Robert Pollard wrote and recorded and played all the instruments on Please Be Honest and when he finished it felt to him like a Guided By Voices record. He's not wrong. The songs are compact and tuneful, the playing expertly slack, the production raw and unpolished: sounds pretty much like every review of Bee Thousand.

A better cognate, however, might be Vampire On Titus, Pollard's 1993 pre Bee Thousand(somewhat overlooked) lo-fi tour de force. On that record Pollard similarly played every instrument -- and while his drumming skills then were so rudimentary that he had to record the bass drum and the snare parts separately, which is no longer the case -- as with everything he does, it's about the songs, man. Of which Please Be Honest has no shortage, fifteen of them clocking in at just over 33 minutes. The point being there's precedent for a GBV record where Pollard plays everything, and maybe more importantly there's a reason for that precedent.

Robert Pollard is Guided By Voices. This has never not been true, certainly, and is now more true than ever. He delights in confounding expectations, and you have to at least suspect that after over twenty-years of making records under any number of pseudonyms, of which Guided By Voices is just one, and maybe not even his favorite one, he chafes at the notion that there exists some Platonic ideal of "Guided By Voices" that isn't just Bob writing and recording the songs with whatever musicians he wants to use. Guided By Voices' new live line-up reflects not just a possibly subconscious desire to prove that unalterable fact, but fits with Pollard's unchanging changeability. He does what he wants. He is who he is. The only "classic lineup" that has ever mattered is singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/band leader/magician/thunderstorm Robert Pollard. Long may he rain.

Fear of Men share "Trauma," new track from 'Fall Forever'

FEAR OF MEN SHARE "TRAUMA"
NEW ALBUM, FALL FOREVER, OUT 6/3 VIA KANINE RECORDS
LISTEN TO "TRAUMA"
Brighton, UK's Fear of Men have shared "Trauma," another new track from the band's upcoming album, Fall Forever. Jessica Weiss spoke to  Noisey , who premiered the track today, and told them "Trauma" is "about the difficult relationship between feeling completely violated and feeling powerful enough to rise above it.Fall Forever is available for pre-order now, and out June 3rd on Kanine Records.
Last month the band released "Island," the lead single from Fall Forever. The track received praise from Pitchfork, NPR, StereogumSpin, Gorilla vs BearPaste Magazine and The FADER amongst others.
WATCH THE "ISLAND" VIDEO
ABOUT FEAR OF MEN:2016 sees the return of Brighton's Fear of Men with Fall Forever: the band's second full-length album, and the follow-up to their acclaimed 2014 debut, Loom. Fall Forever marks a bold departure for the three-piece - comprised of Jessica Weiss, Daniel Falvey and Michael Miles - an album that builds upon the melodicism and immediacy of Loom but takes it in a stark new direction, capturing the band pushing the limits of their instruments to adopt new and alien forms.
After extensively touring in support of Loom, the band decamped in the early months of 2015 to an outbuilding of a disused abattoir in rural Kent, England, to begin work on new material. A two-hour bus ride from their native Brighton - and a blackhole for cell signal - it served as a fitting environment for a band determined to strip their sound back to the bone and rebuild it to make an album that would, on their live return, "make the stage shake."
The resultant record sees the trio twisting together sounds and influences from a variety of genres to create their own vision of what constitutes dark and modern pop. Working with producer Tom Morris to gain clarity and presence, they focused on core sounds instead of layers, while still incorporating textures and details that can be discovered upon repeat listens.
Weiss went into the process of writing Fall Forever with a desire to develop her own voice, rather than hiding behind metaphors and oblique references. The result, she says, is a "very personal and genuine record exploring where my life is at the moment," covering a time that left her "questioning feelings of belonging and structures that commonly offer support and understanding." A vocalist who has proved herself adept at conveying kaleidoscopes of emotions in just a few lines, Weiss juxtaposes feelings of independence and self-determination with rumination on reliance and intimacy. Fittingly, she calls Fall Forever a "love album," but one that explores "emotional extremes of closeness and distance, love and violence."
Equally, these contrasts are well reflected in the sonic palette of the album: cold electronics meet lush, breathing textures; frenetic post-punk drums shudder against undulating guitars that recall the fluidity of shoegaze while stripping it of that genre's crutch of thick reverb, creating a more forceful and contemporary sound. Intent on looking forward, the band utilized modern effects pedals and technology to manipulate their traditional instruments into unique forms. Such an approach can be heard on 'Until You', where frozen guitar chords warp and twist to introduce the song before erupting into a distorted wall-of-sound chorus that hits with the punch of synthesizers but bristles with a human rawness that only guitars can bring.
It's within these dichotomies that Fall Forever's greatest beauties often lie. The immediacy conjured by the trio across the album's ten tracks can at once be seen as intimate or confrontational, echoing the "emotional extremes" examined by Weiss. In twisting together sounds and influences from a plethora of genres, Fear of Men have given life to a fresh vision; a dark and modern pop record that defies easy categorization, and marks their most immersive work to date.

The Fall announce Arrows Of Love as support during Garage residency

[image error] Legendary British post-punks The Fall have announced their four night residency at The Garage, London with support from the likes of Bo Ningen, Slowcoaches, Soshin and now Arrows Of Love.
The support slot comes in time for a slew of other tour dates for Arrows, which you can see below including multiple appearances at The Great Escape and End Of The Road Festival.
Arrows Of LoveNew single ‘Toad’ out on May 27thvia Handspun Records
Listen HERE
Following the acclaimed debut album, ‘Everything’s F*cked’, explosive art-rock collective Arrows Of Love return with their brand new single, ‘Toad’, out on May 27th via the bands own Handspun Records and on limited edition vinyl and tape via Strong Island Recordings.
A precursor to their anticipated second album, ‘PRODUCT’‘Toad’ is a biting anthem of pure grit and emotion reminiscent of the likes of Fugazi and The Jesus Lizard, with stoner riffs and a recording that stands up to the bands energetic live reputation. The track was produced by Mikko Gordon (Thom Yorke, Gaz Combes), in the studio he built himself at Goldsmiths University, and mastered by Bob Weston of Shellac.
The 5-piece led by co-writers Nima and Nuha recently found themselves backed by the UK's highly competitive PRS Momentum Music Fund. After accepting an invite from CMJ Music Marathon the band confirmed a string of US dates, followed by a headline London show with Parallel Lines before the recording of their follow-up could finally begin.
Arrows Of Love are, above all, a live phenomenon. Originally aligned with the early East London wave of bohemian rock bands, it was their fiercely independent and creative drive that has taken them across the globe, to the likes of SXSWand End of the Road, to sharing stages with the likes of Buzzcocks, British Sea Power, 80’s Matchbox B-Line Disaster, The King Blues and many more. It’s on stage where London's own Arrows truly hit home.
Now, gearing up for the release of ‘PRODUCT’, the band are set to prove themselves the real deal. Drawing comparisons to the discordant, emotive musicianship of Sonic Youth to the raw power of McClusky, this second LP sees a band fully diversified, ready to release something truly unique.

The Grande Ballroom era is potentially the greatest untold story in rock and roll history," saysD'Annunzio, a Detroit native. "With everything Detroit has been through in the last several decades, I wanted to let folks know that aside from the automobile industry, the city has some amazing musical history which helped shape American pop culture."
While the west coast was grooving to the sounds of the "Summer of Love" in 1967, Detroit was pumping out a hard-driving, gritty, raw sound. At the epicenter of this seminal music scene stood the Grande Ballroom, Detroit's original rock and roll palace. That sound was Louder Than Love.  Louder Than Love - The Grande Ballroom Story  relates the story of the hallowed halls that started it all, as told by the artists and fans who helped fuel the Grande phenomenon.
In the late 1960s, the Grande helped to break some of America's most iconic rock bands including MC5, Iggy and the Stooges and Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, who influenced local musicians and inspired bands all over the U.S. and Great Britain. Legendary acts such as Led Zeppelin, Cream, B.B. King, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd and the Who played the Grande main stage on a regular basis. D'Annunzio amassed more than 75 + hours of interviews with artists and other insiders from The Grande's heyday including musical icons B.B. King, Alice Cooper, Roger Daltrey, Scott Morgan, Mark Farner, Tom Morello, Wayne Kramer, Lemmy, Ted Nugent, Henry Rollins, Don Was, Slash, Dick Wagner, and James Williamson. He also collected over 500 never-before-seen archival photos-taken by professional photographers and fans-of performers such as The Who, Howlin' Wolf, Albert King, Cream, Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck Group, MC5, Traffic, and Iron Butterfly.
"We have incredible 8mm film of The Who performing "Tommy" for the first time, including an audio recording by Pete Townsend explaining "Tommy" to The Grande audience. Both have never been seen or heard in any documentary," D'Annunzio notes.
The DVD can be pre-ordered now at the MVD Shop or on Amazon.
