PIXIES ADD 33-CITY NORTH AMERICAN LEGTO ITS 2013-2014 GLOBAL TREK Two-time Sundance Film Festival Jury Prize Winner  Directs Brand New "Andro Queen" Music Video L-R:  Black Francis, touring bassist Kim Shattuck, David Lovering, Joey SantiagoPhoto credit:  Michael Halsband
LOS ANGELES, CA - MONDAY, October 7, 2013 - Fortified with eight instantly-sold-out U.S. club shows, a sold-out UK/European tour, and critical and fan acclaim for the live shows and five brand-new songs, Pixies announce that a 33-city, coast-to-coast North American leg has been added to its 2013-2014 world tour and will kick off in Toronto, Canada on January 15, 2014.  Tickets go on sale to the public this Friday, October 11 at 10:00AM local time; log onto pixiesmusic.com for purchasing information.
"...there's no denying Pixies' superlative live impact.  Deal or no Deal." - Guardian UK
Pixies - Black Francis/guitars, vocals, Joey Santiago/guitars, drummer David Lovering, and touring bassist Kim Shattuck - are on the road in support of the band's first collection of new music in more than 20 years that began with the surprise release of the single "Bagboy" on June 28.   That was followed by the four-track EP-1that came out of the blue on September 3.  "Andro Queen," the melancholy, surrealistic sci-fi ballad that opensEP-1, is the project's brand-new music video, and now available at www.pixiesmusic.com
"Andro Queen" was conceived and directed by filmmaker Ondi Timoner through her Interloper Films production company.  Timoner won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Features at the Sundance Film Festival twice and has work permanently displayed at New York's Museum of Modern Art.  She also produced and directed the original VH-1 series "Sound Effects," and directed the opening film for President Clinton's 2011 birthday/fundraiser held at the Hollywood Bowl that featured Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, Jay-Z, and the President, among others.  Timoner is the founder and director of web-channel "A Total Disruption" that features the work of cutting-edge innovators and entrepreneurs who use technology to transform lives, our economy and where we're headed.
"The new numbers more than held their own...Four stars" - The Times of London
All of the Pixies dates on this tour will feature a brand new stage set and production, and will give the band an opportunity to not only debut brand new Pixies songs, but to offer the most wide-ranging concert set lists of Pixies music in the band's career.  As Black Francis told The Daily Beast, "I'm happy that we have new songs to play because playing only the old songs...you've already proven that.  You can try to do it better, but you're not really proving anything to anyone except that you can still do it."
"The Pixies brought just enough to the Bowery stage to remind devoted fans that their songwriting chops have hardly wavered and that the best may be yet to come." - Village Voice
With Fidlar (Jan. 15 - 29), Cults (Jan 31 - Feb. 11) and Best Coast (Feb. 13 - Mar. 1) providing support over the course of the tour, dates for Pixies' North American tour are as follows:

Upset share new single, "She's Gone"

UPSET SHARE NEW SINGLE, ""
ANNOUNCE TOUR DATES WITH SCREAMING FEMALES

DEBUT LP VIA DON GIOVANNI RECORDS

LISTEN TO "SHE'S GONE" VIA THE A.V. CLUB
Upset have shared the title track from their debut record, "", via The A.V. Club today.  In addition, they've also announced west coast tour dates with label-mates, Screaming Females and  for the album, due out 10/29 via New Jersey's Don Giovanni Records.
ABOUT UPSET:
For the past few years, Ali Koehler has been best known as the drummer of the pop group Best Coast and the noisy girl punk trio Vivian Girls. After her departure from Best Coast, Koehler decided to step up from behind the kit to front a band of her own, embracing her melodic punk-spirited songwriting impulses with Upset.  Joined by Patty Schemel (of Hole) on drums and Jennifer Prince on lead guitar and vocals, Upset will release its massively hooky debut record, She’s Gone, this fall.

With 12 songs in just under 30 minutes, it’s a pop-punk album that immediately sounds classic, full of unshakeable hooks and the sincerest of shouts. It is fitting that She’s Gone will see a release with Don Giovanni Records; the record could easily fit in the record collections of Ergs or Lemuria fans.  She’s Gone was recorded primarily at Koehler’s house in April of 2013 by Kyle Gilbride of Swearin’.

As a songwriter, Koehler draws on the snarky angst and punk simplicity of her previous bands, with a delivery that masks angry and cheeky lyrics with a sweet-sung and wide-eyed infliction.  She’s Gone opens with “Back To School,” conveying that sense of first-day anxieties and uncertainty that comes with a return to an old routine. “First day back’s a heart attack,” Koehler sings.  It’s an intro to the sort of personal and relatable lyrics she sings throughout, full of anxious introspection. “Game Over” (written and sung by Jenn Prince) is bored and angsty, channeling distant vox and 90s-indebted noise-pop guitars; “Never Wanna” is an urgent and impatient earworm. “I just don’t know what to do / I can’t stop thinking of you,” Koehler sings.

“Queen Frosteen” uses childlike, upbeat rhymes and a sticky chorus to set up her indictment of a friendship gone wrong. “When she sets the scene / it’s a sugarcoated fantasy,” she sings, in a way that’s so overly sugar-sweet, it almost sounds sarcastic.  “Queen Frosteen, my enemy / she’s everything and I'm nobody / Queen Frosteen, my enemy.”  The closing track sounds similarly burned and pissed about it. “This was a lesson learned / this is goodbye,” the band sings, girl-gang style. “That’s not what friends are for.”

She's Gone has moments of self-doubt and resonant angst (“I can’t remember feeling worse than this,” Koehler sings on “Oxfords and Wingtips”) but it has a sense of humor about it as well; “About Me” even starts with a giggle. It’s a sort of record that’s not afraid to have sincere open-book, downer moments, but doesn't take itself too seriously.Tour Dates11/15 - Seattle, WA @ Black Lodge *11/16 - Portland, OR @ The Know Bar *11/18 - San Jose, CA @ The Blank Club *11/19 - Oakland, CA @ 1-2-3-4 Go! Pure Bathing Culture are excited to share their new video for "," off their recently released full-length debut Moon Tides.  Directed by Hayley Morris (Iron and Wine's "Joy" video), the visuals are made  of stop-motion animation composed of stylized hand-made paper sculpted puppets and landscapes.  Says Morris, "I wanted to create a highly stylized world, a mix of delicate organic and geometric shapes. The video was created all in camera and animated frame by frame with hand-drawn projected animations."  The pervasive image in the video is that of a raven, which in some cultures is seen as the mediator between life and after-life, a traveler between worlds. Others see the raven as a trickster, a messenger, or even the creator of the world.  "Dream The Dare" employs this loaded character as a muse.  Morris explains: "I wanted these projections to further the life of the world, and to leave the viewer wondering whether the hypnotic patterns are of this world or how the Raven sees it."
Having backed folk rock revisionist Andy Cabic in Vetiver, New Yorkers Sarah Versprille and Daniel Hindman partnered up and moved West in 2011, settling in Portland, Oregon (Versprille also sings on Foxygen's latest LP and Hindman adds his sprawling guitar work to Damien Jurado's excellent Marqopa). Building off their past experiences as musical collaborators, in a short time the duo have created a sound that is undeniably their own: soaring synths, chiming keyboards, and shimmering electric guitars move in lockstep with bouncing drum machines. Sarah's crystalline voice floats on top of it all with divine purpose. It's a sound that looks back momentarily for inspiration -- Talk Talk, Prefab Sprout, Cocteau Twins -- but then fixes its gaze firmly on the present.      Tour Dates:10/10 - Visalia, CA - The Cellar Door10/12 - Tucson, AZ - Solar Culture10/13 - Albuquerque, NM - Low Spirits*10/14 - Phoenix, AZ - Rhythm Room*10/15 - San Diego, CA - The Void*10/16 - Los Angeles, CA - The Echo*10/18 - San Francisco, CA - The Chapel*10/19 - Davis, CA - Sophia's Thai Kitchen*10/21 - Eugene, OR - Cozmic Pizza*10/22 - Vancouver, BC - Electric Owl*10/23 - Seattle, WA - Chop Suey*10/24 - Portland, OR - Bunk Bar*10/25 - Boise, ID - Neurolux*10/26 - Salt Lake City, UT - Urban Lounge*10/27 - Denver, CO - Larimer Lounge*10/28 - Omaha, NE - Slowdown*10/29 - Des Moines, IA - Vaudeville Mews*10/30 - Minneapolis, MN - 7th St Entry*10/31 - Chicago, IL - Schuba's*11/1 - Ferndale, MI - The Loving Touch*11/2 - Toronto, ON - Silver Dollar Room*11/3 - Montreal, QC - Il Motore*11/4 - Winooski, VT - The Monkey House*11/5 - Cambridge, MA - TT The Bear's*11/6 - New Haven, CT - BAR*11/8 - New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom*11/9 - Pittsburgh, PA - Club Cafe11/11 - Cincinnati, OH - MOTR Pub11/12 - St Louis, MO - Old Rock House11/13 - Kansas City, MO - Record Bar11/15 - Missoula, MT - Top Hat

Hands Announce Fall Tour Dates With A Silent Film

Hands Announce Fall Tour Dates With A Silent Film Debut Album Synesthesia Out Now On Kill Rock Stars "Hands play the instruments that induce you to dance and hear
those sounds that make you want to feel it all." - Filter
"If you're a fan of Hot Chip or Tanlines, this is your band to  follow in 2013." - Stereogum
"Los Angeles outfit Hands are making it okay to dance again...Imagine Tanlines freebasing onPassion Pit; it's a high you'll want to ride again and again." - Consequence Of Sound Watch: "The Making of Synesthesia" video via Vimeo
Listen: "Trouble" via SoundCloud
After a successful tour supporting On And On and Electric Guest as part of the Red Bull Sound Select tour, Los Angeles-based indie rock band Hands are excited to get back on the road again this fall. In November, the band will be supporting A Silent Film on their upcoming tour. Hands will be playing shows in support of their debut full-length album, Synesthesia, out now on Kill Rock Stars
A relative newcomer to the LA scene, Hands began as a two-piece from Philadelphia before Halliday and Sweeney headed west and added the low and thump of Hess and Staniloff. The band made a mark on the scene immediately, quickly playing packed shows across the country including stops atSXSWCMJDeluna Fest and Los Angeles' Echo Park Rising. Hands' ability to win over fans with their feverish live show and dance-party-ready sound has already earned them opening spots for the likes of DeerhoofDeVotchKaFoster the People, WAVVES, Geographer, White Arrows, Maps and Atlases and Kimbra as well as playing shows to sold out crowds at venues across LA.
For now, Hands' graceful and danceable indie rock is still under the radar, as evidenced by their spot in  TIME Magazine's 11 Bands You Don't Know (But Should) List , but they are quickly rising to the surface, bringing their melodies and thumping beats with them.  Stereogum  recently said, "If you're a fan of Hot Chip or Tanlines, this is your band to follow in 2013." Over the past year, Hands has built a devoted following for their evolving palette of sounds, soaring melodies, and complex looping song structures. With overwhelming responses to first listens of the record and Hands hitting the road for most of 2013, surely this is the year that Hands will start to make waves.

Russian Circles premiere new track via Pitchfork

Russian Circles
premiere new track from forthcoming albumMemorial via Pitchfork

Listen to "1777" HERERussian Circles
Chicago trio Russian Circles premiere another new track from their forthcoming fifth album, Memorialtoday via Pitchfork. The epic tune "1777" is available to listen/share on  Pitchfork  or Soundcloud.

Rolling Stone also recently debuted the album's title track, featuring guest vocals by label (and tour) mate Chelsea Wolfe. Listen to "Memorial" HERERussian Circles previously shared the first track from the album via Pitchfork. Listen to the song "Deficit" HERE. (Soundcloud link HERE.) Check out cover art and track listing below.

Russian Circles hit the road in the EU and UK with Chelsea Wolfe next week. Both bands will play full headlining sets. Russian Circles will tour the US in early 2014. Please see complete dates below.

Perhaps the most immediately apparent characteristic of the fifth Russian Circles album, Memorial is its wide range of emotion. Vacillating from somber-yet-soaring melodies on one track to pummeling metal heft on the next, Memorial sounds like an album with split personalities.

Where one song showcases guitarist Mike Sullivan, drummer Dave Turncrantz and bassist/keyboardist Brian Cook's mastery of lush melancholic melody, the next exhibits their most abrasive underground metal leaning sound, with washed-out 16th-note riffs and crushing rhythms. The band's penchant for endless hooks remains a constant, but Memorial embodies their most dramatic ranges in tone.

"We've always tried to balance our metal-influenced sounds with more nuanced, pretty, orchestral elements," Cook says. "But this time, it's far more polarized in that the heavy parts are much more blown out and exaggerated while the pretty moments are far more restrained, delicate, and atmospheric." In the two years since Russian Circles released their landmark fourth album Empros, the Chicago trio toured worldwide nearly incessantly, encountering many heavy acts whose music seemed needlessly complicated. "We set out to make a straightforward, intense, heavy record," Cook explains. "We subconsciously gravitated toward darker and more somber sounds. We wanted to get away from the overtly flashy."

In search of such a streamlined sound, the trio focused on each individual song having its own emotional and musical characteristics. As such, Memorial almost feels like stages of grief. That notion might be aided by 1) the album's clever structuring, in which it ends in the same place as it starts, and 2) special guest vocalist Chelsea Wolfe lending her hauntingly somber vocals to the album closing title track.

Memorial was recorded at the illustrious Electrical Audio studio in Chicago with the band's longtime producer Brandon Curtis of The Secret Machines & Interpol who also helmed the band's two previous albums, Empros and Geneva.

Memorial will be available on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on October 29th, 2013.

Minor Alps (Juliana Hatfield + Matthew Caws) Debut New Song

MINOR ALPS (MATTHEW CAWS OF NADA SURF + JULIANA HATFIELD)SHARE NEW SONG "FAR FROM THE ROSES"
FROM FORTHCOMING FULL-LENGTH ALBUM GET THEREOUT OCTOBER 29TH ON BARSUK RECORDSPRE-ORDER NOW
ON TOUR THIS NOVEMBER
Minor Alps, the collaborative vision of Juliana Hatfield and Nada Surf's Matthew Caws, have unveiled "Far From The Roses", the latest song off the duo's forthcoming album Get There, out October 29th on Barsuk Records. This November the pair will embark upon a string of tour dates in support of the release, kicking off in Seattle at the Barsuk Records 15th Anniversary Show. Upcoming dates and early praise for Minor Alps below.
Stream "Far From The Roses" via SoundCloud or YouTube
Pre-Order Get There - barsuk.com/shop/bark139
"The pairing brings out the softer side Nada Surf sometimes delved into while reaching for something new entirely." - NPR Music
"...intricate and ambitious and very lovely." - Stereogum
"The album is appealingly mellow pop, with arpeggiated guitars, gentle electronics, and the occasional melotron. Mostly, though, it's about Caws and Hatfield's voices which sound pretty great together." -Brooklyn Vegan
Over the last two decades, both Caws and Hatfield have carved out long-lasting - and strikingly independent - careers within a dependably fickle music business, Caws with his now 20-year-old New York City group Nada Surf, and Hatfield with the Boston-reared Blake Babies, the Juliana Hatfield Three, Some Girls, as well as a number of releases under her own name.
Hatfield and Caws not only share lead vocals and co-writing credit on each of the eleven songs that comprise Get There; aside from some drumming and programming by Parker Kindred (Jeff Buckley, Antony and the Johnsons) and Chris Egan (Solange, Computer Magic), the pair plays every instrument and conjures every sound - from primitive electronic dub pulse ('Buried Plans')-- to straight-up rock hook ('I Don't Know What To Do With My Hands') to stripped-down electric guitar punch ('Mixed Feelings') to eerie trance-allure ('Radio Static') to hypnotic guitar drone ('Waiting For You').
It's not just the timbre of the voices and the shared vision of their musical explorations, but the emotional tone of their songs and lyrics that blends so seamlessly. Their attraction to themes of restless solitude and constant longing have always been a compelling part of their individual repertoires, and Minor Alps expresses an ageless existential yearning tempered by hard-fought wisdom, maturity, or maybe just acceptance of certain eternal truths. As they ruefully admit in 'If I Wanted Trouble,' "This growing up never ends/ The same mistakes come back again..."
