Nixon Visits China
In February 1972 President Richard Nixon and his senior advisers engaged in substantive discussions with the People’s Republic of China leadership, including chairman Mao Zedong, First Lady Pat Nixon toured schools, factories and hospitals in the cities of Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai. Nixon dubbed his visit “the week that changed the world.”

Nixon Plan for Peace in Vietnam
In 1972 the military contingents of Australia, New Zealand and Thailand left South Vietnam. The United States continued to to assist the South Vietnamese in combat, primarily with air power as negotiators in Paris tried to hammer out a peace agreement and withdrawal strategy.
In January 1972 U.S. President Richard Nixon announced that 70,000 American troops would be pulled out of Vietnam by May 1, cutting the existing force of 139,000 by half.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
In the late 1960s, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi achieved fame as the guru to the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and other celebrities. In January 1972 , he announced his goal of establishing 3,600 transcendental meditation (TM) centers, each with 1,000 teachers.
TM is a form of meditation involving the silent repetition of a mantra 15–20 minutes twice per day.
