James Supercave's New EP The Afternoon Out Today

James Supercave's New EP The Afternoon Out TodayStreaming Now Via SoundCloud

Los Angeles based band James Supercave have a new four-song EP out today titled The Afternoon, via Hit City U.S.A. The Afternoon is the LA quintet's first official release. The band's production is engrossing with a sultry delivery, a hybrid of guitar solos and analogue synths, like finding David Bowie locked into a groove above J-Dilla beats. As themes run the gamut with a casually apocalyptic smirk and cool, quick wit, the songs escalate naturally to epic scales, impressive and moving. The Afternoon EP is streaming right now over at SoundCloud. Please feel free to share and post this public stream, and purchase the EP at the links below:

You can get a taste of the EP by watching the inventive and charming video of song "Old Robot" or listening to much buzzed-about song "The Right Thing" at the links below:

"The Right Thing" has gotten a ton of acclaim on the blogosphere, with Buzzbands LA calling it "a compositionally dextrous thrill ride of indie rock and electro sprinkled with a little bit of Ziggy's stardust and Pastor's don't-try-this-at-home falsetto. Finally, some art-rockers that live up to the name art-rockers." Impose Magazine said "This is that progressive, big time sweeping rock sound that your dad always told you, and swore up and down that folks these days never understand." KCRW's Jason Bentley listed the band as one of the top '5 LA Musicians to watch in 2014' after a demo leaked onto local airwaves.
The band will be supporting the release of The Afternoon with a run of spring tour dates with Warpaint. For the full itinerary, please see below.

The Baseball Project's 3rd Released Today on Yep Roc

The Baseball Project's 3rd Released Today on Yep Roc
Members of R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows, The Dream Syndicate, Zuzu's Petals come together for third time to celebrate our national pastime

The Baseball Project's third album 3rd is out today via Yep Roc Records. The record features 17 swings at the national pastime with subjects including Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron and some of the true characters of the game such as once-beloved fallen star of the Mets and Phillies Lenny Dykstra, and acid-tripping pitcher Dock Ellis (this time recounting his attempt to bean every player in the Reds lineup). Accompanying the album is a new bio written by award-winning journalist Dan Epstein, author of Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America in the Swinging '70s.
The Baseball Project was formed in 2007 by Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows, The Minus 5, R.E.M.) and Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3). The endeavor began as a way for a couple of fans with a shared musical vision to pay tribute to our national pastime. Since then, The Baseball Project has blossomed into a full-fledged, much-loved band in its own right. Zuzu's Petals/Steve Wynn drummer Linda Pitmon and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck and Mike Mills fill out the official roster of The Baseball Project, an all-star squad whose following and creativity has grown steadily with each release and tour.
The Baseball Project will tour the U.S. this summer, performing as they are uniquely able, at rock clubs and baseball parks alike. Tour dates will be announced soon at thebaseballproject.net.

bump & grind to Sylvan Esso's new "Coffee" video

SYLVAN ESSO DROP VIDEO FOR "COFFEE" VIA NOISEY
ANNOUNCE US TOUR WITH TUNE-YARDS  COFFEE / DRESS 12" OUT TODAY  SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM OUT MAY 13 ON PARTISAN     WATCH: Brush up on your dance moves to the official video for "Coffee"  via Noisey or YouTube  LISTEN: "Coffee," which hit #1 on HypeMachine its first week online, via Soundcloud     "[Sylvan Esso] could sound like deliberately primitive 1970s electro in one song and glitchy, abstract techno in another behind Amelia Meath's teasing voice" - The New York Times
"Sleek, experimental and infectious" -NPR (one of their favorite discoveries of SXSW)
"Dance music's take on a folk ballad, merging drafty vocal interludes with a groovy pulse and manic jolts of sound" -Pitchfork

"Sure to woo lovers of folk and electronic music alike through calming, compelling vocals and spellbinding loops and beats." - SPIN          Sylvan Esso are excited to debut their new video for "Coffee," directed by Dan Huiting.  Filled with swirling colors to match the song's eclectic beats, we are taken from an Appalachian contra-dance, to a proper Durham, NC house party, and finally to a 1950s-era sock-hop that explodes with a sexy, synchronized dance routine drenched in neon. All the rug-cutting and boogie-ing in the video echo the band's sizzling live performances, which were extensively praised at SXSW by New York Times, NPR, The Atlantic, People Magazine, The Hairpin, and more.

Following a run of European tour dates with likes of Wye Oak, Tycho, and tUnE-yArDs, Sylvan Esso will embark on a US tour in May, again supporting tUnE-yArDs.  They will play major US markets including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, and NYC, and the full list of dates can be found below.

Sylvan Esso was not meant to be a band. Rather, Amelia Meath had written a song called "Play It Right" and sung it with her trio Mountain Man. She'd met Nick Sanborn, an electronic producer working under the name Made of Oak, in passing on a shared bill in a small club somewhere. She asked him to scramble it, to render her work his way. He did the obligatory remix, but he sensed that there was something more important here than a one-time handoff: Of all the songs Sanborn had ever recast, this was the first time he felt he'd added to the raw material without subtracting from it, as though, across the unseen wires of online file exchange, he'd found his new collaborator without even looking.
Sylvan Esso became a band. A year later, their self-titled debut-a collection of vivid addictions concerning suffering and love, darkness and deliverance-arrives as a necessary pop balm, an album stuffed with songs that don't suffer the longstanding complications of that term.
These 10 tunes were realized and recorded in Sanborn's Durham bedroom during the last year, an impressive feat considering the layers of activity and effects that populate them-the dizzyingly crisscrossed harmonies of "Play it Right," the gorgeously incongruous elements of "Wolf," the surreptitiously minimalist momentum of "HSKT." Sanborn's production is fully modern and wonderfully active. He enlists obliterating dubstep stutters and crisp electropop pulses, hazy electrostatic breezes and epinephrine dancefloor turnarounds.
But this isn't a workout in production skills or a demonstration of electronic erudition. Instead, his music syncs seamlessly with Meath's melodies, so that the respective words and beats become a string of ready-to-play singles. The irrepressible "Hey Mami" webs handclaps and harmonies around a flood of bass, a strangely perfect canvas for a tale of dudes hollering at neighborhood tail (and, finally, finding the chivalry not to do so).
"Coffee" sparkles and quakes, patiently rising from a muted spell of seasonal affective disorder to a sweet rupture of schoolyard glee. These pop cuts condescend neither to their audience nor their makers. They are sophisticated, but with none of the arrogance that can imply; they are addictive, but with none of the banality that can entail. There is sensuality and sexual depravity, homesickness and wanderlust, nostalgia and immediacy.
Sylvan Esso represents the fulfillment of their fortuitous encounter by, once again, linking parts that too often come stripped of their counterparts. Here, motion comes with melody. Words come with ideas. And above all, pop comes back with candor.

Doves' Jimi Goodwin releases Odludek on Heavenly Recordings

Jimi Goodwin releases Odludek
DOVES' frontman makes debut on Heavenly Recordings

LISTEN: "Terracotta Warrior (Andy Votel Remix)"LISTEN:  "Oh! Whiskey"
"Goodwin reveals more tricks than his long-proven knack for writing anthemic hooks."Consequence of Sound
"A revelation. Not because it is a radical departure from Doves, though. On the contrary, it reveals Goodwin to have been the primary creator of Doves' sound and songwriting style."PopMatters Riff Report
Having spent the last decade and a bit fronting now much-missed Manchester band Doves, Jimi Goodwin was a little touch nervous about making music under his own name. He needn't have worried. Bouncing joyfully from genre to genre,  Odludek  has all the thrill and excitement of an artist's debut record whilst also displaying the wealth of experience of someone who's spent the last two decades making inspirational music. Impossible to pigeonhole, properly addictive and hook heavy,  Odludek  is the first great record of 2014.
Jimi Goodwin on  Odludek : "I wanted to make this mad mixtape: the kind you'd pass back and forth with your mates; eclectic as fuck. That's the way we've all discovered music over the years isn't it? We join our own dots to make it all make sense. As I got into making the record, it felt like I was proving something to myself, making a point that I could do all this on my own. You know - I can play bass, I can play guitar, I can orchestrate. As the methods changed, the original concept stayed intact. It's me, powering through ideas, kapow kapow, no pause for breath. It's not trying to be wilfully eclectic; it's just a reflection of how I schizophrenically devour music."
Odludek  is co-produced by Jimi and Dan Austin (Doves, Pixies) and features tracks co-written with Elbow's Guy Garvey and one, "Didsbury Girl," with Simon Dine (who collaborated with Paul Weller on his recent run of albums).

White Hinterland's New Album 'Baby' Out Next Week

White HinterlandPhoto Credit: Derrick BelchamWhite Hinterland's standout new album, Baby, is coming out next week on Dead Oceans and is streaming in full this week on WNYC. Praising the album, WNYC describes White Hinterland's third album as a musical transformation - "from skillful and sweet songwriter to a powerful, emotional singer, and a producer with confidence in her craft." Click Here To Stream Baby On WNYC Stereogum praised the latest offering, noting that "Casey Dienel aka White Hinterland's new album Baby is poised to display her transformation from a more introverted singer performing over drones and glitchy beats to her own best producer soaring over bombastic experimental R&B." SPIN went on to describe Dienel's sound as a "powerful voice coming through in melismatic waves." With an extensive North American tour kicking off next week to coincide with the release of Baby, check out all of the upcoming dates below.Biography / Freedom often begins from terror, and White Hinterland's third album, Baby, addresses the fear that comes along with breaking out of established rituals, or leaving a comfortable place, and striking out into the unknown. Four years after her profile-raising release,Kairos (2010), Casey Dienel aka White Hinterland has taken the gloves off and knuckled down to produce a deep, dark, heady mix of songs. After two and a half years of writing and recording material in Montreal and Portland, OR, Dienel moved back in to her family home in Scituate, MA. There she forged a new aesthetic, spending five months building her own studio, The Glades, in her parents' basement - the same space where she practiced piano and vocal lessons as a child. Determined to helm her new album, Dienel spent months studying production, poring over YouTube tutorials about Protools, mic'ing techniques and other minutiae.Armed with this self-taught skill and her new studio, Dienel set forth to subvert the existing power structure of male producer as svengali and female artist as figurehead (see: Billy Corgan/Courtney Love, Timbaland/Aaliyah, Phil Spector/The Ronettes). She created her own, new path on Baby, which showcases her as a singer/songwriter/producer who has only become bolder and more resolute over the past three-plus years. Calling in her friends as pinch hitters, Dienel worked acclaimed musicians Sean Carey (Bon Iver, S. Carey), Neal Morgan (Joanna Newsom, Bill Callahan), and Cole Kamen-Green (Beyoncé).On her early records, Dienel projected her fears and fantasies onto imaginary characters, role play, and lush atmospherics. If Kairos was a work of atmosphere, a forty-minute-long reverie without any narrative, thenBaby sits at the opposite end of that spectrum. Baby is about song craft. It is forceful, rooted in the physicality of the voice, percussion and piano, and it is about getting straight to the point, which Dienel does on the very first song. Lead-off track "Wait Until Dark" begins a capella, just Dienel's voice in a reverberant room. That voice is capable of carrying a significant melodic and emotional load, and on Baby's title track it swoops dramatically from an edge-of-cliff howl to her crystalline upper-range, then back down to a soulful growl. By the end of the song, sounding exhausted but ready to push forward, Dienel again drops away the arrangement, leaving just her voice, stripped bare and pushed to the very edges of its significant range, "Say I'll take a sip, but I can't leave a drop," she repeats over and over: "Is this my weakness?" These audacious choices were intentional, she says, "As producer I made the call to scale back the reverb, saw off the synths and seat my voice front and center for the first time. It was not accidental."The themes explored on Baby are universal but it is Dienel's singular reaction to what life has thrown in front of her that makes the record unique. "I would say the themes of this record to me are personal agency, strength, growth, determination," she posits. "And to get those things is usually fucking terrifying and comes with casualties and loss." Call it Millennial Anxiety, if you like. "White Noise" erupts over alcoholism and abandonment while "Wait Until Dark" and "Sickle No Sword" are paeans to violence and breaches of security. On the unsparing "Dry Mind" mention is made of "No Plan B, no B.A., No Exit." "Live With You" and "Baby" take aim at both the narrator and object of desire. "David" describes the dangerous lotus-eater effect of nostalgia, both a eulogy to the past and a celebration of life even at its most brutal. "No Devotion" asks the question of nature vs. nurture. Do we inherit these behaviors or are they learned over the time? And can we unlearn them?Baby's production is marked by extremes, and it continually returns to the piano, Dienel's first love. Where her earlier work occasionally showcased a strong Joni Mitchell influence, on new songs like "David" she finds herself in Fiona Apple territory. "Whatever you say, don't say we we're lucky. Whatever you do, don't call it chance," she croons with a mixture of regret and relief. "That's like saying it was an accident when I was running at you with my sharpest knife." Her lifelong love of R&B and gospel also comes to the fore, these resonant styles complement and contrast the sharp dynamic shifts, booming drums, and blasts of brass. Consider "Ring the Bell": her confident vocals buoy the song as it grows larger and more forthright, winding itself up into a maelstrom that feels like the seasick experience of falling head over heels in love. On "Metronome," Baby's centerpiece and most assertive track, she declares, "All day long I'm a boss." She's not asking for someone to serve as a steadying influence, but instead requiring that it's necessary to keep up withher.Dienel's Baby is both the pop cliché of "Oooh, Baby Baby" and Dienel telling herself to stop being such a baby. It is a word of both endearment and dismissal, repurposed to serve her needs. It's a cathartic embrace of hardship, the crucible which can forge the strongest steel. It is the past three years of her life distilled into song: joy, heartbreak, frustration, longing, disappointment, anger, and loss accumulated, poured out and reborn in this new, unflinching release. French Horn Rebellion are Robert and David Perlick-Molinari, two brothers born and bred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, currently residing in Brooklyn, NY. After telling the conductor that Mahler isn’t fun anymore he asked his bassoon-toting brother, David to join with him. And so it was, a French Horn Rebellion began.Since then, the boys have travelled 5 continents with French horn slung over their back, doing shows with MGMT, Yelle, Cut Copy, and others along the way. Deer Tick announce Record Store Day exclusive 7"

DEER TICK TO RELEASE EEL BOWEL 7"   EXCLUSIVELY FOR RECORD STORE DAY ON APRIL 19       ON TOUR THIS SPRING WITH THE HOLD STEADY, LANGHORNE SLIM  NEGATIVITY OUT NOW    WATCH: Video for "Big House" via YouTube
"Few parties in indie rock do ragged insight more naturally than Deer Tick, and on
Negativity the band hits a winning stride" -New York Times

"The group's most ambitious and carefully crafted release yet" -Wall Street Journal

"If [John McCauley] gets personal, he's not self-indulgent. He's just a bruised craftsman, impressively plying his trade" -Rolling Stone

 Side A: 1. Bus Stop
Side B: 1. Denver
To celebrate Record Store Day, Deer Tick is excited to announce the release of Eel Bowel, an exclusive 7" coming out on April 19, 2014.  The 7" is limited to 2,000 copies and includes two previously unreleased tracks that were recorded during the Negativity (2013) sessions.
This spring, Deer Tick will join forces with The Hold Steady to bring a serious dose of sweaty rock 'n roll to fans across the country throughout April. Kicking off in Boston, MA on April 17th, the tour will make stops throughout the East Coast and Midwest, culminating on April 30th in Dallas. Deer Tick will continue throughout the Southwest and the South following the Hold Steady tour, linking up with Langhorne Slim for dates in May.  The full list of dates is below.
John McCauley and Deer Tick have long walked a tightwire between total despair and fractured resilience, but Negativity represents a heroic leap forward on virtually all fronts for the Providence, Rhode Island-based band. Recorded earlier this year in Portland, Oregon with legendary producer/musician Steve Berlin (The Blasters, Los Lobos, and last year's McCauley side project, Diamond Rugs), the album - Deer Tick's fifth full-length studio release, and follow-up to 2011's acclaimed Divine Providence - is McCauley's most personal work thus far as well as the band's most undeniable and universal, their famously freewheeling musical approach refined here into a gloriously cohesive whole.

Negativity was penned over the course of a genuinely eventful 2012, an annus horribilus in which McCauley's father pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy and tax fraud, ultimately leading to a prison sentence. As if that weren't enough, McCauley's wedding engagement collapsed under the weight of his own excessive behavior and impossible lifestyle. Like any true artist, McCauley channeled his anger, sadness, and regret into his work, resulting in what can be safely declared his finest collection of songs to date, impassioned and interior and increasingly mature, both as expression of emotion as well as pure unadulterated songcraft.

Since releasing their sixth critically acclaimed full length ‘The Take Off and Landing of Everything’ last week, the Manchester five-piece has made an impressive Billboard Chart debut by entering at #1 on the Heatseekers Chart and reaching their highest ever Top 200 chart positioning in the U.S, entering at #109 and currently sitting at #83 in week two. Despite selling more than 2 million albums prior to this release, the band also reached #1 for the first time ever in their native United Kingdom last week.

‘The Take Off and Landing of Everything’ is now available on  iTunes Amazon (CDDeluxeVinyl Spotify , Google Play  and in all good retail stores across North America.

The lead single from their current full-length album, is the powerful New York Morning, an ode to New York City, with lyrics partly inspired by chief lyricist and front-man Guy Garvey’s time spent writing and “people watching” in Brooklyn and Manhattan. He recently told The Independent (UK) how a press conference that John Lennon held (before he left the UK for good) also motivated him to write the track, “Why wouldn’t you go to New York?” Lennon enthusiastically asked the press. “Every nation on Earth is represented, all getting along – it’s the modern Rome. Besides, they’re nice to Yoko”.

In response to the song, Yoko recently responded to the lyrical observation with a  note to the band , thanking them, also noting “For John, he always wanted to come and live in this city, ever since he saw Bob Dylan on the famous album cover…” She finishes with a warm “Have a great time in New York. We loved it.” The band will be performing in New York City to a sold out crowd at Webster Hall on May 16, and will be making numerous stops across North American the same month.

In other news, this past weekend the band were featured on the prestigious NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturdaywith Scott Simon, with a delightful interview with front-man Guy Garvey and bass player Pete Turner. Listen to the broadcast which features tracks from ‘The Take Off and Landing of Everything’ here.

“The songs on their sixth studio set unfurl languidly, in delicate slow motion. This is stately, gentlemanly music—the sound of aging gracefully.” – FILTER Magazine

“It’s that refusal to paint in a single shade that makes The Take Off… such a fully formed listen from front to back. Garvey and the other members of Elbow have always been craftsmen, focused more on finer details than immediate gratification.” – PASTE Magazine

“Midlife crises have seldom been so beautifully documented than those on Elbow’s sixth studio album.” -PopMatters

“A work of faultless skill and assured sophistication, The Take Off and Landing of Everything positions Elbow as one of the most quietly ambitious and rewarding acts of our generation.” – No Ripcord

'The Take Off and Landing of Everything' is available now on:
