The Mountain Goats share Goths album opener “Rain in Soho”

Listen to & share "Rain in Soho" on Spotify and Apple Music
Today, the Mountain Goats share “Rain in Soho” from their hotly anticipated new album Goths , which will be in stores on May 19. NPR Music included the track in their All Songs Considered podcast and Lars Gotrich played a clip of a longer interview with John Darnielle about the song. Listen to All Songs Considered and read the full transcript of the interview now at NPR Music.
The lyrics of “Rain in Soho” constitute a jeremiad of vanished things: friends, places, safe harbors. At the head of the procession of the lost stands London’s Batcave, the club that birthed the genre called “goth,” usually over and above the protests of its practitioners; riding atop Dan Perry’s ethereal vocal arrangement—voiced by members of the Nashville Symphony Chorus—and a driving piano, a turbulent lament gathers force:
No morning colder than the first frost
No friends closer than the ones we’ve lost
…though you repent, and don sackcloth, and try to make nice
You can’t cross the same river twice
Goths was recorded at Blackbird Studios, Nashville; produced by Brandon Eggleston; and mixed by Scott Solter. Woodwinds were arranged and played by Matt Douglas. The Mountain Goats are John Darnielle, Peter Hughes, Jon Wurster, and Matt Douglas and are gothic for life.Listen to first single “Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds” and pre-order Gothsnow with special bundle options in the Merge store, or via your favorite digital outlet. SIGUR ROS @ Walt Disney Concert Hall review

REYKJAVÍK FESTIVAL: SIGUR RÓS & LA PHIL, NIGHT 1 @ Walt DisNey Concert HallREVIEW BY ALEXANDER LAURENCE
I hadn’t been to Disney Hall for a few years. The last time I had was when Joanna Newsom played there almost ten years ago. One thing is for sure: Disney Hall is probably the best venue for music in Los Angeles. It’s also a feat of modern architecture, and every seat is very close to the stage. It’s a great setting for some potential spectacular events.
And so I was there at the first night of Reykjavik Festival. Sigur Ros is one of the best international bands, and one of the best known Icelandic acts. I have seen them a few times before but not in such an upscale venue, and not backed by the LA Philharmonic. I felt like some people were dressed formal, but being LA there were also some shorts and baseball caps. I hadn’t seen any orchestral music for quite a number of years, so I was interested in where contemporary classical music was, beyond stuff I was familiar with like John Cage, Pierre Boulez, and Phillip Glass. As I look at the schedule in months to come I see well known names like Schubert and Mahler, and of course, John Adams, who seems to have had resurgence this past year. So everything looked in place for a splendid evening.
The evening began with two minimal pieces by Icelandic composers, Hlynur Adils Vilmarsson and Daniel Bjarnason. Vilmarsson’s “bd” consisted of violin and cello players sliding their bows over the strings. The lack of conventional musical notes was interesting. Bjarnason’s “Emergence” was bizarrely minimal and strange as well, and very unlike what was to come. I should mention that this night was curated by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Daníel Bjarnason.
After a break, Sigur Ros came on stage with the LA Philharmonic. Sigur Ros is now a trio. They performed eight songs together, including orchestrations by Dan Deacon, Owen Pallett, and Anna Meredith, and others. This event combined the rock sound of Sigur Ros with the expansive sound of a forty piece orchestra. The musical peak was somewhere in the middle when they played the most familiar songs like “Fljotavik” and “Staralfur.” By the end of this second set people on the main floor were bobbing their heads back and forth like they were watching a heavy metal gig, and by the last song, most were standing. It was a sight to behold.
There was another needed break. Sigur Ros came back as only a trio. They played a more standard format and played songs from all of their albums during the night. Seven more songs with intense lights and volume, and causing some of the hardcore fans to get back up on their feet. The lead singer Jonsi jumped out towards the audience and knocked over a light stand. It was a three hour classical rock journey, and Sigur Ros delivered the goods this night. Hope to see them again sometime.

Ever wary of the evil eye, the title of Imaad Wasif's Dzi comes from The Tibetan Book of The Dead. Pronounced 'zee,' the word translates to "shine, brightness". Dzi may or may not contain references to love, paranoia and delusion. Characterized by Wasif’s psychonautic sound, it's a marked departure from the acoustic guitar and folk rock style established by The Voidist and veers more into the uncharted territory of indoproto-dream metal. Wasif, an Indian singer, songwriter and guitarist, known for his simplistic compositions and dark emotional ballads contrasts vulnerability with riffs that strive against the notion that rock n roll has completed its historical trajectory. Dzi is a foray into psychedelic rock, and credited as “the last Western rock album to integrate Indian raga sounds.”From the opening chords of the intro Way Inside, with its Morricone/Rosemary’s Babyshadow, it becomes apparent that Wasif is chasing a ghost. “Follow into wind/Follow me the way we took/Follow me higher...” Wasif’s new album is an off the cuff abandonment of processes, both in writing and recording. A choice to forgo modern technology, screens and infinite tweaking in favor of basic recording equipment and live takes. Dzi was recorded on a Tascam Cassette 8 track in a conscious decision to tap back into the primitive thrill, the spontaneous energy, the subconscious stream and entanglement in the mysteries that first drew him in to music. To date, Imaad Wasif has released three solo albums, 2006’s S/T (Kill Rock Stars), 2008’s Strange Hexes (World In Sound), 2011’s The Voidist (Tee Pee) as well as numerous collaborations. His credits include early slo-core noise pop duo lowercase (Amphetamine Reptile), his psych folk band alaska!, albums with Lou Barlow & The Folk Implosion, and Grim Tower, a deathfolk album with Black Mountain’s Stephen McBean. He has also recorded with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lykke Li and co-wrote songs with Karen O on the soundtrack for Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are.His forthcoming album, Dzi, will be released on June 16 via Grey Market. It was produced with Bobb Bruno (Best Coast) and mixed by Mark Rains (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club).TOUR DATES:06/06 Los Angeles, CA - Bootlegw/ Iress, Avi Buffalo

Big Walnuts Yonder - Mike Watt (Minutemen), Nels Cline (Wilco), Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos) - forthcoming debut
Big Walnuts Yonder - S/TMike Watt, Nels Cline, Greg Saunier and Nick Reinhart

Consequence of Sound recently shared album track "Raise The Drawbridges?" HERE. (DirectSoundcloud) See track listing and Raymond Pettibon's cover art below.
Big Walnuts Yonder is bassist/vocalist Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges), guitarist Nels Cline(Wilco, Nels Cline Singers), drummer Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) and guitarist/vocalist Nick Reinhart(Tera Melos). It is not a supergroup. "It's worlds colliding," says Mike Watt.
Four exceptional musicians whose work spans multiple genres and generations, Big Walnuts Yonderis a monumental endeavor that's more than the sum of its parts. The results are a truly epic album defying categorization, where one might hear elements of proto-punk, free jazz, power pop, experimental music, psych-rock and your first teenage acid trip all in one.
The impetus for Big Walnuts Yonder came about way back in 2008 from a conversation between Watt and Reinhart while their bands toured together in Japan. The two discussed recording together and who they might bring in to the sessions. "Nick gets ahold of my first opera," Watt explains. "Made in 1997 with Nels Cline. He said 'what's it like playing with Nels?'"
"So Watt says, 'if you want to know the man, play with the man,'" Cline elaborates. Cline agreed to join if Reinhart picked the drummer. Reinhart quickly mentioned Saunier, unaware that Cline had previously brought Watt to see him perform at a Deerhoof show years before. "Greg immediately came to mind," Reinhart says. "His drumming has highly influenced my guitar playing over the years." The lineup solidified in its mutual appreciation and they began making plans to write and record - while circumnavigating the schedules of 4 extremely busy musicians. "We had planned it for so long," Saunier says. "Then several years passed in which nothing occurred due to everyone's schedules. It was 2-3 years of warm, leisurely prep time, then suddenly made in a panic with time and money on the line."
Prior to recording, Watt sent the band demo recordings of 8 song structures of just him playing bass, unaccompanied. (Cline and Saunier also later brought 1 song each to the session, to which the band contributed their parts, making the album 10 songs total.) Reinhart worked out guitar parts to fit Watt's riffs and the two traded files back and forth. "I'm pretty sure the other guys didn't have parts set before going into the studio," Reinhart says. "Maybe we hadn't discussed what we would do. But it's interesting how a lot of the songs began as Mike Watt basslines, and everyone was able to pull songs and melodies out of them."
The album was recorded in just 3 days in summer 2014 in Brooklyn, NY with producer and former Pere Ubu bassist Tony Maimone engineering at his Studio G. "It was this concentrated sort of freakout," Saunier says. "We basically had to invent a new band on the spot. And, people might have a stereotype of what each person does, but we all showed up to do what we're prevented from doing in other groups." The band would play through each song a couple of times to make up parts, then hit record. "Nels can improvise with anything," Watt notes. "It was trippy to watch the huge pedal dance! Both those guys have like 35 pedals each. And, Greg's not just a drummer man, he's incredible." The album's 10 tracks were recorded primarily live with very few overdubs. Although Big Walnuts Yonderwas created under somewhat spontaneous circumstances, the group endeavored to ensure the album wouldn't sound like a jam session. "It was very clear among us," Saunier notes: "Let's not overindulge and make it a 'musician's recording'."
It wasn't until many months later that vocals were added to the songs, with Reinhart recording vocals to 7 songs and Watt singing on 2 tracks at their home studios. "It was actually a surprise that it ended up having vocals on it," Cline admits. "But it added a layer of accessibility that I didn't expect." Saunier, a revered producer in his own right, volunteered to mix the album - a fact that the other 3 musicians each express as a major boon for the album. Saunier was able to take his time to mix each song very differently from the others. This, too, gives the album the unique feel of all rock history condensed into a single explosive, compelling whole.
As Watt and Reinhart note, the 30-year span between the ages of Big Walnuts Yonder members is also a contributing factor to its magic. And, likely a key to the band's iconoclast sound. "That's insane playing and connecting with someone who's almost 30 years older than me," Reinhart says. "Observing how these dudes are just hammering away so much later is inspiring. They're still learning and exploring." Watt adds, "it's interesting that people are much more open-minded now. We were all just trying to be adventurous with music."
Asked how he might describe Big Walnuts Yonder, Cline succinctly nails it on the head: "It's sick. It has an extreme quality and kicks ass."
Big Walnuts Yonder features a cover illustration by punk art legend Raymond Pettibon. The album will be available on LP, CD and download on May 5th, 2017 via Sargent House. Physical pre-orders are available at bigwalnutsyonder.hellomerch.com and at iTunes HERE.

Thurston Moore Announces More Tour Dates + New Album Out This Friday

NEW ALBUM ROCK N ROLL CONSCIOUSNESS OUT APRIL 28TH

Rock n Roll Consciousness , the new album by Thurston Moore , is set for release onApril 28th on Caroline International. Rock n Roll Consciousness offers a wild leap forward in its expansive, anthemic and exploratory investigations, heralding love between angels, goddess mysticism and belief in healing through rebirth. Inspirited by radical love and the energies of the challenged soul of Mother Earth/Nature in direct resistance, the music is decidedly charged by the force of positive action and a great, true love where the feminine/masculine come together in fluid unions of beauty and light.
"Exalted", with lyrics by poet Radio Radieux, is an unfolding and emotional journey in homage to sacred energy and exaltation - a drug-infused visit from sacred womyn, sibyls, prophetesses, oracles, and goddesses reclaiming consciousness.
"Cusp" is a springtime charging, propulsive singing, moving march of noise and layered harmonics, with a feeling of Sonic Youth mixed with My Bloody Valentine. Radio Radieux'lyrics (with background vocals by Deb Googe) evoke the bliss of total love where all dangers subside and creative power engages trans-mind energy.
"Turn On" is a pop-sonic poem to holy love both intimate and cosmic - a patient, yet driving song, which opens space for lead guitar extensions by James Sedwards.
"Aphrodite", a strange and heavy No wave rocker in salutation to the icon of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation, enumerates tools beyond the consciousness: electric guitars, the power of mind, imagination, will and intention to practice magick. Thurston sings of spells and possession as he and James pick up energies from string sorcery in a true group séance. Steve Shelley transmits the power of the symbolic into actual shimmering cymbal resonance and Deb Googe's bass weaves a mesmeric psychic shaping - all in service to the mystic song.
Rock n Roll Consciousness is a new and exhilarating chapter for Thurston Moore and promises to be a creative highpoint for anyone interested in his legacy of avant-garde music and writing. Serious, precocious yet strangely accessible, Rock n Roll Consciousness is as strong a statement as anything he has recorded these last three decades: from Sonic Youth, the band he founded in 1980, to his solo work ranging from 1995's Psychic Hearts album, to the Beck-produced Demolished Thoughts album of 2011, as well as his myriad collaborations and completely outside-the-margin recordings on a litany of labels (as detailed in author Nick Soulsby's new investigative book We Sing A New Language - The Oral Discography of Thurston Moore ).
The Thurston Moore Group commence touring springtime 2017 featuring the line-up ofJames Sedwards, Deb Googe and Steve Shelley in USA, UK, Europe, Asia and beyond.
