Braid Announces First New Album In 16 Years Titled "No Coast"
BRAID TO RELEASE FIRST FULL-LENGTH STUDIO ALBUM IN 16 YEARS TITLED NO COAST
SUMMER TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED
NO COAST IN STORES AND ONLINE VIA TOPSHELF RECORDS ON TUESDAY, JULY 8

Topshelf Records and seminal '90s indie-rock band Braid are pleased to announce the band's first full-length studio album in 16 years titled No Coast . Being released on Tuesday,July 8, No Coast was produced byWill Yip and contains 12 of the most technically and lyrically creative songs ever penned by the Champaign-Urbana, IL- based quartet. Featuring a rousing collection of textures, as well as the combined signature vocals provided by guitarists Bob Nanna and Chris Broach, No Coast presents itself as the fitting follow-up to the career defining, 1998 indie-rock classic Frame & Canvas .
Since its inception in 1993, Braid released a number of compilation songs, 7" material and full-length albums that are still regarded as indie-rock benchmarks. 1998 was the defining year for Braid. The band played almost 200 shows that year, toured Europe twice (first with The Get Up Kids then with Burning Airlines), and Polyvinyl Record Co. released Frame & Canvas, the quintessential Braid album, recorded and produced at DC's Inner Ear studios with J. Robbins. The record was released in April 1998 and met with more success than neither Braid, nor Polyvinyl, had ever imagined.
By early 1999, Braid was ready for a break and, ultimately, ended up deciding to call it quits. The last five days of the band were captured by the Bifocal-directed Killing A Camera documentary. Nearly a year later, Damon, Todd and Bob emerged as Hey Mercedes with some additional friends while Chris went on to start The Firebird Band and Lucid Records.
In mid-2010 the members of Braid - Chris Broach (guitar/vocals), Bob Nanna (guitar/vocals), Todd Bell (bass), and Damon Atkinson (drums) - discussed the possibility of working on a new release as well as performing a number of reunion shows that eventually led to their Closer To Closed EP and their Frame & Canvas tour in 2012 where they performed the album front-to-back in addition to a number of fan favorites. This burst of activity was a welcome return for the band that's also made fans excited for what was possibly next beyond the release and brief stint.
Now in 2014, Braid has returned with a fresh set of material on No Coast that is more of a rebirth of the band rather than a simple reunion. "I think we feel like we want this to be an introduction to Braid more than a follow-up to previous material," Chris Broach said. "We wanted to capture the spirit and dynamic tension that comes from having two guys up front that have a lot to say and a rhythm section that helps shape the songs. We spent a lot of time looking to where we could give each instrument its own space on the record - everything has its place, and its very deliberate."
"The drive has always been there to create new, exciting material that would speak to all of our fans, old and new," Bob Nanna adds. "We're excited with how the record turned out and look forward to Braid's busy future."
Braid will be making the following appearances throughout the summer. Tour dates below.

To celebrate their US tour TOY have released the Julian Hand directed video for 'As We Turn'."The points of reference for the As We Turn video came mostly from early animations we'd seen. Mary Ellen Bute's first color film Synchromy No.4 'Escape' from 1938 was an influence as well as some John Whitney footage. Both use unusual early techniques but achieve something otherworldly and I think that's what we wanted to try and do. Julian Hand also brought in the idea of using chromotropes which are 19th century kaleidoscopic slides which you wind so they turn. Henri Georges-Clouzot's unfinished film "L'enfer" was another reference." --Panda, TOY

TOY have quickly established a sound that is as modernistic as it is faithful to the spirit of psychedelia of decades past, marrying sophisticated chord progressions with a cornucopia of effects, enigmatic lyricism and driving Motorik rhythms.Their sophomore record Join The Dots is out now via Heavenly Recordings. The band admit to enjoying playing late at night to people in altered states, and in turn the tracks are frequently altered: instrumental sections in particular are structured freely, enabling the band to exploit the bleed and feedback of each venue to produce endless variations of the same songs. As with their debut, Join The Dots was recorded mostly live with Dan Carey at the helm, although increased studio time has enabled the band to experiment more with Carey's laboratory of effects and pre-amps, and embellish the tracks with overdubs. The album is both a companion to and extension of the electric blueprint plotted out on TOY, filled as it is with increasingly unpredictable, illuminating sonic ideas and songs that shift and transform with seemingly effortless intricacy.TOY are: Tom Dougall (vocals / guitar), Dominic O'Dair (guitars), Maxim Barron (bass / vocals), Alejandra Diez (synths / modulations) & Charlie Salvidge (drums / vocals).

Listen to Nikki Lane's New Album "All Or Nothin'" via NPR
Listen to Nikki Lane's New LP All Or Nothin' via NPR First Listen

All Or Nothin’ Out May 6th via New West Records
Listen Share “Seein’ Double” via Elle.com
Currently on Tour with The Whigs; Old 97's Tour Kicks Off May 5th
Hailed for her “bold, idiosyncratic sound,” NPR has selected Nikki Lane’s forthcoming sophomore album, All Or Nothin’ for a coveted First Listen, joining the likes of Dolly Parton and Lykke Li for this week’s selection. The record, produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and out May 6 on New West Records, is streaming in full at NPR.org who exclaimed: “The effect never feels merely nostalgic, and it never seems insincere. Instead, All or Nothin' simply sounds like the work of a performer who knows when to embrace her contradictions: classic and modern, iconoclastic and approachable, country and rock, urban and rural.
NPR’s support comes on the heels of a track premiere with Elle.com for Lane’s “Seein’ Double,” a darkly personal track with surf-twang guitars and a propulsive barbed hook of a chorus. Listen to the song via Elle.
Testament to Lane’s versatility and widespread appeal, she is currently out on the road opening for Athens rockers The Whigs and will immediately follow the tour with a West Coast run supporting alt-country stalwarts the Old 97’s with dates in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland. The Nashville-based South Carolina-bred chanteuse will tour heavily in support of All Or Nothin’ and just confirmed the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October. Like the thoughts and emotions behind them, Lane’s songs shift and ebb in the live setting but she promises whether she’s playing solo or with a full band she approaches each song “in the most badass way possible.” Full routing is below with many more dates to be announced soon.
With just a week before release, All Or Nothin’ is already starting to make an impact at radio. Early support has come from KEXP, who described the album as “an evocative, moody blend of noirish country-pop, ‘60s girl groups, bluesy garage-rock, spaghetti western and more” as well as SiriusXM’s The Loft, WUMB in Boston and several others.
All Or Nothin’ sees Lane teaming up with some of the finest musicians and songwriters in Nashville to craft an album that fully realizes her musical vision. Produced by Auerbach, who Lane met at her pop-up vintage clothing stall when he wanted to buy the 1940s hunting jacket she was wearing, the rousing collection of songs spans genres and eras and exudes with Lane's characteristic attitude and Southern swagger. “I wrote with so many amazing musicians on this album but Dan was really instrumental in helping me figure out the direction we were going for,” Lane says.
Over 12 tracks, Lane sings tales about misbehaving, wanton desires, heartache, love and lust. "It's always the right time to do the wrong thing," she repeats like a mantra during the infectious opener "Right Time" and that statement defines All Or Nothin' as good as anything will. “I really consider this album to be a Nikki Lane mixtape of my thoughts and the sounds that I’m into so that’s why you can’t put it in a neat box,” Lane says. From the whimsical, dreamy sensation of “I Don’t Care” to the stripped-down acoustic duet with Auerbach, “Love’s On Fire,” to the plaintive ballad “Out of My Mind,” written with former touring partner J. Spaceman of Spiritualized and the woozy, blue-eyed soul of the title track, the album showcases the many sides of Lane and her diverse influences.
Lane’s passion for music is only matched by her passion for fashion, evident from her album cover, which features her decked out in a white fringe dress and gold cape, to her impeccable stage outfits – vintage embrodiered shirts, boots, western attire, and leather motorcycle jackets. The born entrepenuer has parlayed her penchant and knowledge for the clothes of yesteryear into a successful business she calls High Class Hillbilly, a vintage clothing stall she takes around Nashville and out on tour with her, fueling the enterprise with pieces she collects on the road. In addition to selling her own wares, the style maven is highly sought after by clothing and accessory brands; she has worked with Warby Parker, Frye Boots, Minnetonka Moccasins, Billy Reid, TOMS and most recently Vans.
Armed with a compelling album and her fiery personality, Lane is poised to have a breakout year. Just one of the many reasons why CMT singled her out for thier “Next Women of Country” campaign, putting her in the same company as 2013’s artists Kacey Musgraves and Brandy Clark.

Early praise for the Movement EP: Best New Track for ‘Us’ and ‘Like Lust’ - Pitchfork
“When first hearing Movement it would be understandable to assume it was just one producer weaving hazy, smooth sounds while repeating vocal phrases like mantras. But this is a band, and watching them play this music and sing these vocals in front of you is breathtaking.” - Stereogum
“Sydney’s Movement drops what is probably their best song yet (although “Like Lust” continues to creep on us in the best way) in the spectral/sexy new track Ivory” - Gorilla vs Bear “…(a) swampy mid-tempo jammer with a yearning chord progression and the sort of heavy-chested, late night atmosphere that sounds really nice inside headphones.” – The Fader on ‘Ivory’ Movement have been honing their live show with support slots on tours with Solange and Darkside. Get a taste of what to expect on their upcoming dates via the previously released videos for ‘Us’ and ‘Like Lust’.

Malka Spigel To Release Gliding on May 19 via Swim
Malka Spigel To Release Gliding on May 19 via Swim The AV Club Premieres "Tall Grey Buildings" Video
Watch: "Tall Grey Buildings" video via The AV Club or YouTubeListen: "Tall Grey Buildings" via Noisey or SoundCloud The AV Club has premiered the video "Tall Grey Buildings" from Malka Spigel's EP Gliding out May 19 on Swim. The vide was created by Eric Scott and is made up of trippy kaleidoscopic and time-lapse sequences shot around LA and London last year, visually inspired by Malka Spigel's richly colorful Lomo stills which can be seen here. "Tall Grey Buildings" is also streaming and available to share via SoundCloud. Gliding is available for pre-order at iTunes.
In the winter of 2012, Malka Spigel played a series of concerts in France and Israel, with a full band, to promote her third solo album, Every Day Is Like the First Day. The performances drew not only on her latest record but also on several of her earlier releases, with older tracks (in completely rearranged formats) becoming highlights of the live set and, in turn, laying the foundations for Gliding.
Immediately following the 2012 dates, Spigel embarked on a studio project with the band. The objective was to revisit those live highlights as a springboard for recordings that would capture the power and dexterity of the musiciansʼ live performances and at the same time channel their creative synergy into new sonic territory.
Gliding features the core lineup of Spigel (bass, vocals), her partner Colin Newman (Wire/Githead; guitar), Ronald Lippok (To Rococo Rot/Tarwater; drums), Gil Luz (Mambas; keyboards) andUri Frost (Mambas; guitar). Also making appearances are Matthew Simms (It Hugs Back/Wire; guitar) and Julie Campbell (Lonelady; guitar).
As always, Spigel gathers an eclectic range of styles. Her signature dubby bassline and a rolling rhythm anchor the harmonically lush "Strumgliding." Dating from Spigelʼs 1993 solo debut, Rosh Ballata, the Hebrew-language "Hacol Zaram Beyachad" (featuring Campbell on guitar and backing vocals) is elegant in its simplicity. Meanwhile, on "Tall Grey Buildings," Spigel transforms the austere urban landscape into blissful pop, in the process reinventing shoegazing for 2014. By contrast, the closer, "Dreamwalking," is a darker, harder-edged, more mysterious affair, with its kaleidoscopic layers of guitar, Mellotron and heavy, distorted bass. (The tracks were finished and mixed in swim~ studio by Colin Newman.)
Gliding is a transitional record, or perhaps a prologue, for Spigel: this is very much the work of an artist on the threshold of a new creative cycle, reimagining existing material in intriguing, forward-looking ways, brimming with fresh ideas and pointing ahead in myriad directions.
Raised in Tel Aviv, Malka Spigel began her musical and artistic life in Amsterdam in the early 80s. There, she first picked up a bass guitar and, with fellow émigrés Berry Sakharof and Samy Birnbach, founded Minimal Compact, whose middle-eastern nuanced post-punk would garner a large, loyal following, especially in continental Europe. The band put out six studio albums between 1981 and 1988, and their song "When I Go" - sung by Spigel - was famously featured on the soundtrack to Wim Wenders's 1987 film, Wings of Desire. Although Minimal Compact haven't released any new material for over two decades, their stature has continued to grow with each reawakening of the band for live work: six dates in Israel in 2012, for instance, saw them play to crowds unimaginable even in their heyday. Inspired by the experience of creating an Immersion installation for Event Horizon at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 1996, Spigel began to pursue her interests beyond music, earning a degree in Fine Art (specializing in video and photography). She subsequently made video work for Immersion and promos for Minimal Compact, Vapourspace, Githead and Wire. Under the name Maya Newman, she also established herself as a photographer. Now widely known for her innovative, arresting work with Lomo LCA cameras, she has had major shows in Strasbourg (2008), Tel Aviv (2010) and Jerusalem (2011).
In 2004, with Newman and Robin Rimbaud, she formed the band Githead, which has to date released three acclaimed albums: Profile (2005), Art Pop (2007) and Landing (2010). In 2010, Spigel also developed Hopper, a site- specific performance and installation project
Fall 2012 saw the release of Spigel's third solo album, Every Day Is Like the First Day, featuring contributions from a diverse array of artists such as Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Alexander Balanescu (The Balanescu Quartet), Julie Campbell (Lonelady), Nik Colk Void (Factory Floor)and the Italian composer Teho Teardo. Live work followed in support of the record, including concerts in France and Israel, a BBC radio session for Marc Riley's 6 Music show and a performance at Wire's DRILL : LONDON festival.
