China’s Down to the Country Movement
In December 1968 the Down to the Countryside Movement was decreed by Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong saying, “There is a need for the educated youth to go to the country side to receive reeducation from the poor lower and middle peasants.”
The movement named xiaxiang (sent-down), lasted for more than 10 years involving 16,230,000 students who mostly left for rural work rather than university education.
