It's FRIDAY -- the 22nd of August. Today is going to be over-the-hill exciting, full of unexpected fun and surprises and maybe even a taco thrown in (I'm not holding out much hope for guacamole though) Why, you ask? Well, it's anything-can-happen Friday -- I believe it got started on Big Bang, but hey, wait, maybe it was anything-can- happen Thursday. I prefer Friday. So today expect this gorgeous Friday to send you paroxysms of joy, a couple of big belly laughs and maybe a taco. (please not a fish taco, that's just not right) And guess what? You can be part of it, you can be the instigator. You can do the unexpected -- your family, your friends, your co-workers -- hmm, what to do? How about bringing in a treat of donuts? (Please, not fresh fruit or a veggie platter that's so wonderfully good for you, please) Nope, donuts for all and a joke would be a nice addition. So think of one and practice it so you've got it down --

August 21, 2014

Thursday, 21st: Good morning, good morning, what a lovely day -- no, it's more gorgeous than lovely, I think. It's all foggy and cool and the cats are yelling their heads off to go outside and try to find their way through all the thick gray soup.

We're having our big football pool beginning the 7th of September. Here's how it works: (I'll repeat this a couple more times) I pick 4 games and predict the winners. You will take 3 of my 4 and add your own team if I haven't used it, for a total of four games each week. For example, my first pick for Week #1 will be 49ers over the Cowboys plus three other games. I'll tell you my results, like I got 3 out of 4 or ALL 4 right, or 2 out of 4, whatever. Keep a little notebook and a running total. Each week you can report out how you did and your running status. At the end, the highest win gets a free book (Yes, it has to be one of mine and if there are a whole bunch of ties then I'll have a drawing for the top 3 winners. But this has never happened before.) Since the Thursday night game (Packers/Seahawks) won't be one of my picks, I won't begin until Sunday. However, if you pick the Packers or the Seahawks, then that makes up your 4th pick and you'll use three of mine.) Okay? Was that clear?

More editing today, maybe some running around in Tiburon, who knows what the seals are doing now?

August 20, 2014

Yep, it's Wednesday the 20th and all downhill to September and Labor Day:

Now, you guys, no one can agree when we have the first NFL game, so here's what we'll do: EVERYONE tune in Thursday night football, the 4th to watch the Green Bay Packers play the Seattle Seahawks. If they're not on, then we'll know everything begins the 7th -- how's that for an equitable solution?

THE LOST KEY is getting really really stupendous reviews -- that's always nice since reviewers usually like to throw a "left-handed" compliment in there somewhere, like, "Despite too many bodies and too many suspects, which makes the story less realistic, Mr. McGoo's book moves smartly forward and will please fans." See what I mean? (Yes, I made that up). But no left-handed comments in the reviews so far of THE LOST KEY. J.T. sent me an over-the-top laudatory review yesterday that made me ask her how much she'd paid the reviewer --

The HCF was amazing yesterday, as usual. (If you don't know what HCF means, then tell me and perhaps I'll let you know). Lots of yummy goodies of the eating variety, lots of laughter and, all right, I'll admit it, some raunchy stories. The server used "beautiful:" every other word, like after one of us ordered avocado egg roles, she says beautiful, after someone orders iced tea, she says beautiful. I started saying awesome instead and it soon became the mantra of the table.

Have an awesome, beautiful day!

Yummy chowing down day at the HCF (High Cholesterol Factory) Tuesday, the 19th of August --

I did a bad thing -- I gave about the ending in KnockOut -- and didn't do a spoiler alert -- Sorry about that, wasn't thinking, so now I'll go pour water over my head, maybe smear my make-up and won't that be scary? Simply read the last line in KnockOut and you'll know all is well, okay? But my lips are now zipped.

Now, confusion: When is the first game of the season? The 4th or the 7th? Only those in the know, those who are positively certain which date need answer --

More edit, I know, sounds boring, but oddly enough, it's very gratifying. No major conceptual problems so far, only simple editing. Talk about Sherlock kicking big butt -- and Savich and Griffin are in the deepest strangest more terrifying caca --

GREAT NEWS: I FINISHED Nemesis yesterday -- yep, all done. Once home from Mendocino, I'll start at the beginning and edit it all the way through. Needless to say the last twenty pages will need serious editing, but it's DONE. This is always an excellent feeling. This thriller only took about four and a half months to write. People ask me if after 73 books, it gets easier. The answer is a straight up NO -- every single book is different. This one really flowed (I think it's because J.T. and I outlined it together when she was here in April) Other books make me want to pull my hair out and rant and kick the nearest fern in my office, which I don't do because the ferns are delicate and I love them.
I still haven't heard if the publisher likes NEMESIS better than SHOWDOWN -- we'll see. I personally think Nemesis has more gravitas -- what do you think?

Taking three days off and to be honest here, it feels weird -- I've gotta do something splendid, something crazy, something sweet -- I'll give it a shot. As for you guys, you have only one big responsibility: Keep your lovely bodies moving and twisting and stretching. As for your mouth -- keep smiling, if you want to twist it a bit, that's okay, too --

Aug. 8, 2014

Can you believe it's FRIDAY again? The big 8th of August --

Today is Newsletter-writing day (I know it's early, but lots of scrunch time problems, so this is the day) If you still don't get my newsletter, simply email me at ReadMoi@gmail.com and tell me you want to climb aboard.

Who saw the 49ers get their butts handed to them last night? Depressing, aggravating, maddening, and you wanted to kick something. I was hoping for a rocket beginning (yes, even pre-season) but alas -- hope this isn't a foul portent.

Any movie recommendations?

August 6, 2014

What a slap bang Wednesday, 6th of August (already -- did I even mention that August is always a month that loves to run all out with only a brief pause for those on vacation? Like traveling up to Canada/Idaho to Glacier National Park?) Yep, off in a couple of weeks, been looking forward to seeing this magnificent place.
Who's been to Glacier Natl Park? If so, tell me what you loved --

Still working on the second to last denouement in Showdown -- had an epiphany yesterday when getting nails done -- you grin and shake your head, but it's true, you simply never know when a major league ephiphany will swoop down and sizzle right into your ready brain. This a.m. I'll see if it works, so digits crossed, if you please --

Tuesday Aug. 5, 2014

It's shaping up to be a great Tuesday, August 5th -- turns out that photo with Lady Gaga holding Bombshell, she posted it on her Facebook page (or rather her staff posted it, or her mom posted ot, or maybe an unknown friend of mine. Who knows?) In any case, here's the moral to the photo: you never know when some lovely free advertising is going to swoop down and give you a big smooch -
-
I'm coming up to the last two denouements in SHOWDOWN (you know, the FBI thriller for next year, yep, next year -- 2015 -- can you believe that far-away year would ever roll around?) When I worry about how to handle a scene like the first denouement, I shut off my brain and simply sit down and usually out it comes right out, something I hadn't even considered or thought about. So, you hear me, Gods of Thrillers? Come through yet again for mama -- I'll let you know if I'm still beloved by the gods.

TGIF -- Aug. 1, 2014

What a wonderful day -- August 1st. You want to know why? Two reasons: My cold from hell is BETTER and it's soon to be the WEEKEND, where there's no guilt about not working (Well, maybe just a bit tomorrow, work, not guilt)
The RED SHOES -- seen in the photo of me duded up in black dress? Do you know they're 8 hour shoes? How do I know that, you might ask. Well, when you're on book tour, you have to take at least 4 pairs of shoes since they're all different and exhaust your tootsies in different ways, different times. The red shoes are my "performing night" shoes -- yep, every night -- and they really do go for 8 hours -- the longest of any tour shoes I've ever had PLUS, they are so hot, even I want to kiss them and fondle my own toes. (well, not really, but I thought it sounded funny) They always draw attention and comments and it's true here -- men as well as women go nuts over them. (They're Weitzman)
I'm doing the gym today, No, I'm not going to kiss anyone or shake hands with anyone, or get close to anyone -- maybe I'll wear a warning sign, that'd be good -- not going to work out hard, just get moving again -- Have all of you been exercising for me this past week? I can't believe it, 8 days without "official" exercise -- this isn't good. I scent disapproval in the Force, maybe punishment coming beyond the cold from Hell, maybe even a kick in the chops, keeping the cold around longer than it should be.
