Hazel English - Just Give In / Never Going Home

Hazel English
Just Give In / Never Going Home
Polyvinyl Records
12 May 2017Following a hugely successful 2016, which saw her play to sold out crowds in the UK, North America and Australia, 26-year-old indie sensation Hazel English is releasing Just Give In / Never Going Home, which compiles her debut EP alongside six new tracks to make her first full LP-length release.
The Never Going Home side combines the hazy, direct songs that have helped Hazel rise to prominence this past year, while the Just Give Inside documents her blossoming creative partnership with Jackson Phillips (aka Day Wave).
Both musicians met when Hazel was working in a local book shop. Jackson popped by on his way to get a synth repaired, and the two got talking about music, before deciding to collaborate. It’s a meeting of minds that’s helped forge this essential debut collection.
Each song sports a timeless, sun kissed aesthetic that you might expect from Bay Area-based creatives, but Hazel’s direct style and pop sensibility take things to another level.
A traveller itching to see new places, Hazel first found Oakland on a trip away from her native Australia. It only took a few days to convince her this could be her new home. Shortly after, while studying creative writing in Melbourne, Australia, she had the option to study abroad.
She didn’t know she’d stay here, or indeed that she’d find the tight-knit musical community that thrives in the Bay Area, but she was drawn to something unexplainable about the place – a connection: “I thought I was just gonna go for six months, but I got connected with the musicians and felt like a really strong part of the community. So it felt like home. That vibe really made me feel like I could be whoever I wanted to be, I could try whatever I wanted to do.”
Given the time and space to make music in her new home, she took a casual approach to working with Phillips, even as debut track “Never Going Home” racked up millions of plays online. “We were just kind of taking our time. Over the span of a year, whenever we could we’d go and work on something.” Picking lyrics from her journal entries and jotting down ideas on a reel-to-reel tape recorder, this simple but personal approach worked wonders.
In other hands, you could imagine these songs being direct, shiny chart smashes. It’s not inconceivable to envisage the world’s biggest stars flocking to Hazel for the perfect hook. Plenty of these arrive on Just Give In / Never Going Home. The glistening “Birthday” captures summertime melancholy with smart precision, new single “Fix” flips excess on its head, while “It’s Not Real” is a brilliantly stark account of how the mind plays tricks on you.
Closing song “That Thing” is an exciting outlier on the release. A perfectly-paced collision of stirring synths and circuiting basslines, it sees her working with Justin Raisen, a deskman described as Ariel Rechtshaid’s protégé, with production credits including Angel Olsen's sensational “My Woman,” as well as Sky Ferreira and Charli XCX. Although this shift in direction could remain a complete one-off in Hazel’s back catalogue (“I just want it to feel like a standalone song, not paving the way for what’s gonna happen next”), it’s further proof that she can work magic in different territories.
There’s no guessing which direction future material will strive towards, but virtually nothing seems off limits. In turn, this double EP doesn’t just serve to document Hazel’s more-than-promising first steps – it suggests that whatever’s next round the corner will be the making of a star.

POND official website
POND will release their brand new album The Weather tomorrow on May 5th via Marathon Artists. The record--produced by Tame Impala's Kevin Parker--captures POND at their finest, as fresh psych-rock soundscapes envelope tales that manage to be sober, surreal, intimate, and out of this world all at the same time. At once both obsessed with today's tumultuous global attitudes ("30000 Megatons") and as detached from them as humanly possible ("Paint Me Silver"), The Weather provides ideal terrain for both engagement and escapism. You'll be able to stream and purchase The Weather here. Additionally, if you're in NYC, be on the lookout for their upcoming show at the Bowery Ballroom on May 10th to catch this new collection of songs in person.
Watch "Sweep Me Off My Feet"
The Weather will arrive as POND finishes up the North American leg of their world tour, which featured their debut appearance at Coachella. The guys will then embark on a run of European dates, including their largest UK headline show to date at The O2 Forum in London. POND will return to the UK later this summer to play Reading and Leeds Festivals and End of the Road Festival. See below for all remaining tour dates.

Japanese Breakfast shares "Machinist" video, announces 'Soft Sounds From Another Planet' out 7/14 on Dead Oceans

JAPANESE BREAKFAST SHARES "MACHINIST" VIDEO
ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUMSOFT SOUNDS FROM ANOTHER PLANETOUT JULY 14TH ON DEAD OCEANS

Today, Japanese Breakfast has shared a music video for "Machinist," the lead single from her new album, Soft Sounds From Another Planet, available for pre-order now and due out July 14th on Dead Oceans.
The follow up to Japanese Breakfast's critically acclaimed debut is a work of self-reflection that looks out at the cosmos in search of healing, finding inspiration in science fiction, outer space, and the Mars One Project. This influence is most apparent in the video for "Machinist," Michelle Zauner's fourth music video collaboration with House of Nod's Adam Kolodny.
Video director, Zauner says "the song is a sci-fi narrative about a woman who falls in love with a robot. In the video she hallucinates on rocket fuel and tears apart her spaceship in an attempt to build a body for her robot lover," while director of photography, Adam Kolodny, says they "were inspired by 2001A Space OdysseyAlien2046, and The Fifth Element."
Japanese Breakfast is currently on tour with Slowdive and has upcoming dates with Tegan and Sara, (Sandy) Alex G and Cende. All dates below.

ABOUT JAPANESE BREAKFAST: "The title Soft Sounds From Another Planet alludes to the promise of something that may or may not be there. Like a hope in something more. The songs are about human resilience and the strength it takes to claw out of the darkest of spaces." Michelle Zauner wrote the debut Japanese Breakfast album in the weeks after her mother died of cancer, thinking she would quit music entirely once it was done. That wasn't the case. WhenPsychopomp was released to acclaim in 2016, she was forced to confront her grief. Zauner would find find herself reliving traumatic memories multiple times a day during interviews, trying to remain composed while discussing the most painful experience of her life. Her sophomore album, Soft Sounds From Another Planet, is a transmutation of mourning, a reflection that turns back on the cosmos in search of healing. "I want to be a woman of regimen," Zauner sings over a burbling synth on the album's opening track "Diving Woman." This serves as Zauner's mission statement: stick to the routine lest you get derailed, don't cling to the past, don't descend. In fact, ascend to the stars; Zauner found artistic solace removed from Earth, in outer space and science fiction. "I used the theme as a means to disassociate from trauma," she explains. "Space used as a place of fantasy." And yet, Soft Sounds From Another Planet isn't a concept album. Over the course of 12 tracks, Zauner explores an expansive thematic universe, a cohesive outpouring of unlike parts structured to create a galaxy of her own design. In the instrumental "Planetary Ambience," synths communicate the way extraterrestrials might, and on the shapeshifting single "Machinist,"  which Zauner has been performing live for over a year now, she details the sci-fi narrative of a woman falling in love with a machine. "It's pure fiction," she explains, "But it can map onto real relationships in a relevant way." The track, which begins with spoken-word ambience, moves into autotune '80s pop bliss and ends with a sultry saxophone solo, perfectly marries the experience: there's a perceptible humanity in mechanical, bodily events. Within its astral production, much of Soft Sounds From Another Planet stays grounded. "Road Head" is the last chest compression in attempt to resuscitate a doomed relationship, while the penultimate track "This House" is an acoustic dirge that honors Zauner's chosen family. The baroque pop "Boyish" has a haunting, crystalline clarity that recalls the pathos of a Roy Orbison ballad, while "Body is a Blade" embraces the dark intimacy of Zauner's Pacific Northwest heroes Elliott Smith and Mount Eerie. With help from co-producer Craig Hendrix (who also co-produced Little Big League's debut) and Jorge Elbrecht, (Ariel Pink, Tamaryn) who mixed the album, Zauner recontextualizes her bedroom pop beginnings, expanding and maturing her sound. The sheer massiveness of the big room production onSoft Sounds From Another Planet introduces listeners to a new Japanese Breakfast. Zauner's familiar, capacious voice will serve as their guide. "Your body is a blade that moves while your brain is writhing," she sings. "Knuckled under pain you mourn but your blood is flowing." There's discernible pain in the phrasing, Zauner recognizing limitation, a lack of control, but then subverting the feeling, creating her own musical language for confronting trauma. Where Psychopomp introduced the world to Japanese Breakfast, Soft Soundsdives deeper. It builds space where there is none, and suggests that in the face of tragedy, we find ways to keep on living.

Paul Bergmann Reveals Two New Singles from Nothing At All; Los Angeles Record Release Show May 6 at The Echo

Paul Bergmann Reveals Two New Singles from Nothing At All

New Album Nothing At All Out May 5
Los Angeles Record Release Show May 6 at The Echo photo credit: Alex Legolvan"It’s obvious that Bergmann is a voice worth your attention, both lyrically and sonically." - Paste"A lovely little ode to loneliness"  - Noisey"His appreciation for both old and new gives his music a singular sound, while still maintaining  the feel of a classic record you found in your attic and just dusted off." - Culture Collide"With just enough distortion on his vocals, a driving jangly rhythm guitar, and softlyswelling strings, "Old Dream" is a quick jaunt into the whimsical recording techniques of the past, while still creating an endearing track that feels fresh." - Flood Magazine"Paul Bergmann is the kind of guy who could sing the phone book and make it sound like an existential statement. His Americana noir goes beyond sad-sack, whiskey-soaked rumination, the hum of his almost pugilistic lyrics wry and sobering and more than a little bit challenging." - Buzzbands LAStream: "Coffee, Wine, Water, Tea" at The Big Takeover or SoundcloudStream:  "Bored by the Changes and Living" at Buzzbands LA or SoundcloudWatch: "Nothing At All" video at Paste Magazine or YoutubeStream: "Nothing At All" at SoundcloudPaul Bergmann has revealed two new songs from his forthcoming album Nothing At All due May 5. The Big Takeover premiered "Coffee, Wine, Water, Tea." About the song, Paul Bergmann says, "This is probably the most sincere song I've ever written.  It's also the heaviest collaboration between myself and Brendan Eder (the producer).  Brendan built the soundscape of the song and composed the entire outro, which showcases both how much of a nutcase he is and also his enormous talent.  To me, this song is the cornerstone of the record, and I have a special fondness towards it."  Buzzbands LA  premiered "Bored by the Changes and Living" from the upcoming release. The track was produced by Gus Seyffert and is available to share via Soundcloud.  Nothing At All is available to pre-order now at  Bandcamp.  Paul Bergmann has announced a Los Angeles record release show coming up on May 6 at The Echo. Tickets for the show are avaiable  HERE. Last month Paul Bergmann shared the official video for "Nothing At All" with Paste Magazine.  About the video Paul Bergmann says, "This video was a collaboration between myself and childhood friend Rufus Paisley.  I shot and edited the first cut in Maine, and Rufus added animation and produced the final cut in L.A.  We've worked on projects together before, and I think we share a similar aesthetic attraction to a particular blend of earnestness and schmaltz.  I was really drawn to working with him when I saw the first PWR BTTM video he did, '1994.'  As for the song, it's filled with gorgeous strings arranged by the album's producer and my good friend, Brendan Eder."There is no word in the English dictionary that properly captures the easily recognizable, yet difficult to describe sensation of being both happy and sad at the same time. Paul Bergmann creates this nameless feeling, among others equally recognizable and complex, like frustration, adoration, and yearning.Paul’s music is refreshingly tangible in our digital age. His voice and melodies are reminiscent of late nights on back porches filled with wine-mouth sing-alongs and buzzing crickets.  In a word, Paul can at times be nostalgic; yet he avoids the pitfalls of many by being unapologetically himself.  Both a crooner and a wordsmith, Bergmann has evolved from his previous EPs and debut LP into a more refined, upbeat version of himself, with forays into electronic beats and off-kilter orchestral arrangements on his newest record “Nothing At All."The album is a waltz from Los Angeles, where it was conceived and recorded, to Maine, where he currently resides, across Middle America and the plains and cities in between.  “Nothing At All” was produced by composer Brendan Eder.  With a background in film scoring and currently helming an experimental chamber ensemble of his own, Eder’s influence is plain to see.  The collaboration birthed the final sound of the record, which is riddled with Eder’s inventive, eclectic compositions. The album features wide-ranging instrumentation, from the airy string section floating through the somber title track, to the sparkling sounds of the vibraphone on “The Heart is a Rock by the Sea”, to the felicitous full-orchestral accompaniment on “Where Were You?.”  Paul’s lyrics and tone are as honest as ever, at times a bit tongue-in-cheek, and always very now.  The record, which features a track produced by L.A. tastemaker Gus Seyffert (of Beck and The Black Keys), encompasses a variety of emotions yet still feels cohesive. In short, “Nothing at All” is the result of years of singing, touring, playing shows, and recording. While a bit nihilistic, the brutally honest (and also funny) title is one that we all can commiserate with.

Grandaddy postpones tour after death of founding member Kevin Garcia

Unfortunately Grandaddy canceled their tour due to the passing of their band mate Kevin. Statement below with more info.
There are no accurate words to express what we need to.We are absolutely shattered to say that we lost our friend and band mate Kevin Garcia early this afternoon. He succumbed to the effects of a massive stroke. We were all able to say goodbye to him and he was surrounded by his closest friends and family here in Modesto.Kevin started playing with Grandaddy when he was fifteen. He was an actual angel. He navigated life with a grace, a generosity and a kindness that was utterly unique. And contagious. He is loved so deeply by so many.Kevin was a proud father of two children, Jayden and Gavin. He is survived by his grandmother Joan, his parents Randy and Barbara (who let us practice at their house until 2001...and who are the best), his brothers Craig and Jeff and his wife Sondra.
There is a gofundme here to help with his family's coming expenses:  https://www.gofundme.com/friends-of-kevin-garcia
Given the circumstances, we unfortunately have to cancel our upcoming US tour dates.   We hope to reschedule these at some point in the future.  The dates are below.
