Kleenex/LiLiPUT 'First Songs' 2LP compilation due 12/09/16

Kleenex/LiLiPUT First Songs 2LP compilation due 12/09/16

Kleenex/LiLiPUT 'First Songs' “You can't dispute LiLiPUT's status as pioneers of feminist art-punk. Along with fellow travelers like the Slits and the Raincoats, this (mostly) female Swiss group took advantage of punk's anything-goes attitude and created jittery, spirited pop that was both in step with the times and completely singular. The early material is a riot of exuberant energy, taking stylistic cues from peers like Gang of Four and Wire-- propulsive bass, skittering pop rhythms, slashing guitars-- and adding distinctive overlapping vocal patterns, which are sung, shrieked, and hiccupped in three languages and made- up dadaistic slang. More than 20 years on, it still sounds fresh.” - Lisa Gidley

Kill Rock Stars is excited to announce the December 9th, 2016 release of  First Songs , a 2LP set of recordings from the legendary punk bands Kleenex and LiLiPUT First Songs  combines all the pre-1982 material, all 3 Kleenex singles, the first 2 Liliput 7"’s and all the originally unreleased material prior to Liliput’s debut LP. Click here to watch Kleenex perform the track "Hedi's Head."

The Ballad of Kleenex/LiliputThe fact that punk rock could capture the imaginations of young people around Europe and America in the late '70's was embodied in the five-year output of Switzerland's Kleenex (later renamed Liliput).  The music meant empowerment for many people to take chances and not worry about consequences.  This was especially so for women like guitarist Marlene Marder and bassist Klaudia Schiff, the two constants/mainstays of the groupWhen punk groups began springing up in Zurich, it was a very small scene with a handful of bands that all knew each other, not many places to play and virtually no support from radio stations or the press there.  Marder (originally a saxophonist) had played with a group called the Nasal Boys.  Two experimental film-makers, Schiff and drummer Lislot Ha had been bouncing around the idea of forming group before hooking up with the appropriately-named vocalist Regula Sing and a male guitarist who had much more ambitious musician plans.  Marder liked what she heard from the band and was glad to step in to replace him.  Indeed, the group's aim was to have fun, more than to become rich and famous.  Armed with a repertoire of four-songs and three chords, Kleenexwowed the local crowds with their simple, child-like rock ditties, filled with joyful chants and nonsense words in the tradition of Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" but musically more in the noisy, exuberant spirit of their British comrades the Sex Pistols.Kleenex had local friends who decided to start up a label (Sunrise) where the band put out their first (self-financed) EP in 1978, which included the same four songs from their live sets ("Beri-Beri," "Ain't You," "Hedi's Head," "Nice").  The response was such that the first pressing sold out in weeks. A copy of the EP managed to get to John Peel, the famous English DJ, who fell in love with it and played it over and over for his radio listeners.  Rough Trade got wind of their strange, wonderful music and signed the group to a record contract.  Their first single ("Ain't You" and "Hedi's Head" from the EP) made a splash with the UK press and led the label to organize a group of dates around Europe with label-mates Scritti Politti and Red Krayola.  Not even a year after their formation, the group was already an international sensation even though, at the time, they still held various clerical jobs back in Zurich.Coming to England, they were unimaginatively dubbed the 'Swiss Slits' by the press and made their next single ("You"/"U", 1979) with Krayola leader/Rough Trade producer Mayo Thompson.  Soon, they were off headlining an English 'package tourí with local favorites like the RaincoatsSwell MapsSubway Sect and Spizz Energi. After the tour ended in late '79, Sing left the group to be replaced by Chrigle Freund, a recent high school dropout, much younger than the rest of the group.  With the loss of their original singer and threats to destroy all their records by the tissue company, which they took their name from, the group rechristened itself as Liliput in 1980, soon adding saxist Angie Barrack to their ranks.  This five-piece line up recorded their next single 'Die Matrosen/Split' with its famous nonsense cheers/shouts ('Hotch-potch, Hugger-mugger, Bow-wow, Hara-kiri!'), making a splash on the UK indie/alternative charts.Despite their success, Ha and Barrack left the group, reducing them to a trio.  Their next single, 1981's politically-motivated 'Eisiger Wind' (with its Hugo Ball parody sleeve) caught the attention of noted American rock critics Robert Christgau and Greil Marcus, who praised the innovative trio.  By the time the single was released, the band was in the middle of another personnel crisis with Freund now leaving the group.  Marder and Schiff closed ranks and assembled a new band with singer Astrid Spirit, drummer Beat Schlatter and saxist Christoph Herzog.  After a successful German tour, the later two left the band (though Schlatter continued to help on drums) and the group was a trio again. After four years, the group finally released a full-length album ('Liliput') for Rough Trade in 1982, leading into another tour.  After another single ('The Jatz'/'You Did It', 1983), Marder and Schiff were tired, not having fun anymore and ready to quit.  Spirit rallied them to do another record with an advance from Rough Trade Germany.  Their second album (Some Songs, which Marder thinks is some of their best work), with various guests helping out and Spirit now playing violin, turned out to be their swan song.  Spirit decided that she wanted to raise a family instead of being in a band, spelling the end of the group in late '83.  Marder had her own record shop, worked at a jazz club and had a band in the late '80's called Danger MiceSchiff returned to painting, which she had done for many flyers and sleeves for the band.First Songs tracklistAin’t You

They break down songs from across their catalogues, such as the National's "All the Wine," "Fake Empire," and "Lemonworld," and Conor's "Lua," "You Are Your Mother's Child" and "Artifact #1." They also discuss their favorite songwriters, giving a lot of love Leonard Cohen.

Public Access T.V. Announce U.S. Never Enough Tour in 2017

Public Access T.V. Announce Their Never Enough U.S. Tour in Early 2017
Public Access T.V. is happy to share that they’ll be bringing their Never Enough tour to the U.S. in early 2017, including a marquee stop at infamous Bowery Ballroom in New York on Thursday, February 9th.  The band is touring in support of their recently released album Never Enough, out recently on Cinematic.

Public Access T.V. successfully nabbed the attention of NME early on, singing their praises after uploading just one song to SoundCloud.  The quartet was later declared "New York City's hottest new band" by the extremely influential outlet.  Consequence of Sound also raved about the band admitting "every once in a while, an impossibly young band still manages to rocket their way to festival slots and massive praise by virtue of being kickass. That's Public Access T.V."  Check out “End of an Era” here.  Check out a video about the band here.

The band is hot off of Bonnaroo and Governor's Ball Festivals this year- both festival appearances happened all before even releasing their first album.  In addition, both NME, and Entertainment Weekly declared the group one of the "buzziest" bands at SXSW this past year.  Extremely high praise for a festival boasting thousands of artists!  See full dates for their 2017 tour below.

Pissed Jeans "Why Love Now" (Feb. 24, 2017) + Listen to "The Bar Is Low"

Why Love Now , the fifth album from
Pissed Jeans

will be available February 24th, 2017
worldwide from Sub Pop

Listen to lead single “The Bar is Low”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJscLzuxiWc Photo credit: Ebru YildizPhiladelphia’s Pissed Jeans have been making gnarly noise for 13 years, and on their fifth album Why Love Now, the male-fronted quartet is taking aim at the mundane discomforts of modern life—from fetish webcams to office-supply deliveries. The album will see its worldwide release on February 24th, 2017 from longtime label Sub Pop.

Pissed Jeans' gutter-scraped amalgamation of sludge, punk, noise, and bracing wit make the band—Matt Korvette (vocals), Brad Fry (guitar), Randy Huth (bass) and Sean McGuinness (drums)—a release valve for a world where absurdity seems in a constant battle trying to outdo itself. Why Love Now picks at the bursting seams that are barely holding 21st-century life together. Take the grinding rave-up and lead single "The Bar Is Low" [link] which, according to Korvette, is "about how every guy seems to be revealing themselves as a shithead.”

As they did on their last album, 2013's Honeys, Pissed Jeans offer a couple of "fuck that shit type songs" about the working world, with the blistering "Worldwide Marine Asset Financial Analyst" turning unwieldy job titles into sneering punk choruses and "Have You Ever Been Furniture" waving a flag for those whose job descriptions might as well be summed up by "professionally underappreciated."

And the startling "I'm A Man," which comes at the album's midpoint, finds author Lindsay Hunter (Ugly Girls) taking center stage, delivering a self-penned monologue of W.B. Mason-inspired erotica—office small talk about pens and coffee given just enough of a twist to expose its filthy underside, with Hunter adopting a grimacing menace that makes its depiction of curdled masculinity even more harrowing.

No Wave legend Lydia Lunch shacked up in Philadelphia to produce Why Love Now alongside local metal legend Arthur Rizk (Eternal Champion, Goat Semen). "I knew she wasn't a traditional producer," Korvette says of Lunch. "We wanted to mix it up a little bit. I like how she's so cool and really intimidating. I didn't know how it was going to work out. She ended up being so fucking awesome and crazy. She was super into it, constantly threatening to bend us over the bathtub. I'm not really sure what that entails, but I know she probably wasn't joking.”

The combination of Lunch's spiritual guidance and Rizk's technical prowess supercharged Pissed Jeans, and the bracing Why Love Now documents them at their grimy, grinning best. While its references may be very early-21st-century, its willingness to state its case cement it as an album in line with punk's tradition of turning norms on their heads and shaking them loose.

Why Love Now will be released on CD / LP / DL and is available for preorder now [link]. LP preorders through megamart.subpop.com will receive the limited Loser Edition on lavender vinyl (while supplies last).

The eleven-day festival will see Noise Pop HQ return to the Swedish American Hall, making it ground zero for intimate acoustic performances and a variety of special events and shows.
Additionally, Noise Pop Festival is proud to announce that Shepard Fairey—world-renowned contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, illustrator and founder of OBEY Clothing, who created art for the festival in 2000 and 2012 has contributed art for this year’s festival as well.
Last year, Noise Pop saw some of the highest attendance in the festival’s history with over 90% of the acts playing to sold-out crowds. In total, over 21,000 people attended the 2016 festival, which included 150+ music artists across more than 17 Bay Area venues, with events including concerts, film screenings, art shows and more. Noise Pop Festival also saw an increase in overall traffic between venues last year. In previous years, the average number of shows per night badge-holders attended held steady at around 2.3 shows, while last year that number rose to 3.1 per night. This rise was largely attributed to a special collaboration with Lyft, as well as the Noise Pop app on DoStuff, which made venue-hopping easier and more-efficient—an effort the festival plans to utilize again and expand upon in support of the 25th event.
The lineup last year expanded to include more genres than ever before with multiple jazz, hip-hop, and pop acts joining the festival roster. Among the numerous sold-out performances were Kamasi Washington, Parquet Courts, Kneedelus, The Cave Singers, Vince Staples, Drive Like Jehu, Neon Indian, and DIIV. Additional musical highlights included American Football, Metric, Joywave, iLoveMakonnen, Heartwatch, La Sera, Ringo Deathstarr, Day Wave, and Her Space Holiday, which marked their first live show since 2011. To check out visual highlights from last year’s fest, visit www.noisepop.com/2016/photos/.
For the 2017 festival, a limited amount of Early Bird badges will be available at 9 a.m. PT Monday, November 14 for $145. Once these badges are gone, regular badges will be available for $175. PETE YORN'S NEW VIDEO, "SHE WAS WEIRD," PREMIERES TODAY ON VOGUE.COM

PETE YORN'S NEW VIDEO, "SHE WAS WEIRD,"PREMIERES TODAY ON VOGUE.COM
Directed By And Starring Brazilian Model Flavia Lucini,Clip Can Be Seen On Vogue.com Track Is From Yorn's New Album, ArrangingTimeThe video for "She Was Weird," a standout track from Pete Yorn's new album, ArrangingTime  (Capitol Records), premiered today on Vogue.com and can be seen HERE . The clip is the winning entry in a contest that Yorn announced earlier, which encouraged fans to let their DIY ethic shine."We held a contest to see who could come up with the most creative and inspiring visual take on the song. The only criteria was that they shoot it themselves on an iPhone or have a friend shoot it," says Pete Yorn. "Of all the submissions, Flavia Lucini's entry inspired us the most in its original and colorful interpretation. She directed it herself in a very DIY fashion. We think Flavia really captured the spirit of the song and couldn't be happier to share this with everyone. Stay weird!"Contest winner Flavia Lucini, a Brazilian model who will appear in the upcoming Victoria's Secret Paris show, recalls, "When I learned about the Pete Yorn video contest, I immediately called my friend and art partner Rogerio Mesquita, who is a photographer and film maker. We had been collaborating for a while on a photographic project where we both photograph over the same film, and this was another endeavor I wanted to take together in order to consolidate our creative partnership. We somehow knew that we could go on full creative mode on this project and not hold back for a second. We listened to the song several times. We loved it from the beginning, it was very inspirational.  "The first scene had seven takes, making me almost ill from eating the disgusting mix of dressings I was putting on the bread. Most of the other scenes were resolved with two or three takes. The film then went on to be edited, which took one and a half hour. Personally, since I try to be creative with my photography and painting, it was an incredible experience to create and act in this music video.  Even more so, for being chosen as the visual enactment of a great song by an artist such as Pete Yorn. It made me feel very good about this second career I am pursuing."ArrangingTime, Yorn's first solo studio album in more than five years, debuted in the Top 5 of Billboard's Alternative Albums and Folk Albums charts and in the Top 10 of the Top Rock Albums chart. Paste Magazine said it "affirms his skill and sensibilities. The songs shine."Entertainment Weekly noted,"propulsive cuts like 'Summer Was a Day' and 'Lost Weekend' sound refreshingly back-to-basics, like rediscovering a long-forgotten Jackson Browne record."In an 8/10 review, Uncut hailed  ArrangingTime  as "a creative reboot" while AllMusic.com found its "enveloping warmth...alluring."The album marks his first collaboration with producer R. Walt Vincent sinceYorn's 2001's RIAA Gold-certified debut, musicforthemorningafter, and 2003's Day I Forgot ArrangingTime  follows Yorn's acclaimed 2010 self-titled album, recorded with The Pixies' Frank Black, and a pair of adventurous collaborations - 2009's Break Up withScarlett Johansson and The Olms (2013), a '60s-styled retro-pop duo with J.D. COSMETIC OUT NOW ON GONER RECORDS

WATCH / SHARE "INHERENTLY LOW" VIA YOUTUBE HERE
Memphis' NOTS hit us with their video "Inherently Low" today.  The piece was created by front woman Natalie Hoffmann after the results of last week's election. She explains  "the tension and fear that came with the results certainly played a part in the visual outcome of the video. America has elected someone who has openly campaigned to keep us low. To keep us completely divided. To keep us at war. I don't think that I (or anyone) can fully process the weight of what is to come, but this video is an attempt to translate both what the song is about, and how I've felt since the election results - a new awareness, anger, and fear about being kept inherently low."
LENNY LETTER debuted the video and dug into how poetry, politics and Pablo Neruda inspired their critically acclaimed sophomore release 'Cosmetic' that's available now on Goner Records.  Stay tuned for 2017 live dates.

The Wedding Present share new session version of 'Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft' and announce 'George Best 30th Anniversary Tour 2017'

The Wedding Present share new session version of 'Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft' and announce ‘George Best 30th Anniversary Tour 2017’
New album, ‘Marc Riley Sessions Volume 1’, released 9th Decemberon Hatch Records
[image error]
“The release of The Wedding Present sessions done for our 6 Music programme over the years is something of an honour. In the great tradition of the Peel/Selwood releases on the Strange Fruit label this record proves that even without John the BBC can still be a place where great bands can continue to grow and be creative… amongst friends.” Marc Riley
This December, Hatch Records, in conjunction with BBC Radio 6 Music, are pleased to announce the first in a series of stunning Marc Riley radio sessions from UK indie legends, The Wedding Present. Released 9th December, ‘Marc Riley Sessions Volume 1’ consists of three memorable studio sessions from 2007, 2008 and 2010.
You can now stream the classic 'Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft' prior to release, “We’ve recorded several sessions over the last decade for Marc of which I’m very proud” says David Gedge, “… and my archivist streak didn’t want to see them just gathering dust on a shelf! There are about thirty tracks so far - including a handful that we recorded just last month. The sessions are recorded and transmitted live to air so there’s an intensity and exhilaration - not to mention fear! - that’s present when you perform songs like that. People are always telling me that you can hear the urgency in the recordings. We’ve been talking for some time, now, about how we could release them tastefully and this series feels like a great way to do that. I’m really happy that Hatch Records came forward and offered to do it for us!”
Highlighting the incredible consistency of David Gedge´s prolific songwriting over the period of three decades, the release includes a rollicking ‘Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft’ (‘George Best’ 1987), a stirling rendition of stone-cold proto-indie classic ‘Brassneck’ (‘Bizarro’ 1989), an anger-filled ‘Heather’ (‘Seamonsters’ 1991), and a ripping version of ‘Don’t Take Me Home Until I’m Drunk’ (‘El Rey’ 2008). Also included is live favourite ‘Where Everybody Knows Your Name’, a cover of the theme music to classic US sitcom ‘Cheers’.
One of the most listened to music shows on BBC 6 Music, Marc Riley is synonymous with popular radio; his long-running, Sony Radio Academy Award-nominated weekday evening show mixes the classics with the cutting-edge and has helped break numerous acts in recent years including Metronomy, Ezra Furman, Field Music, King Creosote, Everything Everything and Wild Beasts.
A band with a history that’s inextricably intertwined with the BBC and in particular the late BBC DJ John Peel, an early champion of the band, the ‘Marc Riley Sessions Volume 1’ echoes the famous Peel/Selwood releases on the Strange Fruit label that included BBC sessions from the likes of New Order, Buzzcocks, The Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen.
“There were many other bands who benefitted from the ‘Peel Effect’. Too numerous to mention. But one of those was — as if you can’t see this coming — The Wedding Present. The constant support. Plays. Sessions. Encouragement. Friendship. John’s love of the George Best LP (which was a heroic support considering John’s affiliation to Liverpool — Manchester United’s most hated rival) was well known… and until John passed away he remained a firm fan of all things ‘Gedge’”, says Riley.
An avid Wedding Present fan himself, Riley shares in common with Peel that same enthusiasm for new music. His show is a continuation of the legacy Peel left behind, a man he grew up listening to and eventually formed a solid relationship with. Riley and his merry team of producers have formed a close bond with David Gedge and his band in recent years and the band have performed numerous sessions for the show, showcasing new material and returning to a few old classics along the way.
Forming in 1985, The Wedding Present are one of the UK’s most longstanding and much-loved indie bands with eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles to their name. Not bad for a band that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry’s game. Their breathtakingly honest love songs immersed in whirlwind guitars had Peel declare,“The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the rock ’n’ roll era. You may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong!”.
The Wedding Present recently released their critically acclaimed ninth studio album ‘Going, Going…’ and are to embark on an extensive UK tour this winter along with the George Best 30th Anniversary Tour in summer 2017.
