Writing Books vs. Scanning Books
- Writing Books vs. Scanning Books -
It's surprising to me that more governments, news companies and publishers don't sue Google in court for theft of intellectual property. I salute, commend and applaud France, Italy and Germany for doing so.
What you tolerate will dominate!
Google's own attorney Alex MacGillivray has admitted “Google’s leadership does not care terribly much about precedent or law” (2.3).
Like most companies Google won't reform its ways until its reputation is utterly tarnished and corporation made to pay hundreds of millions of dollars for its wrongdoing.
As an author of several books including the newly released "The Future of Food" (volumes 1 & 2), which took considerable time to write; the thought of Google employees scanning my book in a minute and uploading it for all to freely see without compensating me for my research, creative writing, and editorial work turns my stomach.
This again is another example and opportunity for the citizens of the world to discern the civilized countries where human rights, the arts and intellectual property are protected.

Google Books Stealing Intellectual Property
Google Books Stealing Intellectual Property
Google's vision and quest to digitize all the world's books is a terrible thing for scholars, authors, journalists and news companies.
As publisher Jack Fuller noted “a lot of content today is provided not cheaply, but free” (2.1 Lecture). The danger however as costs for content trend toward zero and news companies reduce staff is the quality of content likewise declines. Thus what used to be considered “news” means something different today in an age when sports and reality TV is more frequently watched than traditional news read and watched by our parents and grandparents.
The expectation of the online age that digital content and intellectual property should both be provided freely is a misnomer and a bad business model, which hurts both the news industry and consumers seeking valuable content.
As an author of several books, like anybody else working in the marketplace, I expect to be compensated for my research, writings, and editorial work. To expect writers and journalists to work for free and give away their intellectual property is discriminatory and dehumanizing.
Just because Internet advertising generates less revenue for news companies than print and TV adverts does not mean the intellectual property should be discounted and those who researched, assembled and wrote it should work merely as volunteers without compensation.
Like the TV Public Broadcast Service and National Public Radio, newspapers also need to seek sponsorships to support quality journalism and continue to compensate their employees researching and writing informational content.
Google's Richard Gingras has “intimated that newspapers and Yahoo” share a “fundamental problem in common,” they are portals which are disappearing online as consumers pursue other sites related to their preferred interest and niche (2.1).
Algorithm-driven Google News does not serve humans but corporate profitability via generating page views, as evidenced in the first 10 years of Google’s “biggest” news stories (2.1) – few of which resonated with readers. Such a model of creating and delivering “news” is neither noteworthy, nor of any value to the world.
As Jack Thorer observed, “most instances of mass production don't retool quite that often” (2.2). Google’s business model and delivery of digital content (“news” and books) is therefore unlikely to change. Where Google could better serve readers is to provide links to the many articles on particular topics, without diluting the search for keywords with its profit driven algorithm (not likely).
As Kevin Kelly, the original editor of Wired Magazine, has said: ”When people understand that it costs almost nothing to make a copy, nothing is all they are willing to pay.” (2.2) Google has created this evil mindset that tends toward thievery.
Google’s own attorney Alex MacGillivray has admitted “Google’s leadership does not care terribly much about precedent or law” (2.3).
The challenge for news media companies is to somehow persuade Google, other search engines, and online consumers to pay for digital content. This may be more easily accomplished by pursuing lawsuits against Google for stealing and freely providing intellectual property online. But as Siva Vaidhyanathan has acknowledged, the Google Books settlement is insufficient in and of itself to teach Google humility. Unless more lawsuits are filed against Google and settlements made to be paid, Google will continue to encroach upon intellectual property to monetize it for its own gain without compensating its creators (unless forced to do so by law).

Cities for People - Social Development, Lessons from Orlando, Florida
Cities for People - Social Development, Lessons from Orlando, Florida
Designing cities for people requires that we be aware of critical factors related to social development. Professor Jan Gehl & Lars Gemzoe wrote a summary of the attributes to what makes a people friendly place.
The title of the article was "12 Steps to Creating a Community Commons," which I provide below.
Dr. Gehl states that people will happily gather when given a good place to do so.
Which of these 12 points could be further improved in your city?
1. Protection from traffic
2. Protection from crime
3. Protection from the elements
4. A place to walk
5. A place to stop and stand
6. A place to sit
7. Things to see
8. Opportunities for conversations
9. Opportunities for play
10. Human-scale
11. Opportunities to enjoy good weather
12. Aesthetic quality
Orlando, Florida has been said by some pedestrians and cyclists to be one of the least safe places. I myself was hit by a car once while riding down a sidewalk. Few people stop at stop signs any more. Orlando has changed since the days of my youth in which I grew up.
Police have installed cameras at some intersections to photograph cars passing through red lights.
Every evening I turn on the local news heinous crimes (murder, robbery, rape, assault and battery) are reported daily in Orlando.
One good thing about Orlando is the climate is warm and conduce to being outdoors. A second positive is there are many world class attractions for visiting tourists, but not so much for local residents beyond Lake Eola downtown.
Downtown Orlando has improved as it pertains to architecture and some sculptures, but much room for further improvement remains.
How about your city? What could further be improved?
Check out Dr. Gehl’s book “Cities For People” for more ideas!

Navy Yard Killer, Navy Yard Gunman, Navy Yard Murderer - Hearing Voices of Demons
Navy Yard Killer, Navy Yard Gunman, Navy Yard Murderer - Hearing Voices of Demons
ABC Nightline said the Navy Yard killer, Navy Yard gunman, Navy Yard murderer was reportedly hearing voices before he went and bought a gun and killed all those innocent people in Washington DC.
If you are "hearing voices," that is not a good time to go buy and gun and shoot people. That is the time to get on your knees and ask Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to deliver you from your demons, renew your mind and purify your heart. God help the mentally ill and precious families suffering following the many needless shootings in our "free" gun loving country.
~ #HearingVoices #BuyAGun #DeadlyCombination #Jesus #God #demons #MentallyIll #heart #mind #GunLoving #America #suffering
1 Corinthians 14:10 - "There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification." Voices originate from God, demons, our own conscience and mindful thoughts, and others' words reverberating in our head. Discern between the four origins of voices and filter the voices content through the Word of God. In other words, if the voice is telling you "Buy a gun and kill innocent people." That is NOT God (who is love), but demons. Beware what voice you give attention and yield to. Birds fly over your head, but only you can let them make a nest in your hair. Thoughts entering and within your head are no different.

Online Digital Marketing Degree and Journalism Programs?
Online Digital Marketing Degree and Journalism Programs?
I'm really interested in the Master program at CUNY in Entrepreneurial Journalism, but not interested in having to live in NYC for 2 years to earn it.
Does anyone offer a Entrepreneurial Journalism program like this http://www.journalism.cuny.edu/academ...
online anywhere?
I know Full Sail Univ. offers an Internet Marketing 1 year Master program online, but the name of the school does not appeal to me. Plus as a writer, I think the CUNY program would be awesome.
In a digital age, who (if anyone) is offering Digital MBA's and degrees of this sort online?
NYU has a Digital Media MBA, Rutgers offers a mini-MBA in Digital Media....yet they all require you to be there .....
I earned a Master in Global Food Law recently from Michigan State College of Law online. When will Digital Journalism and Marketing go online?
I think UC San Francisco offers certificates in this but I question their quality.
UCI and UBC offer a Web intelligence certificate, but not exactly what I'm looking for.
I'm more interested in Digital Marketing and Entrepreneurial Journalism. Can anyone suggest a program blending something CUNY and Full Sail offers with a mix of digital business, SEO, and multimedia all in an online format?

Xooglers, Former Google Employees
Any former Google employees out there who haven't signed confidentiality agreements who would like to share their stories, comments and insights?
Heck even if you have signed confidentiality agreements you can post anonymously online.
I have read Google ads often are profiting heavily from gambling and pornography ads among other less than upright businesses. Others allege that Google profits handsomely off multiple clicks of adds from competing companies seeking to drive their competitors away from advertising with Google Adwords.
Has anybody heard anything about this or anything else interesting pertaining to Google corporate policies and questionable business practices?
How about poor quality search rankings?

Facebook vs. Google - Protecting Intellectual Property and Privacy Rights
Facebook vs. Google - Protecting Intellectual Property and Privacy Rights
Continuing this into a new post from a comment on a previous thread, I shared my opinion .....Facebook will NEVER top Google as they are in two different businesses altogether - social media vs. search. Facebook I predict will become increasingly irrelevant.
Intellectual property, privacy and freedom of speech rights all continue to be trampled under foot, dishonored and disregarded at Facebook. I recently had to contact Facebook because some Nigerian fraudster had taken my photos to create a bogus page of himself to pose as a Christian Minister and solicit people online "friends" made on Facebook for donations.
Thankfully after i completed a complaint form on Facebook (which was extremely hard to find) and Tweeted FB and Sheryl Sandberg, within 24 hours the fraudster's Facebook page using my images (personal images of me taken off from website). Not everyone else finds this process to be so easy. Nobody at Facebook answers the phones (as proven in my video and scenario below).
Facebook deleted all of my videos years ago I uploaded because a couple of them had been negative about a bank and other companies committing consumer fraud. Facebook makes money by selling ads to corporations. That is who they are in bed with and so much so, Facebook deletes its users content that is not favorable to the future corporate buyers.
Google owns YouTube and allows you to upload whatever you want without censorship.
Facebook violates people's privacy, changes the layout of users' Facebook pages without their permission. Alternatively YouTube and Google give you an option to opt out. For example YouTube lets you disable (their new feature in November, 2013) that will make videos uploaded able to be downloaded and remain on someone's computer or mobile device (in the event of power loss - so they say).
In other words Google is more apt to protect users' intellectual property with opt out rights, whereas Facebook just doesn't really care as much.
When I worked for the State Dept. as an intern at the Embassy in Timor Leste (a new nation recognized by the United Nations for 10 years) my job was to contact Facebook and ask them to add Timor Leste to their drop down menu of countries. I could never get anyone at Facebook on the phone. It was an aggravating experience, further revealing Facebook doesn't care about people, just profits and selling ads space.
I got so angry and frustrated with Facebook I made a video about the ordeal:
- The Future of Facebook -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r95efh...
My sense and feeling is Google will thrive and Facebook will dive. Europe will likely lead the way in achieve global legal reform (as they have in the labeling of GMOs in food) to protect intellectual property and personal privacy.

Great Commission vs Pastor's Local Vision
Great Commission vs Pastor's Local Vision
Being born again 23 years now has given me ample time to experience church life locally and global ministry internationally.
Understandably every Pastor is oriented, focused and primarily fixated locally on the flock over which God has called him or her to bear oversight and nurture the souls under his or her care.
Yet Christ also told His disciples to "Go into all the world and preach the Good News" and "make disciples of all nations" (Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:20).
Reconciling the wishes and emphasis of your local Pastor, local church and the Great Commission can often be challenging and sometimes disheartening.
Often churches are one man shows with Pastors with big mouths and huge egos. In other words, the Pastor has no more vision for God's people than being pew warming believers and at best pew warming disciples that applaud and give big offerings ...but never desires to build them up, nor release them into ministry to do something meaningful with their lives, gifts talents and abilities.
Those Pastors who say they are interested in training and releasing leaders (thank God as that is nice to hear), check their history and track record to see if they actually have and what exactly that looks like.
Pastors who say they support missions often take more money in offerings from the missionaries they "support" than that which they give back to global missions. In other words, some Pastors will stand up and tell their church they support missions (collecting hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars in offerings) but then only give the missionary they claim to support $100 a year. That is a disgrace and ungodly.
Church members with a call of God for ministry must remember that Pastor like most of us in society also has natural, family and financial needs and therefore understandably can have a tendency to focus on the local work and sometimes disregard (or forget) the global calling and Great Commission of Christ.
Pastor's local vision often needs to be enlarged, but rarely is unless Pastor's faith and heart first embrace the high call of God and the entire world for whom Christ died.
This is why evangelists often make great Pastors because they have a heart for lost souls (and hopefully do not just desire pictures of themselves speaking to large crowds for their egos sake).
If your Pastor however has no vision for the lost beyond the four walls of your church, does not support local and global missions; you may at times feel frustrated if you are called to souls beyond the USA.
I just completed 2 Master degrees (Global Affairs and Global Food Law) and therefore have not been as active in my church as in the past. I also just published a few books which were very demanding to write. I am a Licensed Foursquare Minister and attend a local church at times (but like most churches, local Pastors often only see me as to how I can benefit them versus my worldwide calling and global purpose for God) when I am not ministering, studying writing or speaking elsewhere.
Of course we must make time for the Lord, but God is bigger than the local church. Scripture encourages us to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, but likewise Pastors should not become dictatorial control freaks who use and abuse God's people for their vision and ego, while disregarding the Great Commission and neglect developing disciples to enter their ministry.
Pastors should not leave people in immaturity and spiritual slavery for eternity to just to ensure their weekly offerings are taken care of.
Love, learn and lead with humility allowing the Word of God and Holy Spirit of Christ to direct you.
The best of both worlds and the sign heaven is in control and God's love and Great Commission purpose are leading the way is when both the local and global ministry are simultaneously growing, the disciples of Christ activated in their ministries, and Christ being glorified while cities and nations are being transformed.

Mean Spirited Christians and America The Greatest Country on Earth?
Mean Spirited Christians and America The Greatest Country on Earth?
Mean spirited Christians are a huge turn off and rarely wield any influence with the world and the hurting people in it. As for America, this talk of us being "the greatest country on earth" greatly disturbs me.
How can America be the greatest country on earth given it has more prisoners locked up in jail than any nation on earth and its violence and crime rates continue to grow. Murder, rape, school shootings and bomb threats are on the rise in America. Poverty, infant mortality, obesity, illness, diabetes, heart disease, anger, animosity, racial tension ...these are what I see growing throughout America. Of course there are many wonderful Americans and outstanding things happening daily (so let us not focus only on the negative, but also praise the good). But in so doing, let us not put our heads in the sand and ignore our national problems before we lift up our voices and praise America as the greatest country on earth.
I totally understand how others in nations overseas must feel, both about America and mean spirit Christians inclined for more war instead of peace like Christ Jesus the Prince of Peace. It seems rather hypocritical quite frankly to be a Christian but oppose peace and peacemaking, but your nation's military is so powerful and capable of bullying everyone across the globe. Bribes and bombs (and "helping" only people oppressed in countries near oil and gas deposits) is not a good foreign policy.
This is precisely what inspired me to write "God vs Religion" and "United States of Arrogance" as placing religion, being right and self-righteous before exemplifying a God of love and grace to humanity is a misrepresentation of the heart of God. Likewise nationalism that says we are "the greatest nation on earth" ...and 25% of the citizens have never traveled beyond our borders to compare and confirm this assertion baffles me, but when we demonize and dehumanize others abroad who we know nothing about...that dwarfs and diminishes our national credibility and foreign policy.

Ambassadors for Christ, Love, Life, Liberty and the Salvation of Humanity
Ambassadors for Christ, Love, Life, Liberty and the Salvation of Humanity
In January of 1990, when I was studying for some exams at home for UCF, I was flipping through the TV to watch something so I didn't fall asleep studying. I turned on a Christian broadcast near the end when the host was concluding his show with an invitation for viewers to pray and invite Christ into their lives.
I prayed, changed the channel, watched 2 more hours of TV and went to bed (not expecting to receive anything, but realizing we never lose from saying a prayer). After all I grew up attending traditional churches with my grandparents and parents.
When I woke up and the next morning I felt liquid love and spiritual waves of electricity running in and through me.
God's messengers are forgiven sinners like the rest of us, but nevertheless ambassadors for Christ to the extent they get out of the way and point people to Christ. Sadly in an era of American Christianity, commercialization, and monetization of every mode of media and avenue of ministry, many of God's ministers are becoming slick businessmen and less ambassadors for Christ. God help us all not waiver but remain true to our heavenly calling and Christ our Lord.
Like the ass that God used to speak to a backslidden prophet and the rooster that crowed and caused Peter to cry, God used a TV evangelist to lead me in a prayer that opened the door of my heart to Christ (and being born again beyond dead religion and liturgical tradition).
Undoubtedly nobody is perfect, but one can never go wrong drawing near to God in prayer (surely the best part of most preacher's sermons and TV programs).
I haven't watched the TV host's broadcast in years, probably two decades. The man has come under scrutiny for his political views and seemingly self-righteous remarks over the years.
I do know when people give prophecies about world events and they don't come true (they look phony and discredit God in the eyes of unbelievers). Yet at the same time questionable prophets can always contend they didn't say when such events would occur.
The more preachers deliver their opinions and enter into politics, the less salient and influential their mouths are for God. Hence the apostle Paul told Timothy to "Preach the Word" (2Timothy 4:2). Christian "conservatives" (though Jesus nor the apostles ever referred to themselves in such a way) can sometimes pursue being right rather than representing Christ in love as ambassadors and reconciling the world to Him (2Corinthians 5:19-21). God's Word saves, heals and delivers lives not ours, nor our opinions.
The more Christ can be revealed in the Word (John 1:1,14) the more hope of salvation and transformation for mankind as they behold Him (2Corinthians 3:17-18). God's ministers must decrease so Christ can increase and be seen (John 12:21; 3:20).
I've been a Republican and Democrat, but today happily am an independent soul with an allegiance to heaven wherein is no lies, nor shades of gray. As for ministers, they are forgiven sinners and still works in progress so we must eat the fish and spit out the bones looking to Christ rather than Christians for light and illumination. God's Word and Holy Spirit never fail, nor disappoint.
