Arab-Israeli Yom Kippur War

In October 1973 the Yom Kippur War (Arab–Israeli War) was fought between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria. Most of the fighting was in territories occupied by Israel since 1967 (Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights).

In September 1973 General Augosto Pinochet seized power in Chile in a coup against President Allende.

Allende, described as a Marxist, faced significant social unrest, political tension with the opposition-controlled Chilean Congress and intervention by the CIA.

US Halts Bombing of Cambodia

After the 1973 the Paris Peace Accords the struggle for control of territory in South Vietnam continued until North Vietnam released all American POWs and the US completed its military withdrawal from South Vietnam.

In August 1973 the U.S. Air Force bombing of Cambodia halted after a final round of bombardment of suspected Khmer Rouge guerrilla enclaves. A result of the Case-Church Amendment, the halt officially ended 12 years of American combat in Southeast Asia.

Libyan Arab Airliner Shot Down

In February 1973 Libyan Arab Airlines Flight 114, a regularly scheduled flight to Cairo, was shot down by Israeli fighter jets after it mistakenly entered airspace over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula – then under Israeli occupation. 108 passengers and crew died, with only 5 survivors.
