Today on Brooklyn Vegan, Kacey Johansing shares the second track "Bow and Arrow" from her upcoming album The Hiding. With the track, Johansing shares some west coast tour dates, see below. “It seems great opportunities come in blessings as well as tragedies,” Johansing sings on the title track of her third album, The Hiding. After the breakup of her band Yesway, and an abrupt falling out with her closest musical collaborator, Johansing set out to record a new batch of songs that resulted from the sea change in which she had now found herself.
Instead of drawing from her regular band, Johansing pulled from a wider cast of players that she’d come to know in the community of musicians throughout California and the West Coast. The resulting sound is one based wholly and unabashedly in pop. Nods to Christine McVie and Fleetwood Mac can be heard, but Johansing brings these sounds to a modern stage, blending her ethereal vocals with effervescent synthesizer washes and reverberating open-tuned guitar.
Recorded at Panoramic House in Stinson Beach, where Kacey worked as caretaker, as well as at home in Bolinas, on a ridge above the cloud layer in Big Sur, and at a friend’s studio in Portland, the album also serves as a document of Kacey’s time spent traveling in search of the sound she was after. After finishing initial tracking, and still reeling from the heartbreak of losing her musical community, Johansing found a necessary move was in order. Landing somewhat-blindly in Los Angeles, she continued to work on the album and hold it close. The end result isThe Hiding, a tone poem about loss, growth and “leaving the insular beauty of a tight-knit community,” as Johansing describes it. The release of The Hiding comes at a time when Johansing is deeply longing to emerge from her extended absence and reconnect with her desire to create and share her music.“The Hiding” is set for release June 2 on Night Bloom Records, a brand new label Johansing founded with Real Estate’s Alex Bleeker and longtime-friend and songwriter Jeff Manson.TOUR DATES:

The Avalanches will kick off their first North American live tour on June 3 at Brooklyn Bowl. The show is part of the Governors Ball After Dark series. The band will perform at the Governors Ball festival the following day, June 4. The headline run includes shows at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC (June 5), the Theatre of the Living Arts in Philadelphia (June 7) and The Royale in Boston (June 12). Tickets for the Brooklyn show have already sold out. Tickets for the remaining dates will go on sale to the general public on Friday, May 5 at 10am local time. Howling Bells' Juanita Stein announces her debut solo album with first single

Juanita Stein will release her debut solo album, 'America', on Nude Records on 28th July 2017.Stein, who is already known as the singer-songwriter with Howling Bells, recorded the album with producer Gus Seyffert (Beck, Ryan Adams) in Los Angeles. Following recent tours with Michael Kiwanuka and Richard Hawley, Stein will follow a North American tour in May with UK dates over the summer including with Tom Petty in Hyde Park and at Cambridge Folk Festival.
The first single from the album, 'Dark Horse', is out now and comes accompanied by a Texan road movie filmed when Juanita was performing at SxSW festival earlier this year.

I've forever idealised American life - growing up in Australia we were fed the American dream through film and television. The dichotomy between what was real and a dream is forever intriguing to me. The music of Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield, Lee and Nancy and Patsy Cline all informed my musical sensibilities. They opened up this wide screen universe for me.”
An evocative and beautiful record, Stein’s honeyed voice weaves stories of heartbreak and optimism, the songs on the LP tell tales of characters real and imagined, Stein’s own experiences woven amongst them.

Juanita Stein grew up in Sydney with her parents and twin brothers. Her first studio recording was aged five, singing on a song of her father’s, and Peter Stein in fact wrote one of the songs on the album, the country music-drenched Cold Comfort (read Juanita talking about Peter on the brilliant My Old Man blog here).
Stein formed Howling Bells with her brother, Joel, and friends when they moved to London together in 2004. Four acclaimed albums followed, along with headline tours and festival shows around the world, and huge support dates including several US tours with Coldplay and The Killers. A break from Howling Bells around the arrival of her first child saw the first shoots of her solo work start to emerge, and now we find ourselves here. America, an unpredictable place, forever bound up in a uniquely widescreen hope and romance.
America is released on Nude Records on 28th July, and will be available on Digital, CD (NudeCD24) and Vinyl (NudeLP24).

ABOUT THE RECORD:
Dude York's Sincerely opens with a blast—the massive opening chords of "Black Jack," a squealing track that blends the swagger of glam with the heavy riffing and ringing hooks of arena rock. The Seattle-based trio—Peter Richards on guitar and vocals, Claire England on bass and vocals, and Andrew Hall on drums—is announcing itself with an album that couches its themes of anxiety and eroding mental health in rock tracks that amp up the sweetly melodic crunch of powerpop with massive distortion and bashed-to-heck drums. Sincerely is a loud, sweaty rebuke to those moments in life when it seems like nothing's working, a testament to the power of friendship, staring problems directly in the face, and finding solace in art.
Richards, England, and Hall have been through a lot during their four years of playing together, and tracks like the speedy, dark "Paralyzed," the Creedence-echoing "Twin Moons," and the frustrated yet ebullient "Something in The Way" combines lyrics that play on the trio's travails with jumpy, riff-heavy distorto-pop. "I feel like it's about losing perspective—a spiraling-inward perspective despite what may be ready support networks around you," adds Richards. "It's like, 'I don't need anybody's help. I should be able to do this myself, because it's just, like, living."
Bringing England's straightforward drawl into the mix underscores that idea, and its contrast to Richards' excited yelp heightens the tension on Sincerely, a chaotic, yet ultimately triumphant album that's a vital tonic for these increasingly confused times.
"Your back's against the wall," says Richards, "so all you can do is fight."

ABOUT THE RECORD:
Dude York's Sincerely opens with a blast—the massive opening chords of "Black Jack," a squealing track that blends the swagger of glam with the heavy riffing and ringing hooks of arena rock. The Seattle-based trio—Peter Richards on guitar and vocals, Claire England on bass and vocals, and Andrew Hall on drums—is announcing itself with an album that couches its themes of anxiety and eroding mental health in rock tracks that amp up the sweetly melodic crunch of powerpop with massive distortion and bashed-to-heck drums. Sincerely is a loud, sweaty rebuke to those moments in life when it seems like nothing's working, a testament to the power of friendship, staring problems directly in the face, and finding solace in art.

Chicago-based soul singer, poet and activist Jamila Woods will partner with Jagjaguwar and her original label home, Chicago's respected hip-hop incubator Closed Sessions for the proper release of her beloved 2016 album HEAVN. And to celebrate she's released a video for "Holy." "Holy" - as well an unreleased alternative version produced by Dee Lilly - is available today via streaming services for the first time. A declaration of self-love and self-preservation, "Holy" puts on full display what Pitchfork called "a singular mix of clear-eyed optimism and Black girl magic." "I wrote 'Holy' to remind myself that my worth is not dependent on anyone or anything outside of me. For the video I wanted to represent self-care as a sacred act, to make ordinary daily rituals in bedrooms and bathtubs feel magical," says Woods. With additional album standout, "Blk Girl Soldier" - also streaming across all services today - Woods' dynamic and absolutely necessary-for-these-times message and voice can reach even more hearts and minds. The video for "Holy" was directed by Sam Bailey, a close collaborator of Woods. The captivating video dwells in surrealism as much as it does gospel. Additionally Woods has announced select summer dates that include a handful of acoustic shows opening for Corinne Bailey Rae, Panorama and Pitchfork Festivals, as well as over week of heading dates on the east coast, midwest and Canada (full dates below). Enter Venus Flytrap – a new musical comedy web-series following a band of young women intent on grabbing rock and roll by the balls in the land of Trumpistan. Together, it’s something WE can do to fight the powers that be, and laugh our asses off while we squeeze! Follow along as the punk feminist band Venus Flytrap (VFT) and their various cohorts disrupt the entertainment status quo with their own unique brand of comedy, anarchy, music and irreverence.
Venus Flytrap are inspired by the women artists of the late 1970s and 1980s – an international cadre of suffragettes that flocked to NYC and kicked up a fury of delicious noise and artistic mayhem. We’ll watch VFT resurrect the spirit of protest in music while navigating a world of dysfunctional families, sexualities, rival bands, managers and lovers who are all trying to push them into absurd concepts and styles in an attempt to snag the tarnished golden ring of rock glory. Female icons like Margaret Cho, Lydia Lunch and Asia Argento will play characters that aid and abet their crimes against sexist culture. Legendary band-breaker Nic Harcourt rounds out the cast, saying, "I seeVFT as a show that gives a voyeur's look at the biz from a female point of view. Now is clearly the moment as well, as we see women and artists under attack by the Trump administration. I've joined the resistance. Plus Gil Brundy is the ant-Nic Harcourt... I'm looking forward to taking the piss out of myself."

Today, Amber Coffman released the video for her latest single “No Coffee,” watchHERE. The visual, directed by Zia Anger, mirrors the dark yet humorous undertones of the song with Coffman describing the video as “a bit of a commentary on the American Dream, which I think informs a lot of our romantic endeavors, and often times in a not-so-healthy or fulfilling way.”
Former guitarist/singer for ground-breaking indie band the Dirty Projectors, Amber wrote and recorded her solo album in Los Angeles. She’s quietly become one of the most intriguing and sought-after vocalists, delivering notable performances with Bjork and David Byrne on separate Dirty Projectors collaborations (Mount Wittenberg Orcaand “Knotty Pine,” respectively). A host of cutting-edge artists from the EDM, hip-hop, and indie worlds have also enlisted Coffman’s talents for their own projects. Artists she has collaborated with include Major Lazer, Rusko, J.Cole, Snoop Dogg, Velvet Underground impresario John Cale, and Frank Ocean on his recent albumBlonde.
