"The lo-fi camera work and murky lighting are a perfect match for the track, whose jangling rhythm guitars are overpowered by ugly overdriven leads, suggesting Neil Young migrating into and steadily taking over The Byrds" - FLOOD
"Vocals from bandleader Bobby Hecksher weaving wearily through static sonic terrain with the gusto of a jaded vagabond — which is a lot more pleasing than that description may sound."
- SPINPsych-rock mainstays The Warlocks are now streaming their new album via BlackBook. Songs From The Pale Eclipse is out tomorrow on Cleopatra Records. You can pre-order it now on iTunes.Formed in America during 1999, The Warlocks produce a relentless, hypnotic wall of sound that suggests a collision between classic psychedelia, Krautrock and Velvet Underground style rock and roll. It's just what the head doctor orders if you wish to be an underground stateside phenomenon and that's exactly what The Warlocks became. Front man Bobby Hecksher grew up in the swamps of Tampa Bay, Florida where he was practically raised at a radio station owned his grandfather and where his mum also worked as a secretary. As a result Bobby was soon eating and breathing rock'n'roll on a daily basis. Bobby recalls, "My granddad was an inspiration. He created the radio station out of thin air. And from it all these nuggets of rock'n'roll came toward me".At sixteen his family left the swamps and moved to LA where Bobby soon found kindred spirits. He jammed with Beck, playing bass on Stereopathetic Soulmanure, Beck’s second independently released album. He hung out in the decadent atmosphere of the Mad Hatter club and moonlighted in the Brian Jonestown Massacre whilst also attending parties with legendary acid guru Timothy Leary, a potent cultural and creative mix that led to the formation of The Warlocks.Their debut album Rise & Fall (Bomp 2000) set out their template, allowing The Warlocks to build upon their reputation as a forceful live act. But it was the band's signing of a worldwide deal with Mute (in conjunction with City Rockers in the UK and with Birdman in America) that led to the release of Phoenix (2003) a record that raised their profile significantly. The album's varying moods and atmospheres range from the driving power of "Shake the Dope Out" to the 14-minute, hallucinogenic opus "Oh Shadie." International touring in support of the release and the sheer power of Warlock’s gigantic live sound built a worldwide cult following for the band that has only grown and intensified.2005 saw Hecksher and company team up with veteran producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Elbow, Motörhead) for the band’s third album, the dreamy blissed-out Surgery. After some significant changes in personnel, the band returned just 2 years later with the darker Heavy Deavy Skull Lover released on Tee Pee Records, followed by 2009’s The Mirror Explodes produced by Rod Cervera and Joey Santiago of The Pixies. All the while, the band continued to develop their sound and grow their fanbase, and after a somewhat longer hiatus, the Warlocks returned in 2013 withSkull Worship. For The Warlock’s newest album, Hecksher has dug deep into the demo vault for the most promising, undiscovered musical treasures, which the band then reworked and re-recorded to bring you Songs From The Pale Eclipse. Hecksher explains, “Songs From The Pale Eclipse is a collection I’ve been wanting to get to for the last decade or so. We’ve sifted through stacks of demos, odds and ends on my 8-track…not everything fits like it’s one cohesive album; it’s not supposed to! In this modern age, you can pick and choose as you like!”The first single from Songs From The Pale Eclipse, “Lonesome Bulldog,” features Hecksher’s solemn, yet seductive, raspy voice paired perfectly with melodic guitars that chime and swirl and sharp, tight drums. Hecksher’s poetic lyrics, such as “trying to unwind the time, falling through the mirror, with acid on my mind” from the track “We Took All The Acid” are playful yet articulate. “Drinking Song” is complete with visionary themes of the personification of alcohol and deep moods that reveal the pain of alcoholism, expressed by the line “oh alcohol, you know me too well.” The album’s deft production illuminates the multi-textured instrumentation and harmonically-rich vocals. All together, the effortless sounds of Songs From The Pale Eclipse will leave the listener intoxicated.

Jack White has released a new song from JACK WHITE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS 1998-2016. The track, a never-before-heard and previously unreleased acoustic mix of the Raconteurs' "Carolina Drama," is available now. "Carolina Drama (Acoustic Mix)," which is featured as today's Zane Lowe "World Record" on Beats1, is also included as an instant download with all digital pre-orders of JACK WHITE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS 1998-2016, along with previously unreleased White Stripes ballad "City Lights."
LISTEN TO CAROLINA DRAMA HERE
Journalist Greil Marcus writes about "Carolina Drama" in the album's exclusive liner notes: "There's a counterpoint in the sweeping 'Carolina Drama,' from the Raconteurs' 2008 album Consolers of the Lonely, here with the original drum track dropped, so that the uncanny sensation that can make a traditional old-time murder ballad come across as a ghost story stands out. With guitar that sneaks in through banjo and fiddle from the Rolling Stones' 'Sister Morphine,' this is a frighteningly present-day murder ballad, with a shaggy dog punchline-and so musically in tune with the tradition it claims and affirms you don't need to listen to the words to follow the story, which gets bigger, bigger, voices joining from all across the horizon of the song, White's vocal speeding up as if to keep up with the haunts that are already disappearing around the bend of the tune, into a world you'd just as soon not enter." JACK WHITE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS 1998-2016 (Third Man Records/Columbia) will be released on September 9th, the very same day that White will appear on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform solo acoustic on TV for the first time ever. White and Third Man Records have also announced a special, limited edition colored vinyl version of JACK WHITE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS 1998-2016. The 180-gram double LP on blue vinyl with black and white whisps will be available exclusively at Third Man Records' Nashville and Cass Corridor, Detroit storefronts on the September 9th release day. This colored pressing will be the only limited edition version of the record that is produced.
JACK WHITE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS 1998-2016 is the essential Jack White songwriting collection --a 26-track double-LP and double-CD that features alternate versions, mixes and previously unreleased recordings from The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and solo material all completely remastered. The album is available for pre-order physically and digitally now. JACK WHITE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS 1998-2016 collects acoustic songs from throughout White's wide-ranging musical career, spanning album tracks, B-sides, remixes, alternate versions, and previously unreleased tracks. The album, arranged in chronological order, includes acoustic songs made famous by The White Stripes, beginning with "Sugar Never Tasted So Good" (originally found on The White Stripes' second-ever 7-inch single) and then lighting upon favorites like "Apple Blossom" and "I'm Bound To Pack It Up" (remixed here from the original recordings on 2000's DE STIJL), "Hotel Yorba" and "We're Going To Be Friends" (from 2001's WHITE BLOOD CELLS), "You've Got Her In Your Pocket" and "Well It's True That We Love One Another" (from 2003's GRAMMY® Award-winning ELEPHANT), "Forever For Her (Is Over For Me)," "White Moon" and "As Ugly As I Seem" (from 2005's GET BEHIND ME SATAN) "Effect & Cause" (from 2007's ICKY THUMP), and the Beck-produced "Honey, We Can't Afford To Look This Cheap," first found on the B-side to The White Stripes' final single, 2007's "Conquest." Also featured are "Never Far Away" (recorded for 2003's COLD MOUNTAIN: MUSIC FROM THE MIRAMAX MOTION PICTURE) and "Love Is The Truth" (written and recorded for Coca-Cola's 2006 What Goes Around campaign) as well as the Bluegrass Version of "Top Yourself" and an acoustic mix of the epic murder ballad, "Carolina Drama," both written by White and Brendan Benson for The Raconteurs' GRAMMY® Award-winning 2008 album, CONSOLERS OF THE LONELY. White's two chart-topping solo albums, 2012's BLUNDERBUSS and 2014's LAZARETTO, are represented by a remarkably diverse range of material including "Love Interruption," "On And On And On," "Blunderbuss," "Entitlement," "Want And Able," and alternative mixes of "Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy," "Just One Drink," "I Guess I Should Go To Sleep," and B-side, "Machine Gun Silhouette." The 26 tracks featured on JACK WHITE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS 1998-2016 were remastered earlier this year by Andrew Mendelson at Nashville, TN's Georgetown Masters. All songs were written and produced exclusively by Jack White, except "Never Far Away" (produced by T Bone Burnett), "Honey, We Can't Afford To Look This Cheap" (produced by Beck), "Top Yourself (Bluegrass Version)" and "Carolina Drama" (written & produced by White & Brendan Benson), and "Machine Gun Silhouette" (written by White & Rob Jones). HANNI EL KHATIB SHARES NEW SONG "GUN CLAP HERO" VIACONSEQUENCE OF SOUND
SAVAGE TIMES VOL. 1, 2 & 3 AVAILABLE NOW VIA INNOVATIVE LEISURE
Photo credit: Sam MonkarshLISTEN: "Gun Clap Hero" - https://hannielkhatib.bandcamp.com/track/gun-clap-hero
"Hanni El Khatib has been on an unreal creative streak lately" - Noisey
"It's like a maturation of Rae Sremmurd's youthful hedonism wrapped in guitar strings and catchy grooves." - Stereogum
"Sounds somewhat like a happy marriage between The Black Keys and Nirvana" - Interview
2016 has been a prolific year for Hanni El Khatib that has seen him release three collections of new work in Savage Times Vol. 1, 2 & 3. Today he is back to share a new song, "Gun Clap Hero."
A deeply personal song for Hanni, the track is a response to the civil struggle that is gripping the country. On the inspiration and meaning behind the song he says, "I wrote this song to help me articulate what's has been running through my mind given the recent events of violence and brutality that seem to keep happening at an alarming rate. Sometimes those that are meant to protect quickly blur the lines of heroism with fear, thus reacting in immediate violence. It's saddening to see this unfold in front of our eyes. This is for anyone who's ever lost someone they love to unjust circumstances."
Listen to "Gun Clap Hero" above now, and find more on Hanni El Khatib and stream Savage Times Vol. 1, 2 & 3 below.
About Hanni El Khatib:
You could call 2015 a breakthrough year for Hanni El Khatib, but it wasn't just an easy breakthrough all at once. Instead, it was step after unexpected step and chance after random circumstance, part of a zig-zag path that now has El Khatib working on the most unexpected project he's come up with yet-a project that doesn't even have a name or even an ending right now.
His album Moonlight, a Sandinista!-style festival of experimentation that hit in January 2015, was where everything started. A recording studio meet-up led to a GZA verse on "Moonlight," and that led to an El Khatib appearance on one of GZA's songs-the cover of Babe Ruth's "The Mexican"-and he followed that up by contributing the ghostly middle break to rapper Freddie Gibbs' bleaked-out "Satin Black." By summer he'd put out a picture disc single of his desolate take on D'Angelo and Premier's brooding "Devil's Pie" and teamed up with a bunch of elementary school kids from Staten Island's P.S. 22 Chorus for a rework of "Moonlight" and "Melt Me," and yes, it was as adorable as you'd think. He'd finish producing the debut album for Parisian psychedelic trio Wall of Death, and he'd make it all the way to Vladivostok, Russia, for a final set of festival appearances that the local U.S. consulate reported "brought artist and audience closer together." Then he'd play his last show of the year-last show to date, really-in September of 2015. And then everything suddenly changed. El Khatib was booked to headline a Paris show with a special one-shot supergroup including drummer Alex Sowinski of BadBadNotGood, bassist Jonny Bell of Crystal Antlers and Dam-Funk collaborator and solo synthesizer wizard Computer Jay. But the Bataclan attacks canceled those plans, and so El Khatib was left with unexpected space in his schedule. He took the time to hole up with his guitar and generate hundreds of ideas-an uninterrupted flow that left dozens of voice-memo song snippets on his phone-and booked a session at Bell's Jazzcats studio in December to see what would happen. The very first day pretty much immediately resulted in "Gonna Die Alone" and "Baby's OK"-the first two new songs he's released so far, by the way-and instantly crystallized a simple new idea: write, record, repeat. Instead of a new album, he'd work on a new state of mind. Although he'd already begun to work behind the mixing board with earlier signees to Innovative Leisure,Moonlight was El Khatib's first full-scale production credit-an experience of deep commitment to every level of making an album, from the first idea to the very last mix. He'd locked himself in an L.A. studio for thirty days, and after a long month of vintage gear, field recordings of funerals, so-crazy-it-might-work sample editing and more than a little whiskey, he walked out on April Fool's Day with his most daring and distinctive album ever. That meant that when he finally finished touring for Moonlight and started at Jazzcats that winter, he truly knew what he could do in a studio. So El Khatib teamed up with Bell and submerged himself completely into recording, this time decamping to Jazzcats for week after week of lockdown improvisation. (And night after night of recovery-or discovery-at some of Long Beach's oldest and least-revitalized bars.) This was a new project, based on turning limitations-limited time, limited instruments, limited knowledge of how exactly to play strange new instruments-into inspiration, and of working non-stop with Bell to chase every idea until it either took flight or cracked into pieces. Although only two songs have materialized so far, there are more coming. In fact, there are more being made right now. Moonlight was when Hanni tested every rule there is about making an album, but now he's not making an album at all. Instead, this is process as public performance: an artist releasing music to the world almost in real time, with nothing to interfere with the purity or intimacy. (If you were in L.A. on Record Store Day, you could've even got a special one-of-a-kind 7" of one of the songs, made especially for you by Bell and his record-cutting lathe.) Normally, at this point in a band bio, you'd get to find out what's coming next. But no one really knows what's coming next-not even El Khatib. All anyone can do for now is just listen.

Today, BADBADNOTGOOD are sharing the video for "Chompy's Paradise" from their recently released and critically-acclaimed album IV. Their latest album sees BADBADNOTGOOD exploring new sonic terrain and expanding their songwriting to include collaborators such as Future Islands' Samuel T. Herring, newcomer Charlotte Day Wilson, Arcade Fire and Bon Iver collaborator Colin Stetson, Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins, and widely-heralded Canadian producer Kaytranada.
The Connor Crawford-directed visual for "Chompy's Paradise" nods to Film Noir yet takes a comedic approach to the genre. Watch as saxophonist Leland "Chompy" Whitty works to diffuse a bomb strapped to his instrument, only to realize that the saxophone may be the duplicitous perpetrator.

About BADBADNOTGOOD:
Like musical theatre and scripted television, jazz and hip-hop are uniquely, undeniably North American art forms. Though the latter genre was born out of funk and disco in the late 1970s, many of its landmark artists embody the ethos of jazz: loose, visceral, instinctive. Some hip-hop acts--A Tribe Called Quest, or more recently Kendrick Lamar--have successfully repurposed jazz, but the older genre has seldom made successful inroads into new generations of rap fans. And that's what makes BADBADNOTGOOD, the four-piece, Toronto-bred jazz outfit that has melded jazz and instrumental hip-hop into something elusive, something altogether their own, so unique.
On their latest full-length effort, IV (due out via Innovative Leisure on July 8th), BBNG decide to expand their universe, which was already one of the most compelling, labyrinthine worlds in pop music today. Saxophonist Leland Whitty, a long-time collaborator, joins Chester Hansen, Matthew Tavares, and Alexander Sowinski on a full-time basis; for the first time, guest vocalists are welcomed into the fold. Some artists find collaboration stressful and cluttering, but BBNG simply seems freer to chase down creative rabbit holes than ever before.
The effect is apparent immediately. See "Lavender," a collaboration with the Montreal-based producer Kaytranada, which pairs delicate, skittering production with a punishing low end. Or take the virtuosic closer, which underscores superb performances by Whitty and Tavares with a grand swell of strings. On "Hyssop of Love," upstart Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins moves languidly, stretching out taunts ("I heard your plug was drrrrry") before he snaps upright ("Never needed no dollars to prove worth"). The result is not just BBNG's most expansive, most dynamic effort to date, but their best. Lest anyone think the group is only concerned with blurring genre lines, the title track alone is enough to ensure the most discerning jazz purists will have to respect BBNG's technical chops.
IV is a master class in mood. The opening three-song suite ("And That, Too.," "Speaking Gently," and the Samuel T. Herring-assisted "Time Moves Slow") is a slow, slinking creep, like moving uneasily through an abandoned house. And while BBNG explores different tones on subsequent tracks, that feeling--the search, the push for the unknown--is the prevailing theme. "Chompy's Paradise" is peaceful and serene, but ends on an uncertain note, unresolved. Like most great artists before them, the quartet understands that it's more important to raise questions than to answer them.
