White Hinterland Releases New Album Today

White Hinterland has released her stunning new album Baby today, via Dead Oceans. Already capturing the attention of Pitchfork, SPIN, Stereogum and WNYC, Rolling Stone has praised the record, noting "Dienel's considerable vocal skills hold it all together: She's got a Mary Poppins-size bag of tricks, singing in operatic quivers, howling yelps, haunting harmonic layers and even full-on vocal fry without showing any seams."This impressive third offering from talented artist and producer Casey Dienel, was recently spotlighted by WNYC, who raves, "White Hinterland doubles down on the experimental electronic flourishes, and fizzy, dance-ready hooks. Four years after her profile-raising release,Kairos (2010), Casey Dienel aka White Hinterland has taken the gloves off and knuckled down to produce a deep, dark, heady mix of songs. After two and a half years of writing and recording material in Montreal and Portland, OR, Dienel moved back in to her family home in Scituate, MA. There she forged a new aesthetic, spending five months building her own studio, The Glades, in her parents' basement - the same space where she practiced piano and vocal lessons as a child. Determined to helm her new album, Dienel spent months studying production, poring over YouTube tutorials about Protools, mic'ing techniques and other minutiae.Armed with this self-taught skill and her new studio, Dienel set forth to subvert the existing power structure of male producer as svengali and female artist as figurehead (see: Billy Corgan/Courtney Love, Timbaland/Aaliyah, Phil Spector/The Ronettes). She created her own, new path on Baby, which showcases her as a singer/songwriter/producer who has only become bolder and more resolute over the past three-plus years. Calling in her friends as pinch hitters, Dienel worked acclaimed musicians Sean Carey (Bon Iver, S. Carey), Neal Morgan (Joanna Newsom, Bill Callahan), and Cole Kamen-Green (Beyoncé).On her early records, Dienel projected her fears and fantasies onto imaginary characters, role play, and lush atmospherics. If Kairos was a work of atmosphere, a forty-minute-long reverie without any narrative, thenBaby sits at the opposite end of that spectrum. Baby is about song craft. It is forceful, rooted in the physicality of the voice, percussion and piano, and it is about getting straight to the point, which Dienel does on the very first song. Lead-off track "Wait Until Dark" begins a capella, just Dienel's voice in a reverberant room. That voice is capable of carrying a significant melodic and emotional load, and on Baby's title track it swoops dramatically from an edge-of-cliff howl to her crystalline upper-range, then back down to a soulful growl. By the end of the song, sounding exhausted but ready to push forward, Dienel again drops away the arrangement, leaving just her voice, stripped bare and pushed to the very edges of its significant range, "Say I'll take a sip, but I can't leave a drop," she repeats over and over: "Is this my weakness?" These audacious choices were intentional, she says, "As producer I made the call to scale back the reverb, saw off the synths and seat my voice front and center for the first time. It was not accidental."The themes explored on Baby are universal but it is Dienel's singular reaction to what life has thrown in front of her that makes the record unique. "I would say the themes of this record to me are personal agency, strength, growth, determination," she posits. "And to get those things is usually fucking terrifying and comes with casualties and loss." Call it Millennial Anxiety, if you like. "White Noise" erupts over alcoholism and abandonment while "Wait Until Dark" and "Sickle No Sword" are paeans to violence and breaches of security. On the unsparing "Dry Mind" mention is made of "No Plan B, no B.A., No Exit." "Live With You" and "Baby" take aim at both the narrator and object of desire. "David" describes the dangerous lotus-eater effect of nostalgia, both a eulogy to the past and a celebration of life even at its most brutal. "No Devotion" asks the question of nature vs. nurture. Do we inherit these behaviors or are they learned over the time? And can we unlearn them?Baby's production is marked by extremes, and it continually returns to the piano, Dienel's first love. Where her earlier work occasionally showcased a strong Joni Mitchell influence, on new songs like "David" she finds herself in Fiona Apple territory. "Whatever you say, don't say we we're lucky. Whatever you do, don't call it chance," she croons with a mixture of regret and relief. "That's like saying it was an accident when I was running at you with my sharpest knife." Her lifelong love of R&B and gospel also comes to the fore, these resonant styles complement and contrast the sharp dynamic shifts, booming drums, and blasts of brass. Consider "Ring the Bell": her confident vocals buoy the song as it grows larger and more forthright, winding itself up into a maelstrom that feels like the seasick experience of falling head over heels in love. On "Metronome," Baby's centerpiece and most assertive track, she declares, "All day long I'm a boss." She's not asking for someone to serve as a steadying influence, but instead requiring that it's necessary to keep up withher.Dienel's Baby is both the pop cliché of "Oooh, Baby Baby" and Dienel telling herself to stop being such a baby. It is a word of both endearment and dismissal, repurposed to serve her needs. It's a cathartic embrace of hardship, the crucible which can forge the strongest steel. It is the past three years of her life distilled into song: joy, heartbreak, frustration, longing, disappointment, anger, and loss accumulated, poured out and reborn in this new, unflinching release.  London’s Woman’s Hour today announce their debut album Conversations will be released through Secretly Canadian on July 15th. In celebration of the announcement, the band have also released a stream of their new single and album’s title track. “Conversations” offers a different facet of Woman’s Hour with its propulsive rhythm and intimate vocals that mirror the song’s lyrics about the secret world and language every couple develops. When the sun sets, kaleidoscopic lights and psychedelic visuals will adorn the stages, adding an aesthetic accompaniment to the mind-expanding aural delights, which will run all night.Blazing a trail from the 60s right through to today with unparalleled status, Hawkwind are spiritual and sonic godfathers, whose influence has permeated through hundreds of bands over five decades, not least many of those sharing the bill at Reverence. Formed  in 1969, their trademark single ‘Silver Machine’ was a huge hit that brought the band to the attention of the wider public, with albums like ‘Warrior On The Edge Of Time’ and ‘Masters Of The Universe’  lauded as classics.Joining them at the top of the bill and bringing their own brand of heavy cerebral stoner/doom to the stage are Electric Wizard - writers of some of the most important records of the genre like ‘Come My Fanatics’, ‘Dopethrone’ and ‘Black Masses’.The bone-crushingly heavy Red Fang fit perfectly with the reverence ethos, along with ambient doom collective Crippled Black Phoenix as bands that have gained cult following for refusing to compromise – an attitude also held by Reverence itself. More talent comes from local heroes, Mao Morta, arguably one of the most important Portuguese alternative rock bands on the scene, with a career spanning back to the mid-eighties. If all that wasn’t enticing enough, Psychic TV, the respected experimental art and music group fronted by pioneer and visionary Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, will be making an appearance. Not to mention Oxford shoegazers Swervedriver who split in the late 90s only to be met with huge success when they re-emerged in 2008.Reverence’s powerful line-up is strengthened by their choice to include some of the biggest names in the current shoegaze and garage revival such as dark garage rockers The Wytches, ambient kosmische drone combo Telescopes and motorik spacerockersWhite Hills.Many bands that have secured positions on the prestigious line-up have highly respectable followings in their own right, in particular the MBV-style Ringo Deathstarr (who inadvertently  got the festival kick-started by inspiring the partnership of Cartaxo Sessions and Club AC30), along with baggy space rockers Exit Calm, psychedelic maestros The Oscillation (featuring Fanfarlo’s drummer) and sludgers Asimov.The latest batch of acts added to the bill include Pitchfork’s favourite spooky campfire folk band Woods  and Moon Duo, initially seen by many as a side project to co-founder Ripley Jonson’s more established outfit Wooden Shjips. However, along with co-conspirator Sanae Yamada, they’ve gone on to produce a highly acclaimed body of work, elevating them to the upper echelons of the new psychedelia movement.Elsewhere Process of Guilt bring their own brand of doom music from nearby Evora and Italian collective Sonic Jesus showcase their distinctive hypnotic sounds, drenched in sixties inspired psychedelia and shoegaze nuance. Black Leather and One of These Days & Thee Heavy Random Tone Colour Lab complete the just added line-up.  Aiming to capture the spirit of early, pre-branded and pre-corporate events, Reverence harks back to the golden age of free spirited festivals, where the music comes first.The choice of said music makes it abundantly clear that Reverence is a festival with integrity, that isn’t a box-ticking exercise where bands from every genre are booked in a ‘throw it all against the wall and see what sticks’ approach, but a labour of love.The festival features a variety of cult bands that have been bought together not purely for profit, but because a group of promoters wanted to bring something to Valada for the fans.  They’re pulling together what they see as the best bands from all over the world, because it’s what the fans want to see and, being fans themselves, what they want to see themselves.The event takes place in the relaxed surroundings of Parque de Merendas, which runs along the banks of the Tejo river and includes a fluvial beach, picnic areas and coffee shops. Traditional Portuguese food and drinks including vegan and vegetarian will be available, as well as camping facilities adjacent to the festival site with toilets and showers.Valada is a small picturesque village, famous for agriculture and wine production. Located approximately 60kms inland from Lisbon and 550km from Madrid, easily accessible via train from Lisbon where shuttle buses will be running from nearest station Reguengo to the festival site.[image error]

During the 2008  I'm New Here  sessions at New York's Looking Glass studios, Scott-Heron recorded stripped-down, new versions of some of his greatest songs. Accompanying himself on piano and with no overdubs, this is  Nothing New , a unique musical insight into one of the most profound recording artists of our time. It will be available only on 12" vinyl, limited to 3000 copies, and released exclusively for Record Store Day on April 19, 2014.

Designed as an immersive companion piece to the original 1973 album, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, listeners are encouraged to listen to the new LIPS album while listening to  DARK SIDE  at the same time.  FLAMING SIDE OF THE MOON  was also carefully crafted to sync up perfectly with the 1939 film,  THE WIZARD OF OZ . For ideal listening conditions, fans are encouraged to seek out the original Alan Parsons' engineered quadraphonic LP mix of  DARK SIDE , but it will work with the album on any format. Available now through all participating digital outlets.

As previously announced, a strictly limited edition 100 vinyl copies will be distributed to friends and family of THE FLAMING LIPS.

LIARS  (Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross) NEW VIDEO for  “Mess On A Mission” was co-produced by  Urban Outfitters  as part of their  Video Series  and directed by Luis Cervéro(of CANADA).  Shot in the band’s hometown Los Angeles over the course of 12 hours, Luis’ captured the Liars’ movements from four different angles against a green screen filled as the band fights off everything from monsters to sacrificial tribal rituals. Tracking this unique partnership, Angus kept a video diary that documents why Luis’ video treatment “immediately stood out” explaining, “he was really fascinated by the idea, that nowadays, in filmmaking, you can no longer tell what’s real and what isn’t.”  We’ll let you decide for yourself what is “fact” and what is “fiction”—be sure to keep an eye out for Julian’s parents in the meantime!

The Flaming Lips 1st EP  will be available as a limited edition 12-inch on green vinyl and signed by Coyne. The last time this recording was available on vinyl was in 1986. It was originally recorded in two sessions at Benson Sound in 1984 and released on the group's homemade label Lovely Sorts of Death Records. This edition has been remastered by LIPS bassist Michael Ivins and given a reimagined cover by freak artist Charlie Immer.

Honeyblood's self-titled record has a new release date of July 15th and will be released via FatCat. Recorded at legendary producer Peter Katis' Tarquin Studios (The National, Interpol) in ten days last November, Honeybloodis an accomplished and delightfully fierce record.
