Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy

In June 1968 Senator Robert F. Kennedy, a leading 1968 Democratic presidential candidate, was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. The assassin Palestinian-born Sirhan Sirhan was arrested.

USS Scorpion Submarine Sinks

In May 0f 1968 the U.S. nuclear-powered submarine Scorpion sank with 99 men aboard 400 miles southwest of the Azores.

The wreckage of the Scorpion remains in the North Atlantic Ocean with all its armaments and nuclear reactor.

Catonsville 9

In May 1968 nine Catholic activists ( Catonsville Nine) entered the Selective Service offices in Catonsville, Maryland, and burned dozens of selective service draft records with napalm as a protest against the Vietnam War.

 In April 1968 Martin Luther King Jr. was shot dead at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Following the assassination, riots erupted in major American cities for several days.

Vietcong Attack US Embassy in Saigon

In the early morning of 31 January 1968 a 19-man Viet Cong sapper team attempted to seize the US Embassy in Saigon. Although successfully penetrating the embassy compound, the VC were pinned down by security forces, with one lone survivor surrendering.

The Tet Offensive

On January 30 1968 the Viet Cong  and North Vietnamese Army launched a coordinated surprise attack against the forces of the South Vietnamese Army, United States Armed Forces and their allies.

The name TET is a truncated version of the Lunar New Year festival Tết Nguyên Đán.  The purpose of the wide-scale offensive was to trigger political instability in a belief that mass armed assault on urban centers would trigger defections and rebellions in South Vietnam.

North Korea Captures USS Pueblo 

In January 1968, a North Korean vessel attacked the American spy ship USS Pueblo, killing one and capturing 84 crew members. While North Korea stated that Pueblo deliberately entered their territorial waters, the United States maintained that the vessel was in international waters at the time of the incident.
