Multicultural Interaction to Improve Mental Health and Well-Being

Multicultural Interaction to Improve Mental Health and Wellbeing

The best way to often learn about something is to compare and contrast various viewpoints, approaches and angles from which to examine it. We all see, view, interpret and understand life and its many facets differently based on our cultural conditioning, family upbringing, and past experiences (some more vast or limited than others).

Multiculturalism therefore is useful to provide different viewpoints and perspectives to enlarge individual insight into matters related to mental health. The dynamics of every family differ, but culturally the way different ethnicities deal with family problems may vary.

As a former English Pastor to a Chinese youth group of young adults (and someone who has lived and traveled throughout Asia for 4 years) I observed how Chinese were less direct and not inclined to come to me with matters they wanted to personally express, but instead often used mediators (other people) to communicate their feelings.

Having lived with African-Americans in California while attending Bible College (and traveled on five tours throughout Africa), I have found Africans to be more direct and forthcoming with the expression of their feelings. Although being able to hear directly someone’s hurts and pains is helpful to know where they are as a person, it does not always give you time to adequately prepare yourself to respond appropriately to be of help to them.

Thankfully, I usually have been both blessed and a blessing to my African brothers when such heartfelt communications arose. Nevertheless having traveled to 70 countries, lived in Queens, NY (the most diverse county in the USA), and possessing some multicultural awareness; I know some people of other cultures like to have some time to mentally and emotionally prepare for intense interpersonal interactions rather than be caught off guard unaware.

Nevertheless both cultures have provided me more self-awareness (which is foundational to mental health) and insight in relating to their cultures and people. Such cross-cultural interactions enable us to see different perspectives, approaches and ways of dealing with people and problems which we otherwise may not have considered, examined, or pursued.

Stretching ourselves beyond our own comfort zone to engage and interact with other cultures beyond that of our own also is healthy, imparts wisdom, emotional intelligence and enlarges our soul contributing to good mental health and positive wellbeing. Such cross-cultural interactions and open communication should therefore be encouraged within support groups and used as a form of treatment to strengthen the mental health of us all.

Mental Illness - A Personal and Universal Experience

Mental Illness - A Personal and Universal Experience

Mental illness is a personal and universal experience. Every human being processes their unique personal experiences, family and cultural upbringing, pain, tragedies, disappointments and interactions differently.

How an individual interprets and assigns meaning to his or her personal life experiences is unique, but common feelings and emotions are universal as we all experience disappointment to some degree and emotional pain (though some more traumatic as those living in war torn countries such as Uganda and surviving atrocities that killed family members).

Yet to the individual inwardly wrestling with emotional pain, an American child who has just witnessed his father slap his mother (she now in tears), the scars of events can be equally as traumatic and life-altering (as to how a child thereafter relates to his father the rest of his life) as were a child to witness his mother being raped and killed by armed militia in east Africa.

Of course the American child may see his mother live another day, whereas the Ugandan boy may not. Certainly the Ugandan boy after completely losing his mother will have a different set of emotions than an American boy living with domestic violence between his parents. Nevertheless the emotional disturbance, pain, trauma, confusion and uncertainty exist in both situations and children.

The Ugandan child will likely have more to wrestle and struggle with beyond his emotions, considering he will now have to likely prepare his own meals, find work to provide for himself (unless his father does so), and simultaneously wrestle with all the before mentioned emotions along with a whole new set of emotions as he enters manhood long before most children in North America.

So there are universal emotions and mental battles we all struggle with internally after traumatic experiences, disappointments and seasons of pain. However how we internalize, interpret, process, attempt to overcome, and thereafter to relate to people often differs based on the culture in which we live, the ideals we have been taught by our family, and the societal expectations put upon us.

It is therefore necessary and beneficial for us all as we heal individually and globally to afford each other individually and nationally some grace, space, understanding, patience, and time to process our personal pain as we mature, evolve, and grow to be able to transcend our past and embrace our future with faith, hope and love. The more we can cultivate and extend unconditional love and acceptance to one another, the more we individually and universally can heal our wounds, grow in mutual understanding, and live meaningful lives beyond our past pain.

Medical Cancer Treatments, Torture and Premature Death or Heal Cancer through Nutrition

Medical Cancer Treatments, Torture and Premature Death or Heal Cancer through Nutrition

Radiation often destroys a patient's taste buds. That doesn't sound very therapeutic, nor a good form of treatment if it leaves a person with no desire to eat thereafter.

I hope one day nutrition and health experts can replace medical practitioners inclined to use chemo and radiation which obviously don't work if you were to ask the families of Jackie Onassis, Joe Paterno, Patrick Swayze, and former White House Press Secretary Tony Snow all who could have lived longer with cancer than the deadly medical cancer treatments they received causing their premature deaths.

I'm sure Hippocrates the father of medicine who advocated food as medicine would wholeheartedly agree with me.

The private joke among many oncologists is they themselves would never subject their bodies, nor their families to these "therapies," but lucrative as they presently are at $250,000 annually per patient it is tough monetarily to walk away from them.

Thus the joke in the medical industry, "The procedure was a success, but the patient is dead."

The human body is not a theater of war to be approached militarily with medical weaponry to destroy both bad and good bacteria and wipe out organs simultaneously. We must work with the body to heal itself from the inside out. This of course requires more intelligence, patience, and a willingness to listen and work with patients (far less profitable monetarily but renders exceptional results physically).

Perhaps this is why hundreds of millions of dollars invested in cancer research have not yet found a cure and many studies are aborted and never completed lest the results hinder the "modern" medical cancer business.

Foreign Cuisine, Culture, Tourist Traps and Traveling Abroad

Foreign Cuisine, Culture, Tourist Traps and Traveling Abroad

I'm taking a gastronomy course online with the University of Hong Kong at the moment and am interested in arranging some foodie trips in the future.

Tourist zones and Americans are annoying. I can say that because I'm an American and have traveled to 70 countries. Being around your countrymen in a foreign country kind of kills the experience. You have to venture off the beaten path beyond the tourist traps often to truly enjoy the local people, cuisine and culture.

Food Horror Story, My Favorite Food Horror Story Personally Experienced

Food Horror Story, My Favorite Food Horror Story Personally Experienced

My favorite food horror story is when I was in Mozambique, East Africa and told to show up the next morning at the home of the only man with a truck to obtain transport back to Malawi across the border. The gentleman woke up late, came to the door, and invited me in for breakfast. He began to feast on mice and eggs. Thankfully as I was thinking to myself ("There is no way I can eat rodents ....especially not for breakfast. But I do need a ride out of here and must not offend him.") my host and driver said, "Don't worry, I won't make you eat this rubbish. Just have some eggs."

I was relieved, saved my stomach from any more intestinal parasites and managed to get to Malawi by the afternoon.

Summit Church Pastor Isaac Hunter Resigns Amid Adultery Scandal, but Jesus Never Fails

The Orlando Sentinel reported Summit Church Pastor Isaac Hunter resigns amid adultery scandal on November 29, 2012.

Summit Church Pastor Isaac Hunter resigns, but Orlando born and bred Worldwide Minister http://www.PaulFDavis.com believes God's people at Summit Church with Jesus will arise and shine! (info@PaulFDavis.com)

Isaac Hunter, 35 year-old, founding pastor of the popular Summit Church in Orlando, resigned amid adultery scandal 'after admitting he was having an affair with a former staff member and did not intend to end the relationship. Four days later, Rhonda Hunter, his wife of 13 years, filed a domestic-violence petition seeking a temporary restraining order. The petition accused Isaac, son of megachurch Pastor Joel Hunter, of abusive behavior and heavy drinking.'

Saddened by this as much as everyone else who loves Pastor Isaac Hunter, his father Pastor Joel Hunter, Northland Community Church and Summit Church, I wrote Summit Church the following below.

Dear Summit Church Family,

Thank you for being a light and source of encouragement to young adults and families throughout Central Florida.

I'm deeply saddened to learn about Pastor Isaac's struggles, but I'm reminded of King David in the Bible was a man after God's heart, who also committed adultery. So while such a sin can cause one to fall from grace and disappoint his family and church members, it by no means separates them from the love of God. Let this be an opportunity for this issue to be addressed throughout our churches and society as it effects and impacts families across the nation daily.

I personally experienced the same disappointment when my ex-wife of 5 years whom I served with globally as a missionary had an affair with a Muslim and remained unrepentant dating male "friends" coming home drunk at 2am and neglecting to go to marriage restoration counseling I received before I proceeded to divorce.

Nevertheless to my surprise at the courthouse steps the Holy Spirit said "Well done good and faithful servant," because I had done my best and having heard "no more mercy, judgement has come" had to obey God and move forward with my life.

From my personal ground zero I wrote:

Having been born and bred in Orlando before touching 70 countries as a Worldwide Minister, I remain prayerful and available to minister at the Gathering Place should you have need of me to help heal your congregation and desire to let this season be a time of spiritual cleansing and renewal.

I trust our loving heavenly Father will lead you forth into a glorious future. Remember the sun always shines above the clouds and Jesus never fails.

Always keep your eyes on Christ and like Peter of old we can walk on water and overcome every challenge of life.

Sincerely,

Discovery Church which went through a similar situation advises their church family, for which I also ask the same of from all of God's people throughout the body of Christ:

1. 'Pray faithfully' for Sam Hinn and his family.

2. 'Pray for your elders and church staff' as they seek to administer biblical accountability with the appropriate balance of grace, mercy and truth in this situation.

3. Pray for the Summit Church family 'as it moves through this challenging time.'

4. 'Be slow to judge and slower to jump to conclusions.'

5. 'Avoid participating in gossip or speculation about this situation.'

Continue to 'honor the God' in 'worship and service' weekly being prayerful for the suffering and saints, knowing that we all deal with weakness and temptation and are not above moral failure ourselves. Therefore may we all guard our hearts, remain humble and prayerful.

Gathering Place Pastor Sam Hinn Steps Down From Pulpit

Gathering Place Pastor Sam Hinn Steps Down From Pulpit

Charisma News reports 'Sam Hinn has stepped down as pastor of the Gathering Place Worship Center in Sanford, Florida, the church he founded in 1996. The 51-year-old pastor took the action to begin a restoration process as the result of "being drawn into a relationship that has caused much pain."'

Pastor Hinn confessed, 'I have allowed myself to be drawn into a relationship that has caused much hurt and pain to my wife and family. I have repented and asked for and received their forgiveness.'

"The Scripture states that I must bring fort the fruit of repentance if I expect to be restored; therefore, I have submitted myself to leadership of this Church and the Apostolic covering of Pastor Ron Johnson of One Church."

Saddened by this as much as everyone else who loves Pastor Sam Hinn and the Gathering Place, I wrote the Church the following below.
