Lod Airport Massacre
In May 1972 three members of the Japanese Red Army recruited by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine attacked Lod Airport near Tel Aviv. 26 people were killed and 80 injured. Two of the attackers were killed and a third was wounded.

US Resumes Bombing of Hanoi and Haiphong
In May 1972, prompted by a new North Vietnamese offensive, the United States resumed bombing of Hanoi and Haiphong.
The raids (termed Operation Linebacker) were the first continuous bombing effort conducted against North Vietnam since the end of Operation Rolling Thunder in November 1968.

IRA Declares Ceasefire
In May 1972 the official wing of the Irish Republic Army declared a ceasefire in Northern Ireland, reserving the right of self-defense against attacks by the British Army and sectarian groups. The Provisional IRA however, dismissed the truce as having “little effect” on the situation.
