D.B Cooper Hijacks NW Orient Plane

In November 1971, during a severe storm over Washington State, a man calling himself Dan Cooper (later misreported as D. B. Cooper) parachuted from the Northwest Orient Airlines airplane he had hijacked, with US$200,000 in ransom money. He was never seen again.

Attica Prison Rebellion

In September 1971 a revolt broke out at the maximum-security prison in Attica, New York. In the end, state police and US National Guard troops stormed the facility killing 42 , 10 of them hostages.

Alaska Flight 1866

In September 1971 Alaska Airlines Flight 1866, a Boeing 727, crashed into a mountainside near Juneau, Alaska.

All 111 people on board were killed.

In August 1971 Australia and New Zealand decided to withdraw their troops from Vietnam; with the majority of combat forces leaving by the end of the year, marking a significant pullback from the Vietnam War.

US Begins Destruction of Biological Weapons

In July 1971 the U.S. Army began destroying its stockpile of biological weapons stored at the Pine Bluff Arkansas Arsenal. Microorganisms kept for use were capable of infecting people with anthrax, tularemia, Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus , Q fever, botulism or a staph infection.

Voting Age Changed to 18

In July 1971 the right to vote in US elections was lowered from 21 to 18. The drive was driven by the draft conscription of young men between the ages of 18 and 21 into the United States Armed Forces, primarily to serve in Vietnam. A common slogan of proponents was “old enough to fight, old enough to vote.”
