Föllakzoid and J. Spaceman (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized) join forces on 'London Sessions' - out on Sacred Bones 4/20

Föllakzoid and J. Spaceman (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized)Join Forces on London Sessions
Available April 20 via Sacred Bones

Föllakzoid feat. J. Spaceman  London Sessions  Pre-order: Sacred Bones | Bandcamp
1. Electric2. EarthIt should come as no surprise to fans of the Chilean trio Föllakzoid that upon meeting the legendary Jason Pierce a.k.a. J. Spaceman (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized), they discovered they were kindred spirits. Föllakzoid and Spaceman's projects share a restless drive to explore the outer limits of music, as well as an uncanny ability to lock into a groove until it infiltrates the deepest recesses of the listener's psyche. When Föllakzoid met Spaceman backstage at a Wooden Shjips gig at London's Electric Ballroom several years ago, they instantly became friends.
For London Sessions, the Chileans and Spaceman joined forces for new, live-to-tape renditions of "Electric" and "Earth," two highlights from Föllakzoid's III. The recordings were made in a private studio in London while Föllakzoid was on tour in Europe in June 2016, and Spaceman's contributions breathe new life into the songs.
"Jason added a very different harmonic atmosphere to the songs," guitarist Domingo Garcia-Huidobro explained. "It somehow re-articulated the space and metric that already existed in a way the band never could. These new versions have a different edge."

Joan Baez to reissue The Complete Gold Castle Masters as special edition box set

JOAN BAEZ TO REISSUE THE COMPLETE GOLD CASTLE MASTERS AS SPECIAL EDITION BOX SETTO BE INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME APRIL 7FOUR VOICES TOUR WITH MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER AND INDIGO GIRLS, AMY RAY AND EMILY SALIERS OFF TO BRISK START AT BOX OFFICE[image error]Legendary artist and activist, Joan Baez, will reissue three previous recordings—originally released on Gold Castle Records—as a special edition three-CD box set with extensive liner notes and additional material on April 7. The 30 collective tracks contained on  Recently (originally released July 1987),  Diamonds and Rust in the Bullring  (recorded live in Bilbao, Spain, 1988, released April 1989) and  Speaking of Dreams (November 1989) hold their own as some of the greatest song selection sequences of Joan’s entire discography.  All three Gold Castle titles were produced by Alan Abrahams You can pre-order the box set here: http://amzn.to/2lA8YU8Baez began working with Gold Castle Records in 1987 at the invitation of music industry veteran and company founder Danny Goldberg. The three records that resulted represent the virtual halfway point of her professional career. In other news, Baez, will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Electric Light OrchestraJourneyNile RodgersPearl JamTupac Shakur and Yes on Friday, April 7. Of the nomination Baez states, “I never considered myself to be a rock and roll artist. But as part of the folk music boom, which contributed to and influenced the rock revolution of the ‘60s, I am proud that some of the songs I sang made their way into the rock lexicon. I very much appreciate this honor and acknowledgement by the Hall of Fame.” The 32nd Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The induction ceremony will have its television premiere on HBO and a radio broadcast on SiriusXM. Subsequently, in June, longtime friends Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers will share the stage in a highly anticipated special group performance as Four Voices. These exclusive summer tour dates will include stops at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium with a second show added due to popular demand, Chicago’s Chicago Theatre and Toronto’s Massey Hall among many others. Tickets are on-sale now except for their show at Grand Rapids’ Meijer Gardens, which goes on sale in April. See below for a complete tour itinerary.Baez’s career has spanned over 50 years during which she unselfconsciously introduced Bob Dylan to the world in 1963, marched on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement with Martin Luther King, inspired Vaclav Havel to fight for a Czech Republic and continues to this day to stand passionately on behalf of causes she embraces. She is the recipient of many honors including the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award as well as Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award. Her early albums introduced songs that found their way into the rock vernacular including “House Of the Rising Sun” (The Animals), “John Riley” (The Byrds) and “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” (Led Zeppelin).

Emel announces 2017 US tour dates, "a dynamic and politically conscious performer" (BBC)

EMEL ANNOUNCES SPRING 2017 US TOURENSEN OUT NOW ON PARTISAN
"It's facile to compare Mathlouthi to some of the great singer-songwriters she counts as her heroes...[but] she is no wannabe...Mathlouthi is a singular voice."  --NPR MUSIC
Tunisian protest artist, Emel Mathlouthi, creates expansive electronic music paired with traditional Tunisian instruments and rhythms. On the heels of her new release, Ensen, she will tour Europe in April and the US in May. Watch her performing "Lost" at this year's Wasla festival in Dubai to get a sense of her powerful live show:http://www.npr.org/event/music/515659049/first-watch-emel-mathlouthi-lost

In honor of International Women's Day, Emel spoke with the BBC for a piece "celebrating new musicians who are continuing the tradition of outspoken female singers in Arabic music." Emel will also take part in a 'Women of the World' (WOW) concert today honoring Joni Mitchell's album Hejira at London's Southbank Centre.
Emel rose to prominence after a video of her performing her song "Kemti Horra (My Word Is Free)" during a street protest went viral online and became the unofficial anthem of the Arab Spring. Earning her the title "voice of the Tunisian revolution," she was later asked to perform the song at the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony for its significance during the uprising.
Ensen, produced in part by Valgeir Sigurosson (Sigur Ros, Feist, Bjork), is a cinematic, bold and unique combination of electronic beats and Middle Eastern rhythms.  It has made fans at Pitchfork, The Fader, The Guardian, Brooklyn Magazine, Nowness, WNYC and more.  Watch a recent live session with Paste Magazine to get a sense for what is in store.

Lloyd Sachs' "T Bone Burnett: A Life in Pursuit" 3/30 Book Signing at Book Soup w/ Joe Henry

Sachs 6438 F16 Lloyd Sachs discusses and signs "T Bone Burnett: A Life in Pursuit" March 30th at Book Soup in West Hollywood with musical guest Joe Henry"First, and likely definitive portrait of the prolific and enigmatic producer/artist."
- Mojo Magazine"A much-needed critical biography of an influential artist, by a superior critic of the genre."
- Library JournalJoin author of T Bone Burnett: A Life in Pursit, Lloyd Sachs, in discussing his book about the music visionary March 30th at Book Soup in West Hollywood. Sachs will be signing copies and there will be a special performance by singer-songwriter Joe Henry. This first critical appreciation of T Bone Burnett reveals how the proponent of Americana music and producer of the cream of the crop of artists has profoundly influenced American music and culture. Renowned as a studio maven with a Midas touch, Burnett is known for lifting artists to their greatest heights, as he did with Raising Sand, the multiple Grammy Award–winning album by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, as well as acclaimed albums by Los Lobos, the Wallflowers, B. B. King, and Elvis Costello.Burnett virtually invented “Americana” with his hugely successful roots-based soundtrack for the Coen Brothers film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, which went on to sell 8 million albums. Outspoken in his contempt for the entertainment industry, Burnett has nevertheless received many of its highest honors, including Grammy Awards and an Academy Award.Sachs offers a critical acknowledgement of Burnett’s wide-ranging contributions to American music, his passionate advocacy for analog sound, and the striking contradictions that define his maverick artistry. Lloyd Sachs highlights all the important aspects of Burnett’s musical pursuits, from his early days as a member of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue and his collaboration with the playwright Sam Shepard to the music he recently composed for the TV shows Nashville and True Detective and his production of the all-star album Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes. Sachs also underscores Burnett’s brilliance as a singer-songwriter in his own right. Going well beyond the labels "legendary” or “visionary” that usually accompany his name, T Bone Burnett reveals how this consummate music maker has exerted a powerful influence on American music and culture across four decades.Sachs is a nationally known voice on pop music and jazz for myriad publications ranging from Rolling Stone and Washington Post to Down Beat, Village Voice, USA Today and Jazz Times. He was a longtime music columnist and award-winning editorial writer at the Chicago Sun-Times and a senior editor at No Depression, the prized “alt-country” magazine.“T Bone Burnett proves that a producer can make as much of an artistic impact as a performer. Enjoyable, sparkling prose.” —Geoffrey Himes (Washington Post, No Depression and Paste)From the book: “T Bone Burnett now carries such weight in the entertainment capitals of Hollywood and Nashville that the title ‘record producer’ can contain him no more than ‘film director’ could contain Orson Welles. His O Brother soundtrack altered the landscape of Ameri-can music so markedly that it may well have affected our culture as significantly as Citizen Kane did. From his own critically acclaimed work as a singer and songwriter to his close associations with Bob Dylan and Sam Shepard—one of the greatest songwriters of our time and one of the greatest playwrights— to his outspoken efforts to overhaul digital recorded sound, Burnett’s accomplishments have made the musician-producer one of the most significant figures in popular culture during the past forty years.” Book Soup

Chastity Belt's I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone, out 6/2/17

CHASTITY BELT ANNOUNCE NEW RECORD I USED TO SPEND SO MUCH TIME ALONE; WATCH VIDEO FOR "DIFFERENT NOW"

VIDEO: Chastity Belt - "Different Now" (dir. Bobby McHugh)
STREAM: Chastity Belt - "Different Now"

Hardly Art is proud to announce I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone--the highly-anticipated third studio album from Seattle's Chastity Belt--out Friday, June 2nd on all formats and streaming services. Get your first taste of this dazzling, introspective album with the band's new video for "Different Now," which affectionately riffs on Temple of the Dog's classic video for "Hunger Strike." Watch the "Different Now" video here or via the link above.

The band's West Coast tour kicks off tomorrow night in San Francisco, and they will be playing a number of showcases at this year's SXSW. Three bonus tracks will be included on all CD and digital versions, as well as on digital downloads included with LP purchases. Pre-orders are available now from hardlyart.com. Read on for more on Chastity Belt's long-awaited return and a complete list of upcoming tour dates.

ABOUT THE RECORD:
A few years ago, while in a tour van somewhere in Idaho, the members of Chastity Belt—Julia Shapiro, Gretchen Grimm, Lydia Lund, and Annie Truscott—opted to pass the time in a relatively unusual fashion: They collectively paid one another compliments, in great and thoughtful detail. This is what we like best about you, this is why we love you.

I think of that image all the time, the four of them opening themselves up like that, by choice. It’s hard to imagine other bands doing the same. But beyond their troublesome social media presence—see: the abundance of weapons-grade duck face, the rolling suitcase art—and beyond the moonlit deadpan of say, “IDC,” lies, at the very least, an honesty and an intimacy and an emotional brilliance that galvanizes everything they do together. Which is a fancy way of saying: They’re funny, but they’re also capable of being vulnerable. “Giant Vagina” and “Pussy Weed Beer,” two highlights from their aptly titled 2013 debut, No Regerts, were immediately preceded by a sublime yet easily overlooked cut named “Happiness.” I saw a younger, still unsettling version of myself all across 2015’s Time to Go Home

This June marks the release of I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone, their third and finest full-length to date. Recorded live in July of 2016, with producer Matthew Simms (Wire) at Jackpot! in Portland, Oregon (birthplace of some of their favorite Elliott Smith records), it’s a dark and uncommonly beautiful set of moody post-punk that finds the Seattle outfit’s feelings in full view, unobscured by humor. There is no irony in its title: Before she had Chastity Belt, and the close relationships that she does now, Shapiro considered herself a career loner. That’s no small gesture. I can make as much sense of this music as I can my 20s: This is a brave and often exhilarating tangle of mixed feelings and haunting melodies that connects dizzying anguish (“This Time of Night”) to shimmering insight (“Different Now”) to gauzy ambiguity (“Stuck,” written and sung by Grimm). It’s a serious record but not a serious departure, defined best, perhaps, by a line that Shapiro shares early on its staggering title track: “I wanna be sincere.”

When asked, their only request was that what you’re reading right now be brief, honest, free of hyperbole, and “v chill.” When pressed for more, Truscott said, “Just say that we love each other. Because we do.”This is who they are, this is why I love them.—David Bevan, February 2017

European Tour Begins May 26th In Manchester, UKThe Afghan Whigs In Spades, the group’s spellbinding new album, will be available on CD / 180 gram-LP / CS / DL worldwide on May 5th from Sub Pop. The album, led by the single “Demon In Profile,” and standouts “Oriole,” “Copernicus,” “Arabian Heights” and “Toy Automatic,” is the follow-up to the band’s internationally acclaimed Do to the Beast.  In Spades, written and produced by Greg Dulli, was recorded in New Orleans, Los Angeles, Memphis and Joshua Tree.

The album is a searing and soulful rock effort that emphasizes its pop instincts while contrasting with the seductive themes found throughout.  From its evocative cover art to the troubled spirits haunting its halls, In Spades casts a spell that challenges the listener to unpack its dark metaphors and spectral imagery. “It’s a spooky record,” notes Greg Dulli, Afghan Whigs’ songwriter and frontman. “I like that it’s veiled. It’s not a concept album per se, but as I began to assemble it, I saw an arc and followed it. To me it’s about memory – in particular, how quickly life and memory can blur together.”

Earlier today, The Afghan Whigs’ Dulli sat for an interview with BBC 6Music to premiere “Demon In Profile” and discuss In Spades[listen here].

The Afghan Whigs have also delivered a new video for “Demon In Profile,” directed by longtime collaborator Phil Harder [link here].

New Bonnie 'Prince' Billy Album!

BONNY ON MERLEBEST TROUBADOR IS OUT MAY 5TH!With Best Troubador, Bonnie 'Prince Billy pays homage to a long-time and forever hero, the late Merle Haggard. A singer who, some 25 years previously, first performed in public by playing a Merle Haggard song, Bonnyhas often cited Merle's work in performance, on records and in conversation with anyone who was around, even talking to Merle himself for Filter magazine (RIP) in 2009.
Merle's body of work was considered by Bonny for a record such as this for some time, but his passing in April of 2016 almost put a stop to it. The goal was to participate in the handing forward of the songs of a living legend, as Merle had done so many times in his own career.  With Merle gone, some of the impetus of the project was in peril. A plan to make the album in Nashville studios was abandoned. The songs still called to be played again, however - and so sessions were endeavored at home, capturing feeling, memory and new expression in familiar confines with the full-hearted playing and singing of theBonafide United Musicians: Van Campbell, Nuala Kennedy, Danny Kiley, Drew Miller, Cheyenne Mize and Chris Rodahoffer, with special guests Mary Feiock, Emmett Kelly, A.J. Roach and Matt Sweeney.
The songs sung on  Best Troubador  are pulled from all over - from Haggard's 3rd album in 1967 though to his 47th in 2011 - but this is no simple hits compilation. Capable only of occupying a shared space between himself and Merle Haggard, Bonny chose personal favorites to find Merle and himself together in the music. Moving from 1978 to 1969 to 2003 to 1981 and so on allows the album to circle Haggard's music in a simulation of thought and memory, slipping around from spot to spot as if they were discrete impressions, unknown but knowable yet. Dedicated to new life and old,  Best Troubadour is wistful and bittersweet, for the triumph of a life spent in unending pursuit of the goal: new and expressive music, as our inspirations and heroes once sang it. Celebrate as new fans and old on May 5th! WATCH THE
