Lou Barlow Shares Video for "The Breeze," 'Apocalypse Fetish' Out Now

Photo courtesy of Adam HardingLou Barlow Shares New  Video  for "The Breeze,"
Apocalypse Fetish  Out Now  via Joyful Noise Recordings
Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, the Folk Implosion) recently released his new EP, Apocalypse Fetish , via Joyful Noise Recordings. A follow-up to last year's Brace The
Wave --
his first solo release in six years -- it features five new tracks recorded with Justin Pizzoferrato at Sonelab in Easthampton, Massachusetts.

Now, Barlow has shared a video for EP opener "The Breeze," which pairs a tuned-down ukulele with soft, effortless vocals that lead to an impassioned chorus. You can watch the video where it premiered with  FLOOD Magazine  or via  YouTube . Speaking on the new EP, Barlow says:
"Apocalypse Fetish is a 5 song extended play release from, me, Lou Barlow. The cover features a newborn child peering warily over the edge of her mother’s sling into 2016, the year that conspiracy theorists became experts and anger went [even more] mainstream. The song "Apocalypse Fetish" proposes that, perhaps, many of us have been disappointed that the end of the world has taken too long to come after we’ve spent most of our lives predicting it. And, perhaps, we’ve decided to take matters in our own hands and "bring it on" because, if it doesn’t come soon, then didn’t we all seem foolish talking about it all. the. time. There are 4 other songs on the EP, none of which are political in nature but are similarly "fired up." The melodic inspirations for the record came from my day in the back stairways and basement of the enormous Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Dinosaur Jr. were there opening for Primus in August 2015.) I was alone and playing my ukulele in the cavernous spaces and tiled showers there. The unique reverberations brought the beginnings of these songs. The hall is reputed to be haunted and I’m not so sure it isn’t. I wasn’t able to fully draw the songs out until I recorded, once again, with Justin Pizzoferrato at Sonelab in Easthampton Massachusetts (May 2016.) I recorded my last full length record (Brace The Wave) there in 2015. I’m happy to consider this EP a follow up to that album, though, this time, every song is played on ukulele (strung with heavy strings and tuned much lower than a standard uke.) Actually, it sounds nothing like a ukulele. For all intents and purposes it is a 4-string acoustic guitar utilizing the strumming styles and lower toned soundscapes I’ve been pursuing since my first released ukulele recording: "Poledo" (on Dinosaur Jr’s 2nd LP You’re Living All Over Me.) Yes, I’ve been doing this for a long time. I’d be proud to have Apocalypse Fetish be my final record. Check it out."

You can stream Apocalypse Fetish in full on  Spotify

Rose McGowan talks with Meredith Graves on this week's The Talkhouse Film Podcast

THIS WEEK ON THE TALKHOUSE FILM PODCAST
ROSE MCGOWAN TALKS WITH MEREDITH GRAVES

On the latest episode of the Talkhouse Film podcast, Perfect Pussy frontwoman talks with actress, director, singer and activist Rose McGowan. Their wide-ranging and compelling conversation touches on McGowan's troubled time in Hollywood; her move into directing; systemic misogyny, gender hypocrisy and violence against women; the no-holds-barred book she's currently writing, and much more - including a surprising and revelatory detour into their respective feelings about death. For more filmmakers talking film and TV, visit Talkhouse Film.
You can listen to the full episode HERE.
Subscribe now on iTunes or Stitcher to stay in the loop on future Talkhouse Podcasts.
QUOTES FROM THE EPISODE:"I'm writing a book right now ... It's called Brave. It's an early overview of my life, and about what Hollywood stole and what I took back and how you too can be brave in your own life." -Rose McGowan
"I'm going to [name names]. I don't care [about the consequences]. These people did these things and they do not deserve protection. They all act like it's this white male mafia that everybody's joined. I didn't join your mafia -- you didn't ask. Do you think I'm going to keep your secrets? Suck it!" -Rose McGowan on Brave.
"It's a dark place. People don't realize it, and I hate to disillusion people of they have any other idea about. ... I know. I am ground zero for this. I was the pixel that was sent out to be masturbated to. I'm very aware of what's up." -Rose McGowan on Hollywood
"I would ultimately like to have my own distribution company for women, and platform for women -- and not just to sit there and bitch about stuff ... and to do it. All those women who are deeply brainwashed in Hollywood -- they too have access to money. They need to wake up. They need to wake up. They are not serving their sisterhood." -Rose McGowan

"I want to [m]ake a movie that puts together Gaslight, Jane Eyre -- the Mrs. Rochester character, who's locked in the attic -- and Mrs. Danvers from Rebecca. I want to put [together] all three women, who are all these tropes, that you're supposed to believe they're mad because they're unattractive or they're not good, and I want to change that and flip that on its ear." -Rose McGowan on what movie she'd like to remake

"ROCK POOL" 12 INCH IS OUT JANUARY 27TH! Bonus! With the new Cate Le Bon not long gone, here's four candles not placed on the original  Crab Day  cake for you to hear as the titular holiday comes round once again.

Cate writes: "Rock Pool" is the killed darlings from the Crab Day sessions brought back to life on a classic 2-2 formation. Written under the same banner of the impossibly absurd and emerging to unimaginable bedlam."

Produced by Noah Georgeson and Josiah Steinbrick, and featuring musicians H. HawklineStephen Black and Stella Mozgawa, "Rock Pool" spins and swirls the waters with carnival pop, synth, drone and dance, all beamed along the pan-electric ray of Cate's immutable blank stare. Short-and-sweet-play fun of a highly ambiguous nature.

Har Mar Superstar Premieres “How Did I Get Through The Day?” Video Via Brooklyn Vegan

Har Mar Superstar Premieres “How Did I Get Through The Day?”Video Via Brooklyn Vegan

'Best Summer Ever' Out Now On Cult Records

On National Headline Tour Now

WATCH & SHARE: Har Mar Superstar - “How Did I Get Through The Day?”

“How Did I Get Through The Day” is one of the more soulful songs on Har Mar Superstar‘s 2016 album Best Summer Ever, a no-irony slice of ’70s slow-burn groove with Har Mar really belting it out."
-Brooklyn Vegan

"The A.V. Club is premiering “How Did I Get Through The Day?,” a ’50s-style heartbreaker that highlights Tillman’s knack for soulful crooning. It’s a track that shows Tillman’s masterful understanding of music history, while establishing his place in it as a chameleonic force."
-- AV Club
"Best Summer Ever, continues this exploration of his identity as a melodic and lyrical craftsmen…."we decided to produce it like it was my greatest hits from 1950 to 1985."  True to his album's vision, Tillmann romps through '50s bubblegum pop, '60s soul, and retro synth-pop, all while managing to put his own lo-fi, vocal-forward spin on each style...the endeavor finds Tillmann's voice sounding deeper, rawer, and more vulnerable than ever."  -- MPR
Today Brooklyn Vegan shared the video for Har Mar Superstar's single "How Did I Get Through The Day". The track along with the previous singles "Youth Without Love" & "It Was Only Dancing (Sex)" are all on Har Mar's most recent LP 'Best Summer Ever' out now via Cult Records.
Sean Tillmann has been making records under the name Har Mar Superstar since 1999.  Under the Har Mar moniker Sean has gone through a plethora of phases ranging from fun-loving beats-based music pioneer (he and Peaches shared stages early on) to angry arena crowd opener (public lewdness police records to prove it) to soul music crooner.  His last album Bye Bye 17 opened a lot of peoples’ minds to his songwriting prowess, which has existed since day one of his career.

For years Tillmann was an artist’s artist when The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Gossip, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many other legends decided to collaborate and/ or take him on tour.  Different phases of his career brought him fame through the fickle worlds of indie, British pop, LA DJ-dom, and New York night crawling.

Bye Bye 17 was an eye opener to the music world, not that Tillmann wasn’t used to accolades through his former work with Sean Na Na, Gayngs, Neon Neon, and Calvin Krime.  Sean had “arrived as a songwriter”.  After living in LA and NYC for 12 years, Sean moved back to Minneapolis, MN where he is most creative.  With the help of Chris Bierden (Polica, Bye Bye 17), Ryan McMahon (Har Mar, Lizzo), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Adele, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Cat Stevens), and Ryan Olson (Polica, Marijuana Deathsquads) Har Mar Superstar’s album “Best Summer Ever” was born.

Best Summer Ever since it’s inception has been imagined as a Greatest Hits of Har Mar Superstar from 1950-1985.  Tillmann was born in 1978.  Wrap your head around that, please.

Best Summer Ever is a slow burner with many ballads, dance-able tracks, and co-writes.  Long-time friend Julian Casablancas (Cult Records founder, The Strokes), Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Erykah Badu, Voidz, Weezer), and Tillmann worked very closely to make the concept happen.  Karen O, Matt Sweeney, and James Levy (Reputante, Lolawolf) all helped write songs on the record.  Bobby Charles wrote “I Hope”.   “Youth Without Love” was a demo written by Julian that was sitting around that Har Mar fell in love with, so they made it for the record.

Look out for Har Mar Superstar, now fronting a six-piece band complete with horns, touring worldwide this year.  The live show has always been a fun, sweat-soaked celebration of joy.  The man was born to rock a stage.  Join the party.

Don’t fake your love.

Lee Fields & The Expressions on 'CBS This Morning Saturday' | Expands tour

LEE FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS MAKES NATIONAL TELEVISION DEBUT ON CBS THIS MORNING SATURDAYANNOUNCES NEW ROUND OF TOUR DATES BEHIND, SPECIAL NIGHT
“It rarely sounds like music that would’ve come out much later than the early ’70s, but Lee Fields isn’t reviving anything, he’s just playing the music he’s played and loved his whole life…. the songs are convincing and passionate enough that they’re as worth hearing as the oldies. They sound instantly familiar in a comforting way, not in a way where they feel redundant.”
Brooklyn Vegan

"While others of his era burned out or faded away, Fields is still here,
his voice now more passionate and ecstatic than ever."
Noisey

New York, NY (November 21, 2016) – Lee Fields & The Expressions rececently released  Special Night  via Big Crown Records and this weekend, the band made its national television debut on  CBS This Morning Saturday , performing "Make The World" and the album's title track.
Watch "Make The World" | "Special Night" | "Work To Do" on CBS This Morning Saturday
Later in the month, Fields and his six-piece band will hit the west coast and return to NYC for a headlining show at Irving Plaza on Saturday, January 7 with Big Crown label-mates Lady Wray and Paul & The Tall Trees. Lee Fields & The Expressions will then hit Europe before returning to the States through the spring. A full list of tour dates can be found on the website with U.S. dates below.

These announcements can't be made without heartbreak as Lee and the band lost a dear friend over the weekend. "We are so saddened to hear of the passing of our great friend Miss Sharon Jones," says the band. "Lee and Sharon have been great friends since their first recording session over 20 years ago. Many of the expressions have had the honor of performing with Sharon and continue to draw inspiration from her music. We are heart broken to hear this news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends. The world lost a bright light but the soul of her music will burn forever."
It’s hard to find another active singer today that has the background Lee Fields does: a first release in 1969, records on thirteen different labels, and close to 47 years of music making, touring, and recording. With such a seasoned past, it’s amazing that the musician and artist, Lee Fields, a North Carolina native, is as busy and focused as ever. Backed by The Expressions and their incomparable soul-sound musicianship, Lee Fields’  Special Night  holds court with any soul music that came before it while evolving and pushing the limits of the genre into the current musical landscape.
