"The group's most ambitious and carefully crafted release yet" -Wall Street Journal

"If [John McCauley] gets personal, he's not self-indulgent. He's just a bruised craftsman, impressively plying his trade. -Rolling Stone "[Negativity is] the most courageous effort of the band's yet" - Esquire
"The possible new directions hinted at by Negativity's 12 tracks seem to bode well for Deer Tick's long-term viability as a band" - American Songwriter "Laced with string and horn accompaniments, it's both a departure from the band's previous output and a natural step in the progression of a group that has morphed
with every release" -Paste Magazine (20 Fall Albums We're Looking Forward To)"This is easily Deer Tick's most complete album to date" - FILTER "McCauley's songwriting has become decidedly more introspective, and the band's sonic palette has grown to match it." -Garden & Gun "The Rhode Island rockers may be at the peak of their performance game, coming off as confident and tight as ever, even on the new jams. If there's ever been a time to get bitten by the Deer Tick, um, tick, it's right now" -Consequence of Sound

Bear Mountain Announce Fall Tour Dates

Bear Mountain Announce Fall Tour Dates  Debut Album XO Out Now On Last Gang Records

XO works within so many '80s tropes while hitting contemporary pop notes-and refusing to be defined by either. - Consequence Of Sound"Congo" showcases a nice build-up not like an avalanche, but like all the snow on a hill melted at once to slop down and water a big garden. - FADERClub-ready dance tracks, arena sized atmospherics, and an indie pop sensibility in the songwriting...it's a pretty great mix and sounds like it will be totally fun live. - Brooklyn VeganThe fact they could catch so much attention...says something about the potential and staying power of their music. - Billboard.comListen: "Two Step" via SoundCloudListen: "Congo" via SoundCloud
Vancouver's Bear Mountain is on tour now in support of their critically acclaimed debut album XO out now on Last Gang. The band's fall tour will include shows supporting Islands, MS MR and co-headling dates with The Belle Game. The upcoming tour will also include stops at U.S. festivals including Austin City Limits and New York's CMJ Music Marathon.  "'A hopeful utopian future' is how one of our friends best described our sound," Ian Bevis, frontman of Vancouver based electro-dance band Bear Mountain, explains. Born and raised in Vancouver, Bevis' affinity for experimenting with sounds and beats on his MPC grew quickly. He left Vancouver for the University of Victoria where Bevis became friends with, then Entomology major, guitarist Kyle Statham and the two began collaborating on various styles of music.
A few years and a few bands later, Bear Mountain was officially born as the bedroom project of Bevis and Statham in 2011. With their name drawing reference from the Jack Kerouac classic "Dharma Bums", the two set out to find an alternative sound that blended live instrumentation with a dancing heartbeat. Soon after the recording of their first bedroom demos, the duo felt their sound was lacking a strong backbone and enlisted the help of Bevis' identical twin brother, drummer Greg Bevis. Bear Mountain's tight live performances and eclectic blend of sounds caught the attention of, now band member, Kenji Rodriguez. Flipping the traditional role of "band member" on its head, Rodriguez serves as the band's visual and creative director. Also a collaborator at Tangible Interaction, one of the world's premier trailblazers in interactive visuals and lighting, Rodriguez manipulates projections and lights live right from the stage bringing a unique look and experience to every Bear Mountain performance.
"Two Step", the opening to Bear Mountain's debut album, XO, begins with a tropical samba-style drum loop layered with tight, live drums, lush synth sounds, and chopped vocal samples. Hooky synth lines and Bevis' powerful and emotive vocals lay atop nostalgic house-drenched production on "Faded", the midway point of the album. "XO" is a collection of unmistakably fresh songs that manage to capture the feeling of the infinite and the impossible all rolled into one. "XO" is available now worldwide through Last Gang Records.    Bear Mountain Tour Dates

Night Beats New Album Out This Week

NIGHT BEATS RELEASE NEW ALBUM SONIC BLOOM THIS WEEK
SONIC BLOOM STREAMING IN FULL VIA SPIN
  Night Beats
"It's thirteen tracks of groovy, garagey psych and perfect for your next head trip." -  BrooklynVegan
The Reverberation Appreciation Society, the label arm of Austin Psych Fest, is excited to release the new Night Beats record  Sonic Bloom  this week on vinyl, CD, digital download and cassette (co-release with Burger Records). In celebration of the release, Night Beats are streaming Sonic Bloom in its entirety, which premiered via  SPIN . SPIN, who call Night Beats "Seattle rabble-rousers [who] specialize in squalling, reverb-blasted garage rock," praised the album and highlighted its diversity, noting "rollicking bar-blooze number 'Satisfy Your Mind' winds up sharing space with drone-splosion 'Catch a Ride to Sonic Bloom.' Meanwhile 'Rat King' is prone to punk-addled freakouts and 'As You Want' is full of swooning ah's and oohs." Sonic Bloom is available to stream/embed in full HERE.
Recorded in a Tacoma, Washington warehouse, Sonic Bloom is an explosion of reverb soaked rock and soul blended with sharp drone numbers and classic rhythm-and-blues founded tracks. From the haunting psychic groove of 'Seven Poison Wonders' to the sparse Zombies influenced 'Playing Dead' to the squealing ruckus of 'Rat King', Sonic Bloom harkens back to the outer corners of rock and roll radio of yore.
The Seattle-based band have spent past few years relentlessly touring, hitting over 20 countries. The trio - featuring Danny Lee Blackwell on guitar/vocals, Tarek Wegner on bass/vocals, and James Traeger on drums/vocals - will keep up this pace, touring this fall in support of Sonic Bloom. Elf Power streams upcoming LP on NPR's First Listen

Athens, GA Elephant 6 mainstays Elf Power
stream upcoming LP on NPR's First Listen

"...Elf Power's strongest, most cohesive work in a decade." - NPR

On tour this fall with Neutral Milk Hotel

DOWNLOAD / STREAM / EMBED individual tracks:
"A Gray Cloth Covering My Face" via NPR's All Songs Considered
"Sunlight on the Moon" via Pitchfork

Elf Power formed in 1994 and over the last 19 years have released twelve albums, two EPs, and a handful of singles, while touring North America, Europe, and Japan many times. Albums such as 1998’s Dave Fridmann-produced A Dream In Sound and 2008’s collaboration with the late Vic Chesnutt, Dark Developments have cemented the bands’ reputation as the finest purveyors of modern melodic pychedelic folk rock around.

Their latest album, Sunlight On The Mooncombines the scuzzy, sleazy recording qualities of their early lo-fi masterworks with their powerful live bombast, with experiments in Kraftwerk-styled/Eno-esque drum machine minimalism, into a seamless, perfectly flowing whole. The album’s release on October 1, 2013 coincides with American tour dates with the recently revived Neutral Milk Hotel, with whom Elf Power did their first big national tour 15 years ago in 1998! Many more headlining shows throughout America and Europe are planned for the fall and spring. Singer/songwriter Andrew Rieger and longtime collaborator multi-instrumentalist Laura Carter are joined by James Huggins (Of Montreal/Great Lakes) on bass, and Peter Alvanoson drums, though all the members play a wide variety of instruments on the recordings. Longtime collaborator* Bryan Poole (Of Montreal)* still joins the band on guitar at live shows.
The band recorded the latest record in a variety of settings ranging from singer/songwriter Andrew Rieger’s home studio, to Athens, GA’s The Glow studio, to Lavonia, GA’s Gypsy Farm Studios, a long derelict country music theatre located in rural Georgia. Newly renovated and transformed into a recording studio, the beautiful auditorium hosted concerts from the likes of Dolly Parton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and George Jones throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Some of the songs sprung from a return to Elf Power’s original mode of songwriting, writing and recording the song simultaneously without rehearsal. Songs like “Lift the Shell”, “A Grey Cloth Covering My Face” and “Things Lost” were recorded as they were being written with Rieger playing all of the basic instrumentation and other band members later embellishing the creations with their own flavors. Often, a more fully rehearsed “full band” version was recorded as well, but the more minimalistic original versions were preferred for their stranger, looser qualities.
Sunlight On The Moon sees release on October 1, 2013 as a joint release on Darla Records / Orange Twin Records. Orange Twin Records works in conjunction with The Orange Twin Conservation Community, 155 acres of beautiful land on the outskirts of Athens that has initiated the development of a highly progressive, self-sustainable and ecologically-minded cluster village and nature preserve.

"Oil City Confidential" DVD

Julien Temple's award-winning doc on Dr. Feelgood, "Oil City Confidential"  on DVD November 5th " Oil City is 100% pure below sea level, Canvey Island Noir." - Julien Temple 2009  Julien Temple's  Oil City Confidential is the last film in his trilogy on British music of the 1970s. It is a prequel to his landmark films about punk figureheads the Sex Pistols in The Filth & The Fury and Joe Strummer in The Future Is Unwritten.
Rather than being standard 'rockumentaries', Julien uses the music as a prism through which he examines the social and cultural conditions of the times. The films share his characteristic cinematic language - an irreverent and anarchic style of montage of archive and fictive footage, which he pioneered in The Great Rock & Roll Swindle. The Sex Pistols' and Joe Strummer's roles are well known, but Dr Feelgood, who are the subject of  Oil City Confidential , played a vital role in creating those conditions for that cultural explosion and is a story that is as yet untold. Oil City Confidential is a film noir feature length documentary and about Dr Feelgood; it's the story of four men in cheap suits who crashed out of Canvey Island in the early '70s, sandpapered the face of rock'n'roll and left all that came before a burnt-out ruin, four estuarine John-the-Baptists to Johnny Rotten's anti-Christ.Cannibalizing the visual flotsam and jetsam of our society, welding into an emotionally engaging and humorous whole,  Oil City Confidential sets out to explore this unique time, place and social landscape - all of which was responsible for shaping the identity of the band and which, more than any other, defined the strange cultural vacuum which existed before the coming of punk rock.

NORWAY'S JENNY HVAL TO EMBARK ON FIRST NORTH AMERICAN TOUR NEXT WEEK; STREAM NEW SONG, "THE COOL, COOL RIVER" (PAUL SIMON COVER)
http://snd.sc/15b3d5m "Innocence Is Kinky bristles with provocations: Hval's lyrics roll around gleefully in tangles of body, mind, sexuality, gender. . . the music on Innocence Is Kinky is beckoning and beautiful, one that takes full advantage of Hval's striking voice." --  Pitchfork  [Overlooked Records, 2013]
"Jenny Hval doesn't just sing songs. Rather, she constructs them out of layers of perfectly elongated lyrics that she stretches between guitar chords and keyboard notes. Her provocative music is dissonant and devastating and, at the same time, completely riveting."--  TIME  [7 Scandinavian Bands You Should Listen To Now]

Next week marks the kick-ff of Norwegian artist Jenny Hval's debut North American tour. Recognized as one of "7 Scandinavian Bands You Should Listen To Now" by  TIME , Jenny is a multidisciplinary and transgressive artist whose music is obscurely complex, present and provocative. Her new album,  Innocence Is Kinky (Rune Grammofon) overflows with intimate detail and surrealistic bodily imagery, weaving experimental pop with injections of mythology, theory and gender politics. For this first tour of North America, Jenny (vocals, synth) and band -- Håvard Volden (electric guitars, synth, electronics) and Kyrre Laastad(drums, synth) --- will put on an arresting performance that will be a perfect accompaniment to Jenny's confident presentation on record. In support of this tour, Jenny is sharing her new and very distinct cover of Paul Simon's "The Cool Cool River," which, as  Pitchfork  describes, "jettisons the original's disjointed shuffle and turns the already-slightly-uneasy tune into something more skeletal and unnerving." Listen below, and make sure to check out (or revisit) the "Innocence Is Kinky" videoLISTEN TO/SHARE JENNY HVAL'S "THE COOL, COOL RIVER" (PAUL SIMON COVER) - http://snd.sc/15b3d5m
