as the Prague Spring.
